The specific heat capacity of a two-dimensional electron gas is derived for two types of the density of states, namely, the Dirac delta function spectrum and that based on a Gaussian function. For the first time, a closed form expression of the specific heat for each case is obtained at half-filling. When the chemical potential is temperature-independent, the temperature is calculated at which the specific heat is a maximum. Here the effects of the broadening of the Landau levels are distinguished from those of the different filling factors. In general, the results derived herein hold for any thermodynamic system having similar resonant states.
It is well established that the ground states of a two-dimensional electron gas with half-filled high ($N \ge 2$) Landau levels are compressible charge-ordered states, known as quantum Hall stripe (QHS) phases. The generic features of QHSs are a maximum (minimum) in a longitudinal resistance $R_{xx}$ ($R_{yy}$) and a non-quantized Hall resistance $R_H$. Here, we report on emergent minima (maxima) in $R_{xx}$ ($R_{yy}$) and plateau-like features in $R_H$ in half-filled $N \ge 3$ Landau levels. Remarkably, these unexpected features develop at temperatures considerably lower than the onset temper…
We investigate the effect of the filling factor on transport anisotropies, known as stripes, in high Landau levels of a two-dimensional electron gas. We find that at certain in-plane magnetic fields, the stripes orientation is sensitive to the filling factor within a given Landau level. This sensitivity gives rise to the emergence of stripes away from half-filling while an orthogonally-oriented, native stripes reside at half-filling. This switching of the anisotropy axes within a single Landau level can be attributed to a strong dependence of the native symmetry breaking potential on the filli…
The Coulomb gap observed in tunneling between parallel two-dimensional electron systems, each at half filling of the lowest Landau level, is found to depend sensitively on the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. Especially at low electron density, the width of the Coulomb gap at first increases sharply with in-plane field, but then abruptly levels off. This behavior appears to coincide with the known transition from partial to complete spin polarization of the half-filled lowest Landau level. The tunneling gap therefore opens a new window onto the spin configuration of two-dimensional elec…
It is shown that the thermodynamic instability at the half filling of Ll leads to the vortex lattice formation with the electronic spectrum analogous to that of graphene with two Dirac Fermi points on Brillouin cell boundary. This result is used for the explanation of the observed current generated by SAW in the heterostructure on the surface of piezoelectric GaAs. Using the existence of two Fermi points instead Fermi surface suggested in the previous theoretical works, permit the explanation of the experimental results.
We compare ground state energies by variational Monte Carlo of the spin unpolarized Halperin 331 and the spin polarized Moore-Read (MR) Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall states at half-filling of the lowest Landau level (LLL) and the second Landau level (SLL) as a function of small deviations around the Coulomb point via the finite thickness effect and direct alterations to the the first two Haldane pseudopotentials. In the comparison we find that in the LLL, either the 331 state or the MR Pfaffian may be lower in energy depending on the deviations. In the SLL, however, the MR Pfaffian is consi…
Using the $α$-T$_3$ model, we carried out analytical and numerical calculations for the static and dynamic polarization functions in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. These results were employed to determine the longitudinal dielectric function and the magnetoplasmon dispersion relation. The magnetic field splits the continuous valence, conduction and flat energy subband into discrete Landau levels which present significant effects on the polarization function and magnetoplasmon dispersion. We present results for a doped layer in the integer quantum Hall regime for fixed hopping …
Nature of the fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level filling factor 5/2 remains elusive despite intensive experimental and theoretical work. While the leading theoretical candidates are Moore-Read Pfaffian (Pf) and its particle-hole conjugate anti-Pfaffian (APf), neither received unambiguous experimental support. We show that a state that is intermediate between them, made of alternating stripes of Pf and APf in the bulk, is a viable candidate. Such a state is shown to be incompressible and thus a charge insulator in the bulk, but a heat conductor due to the presence of gapless neutral …
We present a theory of spontaneous Fermi surface deformations for half-filled Landau levels (filling factors of the form $ν=2n+1/2$). We assume the half-filled level to be in a compressible, Fermi liquid state with a circular Fermi surface. The Landau level projection is incorporated via a modified effective electron-electron interaction and the resulting band structure is described within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We regulate the infrared divergences in the theory and probe the intrinsic tendency of the Fermi surface to deform through Pomeranchuk instabilities. We find that the correspo…
The fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level (LL) filling factor 5/2 is extremely interesting because it is likely the first non-Abelian state, but its precise nature remains unclear after decades of study. We demonstrate this can be resolved by studying the chirality of its graviton excitations, using circularly polarized Raman scattering. We discuss the advantage of this bulk probe over the existing edge probes.
The quantum Hall phase diagram of the half-filled bilayer system in the second Landau level is studied as a function of tunneling and layer separation using exact diagonalization. We make the striking prediction that bilayer structures would manifest two distinct branches of incompressible fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) corresponding to the Abelian 331 state (at moderate to low tunneling and large layer separation) and the non-Abelian Pfaffian state (at large tunneling and small layer separation). The observation of these two FQHE branches and the quantum phase transition between them w…
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in two-dimensional electron system (2DES) is an exotic, superfluid-like matter with an emergent topological order. From the consideration of Aharonov-Bohm interaction of electrons and magnetic field, the ground state of a half-filled lowest Landau level is mathematically transformed to a Fermi sea of composite objects of electrons bound to two flux quanta, termed composite fermions (CFs). A strong support for the CF theories comes from experimental confirmation of the predicted Fermi surface at $ν$ = 1/2 (where $ν$ is the Landau level filling factor) f…
An effective field theory of composite Dirac fermions was proposed by Son [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)] as a theory of the half-filled Landau level with explicit particle-hole symmetry. We compute the electromagnetic response of this Son-Dirac theory on the level of the random phase approximation (RPA), where we pay particular attention to the effect of an additional composite-fermion dipole term that is needed to restore Galilean invariance. We find that once this dipole correction is taken into account, spurious interband transitions and collective modes that are present in the response of…
We study magnetotransport in a high mobility Si two-dimensional electron system by in situ tilting of the sample relative to the magnetic field. A pronounced dip in the longitudinal resistivity is observed during the Landau level crossing process for noninteger filling factors. Together with a Hall resistivity change which exhibits the particle-hole symmetry, this indicates that electrons or holes in the relevant Landau levels become localized at the coincidence where the pseudospin-unpolarized state is expected to be stable.
We investigate numerically different phases that can occur at half filling in the lowest and the first excited Landau levels in wide-well twodimensional electron systems exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field. Within a twocomponent model that takes into account only the two lowest electronic subbands of the quantum well, we derive a phase diagram that compares favorably with an experimental one by Shabani et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 245413 (2013)]. In addition to the compressible composite-fermion Fermi liquid in narrow wells with a substantial subband gap and the incompressible twocomponent (…
We describe an experimental technique to measure the chemical potential, $μ$, in atomically thin layered materials with high sensitivity and in the static limit. We apply the technique to a high quality graphene monolayer to map out the evolution of $μ$ with carrier density throughout the N=0 and N=1 Landau levels at high magnetic field. By integrating $μ$ over filling factor, $ν$, we obtain the ground state energy per particle, which can be directly compared with numerical calculations. In the N=0 Landau level, our data show exceptional agreement with numerical calculations over the whole Lan…
Motivated by recent proposal by Potter et al. [Phys. Rev. X 6, 031026 (2016)] concerning possible thermoelectric signatures of Dirac composite fermions, we perform a systematic experimental study of thermoelectric transport of an ultrahigh-mobility GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs two dimensional electron system at filling factor v = 1/2. We demonstrate that the thermopower Sxx and Nernst Sxy are symmetric and anti-symmetric with respect to B = 0 T, respectively. The measured properties of thermopower Sxx at v = 1/2 are consistent with previous experimental results. The Nernst signals Sxy of v = 1/2, which hav…
Intrinsic Hall conductivity, emerging when chiral symmetry is broken, is at the heart of future low energy consumption devices because it can generate non-dissipative charge neutral current. A symmetry breaking state is also induced by electronic correlation even for the centro-symmetric crystalline materials. However, generation of non-dissipative charge neutral current by intrinsic Hall conductivity induced by such spontaneous symmetry breaking is experimentally elusive. Here we report intrinsic Hall conductivity and generation of a non-dissipative charge neutral current in a spontaneous ant…
