The spin-dependent electron transmission through a helical membrane with account of linear spin-orbit interaction has been investigated by numerically solving the Schrödinger equation in cylindrical coordinates . It is shown that the spin precession is affected by the magnitude of geometric parameters and chirality of the membrane. This effect is also explained analytically by using the perturbation theory in the weak coupling regime. In the strong coupling regime, the current spin polarization is evident when the number of the open modes in leads is larger than that of the open channels in the membrane. Moreover, we find that the chirality of the helical membrane can determine the orientation of current spin polarization. Therefore, one may get totally opposite spin currents from the helical membranes rolled against different directions.
We analyze the time evolution of spin-polarized electron wave packets injected into the edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. In the presence of electron interactions, the system is described as a helical Luttinger liquid and injected electrons fractionalize. However, because of the presence of metallic detectors, no evidences of fractionalization are encoded in dc measurements, and in this regime the system do not show deviations from its non-interacting behavior. Nevertheless, we show that the helical Luttinger liquid nature emerges in the transient dynamics, where signatur…
We calculate spin transport in two-dimensional waveguides in the presence of spatially modulated Zeeman-split energy bands. We show that in a regime where the spin evolution is predominantly adiabatic the spin backscattering rate can be tuned via diabatic Landau-Zener transitions between the spin-split bands [C. Betthausen et. al., Science 337, 324 (2012)]. This mechanism is tolerant against spin-independent scattering processes. Completely spin-polarized systems show full spin backscattering, and thus current switching. In partially spin-polarized systems a spatial sequence of Landau-Zener tr…
Spin-helical states, which arise in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) channels with spin-orbital (SO) coupling, underpin efforts to realize topologically-protected quantum bits based on Majorana modes in semiconductor nanowires. Detecting helical states is challenging due to non-idealities present in real devices. Here we show by means of tight-binding calculations that by using ferromagnetic contacts it is possible to detect helical modes with high sensitivity even in the presence of realistic device effects, such as quantum interference. This is possible because of the spin-selective transmission p…
The helical distribution of the electronic density in chiral molecules, such as DNA and bacteriorhodopsin, has been suggested to induce a spin-orbit coupling interaction that may lead to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Key ingredients for the theoretical modelling are, in this context, the helically shaped potential of the molecule and, concomitantly, a Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling due to the appearance of a magnetic field in the electron reference frame. Symmetries of these models clearly play a crucial role in explaining the observed effect, but a thorough …
Topological protection of edge state in quantum spin Hall systems relies only on time-reversal symmetry. Hence, S z conservation on the edge can be relaxed which can have an interferometric manifestation in terms of spin Berry phase. Primarily it could lead to the generation of spin Berry phase arising from a closed loop dynamics of electrons. Our work provides a minimal framework to generate and detect these effects by employing both spin-unpolarized and spin-polarized leads. We show that spin-polarized leads could lead to resonances or anti-resonances in the two-terminal conductance of the i…
We study the effect of bias voltage on the nuclear spin polarization of a ballistic wire, which contains electrons and nuclei interacting via hyperfine interaction. In equilibrium, the localized nuclear spins are helically polarized due to the electron-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Focusing here on non-equilibrium, we find that an applied bias voltage induces a uniform polarization, from both helically polarized and unpolarized spins available for spin flips. Once a macroscopic uniform polarization in the nuclei is established, the nuclear spin helix rotates with f…
We study the nonequilibrium effects of spin and/or electric currents on the helical indirect exchange interactions of local spins that embedded in general open electronic systems. Especially, besides the synthesized anisotropic Heisenberg interactions, we find that the synthetic helical indirect exchange interactions possess two parts: antisymmetric (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction) and symmetric (Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony interaction), which are all formulated in terms of Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's functions. The presence of either spin-orbit coupling or spin polarized curr…
Semiconductors with strong spin-orbit interactions can exhibit a helical gap with spin-momentum locking opened by a magnetic field. Such a gap is highly spin selective as a result of a topologically protected spin-momentum locking, which can be used for spin filtering. We experimentally demonstrate such a spin filtering effect in a quasi-ballistic p-type germanium/silicon core/shell nanowire (NW), which possesses a pseudo-helical gap without the application of magnetic field. Polarized hole spin injection to the NW is achieved using cobalt ferromagnetic contacts with controlled natural surface…
A proposal of electrically controlled spin transistor in helical magnetic field is presented. In the proposed device, the transistor action is driven by the Landau-Zener transitions that lead to a backscattering of spin polarized electrons and switching the transistor into the high-resistance state (off state). The on/off state of the transistor can be controlled by the all-electric means using Rashba spin-orbit coupling that can be tuned by the voltages applied to the side electrodes.
We study an electrically controlled quantum spin Hall antidot embedded in a two-dimensional topological insulating bar. Helical edge states around the antidot and along the edges of the bar are tunnel coupled. The close connection between spin and chirality, typical of helical systems, allows to generate a spin-polarized current flowing across the bar. This current is studied as a function of the external voltages, by varying the asymmetry between the barriers. For asymmetric setups, a switching behavior of the spin current is observed as the bias is increased, both in the absence and in the p…
Topological electric quadrupole is a recently proposed concept that extends the theory of electric polarization of crystals to higher orders. Such a quadrupole phase supports topological states localized on both edges and corners. In this work, we show that in a quadrupole phase of honeycomb lattice, topological helical edge states and pseudo-spin-polarized corner states appear by making use of a pseudo-spin degree of freedom related to point group symmetry. Furthermore, we argue that a general condition for emergence of helical edge states in a (pseudo-)spinful quadrupole phase is mirror or t…
Spin-momentum helical locking is one of the most important properties of the nontrivial topological surface states (TSS) in 3D topological insulators (TI). It underlies the iconic topological protection (suppressing elastic backscattering) of TSS and is foundational to many exotic physics (eg., majorana fermions) and device applications (eg., spintronics) predicted for TIs. Based on this spin-momentum locking, a current flowing on the surface of a TI would be spin-polarized in a characteristic in-plane direction perpendicular to the current, and the spin-polarization would reverse when the cur…
We experimentally investigate spin-polarized electron transport between a permalloy ferromagnet and the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with band inversion, realized in a narrow, 8~nm wide HgTe quantum well. In zero magnetic field, we observe strong asymmetry of the edge potential distribution with respect to the ferromagnetic ground lead. This result indicates, that the helical edge channel, specific for the structures with band inversion even at the conductive bulk, is strongly coupled to the ferromagnetic side contact, possibly due to the effects of proximity magnetization. It all…

Helical metals realized at the surfaces of topological insulators have recently attracted wide attention due to their potential applications in spintronics. In this paper we propose to realize helical metals through the application of THz light on common two-dimensional semiconductors and discuss their observable properties. We show that the application of circularly polarized light enables coherent manipulation of magnetization. Moreover, for a range of chemical potentials the system behaves as a helical metal, exhibiting a large anomalous Hall conductivity and associated magnetoelectric effe…
The physical origin of the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has puzzled experimental and theoretical researchers over the past few years. Early experiments were interpreted in terms of unconventional spin-orbit interactions mediated by the helical geometry. However, more recent experimental studies have clearly revealed that electronic exchange interactions also play a key role in the magnetic response of chiral molecules in singlet states. In this investigation, we use spin-polarized closed shell density functional theory calculations to address the influence of exch…
Nontrivial topology of interfaces separating anti-chiral phases in helical magnets result in new effects as they interact with spin polarized current. These interfces or vortex walls consist of a one dimensional array of vortex lines. Topological Hall effect comes as a natural expectation. Also Lenz's law will result in a new damping mechanism in these systems. We study the dynamics of these wall interacting with electric current and use fundamental electromagntic laws to calculate this effect. On the other hand discrete nature of these walls affects their pinning and result in low depinning c…
The surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators exhibit a helical spin texture with spin locked to momentum. To date, however, the direct all-electrical detection of the helical spin texture has remained elusive owing to the lack of necessary spin-sensitive measurements. We here provide a general theory for spin polarized transports of helical Dirac electrons through spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It is found that different from conventional magnetic materials, the tunneling conductance through the TI surface acquires an extra component determined by the in-…
We investigate theoretically the electron states in HgTe quantum dots (QDs) with inverted band structures. In sharp contrast to conventional semiconductor quantum dots, the quantum states in the gap of HgTe quantum dot with an inverted band structure are fully spin-polarized, and show ring-like density distributions near the boundary of the QD and spin-angular momentum locking. The persistent charge currents and magnetic moments, i.e., the Aharonov-Bohm effect, can be observed in such QD structure and oscillate with increasing magnetic fields. This feature offers us a practical way to detect t…
We report a theoretical study of the quantized spin pump in a traditional two-parameter quantum pump device that is based on the helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator. By introducing two time-dependent magnetizations out of phase as the pumping parameters, we found that when the Fermi energy resides in the energy gap opened by magnetization, an integer number of charges or spins can be pumped out in a pumping cycle and ascribed to the possible topological interface state born in between the two pumping potentials. The quantized pump current can be fully spin-polarized, spin-unpo…
We propose a three terminal spin polarized stm setup for probing the helical nature of the Luttinger liquid edge state that appears in the quantum spin Hall system. We show that the three-terminal tunneling conductance strongly depends on the angle ($θ$) between the magnetization direction of the tip and the local orientation of the electron spin on the edge while the two terminal conductance is independent of this angle. We demonstrate that chiral injection of an electron into the helical Luttinger liquid (which occurs when $θ$ is zero or $π$) is associated with fractionalization of the spin …

Free-standing ferromagnetic nano-membranes with thicknesses below 10 nm could effectively be used for spin selective filtering of electrons. Such membranes can work both as spin detectors in electron-spectroscopy, -microscopy and -diffraction as well as a source of spin polarized electrons. Theoretical studies and previous work has indicated that ferromagnetic membranes of a few nm have Sherman functions in the 30-60 % range and would provide an effective alternative to current spin detection technology. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of gold capped Co nano-membranes with a 2.6 nm Co laye…
Both the theoretical and experimental discovery of single-Dirac-cone topological-insulator-class was reported at arXiv:0812.2078 (2008) [Y. Here we report the first observation of Spin-Momentum Helical Locking and Spin-Vortex structures in Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, demonstrate the existence of Topological-Order at 300K and report a material realization of topological-transport-regime for helical Dirac fermions. Our results reveal a one-to-one spin-momentum locked Dirac structure in Bi2Se3 and …
All-electrical (magnetic-material-free) spin injection is one of the outstanding goals in spintronics. Topological insulators (TIs) have been recognized as a promising electrically controlled spin source thanks to the strong spin-orbit coupling and in particular, the spin-momentum locked topological surface states (TSS) supporting helically spin polarized currents. Many TI materials such as Bi-based chalcogenides are also layered 2D materials and can be incorporated into van der Waals (vdW) coupled heterostructures, opening the possibility of the utilization of TIs for electrical spin injectio…
Using spin dependent specular and off-specular polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR), we report the observation of a twisted helical magnetic structure with planar 2π domain wall (DW) and highly correlated magnetic domains in a Gd/Co multilayer. Specular PNR with polarization analysis reveals the formation of planar 2πDWs below a compensation temperature (TComp), resulting to positive exchange bias in this system. Off-specular PNR with spin polarization showed development of magnetic inhomogenities (increase in magnetic roughness) for central part (thickness ~ 25-30 Å) of each Gd layer, where m…
Chirality in inorganic nanoparticles and nanostructures has gained increasing scientific interest, because of the possibility to tune their ability to interact differently with left- and right-handed circularly polarized light. In some cases, the optical activity is hypothesized to originate from a chiral morphology of the nanomaterial. However, quantifying the degree of chirality in objects with sizes of tens of nanometers is far from straightforward. Electron tomography offers the possibility to faithfully retrieve the three-dimensional morphology of nanomaterials, but only a qualitative int…
Non-centrosymmetric superconductors exhibit the magnetoelectric effect which manifests itself in the appearance of the magnetic spin polarization in response to a dissipationless electric current (supercurrent). While much attention has been dedicated to the thermodynamic version of this phenomenon (Edelstein effect), non-equilibrium transport magnetoelectric effects have not been explored yet. We propose the magnetoelectric Andreev effect (MAE) which consists in the generation of spin-polarized triplet Andreev conductance by an electric supercurrent. The MAE stems from the spin polarization o…
Microspectrometer features remarkable portability and integration, and is prospected to provide quick detection tools to daily life and revolutionary techniques to researchers. For the extremely finite footprint, microspectrometer can hardly work to analyze the polarization feature by placing polarizer in the optical path like conventional spectrometers. Here, we demonstrate a novel 2D wavelength-polarization dispersive microspectroscope based on carbon nanocoil with plasmonic Au nanopariticles (Au/CNC) as a dispersive component. Explored by the microspectrum and Fourier-space microscopy, a un…
Topological insulators (TIs) are an unusual phase of quantum matter with nontrivial spin-momentum locked topological surface states (TSS). The electrical detection of spin-momentum locking of the TSS in 3D TIs has been lacking till very recently. Many of the results are measured on samples with significant bulk conduction, such as metallic Bi2Se3, where it can be challenging to separate the surface and bulk contribution to the measured spin signal. Here, we report spin potentiometric measurements in thin flakes exfoliated from bulk insulating 3D TI Bi2Te2Se (BTS221) crystals, using two outside…
A differential coupling of topological surface states to left- versus right-circularly polarized light is the basis of many opto-spintronics applications of topological insulators. Here we report direct evidence of circular dichroism from the surface states of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ using a laser-based time-of-flight angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By employing a novel sample rotational analysis, we resolve unusual modulations in the circular dichroism photoemission pattern as a function of both energy and momentum, which perfectly mimic the predicted but hitherto un-observed three-dimensiona…

Motivated by a recent experiment (Sanchez-Yamagishi et.al, arXiv:1602.06815) reporting evidence of helical spin-polarized edge states in layer-biased twisted bilayer graphene under a magnetic flux, we study the possibility of stabilising a Quantum Spin Hall (QSH) phase in such a system, without Zeeman or spin-orbit couplings, and with a QSH gap induced instead by electronic interactions. We analyse how magnetic flux, electric field, interlayer rotation angle, and interactions (treated at a mean field level) combine to produce a pseudo-QSH with broken time-reversal symmetry, and spin-polarized …
The motion of a relativistic particle is linked to its spin by the Dirac equation. Remarkably, electrons in two-dimensional materials can mimic such Dirac particles but must always appear in pairs of opposite spin chirality. Using topological ideas of chiral boundary electrons wrapping a three-dimensional crystal with tuned spin-orbit coupling, we show that elusive unpaired Dirac fermions exist on the surface of a topological insulator parent matrix, pure antimony. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we image coherent quantum interference between t…
Spin polarized scanning tunneling microscopy is used to directly image topological magnetic textures in thin films of MnGe, and to correlate the magnetism with structure probed at the atomic-scale. Our images indicate helical stripe domains, each characterized by a single wavevector Q, and their associated helimagnetic domain walls, in contrast to the 3Q magnetic state seen in the bulk. Combining our surface measurements with micromagnetic modeling, we deduce the three-dimensional orientation of the helical wavevectors and gain detailed understanding of the structure of individual domain walls…
