We present dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in the simplest pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHF) of an InSb two-dimensional electron gas with a large g factor using tilted magnetic fields. The DNP-induced amplitude change of a resistance spike of the QHF at large current enables observation of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance of the high nuclear spin isotope 115In with nine quadrupole splittings. Our results demonstrate the importance of domain structures in the DNP process. The nuclear spin relaxation time T1 in this QHF was relatively short (~ 120 s), and almost temperature independent.
The spectral functions of the pseudospin correlation functions in the bilayer quantum Hall system at ν=1 are investigated numerically, where the pseudospin describes the layer degrees of freedom. In the pseudospin-ferromagnetic phase, the lowest-energy excitation branch is closely connected with the ground state through the fluctuations of pseudospin S_y and S_z, and it plays a significant role on the tunneling properties in this system. For the system with very small tunneling amplitude and layer separation smaller than the critical one, the system-size dependence of calculated spectral funct…
The parallel field of a full spin polarization of the electron gas in a \Gamma8 conduction band of the HgTe quantum well was obtained from the magnetoresistance by three different ways in a zero and quasi-classical range of perpendicular field component Bper. In the quantum Hall range of Bper the spin polarization manifests in anticrossings of magnetic levels, which were found to strongly nonmonotonously depend on Bper.
We study spin-valley and lattice-pseudo spin currents in a dual ferromagnetic-gated silicene-based junction. Silicene has buckled atomic structure which allows us to take sublattice-dependent ferromagnetism into account in the investigation. One of the study results show that transmission at the junctions exhibits anisotropic property only in anti-parallel cases. Interestingly, the studied junctions can be switched from a pure spin-polarizer to a pure valley-polarizer by reversing directions of exchange fields in the parallel junctions. The perfect control of spin-valley currents can be done o…
The Hartree-Fock paradigm of bilayer quantum Hall states with finite tunneling at filling factor $ν$=1 has full pseudospin ferromagnetic order with all the electrons in the lowest symmetric Landau level. Inelastic light scattering measurements of low energy spin excitations reveal major departures from the paradigm at relatively large tunneling gaps. The results indicate the emergence of a novel correlated quantum Hall state at $ν$=1 characterized by reduced pseudospin order. Marked anomalies occur in spin excitations when pseudospin polarization collapses by application of in-plane magnetic f…
We investigate theoretically spin and orbital pseudospin magnetic properties of a molecular orbital in parabolic and elliptic double quantum dots (DQDs). In our many body calculation we include intra- and inter-dot electron-electron interactions, in addition to the intradot exchange interaction of `p' orbitals. We find for parabolic DQDs that, except for the half or completely filled molecular orbital, spins in different dots are ferromagnetically coupled while orbital pseudospins are antiferromagnetically coupled. For elliptic DQDs spins and pseudospins are either ferromagnetically or antifer…
We propose that a pseudospin ferromagnetic (i.e inter-wire coherent) state can exist in a system of two parallel wires of finite width in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. This novel quantum many-body state appears when the inter wire distance decreases below a certain critical value which depends on the magnetic field. We determine the phase boundary of the ferromagnetic phase by analyzing the softening of the spin-mode velocity using the bosonization approach. We also discuss signatures of this state in tunneling and Coulomb drag experiments.
We analyze bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets, whose underlying symmetry group is SU(4). Spin-pseudospin coherence develops spontaneously when the total electron density is low enough. Quasiparticles are CP^3 skyrmions. One skyrmion induces charge modulations on both of the two layers. At the filling factor$ν=2/m$ one elementary excitation consists of a pair of skyrmions and its charge is $2e/m$. Recent experimental data due to Sawada et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 4534 (1998)] support this conclusion.
The chiral two-dimensional electron gas in Landau levels $\left\vert N\right\vert >0$ of a Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer has a valley-pseudospin Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetic behavior at odd filling factors $ν_{N}=1,3$ of these fourfold degenerate states. At zero interlayer electrical bias, the ground state at these fillings is spin polarized and electrons occupy one valley or the other while a finite electrical bias produces a series of valley pseudospin-flip transitions. In this work, we extend the Ising behavior to chirally-stacked multilayer graphene and discuss the hysteretic behavio…
When two Landau levels are brought to a close coincidence between them and with the chemical potential in the Integer Quantum Hall regime, the two Landau levels can just cross or collapse while the external or pseudospin field that induces the alignment changes. In this work, all possible crossings are analyzed theoretically for the particular case of semiconductor trilayer systems, using a variational Hartree-Fock approximation. The model includes tunneling between neighboring layers, bias, intra-layer and inter-layer Coulomb interaction among the electrons. We have found that the general pse…
Broken symmetry ground states with uniform electron density are common in quantum Hall systems when two Landau levels simultaneously approach the chemical potential at integer filling factor $ν$. The close analogy between these two-dimensional electron system states and conventional itinerant electron ferromagnets can be emphasized by using a pseudospin label to distinguish the two Landau levels. As in conventional ferromagnets, the evolution of the system's state as external field parameters are varied is expected to be sensitive to the dependence of ground state energy on pseudospin orientat…
In mean-field-theory bilayer graphene's massive Dirac fermion model has a family of broken inversion symmetry ground states with charge gaps and flavor dependent spontaneous inter layer charge transfers. We use a lattice Hartree-Fock model to explore some of the physics which controls whether or not this type of broken symmetry state, which can be viewed as a pseudospin ferromagnet, occurs in nature. We find that inversion symmetry is still broken in the lattice model and estimate that transferred areal densities are $\sim 10^{-5}$ electrons per carbon atom, that the associated energy gaps are…
Using exact diagonalization of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in the torus geometry, we show that there is a new long-range interlayer phase coherence due to spontaneous pseudospin spiral order at interlayer distances larger than the critical value at which the pseudospin ferromagnetic order is destroyed. We emphasize the distinction between the interlayer phase coherence and the pseudospin ferromagnetic order.
We investigate the unusual features of the quantum transport in gapped monolayer graphene, which is in a pseudospin symmetry-broken state with a net perpendicular pseudomagnetization. Using these pseudoferromagnets (PFs), we propose a perfect pseudospin valve effect that can be used for realizing pseudospintronics in monolayer graphene. The peculiarity of the associated effects of pseudo spin injection and pseudo spin accumulation are also studied. We further demonstrate the determining effect of the sublattice pseudospin degree of freedom on Andreev reflection and the associated proximity eff…
The pseudospin degree of freedom in a semiconductor bilayer gives rise to a collective mode analogous to the ferromagnetic resonance mode of a ferromagnet. We present a theory of the dependence of the energy and the damping of this mode on layer separation $d$. Based on these results, we discuss the possibility of realizing transport-current driven pseudospin-transfer oscillators in semiconductors.
Resistively Detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (RD-NMR) has been used to investigate a two-subband electron system in a regime where quantum Hall pseudo-spin ferromagnetic (QHPF) states are prominently developed. It reveals that the easy-axis QHPF state around the total filling factor $ν=4 $ can be detected by the RD-NMR measurement. Approaching one of the Landau level (LL) crossing points, the RD-NMR signal strength and the nuclear spin relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ enhance significantly, a signature of low energy spin excitations. However, the RD-NMR signal at another identical LL crossing poin…
The two-dimensional electron gas in a bilayer graphene in the Bernal stacking supports a variety of uniform broken-symmetry ground states in Landau level N=0 at integer filling factors $ν\in [-3,4].$ When an electric potential difference (or bias) is applied between the layers at filling factors $ν=-1,3$, the ground state evolves from an interlayer coherent state at small bias to a state with orbital coherence at higher bias where \textit{electric} dipoles associated with the orbital pseudospins order spontaneously in the plane of the layers. In this paper, we show that by further increasing t…
We present a microscopic theory of zero-temperature order parameter and pseudospin stiffness reduction due to quantum fluctuations in the ground state of double-layer quantum Hall ferromagnets. Collective excitations in this systems are properly described only when interactions in both direct and exchange particle-hole channels are included. We employ a functional integral approach which is able to account for both, and comment on its relation to diagrammatic perturbation theory. We also discuss its relation to Gaussian fluctuation approximations based on Hubbard-Stratonovich-transformation re…
We investigate the charge and spin structures associated with arbitrary smooth polarization textures in Ising (integer) quantum Hall ferromagnets. We consider the case where the two polarizations (denoted "pseudospin" up and down) correspond to states with opposite physical spin and different Landau level indices, $n\uparrow$ and $m\downarrow$. We derive analytic expressions for the charge and spin densities, as functions of the underlying pseudospin texture, and use these results to investigate different types of linear domain walls, both analytically and numerically. We find that any smooth …
We investigate a spin-full double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to the leads in a pseudospin valve configuration. The interplay of interaction and interference produces in the stability diagram a rich variety of resonances, modulated by the system parameters. In presence of ferromagnetic leads and pseudospin anisotropy, those resonances split, turn into dips and acquire a Fano shape thus revealing a synthetic spin-orbit coupling induced on the DQD. A set of rate equations derived for a minimal model captures those features. The model accurately matches the numerical results obtained for the full s…
Monolayer graphene with an energy gap presents a pseudospin symmetry broken ferromagnet with a perpendicular pseudomagnetization whose direction is switched by altering the type of doping between n and p. We demonstrate an electrical current switching effect in pseudospin version of a spin valve in which two pseudoferromagnetic regions are contacted through a normal graphene region. The proposed structure exhibits a pseudomagnetoresistance, defined as the relative difference of resistances of parallel and antiparallel alignments of the pseudomagnetizations, which can be tuned to unity. This pe…
In a quantizing magnetic field, the chiral two-dimensional electron gas in Landau level $N=0$ of bilayer graphene goes through a series of phase transitions at integer filling factors $ν\in \left[ -3,3\right] $ when the strength of an electric field applied perpendicularly to the layers is increased. At filling factor $ν=3,$ the electron gas can described by a simple two-level system where layer and spin degrees of freedom are frozen. The gas then behaves as an orbital quantum Hall ferromagnet. A Coulomb-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term in the orbital pseudospin Hamiltonian is responsible fo…
Using transport measurements, we investigate multicomponent quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnetism in dual-gated rhombohedral trilayer graphene (r-TLG), in which the real spin, orbital pseudospin and layer pseudospins of the lowest Landau level form spontaneous ordering. We observe intermediate quantum Hall plateaus, indicating a complete lifting of the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level (LL) in the hole-doped regime. In charge neutral r-TLG, the orbital degeneracy is broken first, and the layer degeneracy is broken last and only the in presence of an interlayer potential U. In the phase space of…
In a Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer, an electronic state in Landau level $% N=0$ is described by its guiding-center index $X$ (in the Landau gauge) and by its valley, spin, and orbital indices $ξ=\pm K,σ=\pm 1,$ and $% n=0,1.$ When Coulomb interaction is taken into account, the chiral two-dimensional electron gas (C2DEG) in this system can support a variety of quantum Hall ferromagnetic (QHF)\ ground states where the spins and/or valley pseudospins and/or orbital pseudospins collectively align in space. In this work, we give a comprehensive account of the phase diagram of the C2DEG at integer…
Spin selective nature of spin-filter tunnel junctions can be integrated with conventional metallic ferromagnets to regulate spin polarized quasiparticles in superconducting devices. We report fabrication of pseudo spin-valve device made with a bilayer of nitride spin-filter tunnel barrier (DyN or GdN) and a transition metal ferromagnet (Co and Gd). We show resistance switching in these devices corresponding to parallel and antiparallel configuration of their mutual magnetization direction. With optimal deposition process partial nitridation of the Co layer can be achieved. The magnetically dea…
Strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene grown on tungsten disulfide (WS2) has been recently observed, leading to energy gap opening by SOI. Energy gap in graphene may also be induced by sublattice symmetry breaking (SSB) where energy level in A-sublattice is not equal to that in B-sublattice. SSB-gap may be produced by growing graphene on hexagonal boron nitride or silicon carbide. In this work, we investigate transport property in a SOI/SSB/SOI gapped graphene junction, focusing the effect of interplay of SOI and SSB. We find that, lattice-pseudospin polarization (L-PSP) can be contro…
We revisit the physics of electron gas bilayers in the quantum Hall regime [Nature, 432 (2004) 691; Science, 305 (2004) 950], where transport and tunneling measurements provided evidence of a superfluid phase being present in the system. Previously, this behavior was explained by the possible formation of a BEC of excitons in the half-filled electron bilayers, where empty states play the role of holes. We discuss the fundamental difficulties with this scenario, and propose an alternative approach based on a treatment of the system as a pseudospin magnet. We show that the experimentally observe…
We study the quantum Hall effect in graphene at filling factors ν= 0 and ν= \pm, concentrating on the quantum Hall ferromagnetic regime, within a non-perturbative bosonization formalism. We start by developing a bosonization scheme for electrons with two discrete degrees of freedom (spin-1/2 and pseudospin-1/2) restricted to the lowest Landau level. Three distinct phases are considered, namely the so-called spin-pseudospin, spin, and pseudospin phases. The first corresponds to a quarter-filled (ν=-1) while the others to a half-filled (ν= 0) lowest Landau level. In each case, we show that the e…
At total filling factor $ν=1$ quantum Hall bilayers can have an ordered ground state with spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. The ordered state is signaled experimentally by dramatically enhanced interlayer tunnel conductances at low bias voltages; at larger bias voltages inter-layer currents are similar to those of the disordered state. We associate this change in behavior with the existence of a critical current beyond which static inter-layer phase differences cannot be maintained, and examine the dependence of this critical current on sample geometry, phase stiffness, and the coherent …
We show that the surface states of pristine 3D topological insulators (TIs) are analogs of ferromagnetic half metals due to complete polarization of an emergent momentum independent pseudospin (SU(2)) degree of freedom on the surface. To put this claim on firm footing, we present results for TI surfaces perpendicular to the crystal growth axis, which clearly show that the tunneling conductance between two such TI surfaces of the same TI material is dominated by this half metallic behavior leading to physics reminiscent of a spin-valve. Further using the generalized tunnel magnetoresistance der…
The two-dimensional electron gas in a bilayer quantum Hall system can sustain an interlayer coherence at filling factor nu=1 even in the absence of tunneling between the layers. This system has low-energy charged excitations which may carry textures in real spin or pseudospin. Away from filling factor nu =1 a finite density of these is present in the ground state of the 2DEG and forms a crystal. Depending on the relative size of the various energy scales, such as tunneling (Delta_SAS), Zeeman coupling (Delta_Z) or electrical bias (Delta_b), these textured crystal states can involve spin, pseud…
The tilting angular dependence of the energy gap was measured in the bilayer quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling $ν=1$ by changing the density imbalance between the two layers. The observed gap behavior shows a continuous transformation from the bilayer balanced density state to the monolayer state. Even a sample with 33 K tunneling gap shows the same activation energy anomaly reported by Murphy {\it et al.}. We discuss a possible relation between our experimental results and the quantum Hall ferromagnet of spins and pseudospins.
Magnetotransport properties are investigated for a high mobility Si two dimensional electron systems in the vicinity of a Landau level crossing point. At low temperatures, the resistance peak having a strong anisotropy shows large hysteresis which is attributed to Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetism. The peak is split into two peaks in the paramagnetic regime. A mean field calculation for the peak positions indicates that electron scattering is strong when the pseudospin is partially polarized. We also study the current-voltage characteristics which exhibit a wide voltage plateau.
We discuss charged topological spin textures in quantum Hall ferromagnets in which the electrons carry a pseudospin as well as the usual spin degree of freedom, as is the case in bilayer GaAs or monolayer graphene samples. We develop a theory which treats spin and pseudospin on a manifestly equal footing, which may also be of help in visualizing the relevant spin textures. We in particular consider the entanglement of spin and pseudospin in the presence of realistic anisotropies. An entanglement operator is introduced which generates families of degenerate Skyrmions with differing entanglement…
We study the competition between the long-range Coulomb interaction, disorder scattering, and lattice effects in the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) in graphene. By direct transport calculations, both $ν=1$ and $ν=3$ IQHE states are revealed in the lowest two Dirac Landau levels. However, the critical disorder strength above which the $ν=3$ IQHE is destroyed is much smaller than that for the $ν=1$ IQHE, which may explain the absence of a $ν=3$ plateau in recent experiments. While the excitation spectrum in the IQHE phase is gapless within numerical finite-size analysis, we do find and deter…
We carry out a numerical study of the quantum Hall ferromagnetism in a two-subband system using a set of experimental parameters in a recently experiment [X. C. Zhang, I. Martin, and H. W. Jiang, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{74}, 073301 (2006)]. Employing the self-consistence local density approximation for growth direction wave function and the Hartree-Fock theory for the pseudospin anisotropy energy, we are able to account for the easy-axis and easy-plane quantum Hall ferromagnetism observed at total filling factor $ν= 3$ and $ν= 4$, respectively. Our study provides some insight of how the anisotrop…
A "squeezed-vacuum" state considered in quantum optics is shown to be realized in the ground-state wavefunction for the bilayer quantum Hall system at the total Landau level filling of $ν=1/m$ (m: odd integer). This is derived in the boson approximation, where a particle-hole pair creation across the symmetric-antisymmetric gap, $Δ_{SAS}$, is regarded as a boson. In terms of the pseudospin describing the layers, the state is a spin-squeezed state, where the degree of squeezing is controlled by the layer separation and $Δ_{SAS}$. An exciton condensation, which amounts to a rotated spin-squeezed…
The integration of magnetic material with semiconductors has been fertile ground for fundamental science as well as of great practical interest toward the seamless integration of information processing and storage. Here we create van der Waals heterostructures formed by an ultrathin ferromagnetic semiconductor CrI3 and a monolayer of WSe2. We observe unprecedented control of the spin and valley pseudospin in WSe2, where we detect a large magnetic exchange field of nearly 13 T and rapid switching of the WSe2 valley splitting and polarization via flipping of the CrI3 magnetization. The WSe2 phot…
Bilayer quantum Hall systems have a broken symmetry ground state at filling factor $ν=1$ which can be viewed either as an excitonic superfluid or as a pseudospin ferromagnet. We present a theory of inter-layer transport in quantum Hall bilayers that highlights remarkable similarities and critical differences between transport in Josephson junction and ferromagnetic metal spin-transfer devices. Our theory is able to explain the size of the large but finite low bias interlayer conductance and the voltage width of this collective transport anomaly.
We theoretically demonstrate unusual features of superconducting proximity effect in gapped graphene which presents a pseudospin symmetry-broken ferromagnet with a net pseudomagnetization. We find that the presence of a band gap makes the Andreev conductance of graphene superconductor/pseudoferromagnet (S/PF) junction to behave similar to that of a graphene ferromagnet-superconductor junction. The energy gap $Δ_N$ enhance the pseudospin inverted Andreev conductance of S/PF junction to reach a limiting maximum value for $Δ_N\gg μ$, which depending on the bias voltage can be larger than the valu…
We present a theory of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene in which attraction is generated between electrons on the same honeycomb sublattice when the system is close to a sublattice polarization instability. The resulting Cooper pairs are spin-polarized valley-singlets. Because the sublattice polarizability is mainly contributed by interband fluctuations, superconductivity occurs over a wide range of filling fraction. It is suppressed by i) applying a sublattice polarizing field (generated by an aligned BN substrate) or ii) changing moiré band filling to favor valley polarization. …
We present a theory of the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in a model of a doped Weyl semimetal, which serves here as the simplest toy model of a generic three-dimensional metallic ferromagnet with Weyl nodes in the electronic structure. We analytically evaluate the anomalous Hall conductivity as a function of doping, which allows us to explicitly separate the Fermi surface and non Fermi surface contributions to the Hall conductivity by carefully evaluating the zero frequency and zero wavevector limits of the corresponding response function. We show that this separation agrees with the one sug…
We report on the demonstration of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) of a single InSb two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at elevated temperatures up to 4 K. The RDNMR signal of 115In in the simplest pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet triggered by a large direct current shows a peak-dip line shape, where the nuclear relaxation time T1 at the peak and the dip is different but almost temperature independent. The large Zeeman, cyclotron, and exchange energy scales of the InSb 2DEG contribute to the persistence of the RDNMR signal at high temperatures.
We consider bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor $ν=1$ in presence of a bias voltage $Δ_v$ which leads to different filling factors in each layer. We use auxiliary field functional integral approach to study mean-field solutions and collective excitations around them. We find that at large layer separation, the collective excitations soften at a finite wave vector leading to the collapse of quasiparticle gap. Our calculations predict that as the bias voltage is increased, bilayer systems undergo a phase transition from a compressible state to a $ν=1$ phase-coherent state {\it w…
Quantum materials that host a flat band, such as pseudospin-1 lattices and magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, can exhibit drastically new physical phenomena including unconventional superconductivity, orbital ferromagnetism, and Chern insulating behaviors. We report a surprising class of electronic in-gap edge states in pseudospin-1 materials without the conventional need of band-inversion topological phase transitions or introducing magnetism via an external magnetic type of interactions. In particular, we find that, in two-dimensional gapped (insulating) Dirac systems of massive spin-1 qu…
We present a unified theory of charge carrier transport in 2D Dirac systems with broken mirror inversion and time-reversal symmetries (e.g., as realized in ferromagnetic graphene). We find that the entanglement between spin and pseudospin SU(2) degrees of freedom stemming from spin-orbit effects leads to a distinctive gate voltage dependence (change of sign) of the anomalous Hall conductivity approaching the topological gap, which remains robust against impurity scattering and thus is a smoking gun for magnetized 2D Dirac fermions. Furthermore, we unveil a robust skew scattering mechanism, mod…
We investigate two kinds of coreless vortices with axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric configurations in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional in a rotating frame, we derive a nonlinear sigma model generalized to the two-component condensates. In terms of a pseudospin representation, an axisymmetric vortex and a nonaxisymmetric one correspond to spin textures referred to as a "skyrmion" and a "meron-pair", respectively. A variational method is used to investigate the dependence of the sizes of the stable spin textures on system para…

In condensed matter physics, the study of electronic states with SU(N) symmetry has attracted considerable and growing attention in recent years, as systems with such a symmetry can often have a spontaneous symmetry-breaking effect giving rise to a novel ground state. For example, pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet of broken SU(2) symmetry has been realized by bringing two Landau levels close to degeneracy in a bilayer quantum Hall system. In the past several years, the exploration of collective states in other multi-component quantum Hall systems has emerged. Here we show the conventional ps…
These pedagogical lecture notes present a general introduction to most aspects of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects. This is followed by an extensive discussion of quantum Hall ferromagnetism, both for spins in single-layer systems and `pseudospins' in double-layer systems. The effective field theories describing various broken symmetry states and `skyrmion' and `meron' spin textures are derived and discussed in some detail. Pedagogical presentations on Berry phases and lowest Landau level projection are included in appendices.
In a low-disorder two-dimensional electron system, when two Landau levels of opposite spin or pseudospin cross at the Fermi level, the dominance of the exchange energy can lead to a ferromagnetic, quantum Hall ground state whose gap is determined by the exchange energy and has skyrmions as its excitations. This is normally achieved via applying either hydrostatic pressure or uniaxial strain. We study here a very high-quality, low-density, two-dimensional hole system, confined to a 30-nm-wide (001) GaAs quantum well, in which the two lowest-energy Landau levels can be gate tuned to cross at and…
A bilayer electron system in a strong magnetic field at low temperatures, with total Landau level filling factor nu =1, can enter a strongly coupled phase, known as the (111) phase or the quantum Hall pseudospin-ferromagnet. In this phase there is a large quantized Hall drag resistivity between the layers. We consider here structures where regions of (111) phase are separated by regions in which one of the layers is depleted by means of a gate, and various of the regions are connected together by wired contacts. We note that with suitable designs, one can create a DC step-up transformer where …
In a two-subband GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system, the phase diagram of longitudinal resistivity ρ_xx in density and magnetic field plane exhibits an intriguing structure centered at filling factor ν= 4 which is strikingly different from the ring-like structures at lower magnetic fields. Thermal activation measurements reveal an anticrossing gap on each boundary of the structure where intersubband Landau Levels with parallel or antiparallel spin are brought into degeneracy. While the physics of the anticrossing can be ascribed to the pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnetism, as report…
We report studies of pinning mode resonances of magnetic field induced bilayer Wigner crystals of bilayer hole samples with negligible interlayer tunneling and different interlayer separations d, in states with varying layer densities, including unequal layer densities. With unequal layer densities, samples with large d relative to the in-plane carrier-carrier spacing a, two pinning resonances are present, one for each layer. For small d/a samples, a single resonance is observed even with significant density imbalance. These samples, at balance, were shown to exhibit an enhanced pinning mode f…
Semiconducting ferromagnet-nonmagnet interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures present a unique opportunity to investigate magnetic proximity interactions dependent upon a multitude of phenomena including valley and layer pseudospins, moiré periodicity, or exceptionally strong Coulomb binding. Here, we report a charge-state dependency of the magnetic proximity effects between MoSe$_2$ and CrBr$_3$ in photoluminescence, whereby the valley polarization of the MoSe$_2$ trion state conforms closely to the local CrBr$_3$ magnetization, while the neutral exciton state remains insensitive to the f…
The possible quantum Hall ferromagnet at a filling factor $ν=0$ is investigated for the zero-energy (N=0) Landau level of the two dimensional massless Dirac fermions in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure with tilted cones and a twofold valley degeneracy resulting from time-reversal symmetry. In the case of the Dirac cones without tilting, the long-range Coulomb interaction in the N=0 Landau level exhibits the SU(2) valley-pseudo-spin symmetry even to the order $O(a/l_{\rm H})$, in contrast to $N \ne 0$ Landau levels, where $a$ and $l_{\rm H}$ represent the lattice constant and the magnetic…
