We report the realization of a synthetic magnetic field for photons and polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of coupled semiconductor micropillars. A strong synthetic field is induced in both the s and p orbital bands by engineering a uniaxial hopping gradient in the lattice, giving rise to the formation of Landau levels at the Dirac points. We provide direct evidence of the sublattice symmetry breaking of the lowest-order Landau level wavefunction, a distinctive feature of synthetic magnetic fields. Our realization implements helical edge states in the gap between n=0 and n=1 Landau levels, experimentally demonstrating a novel way of engineering propagating edge states in photonic lattices. In light of recent advances in the enhancement of polariton-polariton nonlinearities, the Landau levels reported here are promising for the study of the interplay between pseudomagnetism and interactions in a photonic system.
We describe the formation of highly degenerate, Landau-level-like amplified states in a strained photonic honeycomb lattice in which amplification breaks the sublattice symmetry. As a consequence of the parity anomaly, the zeroth Landau level is localized on a single sublattice and possesses an enhanced or reduced amplification rate. The spectral properties of the higher Landau levels are constrained by a generalized time-reversal symmetry. In the setting of two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers, the anomaly directly affects the mode selection and lasing threshold while in three-dimensional …
We study the driven-dissipative steady-state of a coherently-driven Bose field in a honeycomb lattice geometry. In the presence of a suitable spatial modulation of the hopping amplitudes, a valley-dependent artificial magnetic field appears and the low-energy eigenmodes have the form of relativistic Landau levels. We show how the main properties of the Landau levels can be extracted by observing the peaks in the absorption spectrum of the system and the corresponding spatial intensity distribution. Finally, quantitative predictions for realistic lattices based on photonic or microwave technolo…
We investigate the helically-propagating edge states associated with pseudo-Landau levels in strained honeycomb lattices. We exploit chiral symmetry to derive a general criterion for the existence of these propagating edge states in the presence of only nearest-neighbour hoppings and we verify our criterion using numerical simulations of both uni-axially and trigonally strained honeycomb lattices. We show that the propagation of the helical edge state can be controlled by engineering the shape of the edges. Sensitivity to chiral-symmetry-breaking next-nearest-neighbour hoppings is assessed. Ou…
In addition to the known pseudomagnetic field, nonuniform strains independently induce a position-dependent Fermi velocity (PDFV) in graphene. Here we demonstrate that, due to the presence of a PDFV, the Dirac fermions on a nonuniform (strained) honeycomb lattice may experiment a sort of magnetic effect, which is linearly proportional to the momentum of the quasiparticle. As a consequence, the quasiparticles have a sublinear dispersion relation. Moreover, we analyze the general consequence of a PDFV on the Klein tunneling of electrons through pseudomagnetic barriers. In particular, we report a…
We report low-temperature transport measurements in strained InAs/Ga0.68In0.32Sb quantum wells, which supports time-reversal symmetry-protected helical edge states. The temperature and bias voltage dependence of the helical edge conductance for devices of various sizes are consistent with the theoretical expectation of a weakly interacting helical edge state. Moreover, we found that the magnetoresistance of the helical edge states is related to the edge interaction effect and the disorder strength.
Dirac fermions in graphene may experiment dispersive pseudo-Landau levels due to a homogeneous pseudomagnetic field and a position-dependent Fermi velocity induced by strain. In this paper, we study the (semi-classical) dynamics of these particles under such a physical context from an approach of coherent states. For this purpose we use a Landau-like gauge to built Perelomov coherent states by the action of a non-unitary displacement operator $D(α)$ on the fundamental state of the system. We analyze the time evolution of the probability density and the generalized uncertainty principle as well…
We illustrate possible topological phases in honeycomb lattice with textures in electron hopping energy between nearest-neighboring sites and show that they are characterized by the mirror winding number intimately related to the chiral (or sublattice) symmetry. Analytic wave functions of zero-energy edge modes in ribbon geometry are provided, which are classified into even and odd sectors with respect to the mirror operation with the mirror plane perpendicular to the edge, and evolve into the topological helical edge states at finite momenta. Intriguingly our results demonstrate that in order…
Modification of interatomic distances due to high pressure leads to exotic phenomena, including metallicity, superconductivity and magnetism, observed in materials not showing such properties in normal conditions. In two-dimensional crystals, such as graphene, atomic bond lengths can be modified by more that 10 percent by applying in-plane strain, i.e., without generating high pressure in the bulk. In this work, we study the strain-induced Mott transition on a honeycomb lattice by using computationally inexpensive techniques, including Gutzwiller Wave Function (GWF) and different variants of G…
We derive the low-energy Hamiltonian for a honeycomb lattice with anisotropy in the hopping parameters. Taking the reported Dirac Hamiltonian for the anisotropic honeycomb lattice, we obtain its optical conductivity tensor and its transmittance for normal incidence of linearly polarized light. Also, we characterize its dichroic character due to the anisotropic optical absorption. As an application of our general findings, which reproduce the case of uniformly strained graphene, we study the optical properties of graphene under a nonmechanical distortion.
Using an array of coupled microwave resonators arranged in a deformed honeycomb lattice, we experimentally observe the formation of pseudo-Landau levels in the whole crossover from vanishing to large pseudomagnetic field strength. This is achieved by utilizing an adaptable set-up in a geometry that is compatible with the pseudo-Landau levels at all field strengths. The adopted approach enables to observe fully formed flat-band pseudo-Landau levels spectrally as sharp peaks in the photonic density of states, and image the associated wavefunctions spatially, where we provide clear evidence for a…
Moving, merging and annihilating Dirac points are studied theoretically in the tight-binding model on honeycomb lattice with up-to third-nearest-neighbor hoppings. We obtain a rich phase diagram of the topological phase transitions in the parameter space of direction-dependent hoppings. We obtain the conditions for the three Dirac points to merge and for the tricritical points. We find that only very small third-nearest-neighbor hoppings are enough for the existence of the merging of three-Dirac-points and the tricritical points, if the system is sufficiently anisotropic. The density of states…
A novel magnetic ground state is reported for the Hubbard Hamiltonian in strained graphene. When the chemical potential lies close to the Dirac point, the ground state exhibits locally both the Néel and ferromagnetic orders, even for weak Hubbard interaction. Whereas the Néel order parameter remains of the same sign in the entire system, the magnetization at the boundary takes the opposite sign from the bulk. The total magnetization this way vanishes, and the magnetic ground state is globally only an antiferromagnet. This peculiar ordering stems from the nature of the strain-induced single par…
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a topological transition of classical light in "photonic graphene": an array of waveguides arranged in the honeycomb geometry. As the system is uniaxially strained (compressed), the two unique Dirac points (present in the spectrum of conventional graphene) merge and annihilate each other, and a band gap forms. As a result, edge states are created on the zig-zag edge and destroyed on the bearded edge. These results are applicable for any 2D honeycomb-type structure, from carbon-based graphene to photonic lattices and crystals.
Two dimensional lattices are an important stage for studying many aspects of quantum physics, in particular the topological phases. The valley Hall and anomalous Hall effects are two representative topological phenomena. Here we show that they can be unified in a strained honeycomb lattice, where the hopping strengths between neighboring sites are designed by mimicking those between the Fock states in a three-mode Jaynes-Cummings model. Such a strain induces an effective magnetic field which results in quantized Landau levels. The eigenstates in the zeroth Landau level can be represented by th…
We explore Andreev states at the interface of graphene and a superconductor for a uniform pseudo-magnetic field. Near the zeroth-pseudo Landau level, we find a topological transition as a function of applied Zeeman field, at which a gapless helical mode appears. This 1D mode is protected from backscattering as long as intervalley- and spin-flip scattering are suppressed. We discuss a possible experimental platform to detect this gapless mode based on strained suspended membranes on a superconductor, in which dynamical strain causes charge pumping
We propose a minimal effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian for HgTe/CdHgTe quantum wells (QWs) describing the side maxima of the first valence subband. By using the Hamiltonian, we explore the picture of helical edge states in tensile and compressively strained HgTe QWs. We show that both dispersion and probability density of the edge states can differ significantly from those predicted by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model. Our results pave the way towards further theoretical investigations of HgTe-based quantum spin Hall insulators with direct and indirect band gaps beyond the BHZ model.
Topological electric quadrupole is a recently proposed concept that extends the theory of electric polarization of crystals to higher orders. Such a quadrupole phase supports topological states localized on both edges and corners. In this work, we show that in a quadrupole phase of honeycomb lattice, topological helical edge states and pseudo-spin-polarized corner states appear by making use of a pseudo-spin degree of freedom related to point group symmetry. Furthermore, we argue that a general condition for emergence of helical edge states in a (pseudo-)spinful quadrupole phase is mirror or t…
We report on a detailed study of the terahertz (THz) photoresistivity in a strained HgTe three-dimensional topological insulator (3D TI) for all Fermi level positions: inside the conduction and valence bands, and in the bulk gap. In the presence of a magnetic field we detect a resonance corresponding to the cyclotron resonance (CR) in the top surface Dirac fermions (DF) and examine the nontrivial dependence of the surface state cyclotron mass on the Fermi level position. We also detect additional resonant features at moderate electron densities and demonstrate that they are caused by the mixin…
The electronic properties of a graphene monolayer in a magnetic and a strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field are studied in the presence of spin-orbit interactions (SOI) that are artificially enhanced, e.g., by suitable adatom deposition. For the homogeneous case, we provide analytical results for the Landau level eigenstates for arbitrary intrinsic and Rashba SOI, including also the Zeeman field. The edge states in a semi-infinite geometry are studied in the absence of the Rashba term. For a critical value of the magnetic field, we find a quantum phase transition separating two phases with spin…
Shubnikov de Haas resistance oscillations of highly mobile two dimensional helical electrons propagating on a conducting surface of strained HgTe 3D topological insulator are studied in magnetic fields B tilted by angle $θ$ from the normal to the conducting layer. Strong decrease of oscillation amplitude A is observed with the tilt: $A \sim \exp(-ξ/cos(θ))$, where $ξ$ is a constant. Evolution of the oscillations with temperature T shows that the parameter $ξ$ contains two terms: $ξ=ξ_1+ξ_2 T$. The temperature independent term, $ξ_1$, describes reduction of electron mean free path in magnetic f…
Silicene is a monolayer of silicon atoms forming a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, which shares almost every remarkable property with graphene. The low energy structure of silicene is described by Dirac electrons with relatively large spin-orbit interactions due to its buckled structure. The key observation is that the band structure is controllable by applying the electric field to a silicene sheet. In particular, the gap closes at a certain critical electric field. Examining the band structure of a silicene nanoribbon, we demonstrate that a topological phase transition occurs from a topol…
We present a non-Hermitian Floquet model with topological edge states in real and imaginary band gaps. The model utilizes two stacked honeycomb lattices which can be related via four different types of non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry. Implementing the correct time-reversal symmetry provides us with either two counterpropagating edge states in a real gap, or a single edge state in an imaginary gap. The counterpropagating edge states allow for either helical or chiral transport along the lattice perimeter. In stark contrast, we find that the edge state in the imaginary gap does not propagat…
We study non-centrosymmetric topological superconductivity in correlated doped quantum spin-Hall insulators (QSHI) on honeycomb lattice without inversion symmetry where the intrinsic (Kane-Mele) and Rashba spin-orbit couplings can in general exist. We explore the generic topologically non-trivial superconducting phase diagram of the model system. Over a certain parameter space, the parity-mixing superconducting state with co-existing spin-singlet $d$+$id$ and spin-triplet $p$+$ip$-wave pairing is found. On a zigzag nanoribbon, the parity-mixing superconducting state shows co-existing helical a…
We study the spin texture of a generic helical liquid, the edge modes of a two-dimensional topological insulator with broken axial spin-symmetry. By considering honeycomb and square lattice realizations of topological insulators, we show that in all cases the generic behavior of a momentum-dependent rotation of the spin quantization axis is realized. Here we establish this mechanism also for disk geometries with continuous rotational symmetry. Finally, we demonstrate that the rotation of spin-quantization axis remains intact for arbitrary geometries, i.e. in the absence of any continuous symme…
Zero energy states in the Dirac spectrum with U(1) symmetric massive vortices of various underlying insulating orders in strained graphene are constructed in the presence of the magnetic field. An easy plane vortex of antiferromagnet and quantum spin Hall orders host two zero energy states, however, with two different length scales. Such inequivalent zero modes can lead to oscillatory charge and magnetization, and their usual quantizations get restored only far from the vortex core. Otherwise, these zero modes can be delocalized from each other by tuning the mutual strength of two fields. One …
Combining an analytical and numerical approach we investigate the dispersion of the topologically protected spin-filtered edge-states of the Quantum Spin Hall state on honeycomb and ruby nets with zigzag (ZZ) and armchair (AC) edges. We show that the Fermi velocity of the helical edge-states on ZZ edges increases linearly with the strength of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) whereas for AC edges the Fermi velocity is independent of the SOC. Also the decay length of edge states into the bulk is dramatically different for AC and ZZ edges, displaying an inverse functional dependence on the SOC.
The degeneracy and spatial support of pseudo-Landau levels (pLLs) in strained honeycomb lattices systematically depends on the geometry -- for instance, in hexagonal and rectangular flakes the 0th pLL displays a twofold increased degeneracy, while the characteristic sublattice polarization of the 0th pLL is only fully realized in a zigzag-terminated triangle. These features are dictated by algebraic constraints in the atomistic theory, and signify a departure from the standard picture in which all qualitative differences between pLLs and Landau levels induced by a magnetic field trace back to …
In conventional theories, topological band properties are intrinsic characteristics of the bulk material and do not depend on the choice of the reference frame. In this scenario, the principle of bulk-edge correspondence can be used to predict the existence of edge states between topologically distinct materials. In this study, we propose and carefully examine a 2D elastic phononic plate with a Kekulé-distorted honeycomb pattern engraved on it. It is found that the pseudospin and the pseudospin-dependent Chern numbers are not invariant properties, and the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ number is no longer a s…
We study the temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility of a strained graphene quantum dot by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Within the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, our unbiased numerical results show that a relative small interaction $U$ may lead to a edge ferromagnetic like behavior in the strained graphene quantum dot, and a possible room temperature transition is suggested. Around half filling, the ferromagnetic fluctuations at the zigzag edge is strengthened both markedly by the on-site Coulomb interaction and the strain, especially in low temperature region…
Due to nonzero intrinsic spin-orbit interaction in buckled honeycomb crystal structures, silicene and germanene exhibit interesting topological properties, and are therefore candidates for the realization of the quantum spin Hall effect. We employ the Kane-Mele model to investigate the electron states in hexagonal silicene and germanene nanorings having either zigzag or armchair edges in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We present results for the energy spectra as function of magnetic field, the electron density of the spin-up and spin-down states in the ring plane, and the calc…
We consider the combined effects of large spin-orbit couplings and a perpendicular magnetic field in a 2D honeycomb fermionic lattice. This system provides an elegant setup to generate versatile spin textures propagating along the edge of a sample. The spin-orbit coupling is shown to induce topological phase transitions between a helical quantum spin Hall phase and a chiral spin-imbalanced quantum Hall state. Besides, we find that the spin orientation of a single topological edge state can be tuned by a Rashba spin-orbit coupling, opening an interesting route towards quantum spin manipulation.…

We describe the conductance of a normal-superconducting junction in systems with Landau levels that preserve time reversal symmetry. Those Landau levels have been observed in strained honeycomb lattices. The current is carried along the edges in both the normal and superconducting regions. When the Landau levels in the normal region are half-filled, Andreev reflection is maximal and the conductance plateaus have a peak as a function of filling factor. The height of those peaks is quantized at $4e^{2}/h$. The interface of the junction has Andreev edge states, which form a coherent superposition…
The propagation of localized edge modes in photonic honeycomb lattices, formed from an array of adiabatically varying periodic helical waveguides, is considered. Asymptotic analysis leads to an explicit description of the underlying dynamics. Depending on parameters, edge states can exist over an entire period or only part of a period; in the latter case an edge mode can effectively disintegrate and scatter into the bulk. In the presence of nonlinearity, a `time'-dependent one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation describes the envelope dynamics of edge modes. When the average of th…
Explicit derivation of the chiral and (generic) helical edge states for the Kane-Mele model: Closed expressions for the wave function, dispersion relation, and spin rotation
We consider exciton-polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of micropillars subjected to circularly polarized (${σ_\pm}$) incoherent pumps, which are arranged to form two domains in the lattice. We predict that the nonlinear interaction between the polaritons and the reservoir excitons gives rise to the topological valley Hall effect where in each valley two counterpropagating helical edge modes appear. Under a resonant pump, ${σ_\pm}$ polaritons propagate in different directions without being reflected around bends. The polaritons propagating along the interface have extremely high effective lifeti…
We describe a method for measuring the Berry curvature from the wave-packet dynamics in perturbed arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides with honeycomb lattice structure. To disentangle the effects of the Berry curvature and the energy dispersion we utilize a difference measurement by propagating the wave packet under the influence of a constant external force back and forth. In this way a non-vanishing Berry curvature is obtained for photonic graphene with small sublattice bias or strain, where the relative error between the exact Berry curvature and the one derived from the semicl…
Certain non-uniform strain applied to graphene flakes has been shown to induce pseudo-Landau levels in the single-particle spectrum, which can be rationalized in terms of a pseudo-magnetic field for electrons near the Dirac points. However, this Landau level structure is in general approximate and restricted to low energies. Here we introduce a family of strained bipartite tight-binding models in arbitrary spatial dimension d and analytically prove that their entire spectrum consists of perfectly degenerate pseudo-Landau levels. This construction generalizes the case of triaxial strain on grap…
We show that the magnetic field produced by a chiral ferromagnetic film can be applied to control ultracold atoms. The film will act as a magnetic mirror or a reflection grating for ultracold atoms when it is in the helical phase or the skyrmion crystal phase respectively. By applying a bias magnetic field and a time-dependent magnetic field, one-dimensional or two-dimensional magnetic lattices including honeycomb, Kagome, triangular types can be created to trap the ultracold atoms. We have also discussed the trapping height, potential barrier, trapping frequency, and Majorana loss rate for ea…
Recent search for optical analogues of topological phenomena mainly focuses on mimicking the key feature of quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall effects (QHE and QSHE): edge currents protected from disorder. QHE relies on time-reversal symmetry breaking, which can be realised in photonic gyromagnetic crystals. In the optical range, the weak magneto-optical activity may be replaced with helical design of coupled waveguides, converting light propagation into a time-dependent perturbation. Finally, optical QHE due to artificial gauge fields was predicted in microcavity lattices. Here, we consider h…
Applying time-periodic modulations is routinely used to control and design synthetic matter in quantum-engineered settings. In lattice systems, this approach is explored to engineer band structures with non-trivial topological properties, but also to generate exotic interaction processes. A prime example is density-assisted tunneling, by which the hopping amplitude of a particle between neighboring sites explicitly depends on their respective occupations. Here, we show how density-assisted tunneling can be tailored in view of simulating the effects of strain in synthetic graphene-type systems.…
We study the electronic properties of the confined honeycomb lattice in the presence of the intrinsic spin-orbit (ISO) interaction and perpendicular magnetic field, and report on uncommon aspects of the quantum spin Hall conductance corroborated by peculiar properties of the edge states. The ISO interaction induces two specific gaps in the Hofstadter spectrum, namely the 'weak' topological gap defined by Beugeling et al [Phys. Rev. B 86, 075118 (2012)], and spin-imbalanced gaps in the relativistic range of the energy spectrum. We analyze the evolution of the helical states with the magnetic fi…
Topological edge states form at the edges of periodic materials with specific degeneracies in their modal spectra, such as Dirac points, under the action of effects breaking certain symmetries of the system. In particular, in Floquet topological insulators unidirectional edge states appear upon breakup of the effective time-reversal symmetry due to dynamical modulations of the underlying lattice potential. However, such states are usually reported for certain simple lattice terminations, for example, at zigzag or bearded edges in honeycomb lattices. Here we show that unconventional topological…
We investigate the magnetic response in the quantized spin Hall (SH) phase of layered-honeycomb lattice system with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling lambda_SO and on-site Hubbard U. The response is characterized by a parameter g= 4 U a^2 d / 3, where a and d are the lattice constant and interlayer distance, respectively. When g< (sigma_{xy}^{s2} mu)^{-1}, where sigma_{xy}^{s} is the quantized spin Hall conductivity and mu is the magnetic permeability, the magnetic field inside the sample oscillates spatially. The oscillation vanishes in the non-interacting limit U -> 0. When g > (sigma_{xy}^{s2} …
Silicene is a monolayer of silicon atoms forming a honeycomb lattice. The lattice is actually made of two sublattices with a tiny separation. Silicene is a topological insulator, which is characterized by a full insulating gap in the bulk and helical gapless edges. It undergoes a phase transition from a topological insulator to a band insulator by applying external electric field. Analyzing the spin Chern number based on the effective Dirac theory, we find their origin to be a pseudospin meron in the momentum space. The peudospin degree of freedom arises from the two-sublattice structure. Our …
The topological insulator is a fundamentally new phase of matter, with the striking property that the conduction of electrons occurs only on its surface, not within the bulk, and that conduction is topologically protected. Topological protection, the total lack of scattering of electron waves by disorder, is perhaps the most fascinating and technologically important aspect of this material: it provides robustness that is otherwise known only for superconductors. However, unlike superconductivity and the quantum Hall effect, which necessitate low temperatures or magnetic fields, the immunity to…
One of the intriguing characteristics of honeycomb lattices is the appearance of a pseudo-magnetic field as a result of mechanical deformation. In the case of graphene, the Landau quantization resulting from this pseudo-magnetic field has been measured using scanning tunneling microscopy. Here we show that a signature of the pseudo-magnetic field is a local sublattice symmetry breaking observable as a redistribution of the local density of states. This can be interpreted as a polarization of graphene's pseudospin due to a strain induced pseudo-magnetic field, in analogy to the alignment of a r…
