The effect of a weak electrical modulation on spin Hall resonance is presented here. In presence of the magnetic field normal to the plane of the motion of electron, the Landau levels are formed which get broadened due to the weak modulation. The width of the Landau levels broadening are periodic with the inverse magnetic field. There is a certain magnetic field for which the crossing of Landau levels between spin-up and spin-down branches takes place. This gives rise to the resonance in the spin Hall conductivity (SHC). The Landau levels broadening or the energy correction due to the modulation removes the singularity appears at the resonance field in SHC, leading to the suppression of SHC accompanied by two new peaks around this point. The separation of these two peaks increases with the increase of the modulation period. Moreover, we find that the height of the two peaks are also modulation period dependent.
We have investigated the effect of unidirectional periodic potential modulation on the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states located within the filling factor range $1<ν<2$. We find that odd-numerator FQH states are strongly suppressed, while the even-numerator ones are less affected or even enhanced, by the introduction of the modulation. In the picture of the composite fermions (CFs), the behaviors are equivalent to the suppression of the spin splitting of the CFs by the modulation. We discuss the origin of the suppression and the possible modulation-induced phase transition from the FQH stat…
The effect of a one-dimensional periodic electrostatic modulation on quantum Hall systems with filling factor ν=1 is studied. We propose that, either when the amplitude of the modulation potential or the tilt angle of the magnetic field is varied, the system can undergo a first-order phase transition from a fully spin-polarized homogeneous state to a partially spin-polarized charge-density-wave state, and show hysteresis behavior of the spin polarization. This is confirmed by our self-consistent numerical calculations within the Hartree-Fock approximation. Finally we suggest that the ν=1/3 fra…
We have investigated the effect of unidirectional periodic potential modulation on the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling factors nu=5/3 and 4/3. For large enough modulation amplitude, we find that the resistivity minimum at nu=5/3 gives way to a peak that grows with decreasing temperature. Density matrix renormalization group calculation reveals that phase transition from FQH state to unidirectional striped state having a period sim 4 l (with l the magnetic length) takes place at nu=1/3 (equivalent to nu=5/3 by the particle-hole symmetry) with the increase of the modulation amplit…
We present a systematic characterization of fluctuations in submicron Hall devices based on GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gas heterostructures at temperatures between 1.5 K to 60 K. A large variety of noise spectra, from 1/f to Lorentzian, are obtained by gating the Hall devices. The noise level can be reduced by up to several orders of magnitude with a moderate gate voltage of 0.2 V, whereas the carrier density increases less than 60% in the same range. The significant dependence of the Hall noise spectra on temperature and gate voltage is explained in terms of the switching processes …
We propose that Hofstadter's butterfly accompanied by quantum Hall effect that is similar to those predicted to occur in 3D tight-binding systems by Koshino {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 1062 (2001)] can be realized in an entirely different system -- 3D metals applied with weak external periodic modulations (e.g., acoustic waves). Namely, an effect of two periodic potentials interferes with Landau's quantization due to an applied magnetic field $\Vec{B}$, resulting generally in fractal energy gaps as a function of the tilting angle of $\Vec{B}$, for which the accompanying quantized …
We consider a system of weakly coupled wires with quantum Hall effect (QHE) and in the presence of a spatially periodic modulation of the chemical potential along the wire, equivalent to a charge density wave (CDW). We investigate the competition between the two effects which both open a gap. We show that by changing the ratio between the amplitudes of the CDW modulation and the tunneling between wires, one can switch between non-topological CDW-dominated phase to topological QHE-dominated phase. Both phases host edge states of chiral and non-chiral nature robust to on-site disorder. However, …
We use a mean field approach to study the conductance modulation of gate controlled semiconductor spin interferometers based on the Rashba spin-orbit coupling effect. The conductance modulation is found to be mostly due to Ramsauer type transmission resonances rather than the Rashba effect in typical structures. This is because of significant reflections at the interferometer's contacts due to large potential barriers and effective mass mismatch between the contact material and the semiconductor. Thus, unless particular care is taken to eliminate these reflections, any observed conductance mod…
High quality chromium (Cr) doped three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) Sb2Te3 films are grown via molecular beam epitaxy on heat-treated insulating SrTiO3(111) substrates. We report that the Dirac surface states are insensitive to Cr doping, and a perfect robust long-range ferromagnetic order is unveiled in epitaxial Sb2-xCrxTe3 films. The anomalous Hall effect is modulated by applying a bottom gate, contrary to the ferromagnetism in conventional diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs), here the coercivity field is not significantly changed with decreasing carrier density. Carrier-indepe…
A two-layer system coupled via tunneling and with different carrier masses in each layer is investigated in the integer quantum Hall regime. Striking deviations of the one-layer Hall conductivity from the usual quantization are found, if resonance between Landau levels of different layers is achieved. The appearance of negative jumps in the Hall conductivity is also predicted under suitable conditions. The results obtained are robust against disorder in the system.
We use the Kubo-Landauer formalism to compute the longitudinal (two-terminal) conductance of a two dimensional electron system placed in a strong perpendicular magnetic field, and subjected to periodic modulations and/or disorder potentials. The scattering problem is recast as a set of inhomogeneous, coupled linear equations, allowing us to find the transmission probabilities from a finite-size system computation; the results are exact for non-interacting electrons. Our method fully accounts for the effects of the disorder and the periodic modulation, irrespective of their relative strength, a…
We report on Cr doping effect in Mn3Sn polycrystalline films with both uniform and modulation doping. It is found that Cr doping with low concentration does not cause notable changes to the structural and magnetic properties of Mn3Sn, but it significantly enhances the anomalous Hall conductivity, particularly for modulation-doped samples at low temperature. A Hall conductivity as high as 184.8 Ω-1 cm-1 is obtained for modulation-doped samples at 50 K, in a sharp contrast to vanishingly small values for undoped samples at the same temperature. We attribute the enhancement to the change of Fermi…
We study effects of tilted magnetic fields on energy levels in a double-quantum-well (DQW) system, focusing on the coupling of subbands and Landau levels (LLs). The subband-LL coupling induces anticrossings between LLs, manifested directly in the magnetoresistance. The anticrossing gap becomes larger than the spin splitting at the tilting angle $θ\sim 20^\circ $ and larger than the cyclotron energy at $θ\sim 50^\circ $, demonstrating that the subband-LL coupling exerts a strong influence on quantum Hall states even in at a relatively small $θ$ and plays a dominant role for larger $θ$. We also …
We consider a system of weakly coupled one-dimensional wires forming a three-dimensional stack in the presence of a spatially periodic modulation of the chemical potential along the wires, equivalent to a charge density wave (CDW). An external static magnetic field is applied parallel to the wire axes. We show that, for a certain parameter regime, due to interplay between the CDW and magnetic field, the system can support a second-order topological phase characterized by the presence of chiral quasi-1D Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) hinge modes. Interestingly, we demonstrate that direction of propa…
We study striped states in the quantum Hall system around half-filled high Landau levels and obtain the optimal orientation of the striped state in the presence of an external unidirectional periodic potential. It is shown that the optimal orientation is orthogonal to the external modulation in the Coulomb dominant regime (the orthogonal phase) and is parallel in the external modulation dominant regime (the parallel phase). The phase boundary of these two phases is determined numerically in the parameter space of the strength and wave number of the external modulation at the half-filled third …
We have measured activation gaps for odd-integer quantum Hall states in a unidirectional lateral superlattice (ULSL) -- a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a unidirectional periodic modulation of the electrostatic potential. By comparing the activation gaps with those simultaneously measured in the adjacent section of the same 2DEG sample without modulation, we find that the gaps are reduced in the ULSL by an amount corresponding to the width acquired by the Landau levels through the introduction of the modulation. The decrement of the activation gap varies with the magnetic fie…
We demonstrate that the spin Hall effect in a thin film with strong spin-orbit scattering can excite magnetic precession in an adjacent ferromagnetic film. The flow of alternating current through a Pt/NiFe bilayer generates an oscillating transverse spin current in the Pt, and the resultant transfer of spin angular momentum to the NiFe induces ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) dynamics. The Oersted field from the current also generates an FMR signal but with a different symmetry. The ratio of these two signals allows a quantitative determination of the spin current and the spin Hall angle.
We study theoretically and experimentally the spin pumping signals induced by the resonance of canted antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and demonstrate that they can generate easily observable inverse spin-Hall voltages. Using a bilayer of hematite/heavy metal as a model system, we measure at room temperature the antiferromagnetic resonance and an associated inverse spin-Hall voltage, as large as in collinear antiferromagnets. As expected for coherent spin-pumping, we observe that the sign of the inverse spin-Hall voltage provides direct information about the mode handedn…
We observe geometric resonance features of composite fermions on the flanks of the even denominator ν = 1/2 fractional quantum Hall state in high-mobility two-dimensional electron and hole systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells and subjected to a weak, strain-induced, unidirectional periodic potential modulation. The features provide a measure of how close to ν = 1/2 the system stays single-component and supports a composite fermion Fermi sea before transitioning into a ν = 1/2 fractional quantum Hall state, presumably the two-component Ψ331 state.
We report on a possible optical tuning of the spin Hall conductivity in mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides. Light beams of frequencies much higher than the energy scale of the system (the \textit{off-resonant} condition) does not excite electrons but rearranges the band structure. The rearrangement is quantitatively established using the Floquet formalism. For such a system of mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, the spin Hall conductivity (calculated with the Kubo expression in presence of disorder) exhibits a drop at higher frequencies and lower intensities. Finally, we comp…
We report a new spin manipulation protocol for periodically reversing the sample magnetization for Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy. The protocol modulates the microwave excitation frequency synchronously with the position of the oscillating detection cantilever, thus allowing manipulation of the spin magnetization independent of both magnetic field gradient strength and cantilever response time. This allows continuous variation of the detected sample volume and is effective regardless of spin relaxation rate. This enhanced flexibility improves the utility of MRFM as a generally applicable …
We address the problem of electronic and nuclear spin resonance of an individual atom on a surface driven by a scanning tunnelling microscope. Several mechanisms have been proposed so far, some of them based on the modulation of exchange and crystal field associated to a piezoelectric displacement of the adatom driven by the RF tip electric field. Here we consider a new mechanism, where the piezoelectric displacement modulates the g factor anisotropy, leading both to electronic and nuclear spin flip transitions. We discuss thoroughly the cases of Ti-H (S = 1/2) and Fe (S = 2) on MgO, relevant …

We demonstrate the generation and detection of spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance in Pt/YIG bilayers. A unique attribute of this system is that the spin Hall effect lies at the heart of both the generation and detection processes and no charge current is passing through the insulating magnetic layer. When the YIG undergoes resonance, a dc voltage is detected longitudinally along the Pt that can be described by two components. One is the mixing of the spin Hall magnetoresistance with the microwave current. The other results from spin pumping into the Pt being converted to a dc current through …
We measure the Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas formed at a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in the terahertz regime close to the cyclotron resonance frequency by employing a highly sensitive Faraday rotation method coupled with electrical gating of the sample to change the electron density. We observe clear plateau-and step-like features in the Faraday rotation angle vs. electron density and magnetic field (Landau-level filling factor), which are the high frequency manifestation of quantum Hall plateaus - a signature of topologically protected edge states. The results are compare…
We show electrical coherent manipulation of quadrupole-split nuclear spin states in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure on the basis of the breakdown of quantum Hall effect. The electric quadrupole splitting in nuclear spin energy levels is intentionally enhanced by applying an external stress to the heterostructure. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra with clearly separated triple peaks are obtained, and Rabi oscillations are observed between the nuclear spin energy levels. The decay of the spin-echo signal is compared between the cases before and after the enhancement of quadrupole splitting.
Via the application of parallel magnetic field, we induce a single-layer to bilayer transition in two-dimensional electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells, and study the geometric resonance of composite fermions (CFs) with a periodic density modulation in our samples. The measurements reveal that CFs exist close to bilayer quantum Hall states, formed at Landau level filling factors $ν=1$ and 1/2. Near $ν=1$, the geometric resonance features are consistent with half the total electron density in the bilayer system, implying that CFs prefer to stay in separate layers and exhibit a tw…
We study the band structure modulation and spin-Hall effect of a two-dimensional heavy-hole system with $k^3$-Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), irradiated by linearly polarized light. We find that the band structure becomes anisotropic under the illumination by the light. Most remarkably, a pair of additional spin-degeneracy points (apart from $Γ$ point) emerge in the energy dispersion, the locations of which are solely determined by the strength of the amplitude of the incident light. If this degeneracy occurs around the Fermi level, the spin-Hall conductivity (SHC) exhibits a resonance. Awa…
We observe nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the fractional quantum Hall regime at Landau level filling factor $ν=2/3$ from simultaneous measurement of longitudinal resistance and photoluminescence (PL). The dynamic nuclear spin polarization is induced by applying a huge electronic current at the spin phase transition point of $ν=2/3$. The NMR spectra obtained from changes in resistance and PL intensity are qualitatively the same; that is, the Knight shift (spin polarized region) and zero-shift (spin unpolarized region) resonances are observed in both. The observed change in PL intensity is …
We present here a way to modulate the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) by anomalous Hall signal and thus measure the domain wall (DW) motion velocity at near-coercivity. We study the magnetization relaxation at the constant field in the longitudinal (Rxx) Hall geometry. We observed asymmetric Rxx peaks that appear at the DW pinning fields. This unusual magnetoresistance behavior is explained by considering the AMR modulation by the anomalous Hall voltage. In the proposed method, using the magnetization relaxation, the real-time DW velocity measurement is much easier in comparison to the oth…
The sensitivity of the Rabi oscillations of a resonantly driven spin-1/2 system to a weak and slow modulation of the static longitudinal magnetic field, B_0, is studied theoretically. We establish the mapping of a weakly driven two-level system with modulation onto a strongly driven system without modulation. The mapping suggests that different regimes of spin dynamics, known for a strongly driven system, can be realized under common experimental conditions of weak driving (driving field B_ 1 << B_ 0) upon proper choice of the domains of modulation frequency, ω_m, and amplitude, B_2. Fast modu…
We present dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in the simplest pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHF) of an InSb two-dimensional electron gas with a large g factor using tilted magnetic fields. The DNP-induced amplitude change of a resistance spike of the QHF at large current enables observation of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance of the high nuclear spin isotope 115In with nine quadrupole splittings. Our results demonstrate the importance of domain structures in the DNP process. The nuclear spin relaxation time T1 in this QHF was relatively short (~ 120 s), and almost tem…
Low-temperature screening properties of the inhomogeneous two-dimensional electron gas in a Hall bar subjected to a strong perpendicular magnetic field are explored using a self-consitent approach. An external oscillating modulation potential with an amplitude of the order of the cyclotron energy is added to the electron-confining background potential, and the resulting change of the self-consistent potential is investigated as a function of modulation strength, magnetic field, and temperature. The consequences of Landau-level pinning and the interplay of compressible and incompressible region…
We introduce a new generic model of a deformed Composite Fermion-Fermi Surface (CF-FS) for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect near $/nu=1/2$ in the presence of a periodic density modulation. Our model permits us to explain recent Surface Acoustic Wave observations of anisotropic anomalies [1,2] in sound velocity and attenuation- appearance of peaks and anisotropy - which originate from contributions to the conductivity tensor due to regions of the CF-FS which are flattened by the applied modulation. The calculated magnetic field and wave vector dependence of the CF conductivity, velocity shift …
Coherent sub-THz phonons incident on a gold grating that is deposited on a dielectric substrate undergo diffraction and thereby induce an alteration of the surface plasmon-polariton resonance. This results in efficient high-frequency modulation (up to 110 GHz) of the structure's reflectivity for visible light in the vicinity of the plasmon-polariton resonance. High modulation efficiency is achieved by designing a periodic nanostructure which provides both plasmon-polariton and phonon resonances. Our theoretical analysis shows that the dynamical alteration of the plasmon-polariton resonance is …
Nanoplasmonics exploits the coupling between light and collective electron density oscillations (plasmons) to bypass the stringent limits imposed by diffraction. This coupling enables confinement of light to sub-wavelength volumes and is usually exploited in nanostructured metals. Substantial efforts are being made at the current frontier of the field to employ electron systems in semiconducting and semimetallic materials since these add the exciting possibility of realizing electrically tunable and/or active nanoplasmonic devices. Here we demonstrate that a suitable design of the doping profi…
An experimental analysis for two parallel conducting layers determines the full resistivity tensor of the parallel layer, at magnetic fields where the other layer is in the quantum Hall regime. In heterostructures which exhibit parallel conduction in the modulation-doped layer, this analysis quantitatively determines the charge density in the doping layer and can be used to estimate the mobility. To illustrate one application, experimental data show magnetic freeze-out of parallel conduction in a modulation doped heterojunction. As another example, the carrier density of a minimally populated …
The physical properties of striped Hall state in the presence of an external unidirectional periodic potential is investigated. The study of searching the optimal orientation of the state is reported for the state at filling factor $ν=2+1/2$ and for the state at higher Landau levels at $l+1/2$ where $l=3,4,5,6,7,8$. It is predicted that two phases of the orientation, parallel phase and perpendicular phase, exist and a phase transition from one to another phase occurs.
It has been shown that Bernal stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) in a uniform magnetic field demonstrates integer quantum Hall effect with a zero Landau-level anomaly \cite{Geimbilayer}. In this article we consider such system in a two dimensional periodic magnetic modulation with square lattice symmetry. It is shown algebraically that the resulting Hofstadter spectrum can be expressed in terms of the corresponding spectrum of monolayer graphene in a similar magnetic modulation. In the weak-field limit, using the tight-binding model, we also derive the Harper-Hofstadter equation for such BLG syste…
We propose a theory for the new effects recently observed by Willett et al [1] in the magnetoresistance of a weakly modulated two dimensional electron gas near filling factor 1/2. Minima in transverse magnetoresistance and maxima in longitudinal magnetoresistance at the same magnetic field producing the new resonance structure are reported. The structure occurs due to geometric resonance of the composite fermion cyclotron orbits with the modulation period of the effective magnetic field $ B_{eff} $ due to the applied density modulation. The transverse minimum occurs due to the inhomogeneity in…
Energy spectrum of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states is composed of single electron energy (Landau energy) neglecting the Coulomb interactions between electrons, classical Coulomb energy and the quantum energy via quantum transitions. Herein, the sum of the Landau energy and the classical Coulomb energy depends upon the value of the filling factor continuously. However, the quantum transition energy discontinuously depends upon the value of the filling factor. This discontinuity yields energy gaps in many stable FQH states. The energy gaps for specific filling factors produce the precise co…
We present measurements of transport through two tunnel-coupled quantum dots of different sizes connected in series in a strong, variable, perpendicular magnetic field. Double dot conductance was measured both as a function of magnetic field, which was varied across the filling factor nu = 4 quantum Hall plateau, and as a function of charge induced evenly on the two dots. The conductance peaks undergo position shifts and height modulations as the magnetic field is varied. These shifts and modulations form a pattern that repeats over large ranges of magnetic field and with the addition of doubl…
We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of parametric resonance of spin wave eigenmodes in Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Pt bilayer nanowires. Using electrically detected magnetic resonance, we measure the spectrum of spin wave eigenmodes in transversely magnetized nanowires and study parametric excitation of these eigenmodes by a microwave magnetic field. We also develop an analytical theory of spin wave eigenmodes and their parametric excitation in the nanowire geometry that takes into account magnetic dilution at the nanowire edges. We measure tuning of the parametric resonance threshold…
The spectrally resolved Terahertz photoconductivity between two separately contacted edge-channels of a two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall regime is investigated. We use a not-simply-connected sample geometry which is topologically equivalent to a Corbino disc. Due to the high sensitivity of our novel sample structure, a weak resonance situated on the high energy side of the well known cyclotron resonance is revealed. The magnetic field as well as the carrier density dependence of this weak resonance, in comparison with different models suggests that the additional resonance is a…
We investigate ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) modulation in $d$-wave superconductor (SC)/ferromagnetic insulator (FI) bilayer systems theoretically. The modulation of the Gilbert damping in these systems reflects the existence of nodes in the $d$-wave SC and shows power-law decay characteristics within the low-temperature and low-frequency limit. Our results indicate the effectiveness of use of spin pumping as a probe technique to determine the symmetry of unconventional SCs with high sensitivity for nanoscale thin films.
We analyse theoretically the conductivity of a quantum Hall system exposed to microwave radiation. We find that whenever microwave frequency and cyclotron frequency are commensurate, there is a {\em resonance} in the longitudinal conductivity. This resonance has the form of the derivative of a Lorentz function; precisely at the center of the resonance, the microwave induced conductivity vanishes. Between the resonances there are maxima and minima, the depths and precise positions of which depend on the microwave amplitude and the scattering rate of the impurities. We demonstrate the existence …
We present theoretically the thermal Hall effect of magnons in a ferromagnetic lattice with a Kekulé-O coupling (KOC) modulation and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Through a strain-based mechanism for inducing the KOC modulation, we identify four topological phases in terms of the KOC parameter and DMI strength. We calculate the thermal magnon Hall conductivity ${κ^{xy}}$ at low temperature in each of these phases. We predict an unconventional conductivity due to a non-zero Berry curvature emerging from band proximity effects in the topologically trivial phase. We find sign changes…
The intrinsic spin Hall conductance shows rich sign changes by applying a perpendicular magnetic field in a two-dimensional hole gas. Especially, a notable sign changes can be achieved by adjusting the characteristic length of the Rashba coupling and hole density at moderate magnetic fields. This sign issue may be easily realized in experiments. The oscillations of the intrinsic spin Hall conductance as a function of 1/$B$ is nothing else but Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, and the additional beatings can be quantitatively related to the value of the spin-orbit coupling parameter. The Zeeman s…
Studies of electronic interferometers, based on edge channel transport in the quantum Hall effect regime, have been stimulated by the search for evidence of abelian and non-abelian anyonic statistics of fractional charges. These studies found the ubiquitous electronic Fabry-Perot interferometer to be Coulomb dominated, thus masking coherent Aharonov-Bohm interference. Typically, the main signature of the Coulomb dominated regime is the lack of interference of the outer most edge channel as the magnetic field is varied. This seemingly surprising behavior is explained by the shrinkage of the inte…
We theoretically study Aharonov-Bohm resonances in an antidot system with multiple bound modes in the integer quantum Hall regime, taking capacitive interactions between the modes into account. We find the spectator behavior that the resonances of some modes disappear and instead are replaced by those of other modes, due to internal charge relaxation between the modes. This behavior is a possible origin of the features of previous experimental data which remain unexplained, spectator behavior in an antidot molecule and resonances in a single antidot with three modes.
We use a scanning capacitance probe to image transport in the quantum Hall system. Applying a DC bias voltage to the tip induces a ring-shaped incompressible strip (IS) in the 2D electron system (2DES) that moves with the tip. At certain tip positions, short-range disorder in the 2DES creates a quantum dot island in the IS. These islands enable resonant tunneling across the IS, enhancing its conductance by more than four orders of magnitude. The images provide a quantitative measure of disorder and suggest resonant tunneling as the primary mechanism for transport across ISs.
We investigate nonperturbatively the effect of a magnetic dopant impurity on the edge transport of a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator. We show that for a strongly coupled magnetic dopant located near the edge of a system, a pair of transmission anti-resonances appear. When the chemical potential is on resonance, interaction effects broaden the anti-resonance width with decreasing temperature, thus suppressing transport for both repulsive and moderately attractive interactions. Consequences for the recently observed QSH insulating phase of the $1$-T$^{\prime}$ of WTe$_2$ are briefly discussed.
We present a simple technique using a cavity-based resonance spectrometer to quantify the anti-damping torque due to the spin Hall effect. Modification of ferromagnetic resonance is observed as a function of small DC current in sub-mm-wide strips of bilayers, consisting of magnetically soft FeGaB and strong spin-Hall metal Ta. From the detected current-induced linewidth change, we obtain an effective spin Hall angle of 0.08-0.09 independent of the magnetic layer thickness. Our results demonstrate that a sensitive resonance spectrometer can be a general tool to investigate spin Hall effects in …
We study the tunneling current between edge states of quantum Hall liquids across a single long contact region, and predict a resonance at a bias voltage set by the scale of the edge velocity. For typical devices and edge velocities associated with charged modes, this resonance occurs outside the physically accessible bias domain. However, for edge states that are expected to support neutral modes, such as the $ν={2/3}$, and $ν={5/2}$ Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states, the neutral velocity can be orders of magnitude smaller than the charged mode and if so the resonance would be accessible. The…
Coupling between a magnetic impurity and an external bath can give rise to many-body quantum phenomena, including Kondo and Hund's impurity states in metals, and Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in superconductors. While advances have been made in probing the magnetic properties of d-shell impurities on surfaces, the confinement of f orbitals makes them difficult to access directly. Here we show that a 4f driven Kondo resonance can be modulated spatially by asymmetric coupling between a metallic surface and a molecule containing a 4f-like moment. Strong hybridisation of dysprosium double-decker phthalo…
Hybrid lateral superlattices composed of a square array of antidots and a periodic one-dimensional magnetic modulation are prepared in $\mathrm{Ga[Al]As}$ heterostructures. The two-dimensional electron gases exposed to these superlattices are characterized by magnetotransport experiments in vanishing average perpendicular magnetic fields. Despite the absence of closed orbits, the diagonal magnetoresistivity in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic modulation shows pronounced classical resonances. They are located at magnetic fields where snake trajectories exist which are quasi-commensur…
Quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), which generates dissipation-less edge current without external magnetic field, is observed in magnetic-ion doped topological insulators (TIs), such as Cr- and V-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3. The QAHE emerges when the Fermi level is inside the magnetically induced gap around the original Dirac point of the TI surface state. Although the size of gap is reported to be about 50 meV, the observable temperature of QAHE has been limited below 300 mK. We attempt magnetic-Cr modulation doping into topological insulator (Bi,Sb)2Te3 films to increase the observable temperature …
Two promising strategies for achieving efficient control of magnetization in future magnetic memory and non-volatile spin logic devices are spin transfer torque from spin polarized currents and voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA). Spin transfer torque is in widespread development as the write mechanism for next-generation magnetic memory, while VCMA offers the potential of even better energy performance due to smaller Ohmic losses. Here we introduce a 3-terminal magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) device that combines both of these mechanisms to achieve new functionality: gate-voltage-mod…
In this paper we report on the observation of very high and narrow magnetoconductance peaks which we attribute to the transition to quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHFM) state occurring at the edges of the sample. We show that the expected spatial degeneracy of chiral edge channels is spontaneously lifted in agreement with theoretical studies performed within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We indicate also that separated edge currents which flow in parallel, may nevertheless cross at certain points, giving rise to the formation of topological defects or one-dimensional magnetic domains. Furthermore…
