The main result of this paper is that every non-trivial Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed oriented surface of genus at least one has periodic points of arbitrarily high period. The same result is true for S^2 provided the diffeomorphism has at least three fixed points. In addition we show that up to isotopy relative to its fixed point set, every orientation preserving diffeomorphism F: S --> S of a closed orientable surface has a normal form. If the fixed point set is finite this is just the Thurston normal form.
We prove results related to robust transitivity and density of periodic points of Partially Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms under conditions involving Accessibility and a property in the tangent bundle .
We study the effects that the constant periodic data condition have on topological entropy of Anosov diffeomorphisms. Under constant periodic data condition we prove that Anosov diffeomorphism has finitely many measures of maximal entropy and each one of them is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue. From this, in the setting of $C^{\infty}-$Anosov diffeomorphisms satisfying constant periodic data, we provide a characterization of transitivity property via measures of maximal entropy.
We prove that a "positive probability" subset of the boundary of the set of hyperbolic (Axiom A) surface diffeomorphisms with no cycles $\mathcal{H}$ is constituted by Kupka-Smale diffeomorphisms: all periodic points are hyperbolic and their invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Lack of hyperbolicity arises from the presence of a tangency between a stable manifold and an unstable manifold, one of which is not associated to a periodic point. All these diffeomorphisms that we construct lie on the boundary of the same connected component of $\mathcal{H}$.
We prove that periodic asymptotic expansiveness introduced in \cite{em} implies the equidistribution of periodic points to measures of maximal entropy. Then following Yomdin's approach \cite{Yom} we show by using semi-algebraic tools that $C^\infty$ interval maps and $C^\infty$ surface diffeomorphisms satisfy this expansiveness property respectively for repelling and saddle hyperbolic points with Lyapunov exponents uniformly away from zero.
We consider transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms for which every periodic orbit has only one positive and one negative Lyapunov exponent. We establish various properties of such systems including strong pinching, C^{1+β} smoothness of the Anosov splitting, and C^1 smoothness of measurable invariant conformal structures and distributions. We apply these results to volume preserving diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional stable and unstable distributions and diagonalizable derivatives of the return maps at periodic points. We show that a finite cover of such a diffeomorphism is smoothly conjugate to …
We prove that for any $C^r$ diffeomorphism, $f$, of a compact manifold of dimension $d>2$, $1\leq r\leq \infty$, admitting a transverse homoclinic intersection, we can find a $C^1$-open neighborhood of $f$ containing a $C^1$-open and $C^r$-dense set of $C^r$ diffeomorphisms which have a periodic point with real and simple spectrum. We use this result to prove that $C^r$-generically among $C^r$ diffeomorphisms with horseshoes, we have density of periodic points with real and simple spectrum inside the horseshoe. As a corollary, we obtain that generically in the $C^1$-topology the unique obstruc…
We consider inverse periodic shadowing properties of discrete dynamical systems generated by diffeomorphisms of closed smooth manifolds. We show that the $C^1$-interior of the set of all diffeomorphisms having so-called inverse periodic shadowing property coincides with the set of $Ω$-stable diffeomorphisms. The equivalence of Lipschitz inverse periodic shadowing property and hyperbolicity of the closure of all periodic points is proved. Besides, we prove that the set of all diffeomorphisms that have Lipschitz inverse periodic shadowing property and whose periodic points are dense in the nonwa…
Using a sifting-shadowing combination, we prove in this paper that an arbitrary $\mathrm{C}^1$-class local diffeomorphism $f$ of a closed manifold $M^n$ is uniformly expanding on the closure $\mathrm{Cl}_{M^n}(\mathrm{Per}(f))$ of its periodic point set $\mathrm{Per}(f)$, if it is nonuniformly expanding on $\mathrm{Per}(f)$.
Let M be a compact manifold of dimension at least 2, Diff^r(M) be the space of C^r diffeomorphisms of M. Define for any diffeomorphism f in Diff^r(M) number of isolated periodic points of period n by P_n(f)=# {isolated x in M: f^n(x)=x}. Artin--Mazur proved that for a dense set of diffeomorphisms the number of periodic points P_n(f) growth at most exponentially fast in n. The author proved that there is an open set N \subset Diff^r(M) such that for a Baire generic set of diffeomorphisms the number of periodic points P_n(f) growth arbitrarily fast. Arnold posed a problem: Prove that diffeomorph…
We show a $C^r$ connecting lemma for area-preserving surface diffeomorphisms and for periodic Hamiltonian on surfaces. We prove that for a generic $C^r$, $r=1, 2, ...$, $\infty$, area-preserving diffeomorphism on a compact orientable surface, homotopic to identity, every hyperbolic periodic point has a transversal homoclinic point. We also show that for a $C^r$, $r=1, 2, ...$, $\infty$ generic time periodic Hamiltonian vector field in a compact orientable surface, every hyperbolic periodic trajectory has a transversal homoclinic point. The proof explores the special properties of diffeomorphis…
We describe the topological structure of closed manifolds of dimension no less than four which admit Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms such that its non-wandering set contains any number of sink periodic points, and any number of source periodic points, and few saddle periodic points.
We prove that there exists an open subset of the set of real-analytic Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a closed surface in which diffeomorphisms exhibiting fast growth of the number of periodic points are dense. We also prove that there exists an open subset of the set of smooth area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a closed surface in which typical diffeomorphisms exhibit fast growth of the number of periodic points.
Consider a compact manifold M of dimension at least 2 and the space of C^r-smooth diffeomorphisms Diff^r(M). The classical Artin-Mazur theorem says that for a dense subset D of Diff^r(M) the number of isolated periodic points grows at most exponentially fast (call it the A-M property). We extend this result and prove that diffeomorphisms having only hyperbolic periodic points with the A-M property are dense in Diff^r(M). Our proof of this result is much simpler than the original proof of Artin-Mazur. The second main result is that the A-M property is not (Baire) generic. Moreover, in a Newhous…
Let $Σ$ be a compact surface equipped with an area form. There is an long standing open question by Katok, which, in particular, asks whether every entropy-zero Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a surface lies in the $C^0$-closure of the set of integrable diffeomorphisms. A natural generalization of this question is to ask to what extent one family of `simple' Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $Σ$ can be approximated by the other. In this paper we show that the set of autonomous Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms is not Hofer-dense in the set of integrable Hamiltonians. We construct explicit examples of int…
Let $Σ$ be a surface equipped with an area form. There is an long standing open question by Katok, which, in particular, asks whether every entropy-zero Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a surface lies in the $C^0$-closure of the set of integrable diffeomorphisms. A slightly weaker version of this question asks: ``Does every entropy-zero Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a surface lie in the $C^0$-closure of the set of autonomous diffeomorphisms?'' In this paper we answer in negative the later question. In particular, we show that on a surface $Σ$ the set of autonomous Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms is n…
We construct a finitely generated subgroup of $\text{Diff}^{\infty}(\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^1)$ where every element is conjugate to an isometry but such that the group action itself is far from isometric (the group has "exponential growth of derivatives"). As a corollary, one obtains a locally constant $\text{Diff}^{\infty}(\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^1)$ valued cocycle over a hyperbolic dynamical system which has elliptic behavior over its periodic orbits but which preserves a measure with non-zero top Fiber Lyapunov exponent. Additionally, we provide new examples of Banach cocycles…
We construct an explicit example of family of non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, at the boundary of the set of uniformly hyperbolic systems, with one orbit of cubic heteroclinic tangency. One of the leaves involved in this heteroclinic tangency is periodic, and there is a certain degree of freedom for the choice of the second one. For a non-countable set of choices, this leaf is not periodic and the diffeomorphism is Kupka-Smale: every periodic point is hyperbolic and the intersections of stable and unstable leaves of periodic points are transverse. As a consequence of our construction,…
In this article we prove that on any closed symplectic manifold there exists an arbitrarily $C^\infty$-small Hamiltonian diffeomorphism not admitting a square root.
This paper deals with the dynamics of a simple family of holomorphic diffeomorphisms of $\C^2$: the polynomial automorphisms. This family of maps has been studied by a number of authors. We refer to [BLS] for a general introduction to this class of dynamical systems. An interesting object from the point of view of potential theory is the equilibrium measure $μ$ of the set $K$ of points with bounded orbits. In [BLS] $μ$ is also characterized dynamically as the unique measure of maximal entropy. Thus $μ$ is also an equilibrium measure from the point of view of the thermodynamical formalism. In t…
We prove that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed symplectic manifold equipped with an atoroidal symplectic form has simple non-contractible periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period, provided that the diffeomorphism has a non-degenerate (or even isolated and homologically non-trivial) periodic orbit with non-zero homology class and the set of one-periodic orbits in that class is finite.
Given a diffeomorphism of the plane, which has a periodic orbit, we show how Nielsen fixed point theory can be used to establish the existence of a fixed point which is linked with this periodic orbit.
In this article, we study the Calabi invariant on the unit disk usually defined on compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the open disk. In particular we extend the Calabi invariant to the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of the closed disk which preserves the standard symplectic form. We also compute the Calabi invariant for some diffeomorphisms of the disk which satisfies some rigidity hypothesis.
Inspired by the techniques of Givental and Théret, we provide a proof with generating functions of a recent result of Ginzburg-Gürel concerning the periodic points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}\text{P}^d$. For instance, we are able to prove that fixed points of pseudo-rotations are isolated as invariant sets or that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic fixed point has infinitely many periodic points.
Asaoka & Irie recently proved a $C^{\infty}$ closing lemma of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed surfaces. We reformulated their techniques into a more general perturbation lemma for area-preserving diffeomorphism and proved a $C^{\infty}$ closing lemma for area-preserving diffeomorphisms on a torus that is isotopic to identity. i.e., we show that the set of periodic orbits is dense for a generic diffeomorphism isotopic to identity area-preserving diffeomorphism on torus. The main tool is the flux vector of area-preserving diffeomorphisms which is, different from Hamiltonian cases, non-zero…
For partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with mostly expanding and mostly contracting centers, we establish a topological structure, called skeleton{a set consisting of finitely many hyperbolic periodic points with maximal cardinality for which there exist no heteroclinic intersections. We build the one-to-one corresponding between periodic points in any skeleton and physical measures. By making perturbations on skeletons, we study the continuity of physical measures with respect to dynamics under $C^1$-topology.
Here we use Vinogradov's prime distribution theorem and a multi-dimensional generalization due to Harman to strengthen some recent results concerning the periodic points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. In particular we establish resonance relations for the mean indices of the fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms which do not have periodic points with arbitrarily large periods in $\mathbb{P}^2$, the set of natural numbers greater than one which have at most two prime factors when counted with multiplicity. As an application of these results we partially recover, using only symplectic too…
We show that the actions and indexes of fixed points of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many periodic points must satisfy certain relations, provided that the quantum cohomology of the ambient manifold meets an algebraic requirement satisfied for projective spaces, Grassmannians and many other manifolds. We also refine a previous result on the Conley conjecture for negative monotone symplectic manifolds, due to the second and third authors, and show that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of such a manifold must have simple periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period whenever its fixed po…
We show that the following three properties of a diffeomorphism $f$ of a smooth closed manifold are equivalent: (i) $f$ belongs to the $C^1$-interior of the set of diffeomorphisms having periodic shadowing property; (ii) $f$ has Lipschitz periodic shadowing property; (iii) $f$ is $Ω$-stable.
In this work we lead with expanding maps of the circle and Anosov diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^d, d \geq 2.$ We prove that, for these maps, \textit{constant periodic data} imply \textit{same periodic data of these maps and their linearizations}, so in particular we have smooth conjugacy. For expanding maps of the circle and Anosov diffeomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^d, d= 2, 3,$ we have global rigidity. In higher dimensions, $d \geq 4,$ we can establish a result of local rigidity, in several cases. The main tools of this work are celebrated results of rigidity involving same periodic data with lin…
We show that for a special class of geometric quantizations with "small" quantum errors, the quantum classical correspondence gives rise to an asymptotic projective representation of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. As an application, we get an obstruction to Hamiltonian actions of finitely presented groups.
We consider the space of $C^1$-diffeomorphims equipped with the $C^1$-topology on a three dimensional closed manifold. It is known that there are open sets in which $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms display uncountably many chain recurrences classes, while only countably many of them may contain periodic orbits. The classes without periodic orbits, called aperiodic classes, are the main subject of this paper. The aim of the paper is to show that aperiodic classes of $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms can exhibit a variety of topological properties. More specifically, there are $C^1$-generic diffeomorph…
There is a $C^1$-residual (Baire second class) subset $\mathcal{R}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms on $2d$-dimensional manifold, $d\geq 1$, such that for every non-Anosov $f$ in $\mathcal{R}$ its topological entropy is lower bounded by the supremum of the Lyapunov exponents of their hyperbolic periodic points in the \emph{unbreakable central subbundle} (i.e., central direction with no dominated splitting) of $f$. The previous result deals with the fact that for $f$ in a residual set $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms (containing $\mathcal{R}$) satisfies a trichotomy: or $f$ is …
We show that whenever a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism or a Reeb flow has a finite number of periodic orbits, the mean indices of these orbits must satisfy a resonance relation, provided that the ambient manifold meets some natural requirements. In the case of Reeb flows, this leads to simple expressions (purely in terms of the mean indices) for the mean Euler characteristics. These are invariants of the underlying contact structure which are capable of distinguishing some contact structures that are homotopic but not diffeomorphic.
We prove a very general Weyl-type law for Periodic Floer Homology, estimating the action of twisted Periodic Floer Homology classes over essentially any coefficient ring in terms of the grading and the degree, and recovering the Calabi invariant of Hamiltonians in the limit. We also prove a strong non-vanishing result, showing that under a monotonicity assumption which holds for a dense set of maps, the Periodic Floer Homology has infinite rank. An application of these results yields that a $C^{\infty}$-generic area-preserving diffeomorphism of a closed surface has a dense set of periodic poin…
We prove a $C^\infty$ closing lemma for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed surfaces. This is a consequence of a $C^\infty$ closing lemma for Reeb flows on closed contact three-manifolds, which was recently proved as an application of spectral invariants in embedded contact homology. A key new ingredient of this paper is an analysis of an area-preserving map near its fixed point, which is based on some classical results in Hamiltonian dynamics: existence of KAM invariant circles for elliptic fixed points, and convergence of the Birkhoff normal form for hyperbolic fixed points.
In this paper we consider closed orientable surfaces $S$ of positive genus and $C^r$-diffeomorphisms $f:S\rightarrow S$ isotopic to the identity ($r\geq 1)$. The main objective is to study periodic open topological disks which are homotopically unbounded (i.e. which lift to unbounded connected sets in the universal covering). We show that these disks are not uncommon, and are related to important dynamical phenomena. We also study the dynamics on these disks under certain generic conditions. Our first main result implies that for the torus (or for arbitrary surfaces, with an additional conditi…
An area-preserving diffeomorphism of an annulus has an "action function" which measures how the diffeomorphism distorts curves. The average value of the action function over the annulus is known as the Calabi invariant of the diffeomorphism, while the average value of the action function over a periodic orbit of the diffeomorphism is the mean action of the orbit. If an area-preserving annulus diffeomorphism is a rotation near the boundary of the annulus, and if its Calabi invariant is less than the maximum boundary value of the action function, then we show that the infimum of the mean action …
We consider C^r-diffeomorphisms of a compact smooth manifold having a pair of robust heterodimensional cycles where r is a positive integer or infinity. We prove that if certain conditions about the signatures of non-linearities and Schwarzian derivatives of the transition maps are satisfied, then by giving C^r arbitrarily small perturbation, we can produce a periodic point at which the first return map in the center direction is C^r-flat. As a consequence, we will prove that C^r-generic diffeomorphisms in the neighborhood of the initial diffeomorphism exhibit super-exponential growth of numbe…
We prove a criteria for uniform hyperbolicity based on the periodic points of the transformation. More precisely, if a mild (non uniform) hyperbolicity condition holds for the periodic points of any diffeomorphism in a residual subset of a $C^1$-open set $\SU$ then there exists an open and dense subset $\SA\subset \SU$ of Axiom A diffeomorphisms. Moreover, we also prove a noninvertible version of Ergodic Closing Lemma which we use to prove a counterpart of this result for local diffeomorphisms. As a simple corollary of our techniques, we have that an arbitrary $\mathrm{C}^1$-class local diffeo…
In this article we prove that for a smooth fiberwise convex Hamiltonian, the asymptotic Hofer distance from the identity gives a strict upper bound to the value at 0 of Mather's $β$ function, thus providing a negative answer to a question asked by K. Siburg in \cite{Siburg1998}. However, we show that equality holds if one considers the asymptotic distance defined in \cite{Viterbo1992}.
We give a description of ergodic components of SRB measures in terms of ergodic homoclinic classes associated to hyperbolic periodic points. For transitive surface diffeomorphisms, we prove that there exists at most one SRB measure.
Given a symplectic surface $(Σ, ω)$ of genus $g \ge 4$, we show that the free group with two generators embeds into every asymptotic cone of $(\mathrm{Ham}(Σ, ω), d_\mathrm{H})$, where $d_\mathrm{H}$ is the Hofer metric. The result stabilizes to products with symplectically aspherical manifolds.
A diffeomorphism f is called super exponential divergent if for every r>1, the lower limit of #Per_n(f)/r^n diverges to infinity as n tends to infinity, where Per_n(f) is the set of all periodic points of f with period n. This property is stronger than the usual super exponential growth of the number of periodic points. We show that for a three dimensional manifold M, there exists an open subset O of Diff^1(M) such that diffeomorphisms with super exponential divergent property form a dense subset of O in the C^1-topology. A relevant result of non super exponential divergence for diffeomorphism…
We study the dynamics of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on convex symplectic manifolds. To this end we first establish the Piunikhin-Salamon-Schwarz isomorphism between the Floer homology and the Morse homology of such a manifold, and then use this isomorphism to construct a biinvariant metric on the group of compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms analogous to the metrics constructed by Viterbo and Schwarz. These tools are then applied to prove and reprove results in Hamiltonian dynamics. Our applications comprise a uniform lower estimate for the slow entropy of a compactly supported Ham…
We construct an embedding $Φ$ of $[0,1]^{\infty}$ into $Ham(M, ω)$, the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a suitable closed symplectic manifold $(M, ω)$. We then prove that $Φ$ is in fact a quasi-isometry. After imposing further assumptions on $(M, ω)$, we adapt our methods to construct a similar embedding of $\mathbb{R} \oplus [0,1]^{\infty}$ into either $Ham(M, ω)$ or $\widetilde{Ham}(M, ω)$, the universal cover of $Ham(M, ω)$. Along the way, we prove results related to the filtered Floer chain complexes of radially symmetric Hamiltonians. Our proofs rely heavily on a continuity result…
