In this paper we report on the observation of very high and narrow magnetoconductance peaks which we attribute to the transition to quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHFM) state occurring at the edges of the sample. We show that the expected spatial degeneracy of chiral edge channels is spontaneously lifted in agreement with theoretical studies performed within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We indicate also that separated edge currents which flow in parallel, may nevertheless cross at certain points, giving rise to the formation of topological defects or one-dimensional magnetic domains. Furthermore, we find that such local crossing of chiral channels can be induced on demand by coupling spin states of a Landau level to different current terminals and applying a DC source-drain voltage.
It is shown that the ideal boundary between a perfectly conducting electrode and electron liquid state acts as a contact whose conductance per unit area is higher than the fundamental Sharvin conductance by a numerical coefficient $2 α$, where $α$ is slightly smaller than unity and depends on the dimensionality of the system. If the boundary has a finite curvature, an additional correction to the boundary conductance appears, which is parametrically small as a product of the curvature by the electron-electron mean free path length. The relation of the normal current density to the voltage betw…
We fabricated a hybrid structure in which cobalt and permalloy micromagnets produce a local in-plane spin-dependent potential barrier for high-mobility electrons at the GaAs/AlGaAs interface. Spin effects are observed in ballistic transport in the tens' millitesla range of the external field, and are attributed to switching between Zeeman and Stern-Gerlach modes -- the former dominating at low electron densities.
We study diffusive transport through ferromagnet - normal metal - ferromagnet (F-N-F) systems, with arbitrary but fixed magnetization directions of the ferromagnetic reservoirs and orientations of a magnetic field applied to the normal metal. For non-collinear configurations, the complex mixing conductance describes the transport of spins non-collinear to the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic reservoirs. When the imaginary part of the mixing conductance is different from zero, the total conductance of the system in the presence of a magnetic field can be asymmetric with respect to time rever…
Quantum coherence of electrons in ferromagnetic metals is difficult to assess experimentally. We report the first measurements of time-dependent universal conductance fluctuations in ferromagnetic metal (Ni$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$) nanostructures as a function of temperature and magnetic field strength and orientation. We find that the cooperon contribution to this quantum correction is suppressed, and that domain wall motion can be a source of coherence-enhanced conductance fluctuations. The fluctuations are more strongly temperature dependent than those in normal metals, hinting that an unusual de…
Mesoscopic transport measurements reveal a large effective phase coherence length in epitaxial GaMnAs ferromagnets, contrary to usual 3d-metal ferromagnets. Universal conductance fluctuations of single nanowires are compared for epilayers with a tailored anisotropy. At large magnetic fields, quantum interferences are due to structural disorder only, and an unusual behavior related to hole-induced ferromagnetism is evidenced, for both quantum interferences and decoherence. At small fields, phase coherence is shown to persist down to zero field, even in presence of magnons, and an additional spi…
We theoretically investigate the effect of the negative differential conductance of a ferromagnetic barrier on the surface of a topological insulator. Due to the changes of the shape and position of the Fermi surfaces in the ferromagnetic barrier, the transport processes can be divided into three kinds: the total, partial and blockade transmission mechanisms. The bias voltage can give rise to the transition of the transport processes from partial to blockade transmission mechanisms, which results in a giant effect of negative differential conductance. With appropriate structural parameters, th…
We report on experiments allowing to set an upper limit on the magnitude of the spin Hall effect and the conductance by edge channels in quantum wells of PbTe embedded between PbEuTe barriers. We reexamine previous data obtained for epitaxial microstructures of n-type PbSe and PbTe, in which pronounced nonlocal effects and reproducible magnetoresistance oscillations were found. Here we show that these effects are brought about by a quasi-periodic network of threading dislocations adjacent to the BaF$_2$ substrate, which give rise to a p-type interfacial layer and an associated parasitic parall…
We investigate the electronic transport properties of a ferromagnet/normal/ferromagnet junction on the surface of a topological insulator with a gate voltage exerted on the normal segment. It is found that the conductance oscillates with the width of normal segment and gate voltage, and the maximum of conductance gradually decreases while the minimum of conductance approaches zero as the width increases. The conductance can be controlled by tuning the gate voltage like a spin field-effect transistor. It is found that the magnetoresistance ratio can be very large, and can also be negative owing…
InAs/GaSb and similar materials systems have generated great interest as a heterojunction for tunnel field effect transistors (TFETs) due to favorable band alignment. However, little is currently understood about how such TFETs are affected by materials defects and nonidealities. We present measurements of the conductance slope for various InAs/GaSb heterojunctions via two-terminal electrical measurements, which removes three-terminal parasitics and enables direct study on the effect of microstructure on tunnelling. Using this, we can predict how subthreshold swings in TFETs can depend on micr…
A theory of spin injection across a ballistic ferromagnet-semiconductor-ferromagnet junction is developed for the Boltzmann regime. Spin injection coefficient $γ$ is suppressed by the Sharvin resistance of the semiconductor $r_N^*=(h/e^2)(π^2/S_N)$, where $S_N$ is the Fermi-surface cross-section. It competes with the diffusion resistances of the ferromagnets $r_F$, and $γ\sim r_F/r_N^*\ll 1$ in the absence of contact barriers. Efficient spin injection can be ensured by contact barriers. Explicit formulae for the junction resistance and the spin-valve effect are presented.
Recently, different experiments on the transport through atomic-sized contacts made of ferromagnetic materials have produced contradictory results. In particular, several groups have reported the observation of half-integer conductance quantization, which requires having full spin polarization and perfectly conducting channels. Motivated by these surprising results, we have studied theoretically the conductance of ideal atomic contact geometries of the ferromagnetic 3d materials Fe, Co, and Ni using a realistic tight-binding model. Our analysis shows that in the absence of magnetic domains, th…
Giant oscillations of the density of electronic states and the differential conductance of a superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor structure are predicted for the case when the exchange energy, $I_0$, due to the interaction between the electron spin and the spontaneous moment of the ferromagnet is smaller than the superconductor energy gap, $Δ$. The effect is due to the extremely large degeneration of the energy level $ε= I_0$ when the superconductor phase difference $ϕ$ is close to odd multiple of $π$ ($ε$ is the electron energy measured from the Fermi-energy). This quantum interference e…
The conductance of a ferromagnetic particle depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization with respect to the direction of current flow. This phenomenon is known as "anisotropic magnetoresistance". Quantum interference leads to an additional, random dependence of the conductance on the magnetization direction. These "anisotropic magnetoresistance fluctuations" are caused by spin-orbit scattering, which couples the electron motion to the exchange field in the ferromagnet. We report a calculation of the dependence of the conductance autocorrelation function on the rotation angle of th…
We studied phase coherent phenomena in mesoscopic Permalloy samples by exploring low temperature transport. Both, differential conductance as a function of bias voltage and magnetoconductance of individual wires display conductance fluctuations. Analysis of these fluctuations yields a phase coherence length of $\sim250$ nm at 25 mK as well as a $1/\sqrt{T}$ temperature dependence. To suppress conductance fluctuations by ensemble averaging we investigated low temperature transport in wire arrays and extended Permalloy films. In these samples we have measured conductance corrections which stem f…
The accurate and proper form of electron-hole excitations and corresponding Dirac-like spinors of monolayer molybdenum disulfide superconductor are exactly obtained. Andreev reflection and resulting subgap conductance in a $MoS_2$-based ferromagnetic superconducting (F/S) junction is accurately investigated in terms of dynamical characteristics of system. Due to spin-splitting energy gap in the valence band and nondegenerate $K$ and $K'$ valleys, the ferromagnetic exchange energy $σh$ can cause a distinct behavior of Andreev process between spin-up and spin-down charge carriers belonging to di…
We theoretically study the electron transport properties in a ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic tunnel junction, which is deposited on the top of a topological surface. The conductance at the parallel (\textbf{P}) configuration can be much bigger than that at the antiparallel (\textbf{AP}) configuration. Compared \textbf{P} with \textbf{AP} configuration, there exists a shift of phase which can be tuned by gate voltage. We find that the exchange field weakly affects the conductance of carriers for \textbf{P} configuration but can dramatically suppress the conductance of carriers for \textbf{A…
The paper concerns experimental verification of the magnitude of imaginary part of spin mixing conductance in bilayers comprising heavy metals. We present results of broadband ferromagnetic resonance studies on heterostructures consisting of Finemet thin films covered by Pt and Ta wedge layers with the aim to observe spin pumping effects and to evaluate both the real and imaginary parts of the spin mixing conductance. The experimental results are analyzed in the framework of a recent microscopic theory which allows us to estimate the value of the interfacial spin-orbit interaction and confirm …

We theoretically analyzed the Andreev reflection in ferromagnetic metal/nonmagnetic metal/superconductor double junctions with special attention to the electron interference effect in the nonmagnetic metal layer. We showed that the conductance oscillates as a function of the bias voltage due to the geometrical resonance. We found that the exchange field, and therefore the spin polarization of the ferromagnetic metal can be determined from the period of the conductance oscillation, which is proportional to the square root of the exchange field.
The spin mixing conductance (SMC) is a key quantity determining efficiency of spin transport across interfaces. Thus, knowledge of its precise value is required for accurate measurement of parameters quantifying numerous effects in spintronics, such as spin-orbit torque, spin Hall magnetoresistance, spin Hall effect and spin pumping. However, the standard expression for SMC, provided by the scattering theory in terms of the reflection probability amplitudes, is inapplicable when strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is present directly at the interface. This is the precisely the case of topological…
Thermoelectric effects through a serial double quantum dot system weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads are analyzed. Formal expressions of electrical conductance, thermal conductance, and thermal coefficient are obtained by means of Hubbard operators. The results show that although the thermopower is independent of the polarization of the leads, the figure of merit is reduced by an increase of polarization. The influences of temperature and interdot tunneling on the figure of merit are also investigated, and it is observed that increase of the interdot tunneling strength results in reduction …
A theory of spin-transport in hybrid normal metal - ferromagnetic electronic circuits is developed, taking into account non-collinear spin-accumulation. Spin-transport through resistive elements is described by 4 conductance parameters. Microscopic expression for these conductances are derived in terms of scattering matrices and explicitly calculated for simple models. The circuit theory is applied to 2-terminal and 3-terminal devices attached to ferromagnetic reservoirs.
Quantum interference phenomena in the conductivity of mesoscopic ferromagnets are considered, particularly with regard to the effects of geometric phases acquired by electrons propagating through regions of spatially varying magnetization (due, e.g., to magnetic domain walls). Weak localization and electron-electron interaction quantum corrections to the conductivity and universal conductance fluctuations are discussed. Experiments are proposed for multiply-connected geometries that should reveal conductance oscillations with variations of the profile of the magnetization.
We study the transport properties of a graphene ferromagnet-insulator superconductor (FIS) junction within the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism by solving spin-polarized Dirac-Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation. We find that the retro and specular Andreev reflections in the graphene FIS junction are drastically modified in the presence of exchange interaction and that the spin-polarization ($P_T$) of tunneling current can be tuned from the positive to negative value by bias voltage ($V$). In the thin-barrier limit, the conductance $G$ of a graphene FIS junction oscillates as a function of barrier…
The zero bias conductance of quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic leads is investigated. In the strong coupling regime, it is found that the conductance is a non-monotonic function of the angle between the magnetisation directions in the two contacts. This behaviour is an effect of the presence of the leads which induces an angle dependent spin split of the quantum dot states, and spin flip transitions between the quantum dot states whenever the magnetisation directions of the leads are non-collinear which enhances the current density at the chemical potential. In the weak coupling regime, th…
We investigate the transport properties of a ferromagnet-superconductor interface within the framework of a modified three-dimensional Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism. In particular, we propose that charge inhomogeneity forms via two unique transport mechanisms, namely, evanescent Andreev reflection and evanescent quasiparticle transmission. Furthermore, we take into account the influence of charge inhomogeneity on the interfacial barrier potential and calculate the conductance as a function of bias voltage. Point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectra often show dip structures, large ze…
Double tunneling junctions of ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet electrodes (FSF) show a jump in the conductance when a parallel magnetic field reverses the magnetization of one of the ferromagnetic electrodes. This change is generally attributed to the spin-valve effect or to pair breaking in the superconductor because of spin accumulation. In this paper it is shown that the Meservey-Tedrov effect causes a similar change in the conductance since the magnetic field changes the energy spectrum of the quasi-particles in the superconductor. A reversal of the bias reverses the sign in the cond…
We study the conductance and current noise of a superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) single channel Quantum Point Contact (QPC) as a function of the QPC bias voltage, using a scattering approach. We show that the Spin-Dependence of Interfacial Phase Shifts (SDIPS) acquired by electrons upon scattering by the QPC can strongly modify these signals. For a weakly transparent contact, the SDIPS induces sub-gap resonances in the conductance and differential Fano factor curves of the QPC. For high transparencies, these resonances are smoothed, but the shape of the signals remain extremely sensitive to th…
The possibility of quantum oscillations of the tunnel conductance and magnetoresistance induced by spin-wave excitations in a ferromagnet-ferromagnet-ferromagnet double barrier tunnel junction, when the magnetizations of the two side ferromagnets are aligned antiparallel to that of the middle ferromagnet, is investigated in a self-consistent manner by means of Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function method. It has been found that owing to the s-d exchange interactions between conduction electrons and the spin density induced by spin accumulation in the middle ferromagnet, the differential conduc…
We study thermoelectric effects in Kondo correlated quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes by calculating conductance, thermopower and thermal conductance in the Kondo regime. We also study the effect of the asymmetry in the coupling to the leads, which has important consequences for anti-parallel magnetization configuration. We discuss the thermoelectric figure of merit, tunnel magnetoresistance and violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in this system. The results agree with recently measured thermopower of the quantum dot defined in a two dimensional electron gas.
Equilibrium transport properties of a single-level quantum dot tunnel-coupled to ferromagnetic leads and exchange-coupled to a side nonmagnetic reservoir are analyzed theoretically in the Kondo regime. The equilibrium spectral functions and conductance through the dot are calculated using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. It is shown that in the antiparallel magnetic configuration, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition with increasing exchange coupling $J$, where the conductance drops from its maximum value to zero. In the parallel configuration, on the other hand, th…
Electronic transport in a graphene-based ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic junction is investigated by means of Landauer-Büttiker formulism and the nonequilibrium Green's function technique. For the zigzag edge case, the results show that the conductance is always larger than $e^{2}/h$ for the parallel configuration of lead magnetizations, but for the antiparallel configuration the conductance becomes zero because of the band-selective rule. So a magnetoresistance (MR) plateau emerges with the value 100% when the Fermi energy is located around the Dirac point. Besides, choosing narrower graph…
We present the element-specific and time resolved visualization of uniform ferromagnetic resonance excitations of a Permalloy (Py) disk - Cobalt (Co) stripe bilayer microstructure. The transverse high frequency component of the resonantly excited magnetization is sampled in the ps regime by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM- FMR) recording snapshots of the local magnetization precession of Py and Co with nanometer spatial resolution. The approach allows us to individually image the resonant dynamic response of each element, and we f…
We calculate the conductance of a superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) mesoscopic structure in the dirty limit. First we assume that the ferromagnet exhibits a homogeneous magnetization and consider the case that the penetration of the condensate into the F wire is negligible and the case in which the proximity effect is taken into account. It is shown that if the exchange field is large enough, the conductance below the critical temperature $T_C$, is always smaller than the conductance in the normal state. At last, we calculate the conductance for a F/S structure with a local inhomogeneity of the…
The Andreev reflection of narrow ferromagnet/superconductor point contacts is theoretically studied. We show that the conductance quantization depends on whether the contact region is superconducting or ferromagnetic as well as on the strength of the exchange field in the ferromagnet. The Andreev reflection of the ferromagnetic contact is more suppressed than that of the superconducting contact. We also show that the conductance-voltage curve has a bump at zero bias-voltage if there is no interfacial-scattering. On the contrary, the conductance-voltage curve shows a dip if the system has an in…
We present measurements of tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) in single-wall carbon nanotubes attached to ferromagnetic contacts in the Coulomb blockade regime. Strong variations of the TMR with gate voltage over a range of four conductance resonances, including a peculiar double-dip signature, are observed. The data is compared to calculations in the "dressed second order" (DSO) framework. In this non-perturbative theory, conductance peak positions and linewidths are affected by charge fluctuations incorporating the properties of the carbon nanotube quantum dot and the ferromagnetic leads. Th…
Advanced vector imaging techniques provide us with 3D maps of magnetization fields in which topological concepts can be directly applied to describe real-space experimental textures in non-ideal geometries. Here, the 3D magnetization of a low symmetry permalloy microstructure is obtained by X-ray vector magnetic tomography and analysed in detail in terms of topological charges and emergent fields. A central asymmetric domain wall with a complex 3D structure is observed in which magnetization chirality transitions are mediated by Bloch points arranged in several dipoles and a triplet. The ideal…
We study the electric and thermoelectric transport properties of correlated quantum dots coupled to two ferromagnetic leads and one superconducting electrode. Transport through such hybrid devices depends on the interplay of ferromagnetic-contact induced exchange field, superconducting proximity effect and correlations leading to the Kondo effect. We consider the limit of large superconducting gap. The system can be then modeled by an effective Hamiltonian with a particle-non-conserving term describing the creation and annihilation of Cooper pairs. By means of the full density-matrix numerical…
The spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) allows to investigate the magnetic textures of magnetically ordered insulators in heterostructures with normal metals by magnetotransport experiments. We here report the observation of the SMR in in-situ prepared ferromagnetic EuO/W thin film bilayers with magnetically and chemically well-defined interfaces. We characterize the magnetoresistance effects utilizing angle-dependent and field-dependent magnetotransport measurements as a function of temperature. Applying the established SMR model, we derive and quantify the real and imaginary parts of the compl…
Two-dimensional magnets are promising for nanoscale spintronic applications. Currently, most available candidates are based on $3d$ transition metal compounds, with hexagonal or honeycomb lattice geometry. Here, a GdCl$_3$ monolayer with $4f$ moments is theoretically studied, which can be exfoliated from its existing bulk. Its orthorhombic structure and hendecahedral ion cages are unique in two-dimensional. Furthermore, a significant structural reconstruction is caused by the implantation of Li atoms into its interstitial position, which also lead to ferromagnetism via a double-exchange-like p…
The conductance G of a quantum dot with single-mode ballistic point contacts depends sensitively on external parameters X, such as gate voltage and magnetic field. We calculate the joint distribution of G and dG/dX by relating it to the distribution of the Wigner-Smith time-delay matrix of a chaotic system. The distribution of dG/dX has a singularity at zero and algebraic tails. While G and dG/dX are correlated, the ratio of dG/dX and $\sqrt{G(1-G)}$ is independent of G. Coulomb interactions change the distribution of dG/dX, by inducing a transition from the grand-canonical to the canonical en…
As a novel function of ferromagnet (FM)/spacer/FM junctions, we theoretically investigate multiple-valued (or multi-level) cell property, which is in principle realized by sensing conductances of four states recorded with magnetization configurations of two FMs; (up,up), (up,down), (down,up), (down, down). In order to sense all the states, 4-valued conductances corresponding to the respective states are necessary. We previously proposed that 4-valued conductances are obtained in FM1/spin-polarized spacer (SPS)/FM2 junctions, where FM1 and FM2 have different spin polarizations, and the spacer de…
In this paper, we investigate the electronic transport properties of a quantum dot (QD) connected to two ferromagnetic leads and one superconductor lead in the Kondo regime by means of the finite-$U$ slave boson mean field approach and nonequilibrium Green function technique. In this three-terminal hybrid nano-device, we will focus our attention on the joint effects of the Konod correlation, superconducting proximity pairing, and spin polarization of leads. It is found that: the superconducting proximity effect will suppress the linear local conductance (LLC) stemming from the weakened Kondo p…
Using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique, we study the current and shot noise spectroscopy of a single interacting quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnetic leads with different polarizations. The polarizations of leads can be both parallel and antiparallel alignments. General formulas of current and shot noise are obtained, which can be applied in both the parallel and antiparallel alignment cases. We show that for large polarization value, the differential conductance and shot noise are completely diferent for spin up and spin down configurations in the parallel alignment cas…
We theoretically investigate inelastic transport through anisotropic magnetic molecules weakly coupled to one ferromagnetic and one nonmagnetic lead. We find that the current is suppressed over wide voltage ranges due to spin blockade. In this system, spin blockade is associated with successive spin flips of the molecular spins and depends on the anisotropy energy barrier. This leads to the appearance of a window of bias voltages between the Coulomb blockade and spin blockade regimes where the current is large and to negative differential conductance at low temperatures. Remarkably, negative d…
The effective spin-mixing conductance (G_eff) of a heavy metal/ferromagnet (HM/FM) interface characterizes the efficiency of the interfacial spin transport.Accurately determining G_eff is critical to the quantitative understanding of measurements of direct and inverse spin Hall effects. G_eff is typically ascertained from the inverse dependence of magnetic damping on the FM thickness under the assumption that spin pumping is the dominant mechanism affecting this dependence. Here we report that, this assumption fails badly in many in-plane magnetized prototypical HM/FM systems in the nm-scale th…
We propose a scheme where transport measurements of charge current and its noise can be used to determine the spin Hall conductance in a four-terminal setup. Starting from the scattering formalism we express the spin current and spin Hall conductance in terms of spin-dependent transmission coefficients. These coefficients are then expressed in terms of charge current and noise. We use the scheme to characterize the spin injection efficiency of a ferromagnetic/semiconductor interface.
The linear response conductance coefficients are calculated in the scattering approach at finite frequency, damping and magnetic field for a microstructure in which the reservoirs are modeled as quantum wire leads of infinite length but finite width. Independently of frequency, inelastic scattering causes subbands with large group velocity to contribute more strongly to the conductance than channels of comparable transmission but slower propagation. At finite frequency and magnetic fields, additional correction terms appear, some of which are sensitive to the phase of the S matrix.
We study Andreev reflection (AR) tunneling through a quantum dot (QD) connected to a ferromagnet and a superconductor, in which the intradot spin-flip interaction is included. By using the nonequibrium-Green-function method, the formula of the linear AR conductance is derived at zero temperature. It is found that competition between the intradot spin-flip scattering and the tunneling coupling to the leads dominantes resonant behaviours of the AR conductance versus the gate voltage.A weak spin-flip scattering leads to a single peak resonance. However, with the spin-flip scattering strength incre…
At low temperatures, the transport through a superconductor-ferromagnet tunnel interface is due to tunneling of electrons in pairs. Exchange field of a monodomain ferromagnet aligns electron spins and suppresses the two electron tunneling. The presence of the domain walls at the SF interface strongly enhances the subgap current. The Andreev conductance is proven to be proportional to the total length of domain walls at the SF interface.
We investigate charge transport in two-dimensional ferromagnet/feromagnet junction on a topological insulator. The conductance across the interface depends sensitively on the directions of the magnetizations of the two ferromagnets, showing anomalous behaviors compared with the conventional spin-valve. It is found that the conductance depends strongly on the in-plane direction of the magnetization. Moreover, in sharp contrast to the conventional magnetoresistance effect, in the p-n junction, the conductance at the parallel configuration is much smaller than that at the antiparallel configurati…
We investigate the chiral edge states in the two-dimensional ferromagntic kagomé lattice with spin anisotropies included. The system is periodic in the $x$ direction but has two edges in the $y$ direction. The Harper equation for solving the energies of edge states is derived. We find that there are two edge states in each bulk energy gap, corresponding to two zero points of the Bloch function on the complex-energy Riemann surface (RS). The edge-state energy loops parametrized by the momentum $k_{x}$ cross the holes of the RS. When the Fermi energy lies in the bulk energy gap, the quantized Ha…
With the goal to elucidate the nature of spin-dependent electronic transport in ferromagnetic atomic contacts, we present here a combined experimental and theoretical study of the conductance and shot noise of metallic atomic contacts made of the 3d ferromagnetic materials Fe, Co, and Ni. For comparison, we also present the corresponding results for the noble metal Cu. Conductance and shot noise measurements, performed using a low-temperature break junction setup, show that in these ferromagnetic nanowires: (i) there is no conductance quantization of any kind, (ii) transport is dominated by se…
Giant oscillations of the conductance of a superconductor - ferromagnet - superconductor Andreev interferometer are predicted. The effect is due to the resonant transmission of normal electrons through Andreev levels when the voltage $V$ applied to the ferromagnet is close to $2h_0/e$ ($h_0$ is the spin-dependant part of the electron energy). The effect of bias voltage and phase difference between the superconductors on the current and the differential conductance is presented. These efects allow a direct spectroscopy of Andreev levels in the ferromagnet.
We study spin-dependent electronic transport across ferromagnet/superconductor ballistic junctions modeled using tight-binding Hamiltonians with s, p and d orbitals and material-specific parameters. We show that by accurately modeling the band structure of the bulk materials, one can reproduce the measured differential conductance of Cu/Pb nanocontacts. In contrast the differential conductance of Co/Pb contacts can only be reproduced if an enhanced magnetic moment is present at the interface.
We study a generic two-dimensional hopping model on a honeycomb lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling, without the requirement that the half-filled lattice be a Topological Insulator. For quarter-(or three-quarter) filling, we show that a state with a quantized Hall conductance generically arises in the presence of a Zeeman field of sufficient strength. We discuss the influence of Hubbard interactions and argue that spontaneous ferromagnetism (which breaks time-reversal) will occur, leading to a quantized anomalous Hall effect.
Crossed conductance in hybrid Ferromagnet / Superconductor / Ferromagnet (FSF) structures results from the competition between normal transmission and Andreev reflection channels. Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) and elastic cotunneling (EC) between the ferromagnets are dressed by local Andreev reflections, which play an important role for transparent enough interfaces and intermediate spin polarizations. This modifies the simple result previously obtained at lowest order, and can explain the sign of the crossed resistances in a recent experiment [D. Beckmann {\sl et al.}, cond-mat/0404360]. T…
