Let $Σ$ be a compact surface equipped with an area form. There is an long standing open question by Katok, which, in particular, asks whether every entropy-zero Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a surface lies in the $C^0$-closure of the set of integrable diffeomorphisms. A natural generalization of this question is to ask to what extent one family of `simple' Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $Σ$ can be approximated by the other. In this paper we show that the set of autonomous Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms is not Hofer-dense in the set of integrable Hamiltonians. We construct explicit examples of integrable diffeomorphisms which cannot be Hofer-approximated by autonomous ones.
In this article we show that the braid type of a set of $1$-periodic orbits of a non-degenerate Hamiltonian diffeomorphism on a surface is stable under perturbations which are sufficiently small with respect to the Hofer metric $d_{\rm Hofer}$. We call this new phenomenon braid stability for the Hofer metric. We apply braid stability to study the stability of the topological entropy $h_{\rm top}$ of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on surfaces with respect to small perturbations with respect to $d_{\rm Hofer}$. We show that $h_{\rm top}$ is lower semicontinuous on the space of Hamiltonian diffeomor…
Let $Σ$ be a compact surface of genus $g \geq 1$ equipped with an area form. We construct eggbeater Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms which lie arbitrarily far in the Hofer metric from the set of autonomous Hamiltonians. This result is already known for $g \geq 2$ (our argument provides an alternative, very simple construction compared to previous publications) while the case $g = 1$ is new.
We find robust obstructions to representing a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism as a full $k$-th power, $k \geq 2,$ and in particular, to including it into a one-parameter subgroup. The robustness is understood in the sense of Hofer's metric. Our approach is based on the theory of persistence modules applied in the context of filtered Floer homology. We present applications to geometry and dynamics of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
We construct an embedding $Φ$ of $[0,1]^{\infty}$ into $Ham(M, ω)$, the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a suitable closed symplectic manifold $(M, ω)$. We then prove that $Φ$ is in fact a quasi-isometry. After imposing further assumptions on $(M, ω)$, we adapt our methods to construct a similar embedding of $\mathbb{R} \oplus [0,1]^{\infty}$ into either $Ham(M, ω)$ or $\widetilde{Ham}(M, ω)$, the universal cover of $Ham(M, ω)$. Along the way, we prove results related to the filtered Floer chain complexes of radially symmetric Hamiltonians. Our proofs rely heavily on a continuity result…
We compare Hofer's geometries on two spaces associated with a closed symplectic manifold M. The first space is the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. The second space L consists of all Lagrangian submanifolds of $M \times M$ which are exact Lagrangian isotopic to the diagonal. We show that in the case of a closed symplectic manifold with $π_2(M) = 0$, the canonical embedding of Ham(M) into L, f $\mapsto$ graph(f) is not an isometric embedding, although it preserves Hofer's length of smooth paths.
We prove that on certain closed symplectic manifolds a $C^1$-generic cyclic subgroup of the universal cover of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms is undistorted with respect to the Hofer metric.
Using a "Hodge decomposition" of symplectic isotopies on a compact symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, we construct a norm on the identity component in the group of all symplectic diffeomorphisms of $(M,ω)$ whose restriction to the group $Ham(M,ω)$ of hamiltonian diffeomorphisms is bounded from above by the Hofer norm. Moreover, $Ham(M,ω)$ is closed in $Symp(M,ω)$ equipped with the topology induced by the extended norm. We give an application to the $C^0$ symplectic topology. We also discuss extensions of Oh's spectral distance.
We give a different and simpler proof of a slightly modified (and weaker) variant of a recent theorem of Shelukhin extending Franks' "two-or-infinitely-many" theorem to Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms in higher dimensions and establishing a sufficiently general case of the Hofer-Zehnder conjecture. A few ingredients of our proof are common with Shelukhin's original argument, the key of which is Seidel's equivariant pair-of-pants product, but the new proof highlights a different aspect of the periodic orbit dynamics of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
In this paper, we generalize the result from L. Polterovich and E. Shelukhin's paper stating that Hofer distance from time-dependent Hamiltonian diffeomorphism to the set of p-th power Hamiltonian diffeomorphism can be arbitrarily large to hold in the product structure $Σ_g \times M$ for any closed symplectic manifold $M$ when $p$ is sufficiently large and $g \geq 4$. This implies that, on this product, Hofer distance can be arbitrarily large between time-dependent Hamiltonian diffeomorphism and autonomous Hamiltonian diffeomorphism. The basic tool we use is barcode and singular value decomposi…
In this paper we first apply the chain level Floer theory to the study of Hofer's geometry of Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group in the cases without quantum contribution: we prove that any quasi-autonomous Hamiltonian path on weakly exact symplectic manifolds or any autonomous Hamiltonian path on arbitrary symplectic manifolds is length minimizing in its homotopy class with fixed ends, as long as it has a fixed maximum and a fixed minimum which are not over-twisted and all of its contractible periodic orbits of period less than one are sufficiently $C^1$-small. Next we give a construction of ne…
Let M be a closed symplectic manifold, and let | | be a norm on the space of all smooth functions on M, which are zero-mean normalized with respect to the canonical volume form. We show that if | | is dominated from above by the L-Infinity-norm, and | | is invariant under the action of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, then it is also invariant under all volume preserving diffeomorphisms. We also prove that if | | is, additionally, not equivalent to the L-Infinity-norm, then the induced Finsler metric on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on M vanishes identically.
This paper meticulously revisit and study the flux geometry of any compact oriented manifold $(M; W)$. We generalize several well-known factorization results, exhibit some orbital conditions for the study of flux geometry, give a proof of the discreteness of the flux group for volume-preserving diffeomorphisms, show that any smooth path in the kernel of the flux is a vanishing flux path, and show that the kernel of the flux for volume-preserving diffeomorphisms is $C^1$closed inside the group of all volume-preserving diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity map:This recovers several results fr…
We prove that if a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed monotone symplectic manifold with semisimple quantum homology has more contractible fixed points, counted homologically, than the total dimension of the homology of the manifold, then it must have an infinite number of contractible periodic points. This constitutes a higher-dimensional homological generalization of a celebrated result of Franks from 1992, as conjectured by Hofer and Zehnder in 1994.
Hofer's metric is a bi-invariant metric on Hamiltonian diffeomorphism groups. Our main result shows that the topology induced from Hofer's metric is weaker than C^1-topology if the symplectic manifold is closed.
We resolve three longstanding questions related to the large scale geometry of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere, equipped with Hofer's metric. Namely: (1) we resolve the Kapovich-Polterovich question by showing that this group is not quasi-isometric to the real line; (2) more generally, we show that the kernel of Calabi over any proper open subset is unbounded; and (3) we show that the group of area and orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the two-sphere is not a simple group. We also obtain, as a corollary, that the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the…
In this note we consider the following conjecture: given any closed symplectic manifold $M$, there is a sufficiently small real positive number $ρ$ such that the open ball of radius $ρ$ in the Hofer metric centered at the identity on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $M$ is contractible, where the retraction takes place in that ball -- this is the strong version of the conjecture -- or inside the ambient group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $M$ -- this is the weak version of the conjecture. We prove several results that support that weak form of the conjecture.
For a class of Riemannian manifolds that include products of arbitrary compact manifolds with manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature on the one hand, or with certain positive-curvature examples such as spheres of dimension at least 3 and compact semisimple Lie groups on the other, we show that the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group of the cotangent bundle contains as subgroups infinite-dimensional normed vector spaces that are bi-Lipschitz embedded with respect to Hofer's metric; moreover these subgroups can be taken to consist of diffeomorphisms supported in an arbitrary neighborhood of t…
We show that commutators of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms may have arbitrarily large Hofer norm. The proposed technique is applicable to positive genus surfaces and their products. This gives partial answer to a question by McDuff and Polterovich.
We study the class of norms on the space of smooth functions on a closed symplectic manifold, which are invariant under the action of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. Our main result shows that any such norm that is continuous with respect to the $C^{\infty}$-topology, is dominated from above by the $L_{\infty}$-norm. As a corollary, we obtain that any bi-invariant Finsler pseudo-metric on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms that is generated by an invariant norm that satisfies the aforementioned continuity assumption, is either identically zero or equivalent to Hofer's metric.
Given a symplectic surface $(Σ, ω)$ of genus $g \ge 4$, we show that the free group with two generators embeds into every asymptotic cone of $(\mathrm{Ham}(Σ, ω), d_\mathrm{H})$, where $d_\mathrm{H}$ is the Hofer metric. The result stabilizes to products with symplectically aspherical manifolds.
In this paper, we construct infinitely many bi-invariant metrics on the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group and study their basic properties and corresponding generalizations of the Hofer inequality and Sikorav one.
We show, by an elementary and explicit construction, that the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of certain symplectic manifolds, endowed with Hofer's metric, contains subgroups quasi-isometric to Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension.
We show that the $L^{\infty}$-norm of the contact Hamiltonian induces a non-degenerate right-invariant metric on the group of contactomorphisms of any closed contact manifold. This contact Hofer metric is not left-invariant, but rather depends naturally on the choice of a contact form $α,$ whence its restriction to the subgroup of $α$-strict contactomorphisms is bi-invariant. The non-degeneracy of this metric follows from an analogue of the energy-capacity inequality. We show furthermore that this metric has infinite diameter in a number of cases by investigating its relations to previously de…
Stefan M$\ddot{\mathrm{u}}$ller posed the problem "Do Hofer's metrics on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphism and the one of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms (Hameomorphisms) correspond?". Let $(M,ω)$ be a compact exact symplectic manifold. We prove that the group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms is not a simple group if the positive answer of M$\ddot{\mathrm{u}}$ller's question holds . To prove this results, we introduce fragmented Hofer's norms on a normal subgroup of the group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms.
In this article we prove that for a smooth fiberwise convex Hamiltonian, the asymptotic Hofer distance from the identity gives a strict upper bound to the value at 0 of Mather's $β$ function, thus providing a negative answer to a question asked by K. Siburg in \cite{Siburg1998}. However, we show that equality holds if one considers the asymptotic distance defined in \cite{Viterbo1992}.
In this article we study the Hofer geometry of a compact Lie group $K$ which acts by Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on a symplectic manifold $M$. Generalized Hofer norms on the Lie algebra of $K$ are introduced and analyzed with tools from group invariant convex geometry, functional and matrix analysis. Several global results on the existence of geodesics and their characterization in finite dimensional Lie groups $K$ endowed with bi-invariant Finsler metrics are proved. We relate the conditions for being a geodesic in the group $K$ and in the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. These results a…
In this paper, we use Floer theory to study the Hofer length functional for paths of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms which are sufficiently short. In particular, the length minimizing properties of a short Hamiltonian path are related to the properties and number of its periodic orbits.
Chekanov showed that the Hofer norm on the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group of a geometrically bounded symplectic manifold induces a nondegenerate metric on the orbit of any compact Lagrangian submanifold under the group. In this paper we consider the orbits of more general submanifolds. We show that, for the Chekanov-Hofer pseudometric on the orbit of a closed submanifold to be a genuine metric, it is necessary for the submanifold to be coisotropic, and we show that this condition is sufficient under various additional geometric assumptions. At the other extreme, we show that the image of a g…
A Hamiltonian circle action on a compact symplectic manifold is known to be a closed geodesic with respect to the Hofer metric on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. If the momentum map attains its minimum or maximum at an isolated fixed point with isotropy weights not all equal to plus or minus one, then this closed geodesic can be deformed into a loop of shorter Hofer length. In this paper we give a lower bound for the possible amount of shortening, and we give a lower bound for the index ("number of independent shortening directions"). If the minimum or maximum is attained along a sub…
On any closed symplectic manifold we construct a path-connected neighborhood of the identity in the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group with the property that each Hamiltonian diffeomorphism in this neighborhood admits a Hofer and spectral length minimizing path to the identity. This neighborhood is open in the $C^1-$topology. The construction utilizes a continuation argument and chain level result in the Floer theory of Lagrangian intersections.
This paper continues to carry out a foundational study of Banyaga topologies of a closed symplectic manifold [3]. Our intension in writing this paper is to provide several symplectic analogues of some results found in the study of Hamiltonian dynamics. Especially, without appealing to the positivity of the symplectic displacement energy, we point out the impact of the $L^\infty$ version of Banyaga Hofer-like metric in the investigation of the symplectic nature of the $C^0-$limit of a sequence of symplectic maps. This result is the symplectic analogue of a result that was proved in Hofer-Zehnde…
We show that if (M,ω) is a closed symplectic manifold which admits a nontrivial Hamiltonian vector field all of whose contractible closed orbits are constant, then Hofer's metric on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of (M,ω) has infinite diameter, and indeed admits infinite-dimensional quasi-isometrically embedded normed vector spaces. A similar conclusion applies to Hofer's metric on various spaces of Lagrangian submanifolds, including those Hamiltonian-isotopic to the diagonal in M x M when M satisfies the above dynamical condition. To prove this, we use the properties of a Floer-theo…
In this paper, we prove the main conjecture on $g$-areas that was announced by the first author in 2004. It states that the $g$-area of any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism $ϕ$ is equal to the positive Hofer distance between $ϕ$ and the subspace of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms that can be expressed as a product of at most $g$ commutators.
We study the dynamics of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on convex symplectic manifolds. To this end we first establish the Piunikhin-Salamon-Schwarz isomorphism between the Floer homology and the Morse homology of such a manifold, and then use this isomorphism to construct a biinvariant metric on the group of compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms analogous to the metrics constructed by Viterbo and Schwarz. These tools are then applied to prove and reprove results in Hamiltonian dynamics. Our applications comprise a uniform lower estimate for the slow entropy of a compactly supported Ham…
In this paper, we first develop a mini-max theory of the action functional over the semi-infinite cycles via the chain level Floer homology theory and construct spectral invariants of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on arbitrary compact symplectic manifold (M,omega). To each given time dependent Hamiltonian function H and quantum cohomology class 0 not equal a element of QH^*(M), we associate an invariant rho(H;a) which varies continuously over H in the C^0-topology. This is obtained as the mini-max value over the semi-infinite cycles whose homology class is `dual' to the given quantum cohomology …
In this paper we consider the Arnold conjecture on the Lagrangian intersections of some closed Lagrangian submanifold of a closed symplectic manifold with its image of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism. We prove that if the Hofer's symplectic energy of the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism is less than a topology number defined by the Lagrangian submanifold, then the Arnold conjecture is true in the degenerated (non-transversal) case.
The paper provides a link between ergodic theory and symplectic topology. A classical notion of ergodic theory is a skew product map associated with a loop in a group of transformations. We study skew products which come from loops in the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold. Our main question is which homotopy classes of loops can be represented by strictly ergodic skew products. We prove an existence result, and find an obstruction which arises from Hofer's geometry on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
The group Hameo (M,ω) of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of a connected symplectic manifold (M,ω) was defined and studied in [7] and further in [6]. In these papers, the authors consistently used the L^{(1,\infty)}-Hofer norm (and not the L^\infty-Hofer norm) on the space of Hamiltonian paths (see below for the definitions). A justification for this choice was given in [7]. In this article we study the L^\infty-case. In view of the fact that the Hofer norm on the group Ham (M,ω) of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms does not depend on the choice of the L^{(1,\infty)}-norm vs. the L^\infty-norm [9], Y.-G. …
We construct an example of a non-trivial homogeneous quasimorphism on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the two and four dimensional quadric hypersurfaces which is continuous with respect to both the $C^0$-metric and the Hofer metric. This answers a variant of a question of Entov--Polterovich--Py which is one of the open problems listed in the monograph of McDuff--Salamon. Throughout the proof, we make extensive use of the idea of working with different coefficient fields in quantum cohomology rings. As a by-product of the arguments in the paper, we answer a question of Polterovich--…
The group $Ham(M,ω)$ of all Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ plays a central role in symplectic geometry. This group is endowed with the Hofer metric. In this paper we study two aspects of the geometry of $Ham(M,ω)$, in the case where $M$ is a closed surface of genus 2 or 3. First, we prove that there exist diffeomorphisms in $Ham(M,ω)$ arbitrarily far from being a $k$-th power, with respect to the metric, for any $k \geq 2$. This part generalizes previous work by Polterovich and Shelukhin. Second, we show that the free group on two generators embeds into the asympt…
In this note we classify some integrable invariant Sobolev metrics on the Abelian extension of the diffeomorphism group of the circle. We also derive a new two-component generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation. The system obtained appears to be unique bi-Hamiltonian flow on the coadiont obrit of $\Diff_+(S^1)\ltimes C^\infty(S^1)$ generalizes the Camassa-Holm flow on $\Vect(S^1)^*$.
In this short note we show how Dubrovin's integrable hierarchies, defined using the Gromov-Witten theory of a closed symplectic manifold, generalizes to Hamiltonian Floer theory. In particular, we show how the required generalization of the PSS isomorphism, relating Gromov-Witten theory and Hamiltonian Floer theory, can be constructed in the framework of Eliashberg-Givental-Hofer's symplectic field theory.
Let $Σ$ be a surface equipped with an area form. There is an long standing open question by Katok, which, in particular, asks whether every entropy-zero Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a surface lies in the $C^0$-closure of the set of integrable diffeomorphisms. A slightly weaker version of this question asks: ``Does every entropy-zero Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a surface lie in the $C^0$-closure of the set of autonomous diffeomorphisms?'' In this paper we answer in negative the later question. In particular, we show that on a surface $Σ$ the set of autonomous Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms is n…
We consider paths of Hamiltonian diffeomorphism preserving a given compact monotone Lagrangian in a symplectic manifold that extend to an $S^1$--Hamiltonian action. We compute the leading term of the associated Lagrangian Seidel element. We show that such paths minimize the Lagrangian Hofer length. Finally we apply these computations to Lagrangian uniruledness and to give a nice presentation of the Quantum cohomology of real lagrangians in Fano symplectic toric manifolds.
We show that the Ginzburg-Weinstein diffeomorphism $\mathfrak{u}(n)^* \to U(n)^*$ of Alekseev-Meinrenken admits a scaling tropical limit on an open dense subset of $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$. The target of the limit map is a product $\mathcal{C} \times T$, where $\mathcal{C}$ is the interior of a cone, $T$ is a torus, and $\mathcal{C} \times T$ carries an integrable system with natural action-angle coordinates. The pull-back of these coordinates to $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$ recovers the Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable system of Guillemin-Sternberg. As a by-product of our proof, we show that the Lagrangian tori …
