In this article, we study the Calabi invariant on the unit disk usually defined on compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the open disk. In particular we extend the Calabi invariant to the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of the closed disk which preserves the standard symplectic form. We also compute the Calabi invariant for some diffeomorphisms of the disk which satisfies some rigidity hypothesis.
We prove that the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere admits a non-trivial homogeneous quasimorphism to the real numbers with the following property. Its value on any diffeomorphism supported in a sufficiently small open subset of the sphere equals to the Calabi invariant of the diffeomorphism. This result extends to more general symplectic manifolds: If the symplectic manifold is monotone and its quantum homology algebra is semi-simple we construct a similar quasimorphism on the universal cover of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
In [Hut16], Hutchings uses embedded contact homology to show the following for area-preserving disc diffeomorphisms that are a rotation near the boundary of the disc: If the asymptotic mean action on the boundary is greater than the Calabi invariant, then the infimum of the mean action of the periodic points is less than or equal to the Calabi invariant. In this article, we extend this to all area-preserving disc diffeomorphisms. Our strategy is to extend the diffeomorphism to a larger disc with nice properties and apply Hutchings' theorem. As an application, we show that the Calabi invariant …
Given an area-preserving diffeomorphism of the closed unit disk which is a rotation near the boundary, one can naturally define an "action" function on the disk which agrees with the rotation number on the boundary. The Calabi invariant of the diffeomorphism is the average of the action function over the disk. Given a periodic orbit of the diffeomorphism, its "mean action" is defined to be the average of the action function over the orbit. We show that if the Calabi invariant is less than the boundary rotation number, then the infimum over periodic orbits of the mean action is less than or equ…
An area-preserving diffeomorphism of an annulus has an "action function" which measures how the diffeomorphism distorts curves. The average value of the action function over the annulus is known as the Calabi invariant of the diffeomorphism, while the average value of the action function over a periodic orbit of the diffeomorphism is the mean action of the orbit. If an area-preserving annulus diffeomorphism is a rotation near the boundary of the annulus, and if its Calabi invariant is less than the maximum boundary value of the action function, then we show that the infimum of the mean action …
Given a compactly supported area-preserving diffeomorphism of the disk, we prove an integral formula relating the asymptotic action to the asymptotic winding number. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of Fathi's integral formula for the Calabi homomorphism on the disk.
In this paper, we give two elementary constructions of homogeneous quasi-morphisms defined on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of certain closed connected symplectic manifolds (or on its universal cover). The first quasi-morphism, denoted by $\calabi\_{S}$, is defined on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a closed oriented surface $S$ of genus greater than 1. This construction is motivated by a question of M. Entov and L. Polterovich. If $U\subset S$ is a disk or an annulus, the restriction of $\calabi\_{S}$ to the subgroup of diffeomorphisms which are the time one map of a Ha…
Consider a sequence of compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $ϕ_k$ of an exact symplectic manifold, all of which are "graphical" in the sense that their graphs are identified by a Darboux-Weinstein chart with the image of a one-form. We show by an elementary argument that if the $ϕ_k$ $C^0$-converge to the identity then their Calabi invariants converge to zero. This generalizes a result of Oh, in which the ambient manifold was the two-disk and an additional assumption was made on the Hamiltonians generating the $ϕ_k$. We discuss connections to the open problem of whether the Calabi h…
We prove that the autonomous norm on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the two-dimensional torus is unbounded. We provide explicit examples of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms with arbitrarily large autonomous norm. For the proofs we construct quasimorphisms on $Ham(T^2)$ and some of them are Calabi.
In the setting of geometric quantization, we associate to any prequantum bundle automorphism a unitary map of the corresponding quantum space. These maps are controlled in the semiclassical limit by two invariants of symplectic topology: the Calabi morphism and a quasimorphism of the universal cover of the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group introduced by Entov, Py, Shelukhin.
We show the existence of Calabi quasimorphisms on the universal covering of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a monotone coadjoint orbit of a compact Lie group. We show that this result follows from positivity results of Gromov-Witten invariants and the fact that the quantum product of Schubert classes can never be zero.
In this work we construct Calabi quasi-morphisms on the universal cover of the group Ham(M) of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms for some non-monotone symplectic manifolds. This complements a result by Entov and Polterovich which applies in the monotone case. Moreover, in contrast to their work, we show that these quasi-morphisms descend to non-trivial homomorphisms on the fundamental group of Ham(M).
Let (Σ, ω) be a compact Riemann surface with constant curvature c. In this work, we proved that the mean curvature flow of a given Hamiltonian diffeomorphism on Σ provides a smooth path in Ham(Σ), the group of all Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of Σ. This result gives a proof, in the case of graph of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms to the conjecture of Thomas and Yau asserting that the mean curvature flow of a compact embedded Lagrangian submanifold S with zero Maslov class in a Calabi- Yau manifolds M exists for all time and converges smoothly to a special Lagrangian submanifold in the Hamiltonian i…
We resolve three longstanding questions related to the large scale geometry of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere, equipped with Hofer's metric. Namely: (1) we resolve the Kapovich-Polterovich question by showing that this group is not quasi-isometric to the real line; (2) more generally, we show that the kernel of Calabi over any proper open subset is unbounded; and (3) we show that the group of area and orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the two-sphere is not a simple group. We also obtain, as a corollary, that the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the…
Let Σ_g be a closed orientable surface let Diff_0(Σ_g; area) be the identity component of the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of Σ_g. In this work we present an extension of Gambaudo-Ghys construction to the case of a closed hyperbolic surface Σ_g, i.e. we show that every non-trivial homogeneous quasi-morphism on the braid group on n strings of Σ_g defines a non-trivial homogeneous quasi-morphism on the group Diff_0(Σ_g; area). As a consequence we give another proof of the fact that the space of homogeneous quasi-morphisms on Diff_0(Σ_g; area) is infinite dimensional. Let Ham(Σ_g) be …
We consider Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $ϕ$ of the unit cotangent bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which extend to Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $T^*M$ equal to the time-1-map of the geodesic flow for $|p| \ge 1$. For such diffeomorphisms we establish uniform lower bounds for the fiberwise volume growth of $ϕ$ which were previously known for geodesic flows and which depend only on $(M,g)$ or on the homotopy type of $M$. More precisely, we show that for each $q \in M$ the volume growth of the unit ball in $T_q^*M$ under the iterates of $ϕ$ is at least linear if $M$ is rationall…
Let $D^2$ be the open unit disc in the Euclidean plane and let $G:= Diff(D2; area)$ be the group of smooth compactly supported area-preserving diffeomorphisms of $D^2$. We investigate the properties of G endowed with the autonomous metric. In particular, we construct a bi-Lipschitz homomorphism $Z^k \rightarrow G$ of a finitely generated free abelian group of an arbitrary rank. We also show that the space of homogeneous quasi-morphisms vanishing on all autonomous diffeomorphisms in the above group is infinite dimensional.
In this note the interrelations between several natural morphisms on the $π_1$ of groups of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms are investigated. As an application, the equality of the (non-linear) Maslov index of loops of quantomorphisms of prequantizations of $\C P^n$ and the Calabi-Weinstein invariant is shown, settling affirmatively a conjecture by A. Givental. We also prove the proportionality of the mixed action-Maslov morphism and the Futaki invariant on loops of Hamiltonian biholomorphisms of Fano Kahler manifolds, as suggested by C. Woodward. Finally, a family of generalized action-Maslov inv…
In this article, we study conjectures of Sandon on the minimal number of translated points in the special case of the unit tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold. We restrict ourselves to contactomorphisms of $SM$ that lift diffeomorphisms of $M$ homotopic to identity. We prove that there exist sequences $(p_n,t_n)$ where $p_n$ is a translated point of time-shift $t_n$ with $t_n\to+\infty$ for a large class of manifolds. We also prove Morse estimates on the number of translated points in the case of Zoll Riemannian manifolds.
