The group $Ham(M,ω)$ of all Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ plays a central role in symplectic geometry. This group is endowed with the Hofer metric. In this paper we study two aspects of the geometry of $Ham(M,ω)$, in the case where $M$ is a closed surface of genus 2 or 3. First, we prove that there exist diffeomorphisms in $Ham(M,ω)$ arbitrarily far from being a $k$-th power, with respect to the metric, for any $k \geq 2$. This part generalizes previous work by Polterovich and Shelukhin. Second, we show that the free group on two generators embeds into the asymptotic cone of $Ham(M,ω)$. This part extends previous work by Alvarez-Gavela et al. Both extensions are based on two results from geometric group theory regarding incompressibility of surface embeddings.
Let $Σ$ be a compact surface of genus $g \geq 1$ equipped with an area form. We construct eggbeater Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms which lie arbitrarily far in the Hofer metric from the set of autonomous Hamiltonians. This result is already known for $g \geq 2$ (our argument provides an alternative, very simple construction compared to previous publications) while the case $g = 1$ is new.
We classify global surfaces of section for the Reeb flow of the standard contact form on the 3-sphere, defining the Hopf fibration. As an application, we prove the degree-genus formula for complex projective curves, using an elementary degeneration process inspired by the language of holomorphic buildings in symplectic field theory.
In this paper, the symplectic genus for any 2-dimensional class in a 4-manifold admitting a symplectic structure is introduced, and its relation with the minimal genus is studied. It is used to describe which classes in rational and irrational ruled manifolds are realized by connected symplectic surfaces. In particular, we completely determine which classes with square at least -1 in such manifolds can be represented by embedded spheres. Moreover, based on a new characterization of the action of the diffeomorphism group on the intersection forms of a rational manifold, we are able to determine…
We prove relative versions of the symplectic capping theorem and sufficiency of Giroux's criterion for Stein fillability and use these to study the 4-genus of knots.
We construct an infinite family of homologous, non-isotopic, symplectic surfaces of any genus greater than one in a certain class of closed, simply connected, symplectic four-manifolds. Our construction is the first example of this phenomenon for surfaces of genus greater than one.
There are two types of $J$-holomorphic spheres in a symplectic manifold invariant under an anti-symplectic involution: those that have a fixed point locus and those that do not. The former are described by moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic disks, which are well studied in the literature. In this paper, we first study moduli spaces describing the latter and then combine the two types of moduli spaces to get a well-defined theory of counting real curves of genus 0. We use equivariant localization to show that these invariants (unlike the disk invariants) are essentially the same for the two (stan…
We characterize transversality, non-transversality properties on the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to a semipositive symplectic manifold of dimension 4, when GW([point],...,[point]) is enumerative. In particular, we show that the intersection theoretic property depends on the existence of a critical point on a stable map.
We explicitly produce symplectic genus-3 Lefschetz pencils (with base points), whose total spaces are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to rational surfaces CP^2 # p (-CP^2) for p= 7, 8, 9. We then give a new construction of an infinite family of symplectic Calabi-Yau surfaces with first Betti number b_1=2,3, along with a surface with b_1=4 homeomorphic to the 4-torus. These are presented as the total spaces of symplectic genus-3 Lefschetz pencils we construct via new positive factorizations in the mapping class group of a genus-3 surface. Our techniques in addition allow us to answer in the …
We introduce the $2$-nodal spherical deformation of certain singular fibers of genus $2$ fibrations, and use such deformations to construct various examples of simply connected minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds with small topology. More specifically, we construct new exotic minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#6({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#7({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, and $3{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#k({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$ for $k=16, 17, 18, 19$ using combinations of such deformations, symplectic blowups, and (…
In this note, genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants are reviewed and then applied in some examples of dimension four and six. It is also proved that the use of genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants in the class of embedded $J$-holomorphic curves to distinguish the deformation types of symplectic structures on a smooth $6$-manifold is restricted in the sense that they can not distinguish the symplectic structures on $X_1\times S^2$ and $X_2\times S^2$ for two minimal, simply connected, symplectic $4$-manifolds $X_1$ and $X_2$ with $b_2^+(X_1)>1$ and $b_2^+(X_2)>1$.
Following a question of F. Le Roux, we consider a system of invariants $l_A : H_1(M; \mathbb{Z})\to\mathbb{R}$ of a symplectic surface $M$. These invariants compute the minimal Hofer energy needed to translate a disk of area $A$ along a given homology class and can be seen as a symplectic analogue of the Riemannian length spectrum. When $M$ has genus zero we also construct Hofer- and $C_0$-continuous quasimorphisms $Ham(M) \to H_1(M;\mathbb{R})$ that compute trajectories of periodic non-displaceable disks.
We prove that any genus-2 Lefschetz fibration without reducible fibers and with ``transitive monodromy'' is holomorphic. The latter condition comprises all cases where the number of singular fibers is not congruent to 0 modulo 40. An auxiliary statement of independent interest is the holomorphicity of symplectic surfaces in S^2-bundles over S^2, of relative degree up to 7 over the base, and of symplectic surfaces in CP^2 of degree up to 17.
We study pseudoholomorphic curves in symplectic quotients as adiabatic limits of solutions of a system of nonlinear first order elliptic partial differential equations in the ambient symplectic manifold. The symplectic manifold carries a Hamiltonian group action. The equations involve the Cauchy-Riemann operator over a Riemann surface, twisted by a connection, and couple the curvature of the connection with the moment map. Our main theorem asserts that the genus zero invariants of Hamiltonian group actions defined by these equations are related to the genus zero Gromov--Witten invariants of th…
This is a paper devoted to the symplectic birational geometry program where many basic notions are defined in terms of genus 0 GW invariants. We show that the existence of a positive uniruled symplectic divisor often implies that the ambient manifold has a nonzero uniruled genus 0 GW invariant, hence is uniruled as well. This confirms a part of the dichotomy on uniruled symplectic divisors. In addition, it gives a rather general construction of uniruled symplectic manifolds, generalizing some beautiful results of McDuff.
In this article, we construct a genus-$0$ or genus-$1$ positive allowable Lefschetz fibration on any minimal symplectic filling of the link of non-cyclic quotient surface singularities. As a byproduct, we also show that any minimal symplectic filling of the link of quotient surface singularities can be obtained from a sequence of rational blowdowns from its minimal resolution.
Given a symplectic surface $(Σ, ω)$ of genus $g \ge 4$, we show that the free group with two generators embeds into every asymptotic cone of $(\mathrm{Ham}(Σ, ω), d_\mathrm{H})$, where $d_\mathrm{H}$ is the Hofer metric. The result stabilizes to products with symplectically aspherical manifolds.
A surgery of a real symplectic manifold $X_{\mathbb R}$ along a real Lagrangian sphere $S$ is a modification of the symplectic and real structure on $X_{\mathbb R}$ in a neigborhood of $S$. Genus 0 Welschinger invariants of two real symplectic $4$-manifolds differing by such a surgery have been related in a previous work in collaboration with N. Puignau. In the present paper, we explore some particular situations where these general formulas greatly simplify. As an application, we complete the computation of genus 0 Welschinger invariants of all del~Pezzo surfaces, and of all $\mathbb R$-minim…
Using the Fredholm setup of [12], we study genus zero (and higher) relative Gromov-Witten invariants with maximum tangency of symplectic log Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In particular, we give a short proof of [23, Conjecture 6.2] that expresses these invariants in terms of certain integral invariants by considering generic almost complex structures to obtain a geometric count. We also revisit the localization calculation of the multiple-cover contributions in [23, Proposition 6.1] and recalculate a few terms differently to provide more details and illustrate the computation of deformation/obstructio…
In a previous paper we described a natural closed subset of the moduli space of stable genus-one J-holomorphic maps into a symplectic manifold X. In this paper we generalize the definition of the main component to moduli spaces of perturbed, in a restricted way, J-holomorphic maps. This generalization implies that the main component, just like the entire moduli space, carries a virtual fundamental class and can be used to define symplectic invariants. These truly genus-one invariants constitute part of the standard genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants, which arise from the entire moduli space. T…
Motivated by observations in physics, mirror symmetry is the concept that certain manifolds come in pairs $X$ and $Y$ such that the complex geometry on $X$ mirrors the symplectic geometry on $Y$. It allows one to deduce symplectic information about $Y$ from known complex properties of $X$. Strominger-Yau-Zaslow arXiv:hep-th/9606040 described how such pairs arise geometrically as torus fibrations with the same base and related fibers, known as SYZ mirror symmetry. Kontsevich arXiv:alg-geom/9411018 conjectured that a complex invariant on $X$ (the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves) sho…
Let E be the total space of a locally trivial torus bundle over the surface Σ_g of genus g>1. Using the Seiberg--Witten theory and spectral sequences we prove that E carries a symplectic structure if and only if the homology class of the fiber [T^2] is nonzero in H_2(E,R).
In this paper, we propose a definition of genus one real Gromov-Witten invariants for certain symplectic manifolds with real a structure, including Calabi-Yau threefolds, and use equivariant localization to calculate certain genus one real invariants of the projective space. For this definition, we combine three moduli spaces corresponding to three possible types of involutions on a symplectic torus, by gluing them along common boundaries, to get a moduli space without codimension-one boundary and then study orientation of the total space. Modulo a technical conjectural lemma, we can prove tha…
We express the genus-two fixed-complex-structure enumerative invariants of P^2 and P^3 in terms of the genus-zero enumerative invariants. The approach is to relate each genus-two fixed-complex-structure enumerative invariant to the corresponding symplectic invariant.
We study the symplectic geometry of the SU(2)-representation variety of the compact oriented surface of genus 2. We use the Goldman flows to identify subsets of the moduli space with corresponding subsets of $\mathbb P^3(\mathbb C)$. We also define and study two antisymplectic involutions on the moduli space and their fixed point sets.
We prove that there exists no a priori bound on the Euler characteristic of a closed symplectic 4-manifold coming solely from the genus of a compatible Lefschetz pencil on it, nor is there a similar bound for Stein fillings of a contact 3-manifold coming from the genus of a compatible open book --- except possibly for a few low genera cases. To obtain our results, we produce the first examples of factorizations of a boundary parallel Dehn twist as arbitrarily long products of positive Dehn twists along non-separating curves on a fixed surface with boundary. This solves an open problem posed by…
The construction of manifold structures and fundamental classes on the (compactified) moduli spaces appearing in Gromov-Witten theory is a long-standing problem. Up until recently, most successful approaches involved the imposition of topological constraints like semi-positivity on the underlying symplectic manifold to deal with this situation. One conceptually very appealing approach that removed most of these restrictions is the approach by K. Cieliebak and K. Mohnke via complex hypersurfaces, [CM07]. In contrast to other approaches using abstract perturbation theory, it has the advantage th…
Hirzebruch surfaces provide an excellent example to underline the fact that in general symplectic manifolds, Gromov-Witten invariants might well count curves in the boundary components of the moduli space. We use this example to explain in detail that the counting argument given by Batyrev in "Quantum cohomology rings of toric manifolds" (Asterisque 218:9-34, 1993) does not work.
In this paper, we study the algebraic symplectic geometry of the singular moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of degree $0$ and rank $n$ on a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$. In particular, we prove that such moduli spaces are symplectic singularities, in the sense of Beauville [Bea00], and admit a projective symplectic resolution if and only if $g=1$ or $(g, n)=(2,2)$. These results are an application of a recent paper by Bellamy and Schedler [BS16] via the so-called Isosingularity Theorem.
We show that hyperelliptic symplectic Lefschetz fibrations are symplectically birational to two-fold covers of rational ruled surfaces, branched in a symplectically embedded surface. This reduces the classification of genus 2 fibrations to the classification of certain symplectic submanifolds in rational ruled surfaces.
We study symplectic rigidity phenomena for fibers in cotangent bundles of Riemann surfaces. Our main result can be seen as a generalization to open Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus of work of Eliashberg and Polterovich on the Nearby Lagrangian Conjecture for $T^* \mathbb{R}^2$. As a corollary, we answer a strong version in dimension $2n=4$ of a question of Eliashberg about linking of Lagrangian disks in $T^* \mathbb{R}^n$, which was previously answered by Ekholm and Smith in dimensions $2n \geq 8$.
For smooth projective G-varieties, we equate the gauged Gromov-Witten invariants for sufficiently small area and genus zero with the invariant part of equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants. As an application we deduce a gauged version of abelianization for Gromov-Witten invariants. In the symplectic setting, we prove that any sequence of genus zero symplectic vortices with vanishing area has a subsequence that converges after gauge transformation to a holomorphic map with zero average moment map.
Modulo trivial exceptions, we show that smoothly nontrivial symplectic sums of symplectic 4-manifolds along surfaces of positive genus are never rational or ruled, and we enumerate each case in which they have Kodaira dimension zero (i.e., are blowups of symplectic 4-manifolds with torsion canonical class). In particular, a symplectic four-manifold of Kodaira dimension zero arises by such a surgery only if it is diffeomorphic to a blowup either of the K3 surface, the Enriques surface, or a member of a particular family of T^2-bundles over T^2 each having b_1=2.
To distinguish the contributions to the generalized Hurwitz number of the source Riemann surface with different genus, we define the genus expanded cut-and-join operators by observing carefully the symplectic surgery and the gluing formulas of the relative GW-invariants. As an application, we get some differential equations for the generating functions of the generalized Hurwitz numbers for the source Riemann surface with different genus, thus we can express the generating functions in terms of the genus expanded cut-and-join operators.
We describe the minimal number of critical points and the minimal number $s$ of singular fibres for a non isotrivial fibration of a surface $S$ over a curve $B$ of genus $1$, constructing a fibration with $s=1$ and irreducible singular fibre with $4$ nodes. Then we consider the associated factorizations in the mapping class group and in the symplectic group. We describe explicitly which products of transvections on homologically independent and disjoint circles are a commutator in the Symplectic group $Sp (2g, \mathbb{Z})$.
We prove that any symplectic 4-manifold which is not a rational or ruled surface, after sufficiently many blow-ups, admits an arbitrary number of nonisomorphic Lefschetz fibrations of the same genus which cannot be obtained from one another via Luttinger surgeries. This generalizes results of Park and Yun who constructed pairs of nonisomorphic Lefschetz fibrations on knot surgered elliptic surfaces. In turn, we prove that there are monodromy factorizations of Lefschetz pencils which have the same characteristic numbers but cannot be obtained from each other via partial conjugations by Dehn twi…
The symplectic isotopy conjecture states that every smooth symplectic surface in $CP^2$ is symplectically isotopic to a complex algebraic curve. Progress began with Gromov's pseudoholomorphic curves [Gro85], and progressed further culminating in Siebert and Tian's proof of the conjecture up to degree 17 [ST05], but further progress has stalled. In this article we provide a new direction of attack on this problem. Using a solution to a nodal symplectic isotopy problem we guide model symplectic isotopies of smooth surfaces. This results in an equivalence between the smooth symplectic isotopy pro…
The well-known fact that any genus $g$ symplectic Lefschetz fibration $ X^{4}\to S^{2}$ is given by a word that is equal to the identity element in the mapping class group and each of whose elements is given by a positive Dehn twist, provides an intimate relationship between words in the mapping class group and 4-manifolds that are realized as symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. In this article we provide new words in the mapping class group, hence new symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. We also compute the signatures of those symplectic Lefschetz fibrations.
This article describes the use of symplectic cut-and-paste methods to compute Gromov-Witten invariants. Our focus is on recent advances extending these methods to Kahler surfaces with geometric genus p_g>0, for which the usual GW invariants vanish for most homology classes. This involves extending the Splitting Formula and the Symplectic Sum Formula to the family GW invariants introduced by the first author. We present applications to the invariants of elliptic surfaces and to the Yau-Zaslow Conjecture. In both cases the results agree with the conjectures of algebraic geometers and yield a pro…
Let X_1, X_2 be symplectic 4-manifolds containing symplectic surfaces F_1,F_2 of identical positive genus and opposite squares. Let Z denote the symplectic sum of X_1 and X_2 along the F_k. Using relative Gromov--Witten theory, we determine precisely when the symplectic 4-manifold Z is minimal (i.e., cannot be blown down); in particular, we prove that Z is minimal unless either: one of the X_k contains a (-1)-sphere disjoint from F_k; or one of the X_k admits a ruling with F_k as a section. As special cases, this proves a conjecture of Stipsicz asserting the minimality of fiber sums of Lefsche…
In [2], the first author constructed the first known examples of exotic minimal symplectic $\CP#5\CPb$ and minimal symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to $3\CP#7\CPb$. The construction in [2] uses Y. Matsumoto's genus two Lefschetz fibrations on $M = \mathbb{T}^{2}\times \mathbb{S}^{2} #4\CPb$ over $\mathbb{S}^2$ along with the fake symplectic $\mathbb{S}^{2} \times \mathbb{S}^{2}$ construction given in [1]. The main goal in this paper is to generalize the construction in [2] using the higher genus versions of Matsumoto's fibration constructed by Mustafa Korkmaz an…
We compute the genus one family Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces for non-primitive classes. These calculations verify Gottsche-Yau-Zaslow formula for non-primitive classes with index two. Our approach is to use the genus two topological recursion formula and the symplectic sum formula to establish relationships among various generating functions.
We prove that if a contact 3-manifold admits an open book decomposition of genus 0, a certain intersection pattern cannot appear in the homology of any of its minimal symplectic fillings, and moreover, fillings cannot contain symplectic surfaces of positive genus. Applying these obstructions to canonical contact structures on links of normal surface singularities, we show that links of isolated singularities of surfaces in the complex 3-space are planar only in the case of $A_n$-singularities. In general, we characterize completely planar links of normal surface singularities (in terms of thei…
The aim of the present paper is to provide a new aspect of the $p$-adic Teichmüller theory established by S. Mochizuki. We study the symplectic geometry of the $p$-adic formal stacks $\widehat{\mathcal{M}}_{g, \mathbb{Z}_p}$ (= the moduli classifying $p$-adic formal curves of fixed genus $g>1$) and $\widehat{\mathcal{S}}_{g, \mathbb{Z}_p}$ (= the moduli classifying $p$-adic formal curves of genus $g$ equipped with an indigenous bundle). A major achievement in the (classical) $p$-adic Teichmüller theory is the construction of the locus $\widehat{\mathcal{N}}_{g, \mathbb{Z}_p}^{\mathrm{ord}}$ in…
Let X be a minimal surface of general type with positive geometric genus ($b_+ > 1$) and let $K^2$ be the square of its canonical class. Building on work of Khodorovskiy and Rana, we prove that if X develops a Wahl singularity of length $\ell$ in a Q-Gorenstein degeneration, then $\ell \leq 4K^2 + 7$. This improves on the current best-known upper bound due to Lee ($\ell \leq 400(K^2)^4$). Our bound follows from a stronger theorem constraining symplectic embeddings of certain rational homology balls in surfaces of general type. In particular, we show that if the rational homology ball $B_{p,1}$…
In earlier work we have shown that the moduli space $N$ of flat connections for the (trivial) $\roman{SU(2)}$-bundle on a closed surface of genus $\ell \geq 2$ inherits a structure of stratified symplectic space with two connected strata $N_Z$ and $N_{(T)}$ and $2^{2\ell}$ isolated points. In this paper we show that, close to each point of $N_{(T)}$, the space $N$ and its Poisson algebra look like a product of $\bold C^{\ell}$ endowed with the standard symplectic Poisson structure with the reduced space and Poisson algebra of the system of $(\ell-1)$ particles in the plane with total angular m…
Let $\hat{G}$ be a group and $G$ its normal subgroup. In this paper, we study $\hat{G}$-invariant quasimorphisms on $G$ which appear in symplectic geometry and low dimensional topology. As its application, we prove the non-existence of a section of the flux homomorphism on closed surfaces of higher genus. We also prove that Py's Calabi quasimorphism and Entov-Polterovich's partial Calabi quasimorphism are non-extendable to the group of symplectomorphisms. We show that Py's Calabi quasimorphism is the unique non-extendable quasimorphism to some group.
We prove that any symplectic Fano $6$-manifold $M$ with a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action is simply connected and satisfies $c_1 c_2(M)=24$. This is done by showing that the fixed submanifold $M_{\min}\subseteq M$ on which the Hamiltonian attains its minimum is diffeomorphic to either a del Pezzo surface, a $2$-sphere or a point. In the case when $\dim(M_{\min})=4$, we use the fact that symplectic Fano $4$-manifolds are symplectomorphic to del Pezzo surfaces. The case when $\dim(M_{\min})=2$ involves a study of $6$-dimensional Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds with $M_{\min}$ diffeomorphic to a surface of …
