We consider the combined effects of large spin-orbit couplings and a perpendicular magnetic field in a 2D honeycomb fermionic lattice. This system provides an elegant setup to generate versatile spin textures propagating along the edge of a sample. The spin-orbit coupling is shown to induce topological phase transitions between a helical quantum spin Hall phase and a chiral spin-imbalanced quantum Hall state. Besides, we find that the spin orientation of a single topological edge state can be tuned by a Rashba spin-orbit coupling, opening an interesting route towards quantum spin manipulation. We discuss the possible realization of our results using cold atoms trapped in optical lattices, where large synthetic magnetic fields and spin-orbit couplings can be engineered and finely tuned. In particular, this system would lead to the observation of a time-reversal-symmetry-broken quantum spin Hall phase.
Quantum spin Hall insulator is characterized by the helical edge states, with the spin polarization of electron being locked to its direction of motion. Although the edge-state conduction has been observed, unambiguous evidence of the helical spin texture is still lacking. Here, we investigate the coherent edge-state transport in an interference loop pinched by two point contacts. Due to the helical character, the forward inter-edge scattering enforces a $π$ spin rotation. Two successive processes can only produce a nontrivial $2π$ or trivial $0$ spin rotation, which can be controlled by the R…
We demonstrate the possibility to induce and control peculiar spin textures in a helical Luttinger liquid, by means of a time-dependent magnetic scatterer. The presence of a perturbation that breaks the time-reversal symmetry opens a gap in the spectrum, inducing single-particle backscattering and a peculiar spin response. We show that in the weak backscattering regime asymmetric spin textures emerge at the left and right side of the scatterer, whose spatial oscillations are controlled by the ratio between the magnetization frequency and the Fermi energy and by the electron interaction. This p…
We study the spin texture of a generic helical liquid, the edge modes of a two-dimensional topological insulator with broken axial spin-symmetry. By considering honeycomb and square lattice realizations of topological insulators, we show that in all cases the generic behavior of a momentum-dependent rotation of the spin quantization axis is realized. Here we establish this mechanism also for disk geometries with continuous rotational symmetry. Finally, we demonstrate that the rotation of spin-quantization axis remains intact for arbitrary geometries, i.e. in the absence of any continuous symme…
We investigate one-dimensional (1D) Majorana bound states (MBSs) realized in terms of the helical edge states of a 2D quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSHI) in a heterostructure with a superconducting substrate and two ferromagnetic insulators (FIs). By means of Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach we demonstrate that there is a helical spin texture in the MBS wave function with a pitch proportional to the Fermi momentum of the helical edge states of QSHI. Moreover, simultaneous detection on local density of states by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at a position close to one FI edge and a…
We illustrate possible topological phases in honeycomb lattice with textures in electron hopping energy between nearest-neighboring sites and show that they are characterized by the mirror winding number intimately related to the chiral (or sublattice) symmetry. Analytic wave functions of zero-energy edge modes in ribbon geometry are provided, which are classified into even and odd sectors with respect to the mirror operation with the mirror plane perpendicular to the edge, and evolve into the topological helical edge states at finite momenta. Intriguingly our results demonstrate that in order…
We develop a theory for manipulating the effective band structure of interacting helical edge states realized on the boundary of two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological insulators. For sufficiently strong interaction, an interacting edge band gap develops, spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry on the edge. The resulting spin texture, as well as the energy of the the time-reversal breaking gaps, can be tuned by an external moiré potential (i.e., a superlattice potential). Remarkably, we establish that by tuning the strength and period of the potential, the interacting gaps c…
The surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators exhibit a helical spin texture with spin locked to momentum. To date, however, the direct all-electrical detection of the helical spin texture has remained elusive owing to the lack of necessary spin-sensitive measurements. We here provide a general theory for spin polarized transports of helical Dirac electrons through spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It is found that different from conventional magnetic materials, the tunneling conductance through the TI surface acquires an extra component determined by the in-…
We consider two helical liquids on opposite edges of a narrow two-dimensional topological insulator, which are connected by one or several local tunnel junctions. In the presence of spatially inhomogeneous Rashba spin-orbit coupling, the spin textures of the helical states on opposite edges are different. We demonstrate that this has a strong impact on the electron transport between the edges. In particular, in the case of many random tunnel contacts, the localization length depends strongly on the spin textures of the edge states.
A differential coupling of topological surface states to left- versus right-circularly polarized light is the basis of many opto-spintronics applications of topological insulators. Here we report direct evidence of circular dichroism from the surface states of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ using a laser-based time-of-flight angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By employing a novel sample rotational analysis, we resolve unusual modulations in the circular dichroism photoemission pattern as a function of both energy and momentum, which perfectly mimic the predicted but hitherto un-observed three-dimensiona…
We study dynamical mass generation and the resultant helical spin orders in topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals, including the edge states of quantum spin Hall insulators, the surface states of weak topological insulators, and the bulk materials of Weyl semimetals. In particular, the helical spin textures of Weyl semimetals manifest the spin-momentum locking of Weyl fermions in a visible manner. The spin-wave fluctuations of the helical order carry electric charge density; therefore, the spin textures can be electrically controlled in a simple and predictable manner.
The competition between the ferromagnetic exchange interaction and anti-symmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can stabilize a helical phase or support the formation of skyrmions. In thin films of chiral magnets, the current density can be large enough to unpin the helical phase and reveal its nontrivial dynamics. We theoretically study the dynamics of the helical phase under spin-transfer torques that reveal distinct orientation processes, driven by topological defects in the bulk or induced by edges, limited by instabilities at higher currents. Our experiments confirm the possibility of…
Quantum Hall edge modes are chiral while quantum spin Hall edge modes are helical. However, unlike chiral edge modes which always occur in topological systems, quasi-helical edge modes may arise in a trivial insulator too. These trivial quasi-helical edge modes are not topologically protected and therefore need to be distinguished from helical edge modes arising due to topological reasons. Earlier conductance measurements were used to identify these helical states, in this work we report on the advantage of using the non local shot noise as a probe for the helical nature of these states as als…
Recent research on disorder effects in topological phases in quasicrystalline systems has received much attention. In this work, by numerically computing the (spin) Bott index and the thermal conductance, we reveal the effects of disorder on a class D chiral topological superconductor and a class DIII time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor in a two-dimensional Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattice. We demonstrate that both the topologically protected chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are robust against weak disorder in the quasicrystalline lattice. More fascinating is…
The metallic surface states of a topological insulator support helical Dirac fermions protected by topology with their spin locked perpendicular to their momentum. They can acquire mass through magnetic doping or through hybridization of states on opposite faces of a thin sample. In this case there can be a component of electron spin oriented perpendicular to the surface plane. The electron-phonon interaction renormalizes the dynamics of the charge carriers through their spectral density. It also modifies the gap channel and a second spectral function enters which, not only determines the out …
In this study, we theoretically show that in a helical crystal, a current is induced by chiral phonons representing the microscopic local rotation of atoms. By treating the rotational motion as a perturbation, we calculate the time-dependent current by using the adiabatic Berry phase method. The time average of the current along the helical axis becomes finite in the metallic phase but it vanishes in the insulating phase. On the other hand, the current in the hexagonal plane changes with time, but its time average vanishes due to the threefold rotation space-time symmetry. We show that the tim…
Spin polarized scanning tunneling microscopy is used to directly image topological magnetic textures in thin films of MnGe, and to correlate the magnetism with structure probed at the atomic-scale. Our images indicate helical stripe domains, each characterized by a single wavevector Q, and their associated helimagnetic domain walls, in contrast to the 3Q magnetic state seen in the bulk. Combining our surface measurements with micromagnetic modeling, we deduce the three-dimensional orientation of the helical wavevectors and gain detailed understanding of the structure of individual domain walls…
The physical origin of the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has puzzled experimental and theoretical researchers over the past few years. Early experiments were interpreted in terms of unconventional spin-orbit interactions mediated by the helical geometry. However, more recent experimental studies have clearly revealed that electronic exchange interactions also play a key role in the magnetic response of chiral molecules in singlet states. In this investigation, we use spin-polarized closed shell density functional theory calculations to address the influence of exch…
We develop an effective medium theory for electromagnetic wave propagation through gapless non-uniform systems with dynamic chiral magnetic effect. The theory allows to calculate macroscopic-disorder-induced corrections to the values of optical, as well as chiral magnetic conductivities. In particular, we show that spatial fluctuations of optical conductivity induce corrections to the effective value of the chiral magnetic conductivity. Experimentally, these corrections can be observed as sharp features in the Faraday rotation angle near frequencies that correspond to the bulk plasmon resonanc…
Chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are two archetypal gapless excitations of two-dimensional topological superconductors. They belong to superconductors from two different Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes characterized by $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant respectively. It seems improbable to tune a pair of co-propagating chiral edge modes to counter-propagate without symmetry breaking. Here we show that such a direct topological transition is in fact possible, provided the system possesses an additional symmetry $\mathcal{O}$ which changes the bulk topological invaria…
We derive the spin texture of a weak topological insulator via a supersymmetric approach that includes the roles of the bulk gap edge states and surface band bending. We find the spin texture can take one of four forms: (i) helical, (ii) hyperbolic, (iii) hedgehog, with spins normal to the Dirac-Weyl cone of the surface state, and (iv) hyperbolic hedgehog. Band bending determines the winding number in the case of a helical texture, and for all textures can be used to tune the spin texture polarization to zero. For the weak topological insulator SnTe, we show that inclusion of band bending is c…

We present the transfer of the spatially variant polarization of topologically structured light to the spatial spin texture in a semiconductor quantum well. The electron spin texture, which is a circular pattern with repeating spin-up and spin-down states whose repetition rate is determined by the topological charge, is directly excited by a vector vortex beam with a spatial helicity structure. The generated spin texture efficiently evolves into a helical spin wave pattern owing to the spin-orbit effective magnetic fields in the persistent spin helix state by controlling the spatial wave numbe…
In the presence of the fluid helicity $\boldsymbol{v} \cdot \boldsymbolω$, the magnetic field induces an electric current of the form $\boldsymbol{j} = C_{\rm HME} (\boldsymbol{v} \cdot \boldsymbolω) \boldsymbol{B}$. This is the helical magnetic effect (HME). We show that for massless Dirac fermions with charge $e=1$, the transport coefficient $C_{\rm HME}$ is fixed by the chiral anomaly coefficient $C=1/(2π^2)$ as $C_{\rm HME} = C/2$ independently of interactions. We show the conjecture that the coefficient of the magnetovorticity coupling for the local vector charge, $n = C_{B ω} \boldsymbol…
The spin-dependent electron transmission through a helical membrane with account of linear spin-orbit interaction has been investigated by numerically solving the Schrödinger equation in cylindrical coordinates . It is shown that the spin precession is affected by the magnitude of geometric parameters and chirality of the membrane. This effect is also explained analytically by using the perturbation theory in the weak coupling regime. In the strong coupling regime, the current spin polarization is evident when the number of the open modes in leads is larger than that of the open channels in th…
We study the electronic transport across an electrostatically-gated lateral junction in a HgTe quantum well, a canonical 2D topological insulator, with and without applied magnetic field. We control carrier density inside and outside a junction region independently and hence tune the number and nature of 1D edge modes propagating in each of those regions. Outside the 2D gap, magnetic field drives the system to the quantum Hall regime, and chiral states propagate at the edge. In this regime, we observe fractional plateaus which reflect the equilibration between 1D chiral modes across the juncti…
Helicity of free massless Dirac fermions is a conserved, Lorentz-invariant quantity at the level of the classical equations of motion. For a generic ensemble consisting of particles and antiparticles, the helical and chiral charges are different conserved quantities. The flow of helicity can be modelled by the helicity current, which is again conserved in the absence of interactions. Similar to the axial vortical effect which generates an axial (chiral) current, the helicity current is induced by vorticity in a finite temperature medium with vector (electrical) charge imbalance via the helical…
Spin-helical states, which arise in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) channels with spin-orbital (SO) coupling, underpin efforts to realize topologically-protected quantum bits based on Majorana modes in semiconductor nanowires. Detecting helical states is challenging due to non-idealities present in real devices. Here we show by means of tight-binding calculations that by using ferromagnetic contacts it is possible to detect helical modes with high sensitivity even in the presence of realistic device effects, such as quantum interference. This is possible because of the spin-selective transmission p…
We study the effect of electron-phonon interactions on the electrical conductance of a helical edge state of a two-dimensional topological insulator. We show that the edge deformation caused by bulk acoustic phonons modifies the spin texture of the edge state, and that the resulting spin-phonon coupling leads to inelastic backscattering which makes the transport diffusive. Using a semiclassical Boltzmann equation we compute the electrical conductivity and show that it exhibits a metallic Bloch-Grüneisen law. At temperatures on the order of the Debye temperature of the host material, spin-phono…
Chirality in inorganic nanoparticles and nanostructures has gained increasing scientific interest, because of the possibility to tune their ability to interact differently with left- and right-handed circularly polarized light. In some cases, the optical activity is hypothesized to originate from a chiral morphology of the nanomaterial. However, quantifying the degree of chirality in objects with sizes of tens of nanometers is far from straightforward. Electron tomography offers the possibility to faithfully retrieve the three-dimensional morphology of nanomaterials, but only a qualitative int…
Noncollinear magnetism opens exciting possibilities to generate topological superconductivity. Here, we focus on helical and cycloidal magnetic textures in magnet-superconductor hybrid structures in a background magnetic field. We demonstrate that this system can enter a topological phase which can be understood as a set of parallel topological wires. We explore and confirm this idea in depth with three different approaches: a continuum model, a tight-binding model based on the magnetic unit cell, and exact diagonalization on a finite two-dimensional lattice. The key signature of this topologi…
Three-dimensional topological solitons attract a great deal of interest in fields ranging from particle physics to cosmology but remain experimentally elusive in solid-state magnets. Here we numerically predict magnetic heliknotons, an embodiment of such nonzero-Hopf-index solitons localized in all spatial dimensions while embedded in a helical or conical background of chiral magnets. We describe conditions under which heliknotons emerge as metastable or ground-state localized nonsingular structures with fascinating knots of magnetization field in widely studied materials. We demonstrate magne…

We theoretically show that in a crystal with a helical lattice structure, orbital and spin magnetizations along a helical axis are induced by an electric current along the helical axis. We propose a simple tight-binding model for calculations, and the results can be generalized to any helical crystals. The induced magnetizations are opposite for right-handed and left-handed helices. The current-induced spin magnetization along the helical axis comes from a radial spin texture on the Fermi surface. This is in sharp contrast to Rashba systems where the induced spin magnetization is perpendicular…
The Ginzburg-Landau free energy of a conventional superconductor coupled to a helimagnet is microscopically derived using functional field integral techniques. We show that the spin texture leads to a Lifshitz invariant in the free energy, which couples the momentum density of the superconducting condensate to the magnetization of the helimagnet. For helimagnets with a conical texture, the Lifshitz invariant yields a spatial modulation of the superconducting phase along the helical wavevector of the magnetic texture. Based on self-consistent numerical calculations, we verify the theoretical fo…
Novel types of barrel-shaped chiral skyrmions can exist as isolated topological defects or as bound states in magnetic nanolayers with intrinsic and surface/interface induced chirality. The equilibrium parameters of chiral modulations calculated as functions of applied fields, layer thicknesses, and values of surface and volume uniaxial anisotropies allow to find optimal parameters for skyrmionic states in magnetic nanolayers. Our findings also show that in cholesteric cells with homeotropic anchoring smooth skyrmionic textures can be induced as an intriguing alternative to common disclination…
A quantum Hall edge state provides a rich foundation to study electrons in 1-dimension (1d) but is limited to chiral propagation along a single direction. Here, we demonstrate a versatile platform to realize new 1d systems made by combining quantum Hall edge states of opposite chiralities in a graphene electron-hole bilayer. Using this approach, we engineer helical 1d edge conductors where the counterpropagating modes are localized in separate electron and hole layers by a tunable electric field. These helical conductors exhibit strong nonlocal transport signals and suppressed backscattering d…
Although indications are that a single chiral quantum anomalous Hall(QAH) edge mode might have been experimentally detected. There have been very many recent experiments which conjecture that a single chiral QAH edge mode always materializes along with a pair of quasi-helical quantum spin Hall (QSH) edge modes. The reason for this seems to lie in the origin of QAH edge modes. These evolve from QSH edge modes via suppression of one of the spin edge modes by application of a ferromagnet or magnetic impurity. In this work we deal with a substantial 'What If ?' question- in case the QSH edge modes…
Recent experimental investigations of arrays of magnetic atoms deposited on top of a superconductor have opened a new chapter in the search of topological superconductivity. We generalize the microscopic model derived by Pientka et al. [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{88}, 155420 (2013)] to accommodate the effects of finite supercurrent in the host material. Previously it was discovered that helical chains with nonplanar textures are plagued by a gapless phase. We show that by employing supercurrent it is possible to tune the chain from the gapless phase to the topological gapped phase. It is also possib…
Theory of interference-induced quantum corrections to conductivity is developed for two dimensional systems with chiral spin textures including skyrmions. The effect of exchange interaction between electrons and spin textures on weak localization of electronic waves is studied. The spin dephasing rates are calculated as functions of the spin texture size. The anomalous magnetoresistance is shown to be governed by the size and magnetization spatial distribution of the spin textures. The effect of average magnetization-induced spin splitting on weak localization is analyzed. The sign-alternating…
Helical symmetry of massive Dirac fermions is broken explicitly in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. Here we present two equations for the divergence of helical and axial-vector currents following the Jackiw-Johnson approach to the anomaly of the neutral axial vector current. We discover the contribution from the helical symmetry breaking is attributed to the occupancy of the two states at the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band. The explicit symmetry breaking fully cancels the anomalous correction from the quantum fluctuation in the band gap. The chiral a…
We investigate the existence and stability of skyrmions in a frustrated chiral ferromagnet by considering the competition between ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbour (NN) interaction ($J_1$) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction ($J_2$). Contrary to the general wisdom that long-range ferromagnetic order is not energy preferable under frustration, the skyrmion lattice not only exists but is even stable for a large field range when $J_2 \leq J_1$ compared with frustration-free systems. We defend that the enlargement of stability window of skyrmions is a consequenc…
We show that edges of Quantum Spin Hall topological insulators represent a natural platform for realization of exotic supersolid phase. On one hand, fermionic edge modes are helical due to the nontrivial topology of the bulk. On the other hand, a disorder at the edge or magnetic adatoms may produce a dense array of localized spins interacting with the helical electrons. The spin subsystem is magnetically frustrated since the indirect exchange favors formation of helical spin order and the direct one favors (anti)ferromagnetic ordering of the spins. At a moderately strong direct exchange, the c…
The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has been confirmed experimentally for a large class of organic molecules. Adequately modeling the effect remains a challenging task, with both phenomenological models and first-principle simulations yielding inconclusive results. Building upon a previously presented model by K. Michaeli and R. Naaman (J. Phys. Chem C 123, 17043 (2019)) we systematically investigate an effective 1-dimensional model derived as the limit of a 3-dimensional quantum system with strong confinement and including spin-orbit coupling. Having a simple analytic structu…
A minimal model is exactly solved for electron spin transport on a helix. Electron transport is assumed to be supported by well oriented $p_z$ type orbitals on base molecules forming a staircase of definite chirality. In a tight binding interpretation, the SOC opens up an effective $π_z-π_z$ coupling via interbase $p_{x,y}-p_z$ hopping, introducing spin coupled transport. The resulting continuum model spectrum shows two Kramers doublet transport channels with a gap proportional to the SOC. Each doubly degenerate channel satisfies time reversal symmetry, nevertheless, a bias chooses a transport…
