Answering a question of Smale, we prove that the space of C1 diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold contains a residual subset of diffeomorphisms whose centralizers are trivial.
In this paper we study the diffeomorphism centralizer of a vector field: given a vector field it is the set of diffeomorphisms that commutes with the flow. Our main theorem states that for a $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism having at most finitely many sinks or sources, the diffeomorphism centralizer is quasi-trivial. In certain cases, we can promote the quasi-triviality to triviality. We also obtain a criterion for a diffeomorphism in the centralizer to be a reparametrization of the flow.
On the one hand, we prove that the spaces of C^1 symplectomorphisms and of C^1 volume-preserving diffeomorphisms both contain residual subsets of diffeomorphisms whose centralizers are trivial. On the other hand, we show that the space of C^1 diffeomorphisms of the circle and a non-empty open set of C^1 diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere contain dense subsets of diffeomorphisms whose centralizer has a sub-group isomorphic to R.
Given any compact manifold M, we construct a non-empty open subset O of the space of C^1-diffeomorphisms of M and a dense subset D of O such that the centralizer of every diffeomorphism in D is uncountable, hence non-trivial.
In this announcement, we describe the solution in the C1 topology to a question asked by S. Smale on the genericity of trivial centralizers: the set of diffeomorphisms of a compact connected manifold with trivial centralizer residual in Diff^1 but does not contain an open and dense subset.
On the torus of dimension $2$, $3$, or $4$, we show that the subset of diffeomorphisms with trivial centralizer in the $C^1$ topology has nonempty interior. We do this by developing two approaches, the fixed point and the odd prime periodic point, to obtain trivial centralizer for an open neighbourhood of Anosov diffeomorphisms arbitrarily near certain irreducible hyperbolic toral automorphism.
We show there is a residual set of non-Anosov $C^{\infty}$ Axiom A diffeomorphisms with the no cycles property whose elements have trivial centralizer. If $M$ is a surface and $2\leq r\leq \infty$, then we will show there exists an open and dense set of of $C^r$ Axiom A diffeomorphisms with the no cycles property whose elements have trivial centralizer. Additionally, we examine commuting diffeomorphisms preserving a compact invariant set $Λ$ where $Λ$ is a hyperbolic chain recurrent class for one of the diffeomorphisms.
We prove that the spaces of C1 symplectomorphisms and of C1 volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of connected manifolds both contain residual subsets of diffeomorphisms whose centralizers are trivial.
In this note we describe centralizers of volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms which are homotopic to identity on Seifert fibered and hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Our proof follows the strategy of Damjanovic, Wilkinson and Xu (arXiv:1902.05201) who recently classified the centralizer for perturbations of time-$1$ maps of geodesic flows in negative curvature. We strongly rely on recent classification results in dimension 3 established in (arXiv:1908.06227).
In the late nineties, Smale proposed a list of problems for the next century and, among these, it was conjectured that for every $r\ge 1$ a $C^r$-generic diffeomorphism has trivial centralizer. Our contribution here is to prove the triviality of $C^r$-centralizers on hyperbolic basic sets. In particular, $C^r$-generic transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms have a trivial $C^1$-centralizer. These results follow from a more general criterium for expansive homeomorphisms with the gluing orbit property. We also construct a linear Anosov diffeomorphism on $\mathbb T^3$ with discrete, non-trivial central…
Let f be a smooth diffeomorphism of the half-line fixing only the origin and Z^r_f its centralizer in the group of C^r diffeomorphisms. According to well-known results of Szekeres and Kopell, Z^1_f is always a one-parameter group, naturally identified to \R, (with f identified to 1). On the other hand, Z^r_f, for r greater or equal to 2, can be smaller: in [Se], Sergeraert constructed an f whose C^infty centralizer reduces to the infinite cyclic group generated by f (i.e Z^\infty_f identifies to \Z). In [Ey1], we adapted Sergeraert's construction to obtain an f whose C^r centralizer, for all r…
In this paper, we study the centralizer of a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^3$ which is homotopic to an Anosov automorphism, and we show that either its centralizer is virtually trivial or such diffeomorphism is smoothly conjugate to its linear part.
We show generic $C^\infty$ hyperbolic flows (Axiom A and no cycles, but not transitive Anosov) commute with no $C^\infty$-diffeomorphism other than a time-t map of the flow itself. Kinematic expansivity, a substantial weakening of expansivity, implies that $C^0$ flows have quasi-discrete $C^0$-centralizer, and additional conditions broader than transitivity then give discrete $C^0$-centralizer. We also prove centralizer-rigidity: a diffeomorphism commuting with a generic hyperbolic flow is determined by its values on any open set.
Let f be a smooth diffeomorphism of the half-line fixing only the origin and Z^r its centralizer in the group of C^r diffeomorphisms. According to well-known results of Szekeres and Kopell, Z^1 is a one-parameter group. On the other hand, Sergeraert constructed an f whose centralizer Z^r, $2\le r\le \infty$, reduces to the group generated by f. We show that Z^r can actually be a proper dense and uncountable subgroup of Z^1 and that this phenomenon is not scarce.
We discover a rigidity phenomenon within the volume-preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with $1$-dimensional center. In particular, for smooth, ergodic perturbations of certain algebraic systems -- including the discretized geodesic flows over hyperbolic manifolds and certain toral automorphisms with simple spectrum and exactly one eigenvalue on the unit circle, the smooth centralizer is either virtually $\mathbb Z^\ell$ or contains a smooth flow. At the heart of this work are two very different rigidity phenomena. The first was discovered in [2,3] for a class of volume-preserving …
Given a dynamical system $(X,G)$, the centralizer $C(G)$ denotes the group of all homeomorphisms of $X$ which commute with the action of $G$. This group is sometimes called the automorphism group of the dynamical system $(X,G)$. In this note, we generalize the construction of Bulatek and Kwiatkowski (1992) to $\mathbb Z^d$-Toepltiz systems by identifying a class of $\mathbb Z^d$-Toeplitz systems that have trivial centralizers. We show that this class of $\mathbb Z^d$-Toeplitz with trivial centralizers contains systems with positive topological entropy.
We show that if $Λ$ is a codimension-one hyperbolic attractor for a $C^r$ diffeomorphism $f$, where $2\leq r\leq \infty$, and $f$ is not Anosov, then there is a neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$ of $f$ in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ and an open and dense set $\mathcal{V}$ of $\mathcal{U}$ such that any $g\in\mathcal{V}$ has a trivial centralizer on the basin of attraction for $Λ$.
We prove that for infinite rank-one transformations satisfying a property called "partial boundedness," the only commuting transformations are powers of the original transformation. This shows that a large class of infinite measure-preserving rank-one transformations with bounded cuts have trivial centralizers. We also characterize when partially bounded transformations are isomorphic to their inverse.
In this paper, we investigate the question of whether a typical vector field on a compact connected Riemannian manifold $M^d$ has a `small' centralizer. In the $C^1$ case, we give two criteria, one of which is $C^1$-generic, which guarantees that the centralizer of a $C^1$-generic vector field is indeed small, namely \textit{collinear}. The other criterion states that a $C^1$ \textit{separating} flow has a collinear $C^1$-centralizer. When all the singularities are hyperbolic, we prove that the collinearity property can actually be promoted to a stronger one, refered as \textit{quasi-trivialit…
In this paper we study the centralizer of flows and $\mathbb R^d$-actions on compact Riemannian manifolds. We prove that the centralizer of every $C^\infty$ Komuro-expansive flow with non-ressonant singularities is trivial, meaning it is the smallest possible, and deduce there exists an open and dense subset of geometric Lorenz attractors with trivial centralizer. We show that $\mathbb R^d$-actions obtained as suspension of $\mathbb Z^d$-actions are expansive if and only if the same holds for the $\mathbb Z^d$-actions. We also show that homogeneous expansive $\mathbb R^d$-actions have quasi-tr…
We show that if $M$ is a compact oriented surface of genus 0 and $G$ is a subgroup of $\Symp^ω_μ(M)$ which has an infinite normal solvable subgroup, then $G$ is virtually abelian. In particular the centralizer of an infinite order $f \in \Symp^ω_μ(M)$ is virtually abelian. Another immediate corollary is that if $G$ is a solvable subgroup of $\Symp^ω_μ(M)$ then $G$ is virtually abelian. We also prove a special case of the Tits Alternative for subgroups of $\Symp^ω_μ(S^2).$
We study real analytic perturbations of hyperbolic linear automorphisms on the 2-torus. The Koopman and the transfer operator are nuclear of order 0 when acting on a suitable Hilbert space. We show the generic existence of non-trivial Ruelle resonances for both operators. We prove that some of the perturbations preserve the volume and some of them do not.
We give a definition for a rank-1 homeomorphism of a zero-dimensional Polish space X. We show that if a rank-1 homeomorphism of X satisfies a certain non-degeneracy condition, then it has trivial centralizer in the group of all homeomorphisms of X, i.e., it commutes only with its integral powers.
We present a sufficient condition for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms having heterodimensional cycles to be approximated arbitrarily well by diffeomorphisms with non-trivial contracting wandering domains via several perturbations. The key idea is to show that diffeomorphisms with heterodimensional cycles associated with saddle points with non-real eigenvalues can be approximated by diffeomorphisms with generalized homoclinic tangencies presented by Tatjer. The generalized homoclinic tangency is an organizing center including a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation, by which one can obtain non-trivial …
In a previous work it is shown that every finite group $G$ of diffeomorphisms of a connected smooth manifold $M$ of dimension $\geq 2$ equals, up to quotient by the flow, the centralizer of the group of smooth automorphisms of a $G$-invariant complete vector field $X$ (shortly $X$ describes $G$). Here the foregoing result is extended to show that every finite group of diffeomorphisms of $M$ is described, within the group of all homeomorphisms of $M$, by a vector field. As a consequence, it is proved that a finite group of homeomorphisms of a compact connected topological $4$-manifold, whose ac…
Denote by $\DC(M)_0$ the identity component of the group of the compactly supported $C^r$ diffeomorphisms of a connected $C^\infty$ manifold $M$. We show that if $\dim(M)\geq2$ and $r\neq \dim(M)+1$, then any homomorphism from $\DC(M)_0$ to ${\Diff}^1(\R)$ or ${\Diff}^1(S^1)$ is trivial.
We study the group of interval exchange transformations. Let $T$ be an $m$-interval exchange transformation. By the rank of $T$ we mean the dimension of the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space spanned by the lengths of the exchanged subintervals. We prove that if $T$ satisfies Keane's infinite distinct orbit condition and $\text{rank}(T)>1+\lfloor m/2 \rfloor$ then the only interval exchange transformations which commute with $T$ are its powers. In the case that $T$ is a minimal 3-interval exchange transformation, we prove a more precise result: $T$ has a trivial centralizer in the group of interval exc…
We show that various classes of closed manifolds with non-trivial higher homotopy groups do not support (transitive) Anosov diffeomorphisms. In particular we show that a finite product of spheres at least one of which is even-dimensional does not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms.
The main result of this paper is that every non-trivial Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed oriented surface of genus at least one has periodic points of arbitrarily high period. The same result is true for S^2 provided the diffeomorphism has at least three fixed points. In addition we show that up to isotopy relative to its fixed point set, every orientation preserving diffeomorphism F: S --> S of a closed orientable surface has a normal form. If the fixed point set is finite this is just the Thurston normal form.
We show that the integrated Lyapunov exponents of $C^1$ volume preserving diffeomorphisms are simultaneously continuous at a given diffeomorphism only if the corresponding Oseledets splitting is trivial (all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero) or else dominated (uniform hyperbolicity in the projective bundle) almost everywhere. We deduce a sharp dichotomy for generic volume preserving diffeomorphisms on any compact manifold: almost every orbit either is projectively hyperbolic or has all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero. Similarly, for a residual subset of all $C^1$ symplectic diffeomorphisms on…
We prove that for a dense set of irrational numbers $α$, the analytic centraliser of the map $e^{2πi α} z+ z^2$ near $0$ is trivial. We also prove that some analytic circle diffeomorphisms in the Arnold family, with irrational rotation numbers, have trivial centralisers. These provide the first examples of such maps with trivial centralisers.
We introduce Smale A-homeomorphisms that includes regular, semi-chaotic, chaotic, and super chaotic homeomorphisms of topo\-lo\-gi\-cal $n$-manifold $M^n$, $n\geq 2$. Smale A-homeo\-mor\-p\-hisms contain A-diffeomorphisms (in particular, structurally stable diffeomorphisms) provided $M^n$ admits a smooth structure. Regular A-homeomorphisms contain all Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms, while semi-chaotic and chaotic A-homeomorphisms contain A-diffeo\-mor\-p\-hisms with trivial and nontrivial basic sets. Super chaotic A-homeo\-mor\-p\-hisms contain A-diffeomorphisms whose basic sets are nontrivial. W…
Recent works related to Palis conjecture of J. Yang, S. Crovisier, M. Sambarino and D. Yang showed that any aperiodic class of a $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism far away from homoclinic bifurcations (or homoclinic tangencies) is partially hyperbolic. We show in this paper that, generically, a non-trivial dominated splitting implies partial hyperbolicity for an aperiodic class if it is Lyapunov stable. More precisely, for $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, if a Lyapunov stable aperiodic class has a non-trivial dominated splitting $E\oplus F$, then one of the two bundles is hyperbolic (either $E$ is co…
We show that on any smooth compact connected manifold of dimension $m\geq 2$ admitting a smooth non-trivial circle action $\mathcal{S} = \left\{S_t\right\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$, $S_{t+1}=S_t$, the set of weakly mixing $C^{\infty}$-diffeomorphisms which preserve both a smooth volume $ν$ and a measurable Riemannian metric is dense in $\mathcal{A}_α \left(M\right)= \overline{ \left\{h \circ S_α \circ h^{-1} : h \in \text{Diff}^{\infty}\left(M, ν\right) \right\}}^{C^{\infty}}$ for every Liouvillean number $α$. The proof is based on a quantitative version of the Anosov-Katok-method with explicitly c…
A topological classification of many classes of dynamical systems with regular dynamics in low dimensions is often reduced to combinatorial invariants. In dimension 3 combinatorial invariants are proved to be insufficient even for simplest Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. The complete topological invariant for the systems with a single saddle point on the 3-sphere is the embedding of the homotopy non-trivial knot into the manifold $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb S^1$. If a diffeomorphism has several saddle points their unstable separatrices form arcs frames in the basin of the sink and circles frame in …
Given closed topological $n$-manifold $M^n$, $n\geq 2$, one introduces the classes of Smale regular $SRH(M^n)$ and Smale semi-regular $SsRH(M^n)$ homeomorphisms of $M^n$ with $SRH(M^n)\subset~SsRH(M^n)$. The class $SRH(M^n)$ contains all Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms, while $SsRH(M^n)$ contains A-diffeomorphisms with trivial and some nontrivial basic sets provided $M^n$ admits a smooth structure. We select invariant sets that determine dynamics of Smale homeomorphisms. This allows us to get necessary and sufficient conditions of conjugacy for $SRH(M^n)$ and $SsRH(M^n)$. We deduce applications fo…
We prove that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed symplectic manifold equipped with an atoroidal symplectic form has simple non-contractible periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period, provided that the diffeomorphism has a non-degenerate (or even isolated and homologically non-trivial) periodic orbit with non-zero homology class and the set of one-periodic orbits in that class is finite.
We study aspherical manifolds that do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. Weakening conditions of Gogolev and Lafont, we show that the product of an infranilmanifold with finitely many aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have trivial center and finite outer automorphism group does not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. In the course of our study, we obtain a result of independent group theoretic and topological interest on the stability of the Hopf property, namely, that the product of finitely many Hopfian groups with trivial center is Hopfian.
We prove that the group of diffeomorphisms of the interval $[0,1]$ contains surface groups whose action on $(0,1)$ has no global fix point, is topologically transitive, and such that only countably many points of the interval $(0,1)$ have non-trivial stabiliser.
This self-contained paper is part of a series \cite{FF2,FF3} on actions by diffeomorphisms of infinite groups on compact manifolds. The two main results presented here are: 1) Any homomorphism of (almost any) mapping class group or automorphism group of a free group into $\Diff_+^r(S^1), r\geq 2$ is trivial. For r=0 Nielsen showed that in many cases nontrivial (even faithful) representations exist. Somewhat weaker results are proven for finite index subgroups. 2) We construct a finitely-presented group of real-analytic diffeomorphisms of $\R$ which is not residually finite.
In this paper we're considering the question of whether or not a partial order on a finite set is realisable as a Smale order of a structurally stable diffeomorphism or flow acting on a closed manifold. We classify the orders that are realisable by 1) an $Ω$-stable diffeomorphism acting on a closed surface 2) an Anosov flow on a closed 3-manifold 3) a stable diffeomorphism with trivial attractors and repellers acting on a closed surface.
We prove that if $f$ is a $C^1$-generic symplectic diffeomorphism then the Oseledets splitting along almost every orbit is either trivial or partially hyperbolic. In addition, if $f$ is not Anosov then all the exponents in the center bundle vanish. This establishes in full a result announced by R. Mañé in the ICM 1983. The main technical novelty is a probabilistic method for the construction of perturbations, using random walks.
Let $M$ be a manifold, $N$ a 1-dimensional manifold. Assuming $r \neq \dim(M)+1$, we show that any nontrivial homomorphism $ρ: \text{Diff}^r_c(M)\to \text{Homeo}(N)$ has a standard form: necessarily $M$ is $1$-dimensional, and there are countably many embeddings $ϕ_i: M\to N$ with disjoint images such that the action of $ρ$ is conjugate (via the product of the $ϕ_i$) to the diagonal action of $\text{Diff}^r_c(M)$ on $M \times M \times ...$ on $\bigcup_i ϕ_i(M)$, and trivial elsewhere. This solves a conjecture of Matsumoto. We also show that the groups $\text{Diff}^r_c(M)$ have no countable ind…
We prove that the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere admits a non-trivial homogeneous quasimorphism to the real numbers with the following property. Its value on any diffeomorphism supported in a sufficiently small open subset of the sphere equals to the Calabi invariant of the diffeomorphism. This result extends to more general symplectic manifolds: If the symplectic manifold is monotone and its quantum homology algebra is semi-simple we construct a similar quasimorphism on the universal cover of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
We show that various classes of products of manifolds do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Exploiting the Ruelle-Sullivan cohomology class, we prove that the product of a negatively curved manifold with a rational homology sphere does not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. We extend this result to products of finitely many negatively curved manifolds of dimensions at least three with a rational homology sphere that has vanishing simplicial volume. As an application of this study, we obtain new examples of manifolds that do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms, inc…
We prove that the space of actions of Z^d by C^1 (orientation-preserving) diffeomorphisms of either the interval or the circle is connected by arcs. This is proved by showing that all such actions can be C^0 conjugated via a 1-parameter family into diffeomorphisms that converge to either the trivial action or an action by Euclidean rotations. Extensions for nilpotent group actions are provided.
