We develop eigenvalue estimates for the Laplacians on discrete and metric graphs using different types of boundary conditions at the vertices of the metric graph. Via an explicit correspondence of the equilateral metric and discrete graph spectrum (also in the ``exceptional'' values of the metric graph corresponding to the Dirichlet spectrum) we carry over these estimates from the metric graph Laplacian to the discrete case. We apply the results to covering graphs and present examples where the covering graph Laplacians have spectral gaps.
In this article, we develop a perturbative technique to construct families of non-isomorphic discrete graphs which are isospectral for the standard (also called normalised) Laplacian and its signless version. We use vertex contractions as a graph perturbation and spectral bracketing with auxiliary graphs which have certain eigenvalues with high multiplicity. There is no need to know explicitly the eigenvalues or eigenfunctions of the corresponding graphs. We illustrate the method by presenting several families of examples of isospectral graphs including fuzzy complete bipartite graphs and subd…
The aim of this article is to give a simple geometric condition that guarantees the existence of spectral gaps of the discrete Laplacian on periodic graphs. For proving this, we analyse the discrete magnetic Laplacian (DML) on the finite quotient and interpret the vector potential as a Floquet parameter. We develop a procedure of virtualising edges and vertices that produces matrices whose eigenvalues (written in ascending order and counting multiplicities) specify the bracketing intervals where the spectrum of the Laplacian is localised. We prove Higuchi-Shirai's conjecture for Z-periodic tre…
In this paper, we introduce a new family of functions to construct Schrödinger operators with embedded eigenvalues. This particularly allows us to construct discrete Schrödinger operators with arbitrary prescribed sets of eigenvalues.
We consider the family $$ \hat {\bf h}_μ:=\hat\varDelta\hat \varDelta - μ\hat {\bf v},\qquadμ\in\mathbb{R}, $$ of discrete Schrödinger-type operators in one-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}$, where $\hat \varDelta$ is the discrete Laplacian and $\hat{\bf v}$ is of zero-range. We prove that for any $μ\ne0$ the discrete spectrum of $\hat {\bf h}_μ$ is a singleton $\{e(μ)\},$ and $e(μ)<0$ for $μ>0$ and $e(μ)>4$ for $μ<0.$ Moreover, we study the properties of $e(μ)$ as a function of $μ,$ in particular, we find the asymptotics of $e(μ)$ as $μ\searrow0$ and $μ\nearrow0.$
We consider a quantum particle moving in the one dimensional lattice Z and interacting with a indefinite sign external field v. We prove that the associated discrete Schroedinger operator H can have one or two eigenvalues, situated as below the bottom of the essential spectrum, as well as above its top. Moreover, we show that the operator H can have two eigenvalues outside of the essential spectrum such that one of them is situated below the bottom of the essential spectrum, and other one above its top.
We consider the family $\hat h_μ:=\hat\varDelta\hat \varDelta - μ\hat v,$ $μ\in\mathbb{R}, $ of discrete Schrödinger-type operators in $d$-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, where $\hat \varDelta$ is the discrete Laplacian and $\hat v$ is of rank-one. We prove that there exist coupling constant thresholds $μ_o,μ^o\ge0$ such that for any $μ\in[-μ^o,μ_o]$ the discrete spectrum of $\hat h_μ$ is empty and for any $μ\in \mathbb{R}\setminus[-μ^o,μ_o]$ the discrete spectrum of $\hat h_μ$ is a singleton $\{e(μ)\},$ and $e(μ)<0$ for $μ>μ_o$ and $e(μ)>4d^2$ for $μ<-μ^o.$ Moreover, we study the asymptot…
We provide quantitative estimates on the location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Dirac operators with complex $\ell^p$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. As a corollary, subsets of the essential spectrum free of embedded eigenvalues are determined for small $\ell^1$-potential. Further possible improvements and sharpness of the obtained spectral bounds are also discussed.
The discrete Schrödinger equation with the Dirichlet boundary condition is considered on a half-line lattice when the potential is real valued and compactly supported. The inverse problem of recovery of the potential from the so-called transmission eigenvalues is analyzed. The Marchenko method and the Gel'fand-Levitan method are used to solve the inverse problem uniquely, except in one "unusual" case where the sum of the transmission eigenvalues is equal to a certain integer related to the support of the potential. It is shown that in the unusual case there may be a unique solution correspondi…
We prove localization and probabilistic bounds on the minimum level spacing for the Anderson tight-binding model on the lattice in any dimension, with single-site potential having a discrete distribution taking N values, with N large.
Under minimal regularity conditions on the photon dispersion and the coupling function, we prove that the spin-boson model with two massless photons in $\mathbb{R}^d$ cannot have more than two bound state energies whenever the coupling strength is sufficiently strong.
We study the spectrum of the Robin Laplacian with a complex Robin parameter $α$ on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$. We start by establishing a number of properties of the corresponding operator, such as generation properties, local analytic dependence of the eigenvalues and eigenspaces on $α\in \mathbb C$, and basis properties of the eigenfunctions. Our focus, however, is on bounds and asymptotics for the eigenvalues as functions of $α$: we start by providing estimates on the numerical range of the associated operator, which lead to new eigenvalue bounds even in the case $α\in \mathbb R$. For t…
In this paper, inequalities among eigenvalues of different self-adjoint discrete Sturm-Liouville problems are established. For a fixed discrete Sturm-Liouville equation, inequalities among eigenvalues for different boundary conditions are given. For a fixed boundary condition, inequalities among eigenvalues for different equations are given. These results are obtained by applying continuity and discontinuity of the n-th eigenvalue function, monotonicity in some direction of the n-th eigenvalue function, which were given in our previous papers, and natural loops in the space of boundary conditi…
In this paper, we consider discrete Schrödinger operators of the form, \begin{equation*} (Hu)(n)= u({n+1})+u({n-1})+V(n)u(n). \end{equation*} We view $H$ as a perturbation of the free operator $H_0$, where $(H_0u)(n)= u({n+1})+u({n-1})$. For $H_0$ (no perturbation), $σ_{\rm ess}(H_0)=σ_{\rm ac}(H)=[-2,2]$ and $H_0$ does not have eigenvalues embedded into $(-2,2)$. It is an interesting and important problem to identify the perturbation such that the operator $H_0+V$ has one eigenvalue (finitely many eigenvalues or countable eigenvalues) embedded into $(-2,2)$. We introduce the {\it almost sign …
This paper is concerned with dependence of discrete Sturm-Liouville eigenvalues on problems. Topologies and geometric structures on various spaces of such problems are firstly introduced. Then, relationships between the analytic and geometric multiplicities of an eigenvalue are discussed. It is shown that all problems sufficiently close to a given problem have eigenvalues near each eigenvalue of the given problem. So, all the simple eigenvalues live in so-called continuous simple eigenvalue branches over the space of problems, and all the eigenvalues live in continuous eigenvalue branches over…
A discrete analog is considered for the inverse transmission eigenvalue problem, having applications in acoustics. We provide a well-posed inverse problem statement, develop a constructive procedure for solving this problem, prove uniqueness of solution, global solvability, local solvability, and stability. Our approach is based on the reduction of the discrete transmission eigenvalue problem to a linear system with polynomials of the spectral parameter in the boundary condition.
Following the method of Froese and Herbst, we show for a class of potentials V that an eigenfunction $ψ$ with eigenvalue E of the multi-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator H = $Δ$ + V on \mathbb{Z}^d decays sub-exponentially whenever the Mourre estimate holds at E. In the one-dimensional case we further show that this eigenfunction decays exponentially with a rate at least of cosh^{--1}((E -- 2)/($θ$\_E -- 2)), where $θ$\_E is the nearest threshold of H located between E and 2. A consequence of the latter result is the absence of eigenvalues between 2 and the nearest thresholds above and…
In this work, we investigate the discrete spectrum generated by complex matrix-valued perturbations for a class of 2D and 3D Pauli operators with nonconstant magnetic fields. We establish a simple criterion for the potentials to produce discrete spectrum near the low ground energy of the operators. Moreover, in case of creation of nonreal eigenvalues, this criterion specifies also their location.
This paper is concerned with continuous dependence of the n-th eigenvalue on self-adjoint discrete Sturm-Liouville problems. The n-th eigenvalue is considered as a function in the space of the problems. A necessary and sufficient condition for all the eigenvalue functions to be continuous and several properties of the eigenvalue functions in a set of the space of the problems are given. They play an important role in the study of continuous dependence of the n-th eigenvalue function on the problems. Continuous dependence of the n-th eigenvalue function on the equations and on the boundary cond…
In this paper, we show that the analytic and geometric multiplicities of an eigenvalue of a class of singular linear Hamiltonian systems are equal, where both endpoints are in the limit circle cases. The proof is fundamental and is given for both continuous and discrete Hamiltonian systems. The method used in this paper also works for both endpoints are regular, or one endpoint is regular and the other is in the limit circle case.
Let $H_0$ be a discrete periodic Schrödinger operator on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$: $$H_0=-Δ+V,$$ where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $V: \mathbb{Z}^d\to \mathbb{C}$ is periodic. We prove that for any $d\geq3$, the Fermi variety at every energy level is irreducible (modulo periodicity). For $d=2$, we prove that the Fermi variety at every energy level except for the average of the potential is irreducible (modulo periodicity) and the Fermi variety at the average of the potential has at most two irreducible components (modulo periodicity). This is sharp since for $d=2$ and a constant potential …
In this paper, we characterize singularity of the $n$-th eigenvalue of self-adjoint discrete Sturm-Liouville problems in any dimension. For a fixed Sturm-Liouville equation, we completely characterize singularity of the $n$-th eigenvalue. For a fixed boundary condition, unlike in the continuous case, the $n$-th eigenvalue exhibits jump phenomena and we describe the singularity under a non-degenerate assumption. Compared with the continuous case in [8, 12], the singular set here is involved heavily with coefficients of the Sturm-Liouville equations. This, along with arbitrariness of the dimensi…
The aim of this work is to explore the discrete spectrum generated by complex perturbations in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^3,\mathbb{C}^4)$ of the $3d$ Dirac operator $α\cdot (-i\nabla - \textbf{A}) + m β$ with variable magnetic field. Here, $α:= (α_1,α_2,α_3)$ and $β$ are $4 \times 4$ Dirac matrices, and $m > 0$ is the mass of a particle. We give a simple criterion for the potentials to generate discrete spectrum near $\pm m$. In the case of creation of non-real eigenvalues, this criterion gives also their location.
In this paper the discrete eigenvalues of elliptic second order differential operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$, with singular $δ$- and $δ'$-interactions are studied. We show the self-adjointness of these operators and derive equivalent formulations for the eigenvalue problems involving boundary integral operators. These formulations are suitable for the numerical computations of the discrete eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions by boundary element methods. We provide convergence results and show numerical examples.
We study upper bounds for the first non-zero eigenvalue of the Steklov problem defined on finite graphs with boundary. For finite graphs with boundary included in a Cayley graph associated to a group of polynomial growth, we give an upper bound for the first non-zero Steklov eigenvalue depending on the number of vertices of the graph and of its boundary. As a corollary, if the graph with boundary also satisfies a discrete isoperimetric inequality, we show that the first non-zero Steklov eigenvalue tends to zero as the number of vertices of the graph tends to infinity. This extends recent resul…
This paper deals with the principal eigenvalue of discrete $p$-Laplacian on the set of nonnegative integers. Alternatively, it is studying the optimal constant of a class of weighted Hardy inequalities. The main goal is the quantitative estimates of the eigenvalue. The paper begins with the case having reflecting boundary at origin and absorbing boundary at infinity. Several variational formulas are presented in different formulation: the difference form, the single summation form and the double summation form. As their applications, some explicit lower and upper estimates, a criterion for pos…
We study the spectrum of two kinds of operators involving a conical geometry: the Dirichlet Laplacian in conical layers and Schrödinger operators with attractive $δ$-interactions supported by infinite cones. Under the assumption that the cones have smooth cross-sections, we prove that such operators have infinitely many eigenvalues accumulating below the threshold of the essential spectrum and we express the accumulation rate in terms of the eigenvalues of an auxiliary one-dimensional operator with a curvature-induced potential.
This paper is concerned with regular approximations of spectra of singular discrete linear Hamiltonian systems with one singular endpoint. For any given self-adjoint subspace extension (SSE) of the corresponding minimal subspace, its spectrum can be approximated by eigenvalues of a sequence of induced regular SSEs, generated by the same difference expression on smaller finite intervals. It is shown that every SSE of the minimal subspace has a pure discrete spectrum, and the k-th eigenvalue of any given SSE is exactly the limit of the k-th eigenvalues of the induced regular SSEs; that is, spect…
We consider a class of two-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a singular interaction of the $δ$ type and a fixed strength $β$ supported by an infinite family of concentric, equidistantly spaced circles, and discuss what happens below the essential spectrum when the system is amended by an Aharonov-Bohm flux $α\in [0,\frac12]$ in the center. It is shown that if $β\ne 0$, there is a critical value $α_\mathrm{crit} \in(0,\frac12)$ such that the discrete spectrum has an accumulation point when $α<α_\mathrm{crit} $, while for $α\geα_\mathrm{crit} $ the number of eigenvalues is at most finite, in…
In this paper we develop certain aspects of perturbation theory for self-adjoint operators subject to small variations of their domains. We use the abstract theory of boundary triplets to quantify such perturbations and give the second order asymptotic analysis for resolvents, spectral projections, discrete eigenvalues of the corresponding self-adjoint operators. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the first variation and the Hessian of the eigenvalue curves bifurcating from a discrete eigenvalue of an unperturbed operator. An application is given to a matrix valued Robin Laplacian …
