The aim of this work is to explore the discrete spectrum generated by complex perturbations in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^3,\mathbb{C}^4)$ of the $3d$ Dirac operator $α\cdot (-i\nabla - \textbf{A}) + m β$ with variable magnetic field. Here, $α:= (α_1,α_2,α_3)$ and $β$ are $4 \times 4$ Dirac matrices, and $m > 0$ is the mass of a particle. We give a simple criterion for the potentials to generate discrete spectrum near $\pm m$. In the case of creation of non-real eigenvalues, this criterion gives also their location.
In this work, we investigate the discrete spectrum generated by complex matrix-valued perturbations for a class of 2D and 3D Pauli operators with nonconstant magnetic fields. We establish a simple criterion for the potentials to produce discrete spectrum near the low ground energy of the operators. Moreover, in case of creation of nonreal eigenvalues, this criterion specifies also their location.
We prove Lieb-Thirring-type bounds for fractional Schrödinger operators and Dirac operators with complex-valued potentials. The main new ingredient is a resolvent bound in Schatten spaces for the unperturbed operator, in the spirit of Frank and Sabin.
This work is concerned with the Dirac points for the honeycomb lattice with impenetrable obstacles arranged periodically in a homogeneous medium. We consider both the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalue problems and prove the existence of Dirac points for both eigenvalue problems at crossing of the lower band surfaces as well as higher band surfaces. Furthermore, we perform quantitative analysis for the eigenvalues and the slopes of two conical dispersion surfaces near each Dirac point based on a combination of the layer potential technique and asymptotic analysis. It is shown that the eigenvalue…
This note aims to give prominence to some new results on the absence and localization of eigenvalues for the Dirac and Klein-Gordon operators, starting from known resolvent estimates already established in the literature combined with the renowned Birman-Schwinger principle.
This paper is devoted to a general min-max characterization of the eigenvalues in a gap of the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint unbounded operator. We prove an abstract theorem, then we apply it to the case of Dirac operators with a Coulomb-like potential. The result is optimal for the Coulomb potential. An erratum is appended at the end of the tex.
We derive bounds on the location of non-embedded eigenvalues of Dirac operators on the half-line with non-Hermitian $L^1$-potentials. The results are sharp in the non-relativistic or weak-coupling limit. In the massless case, the absence of discrete spectrum is proved under a smallness assumption.
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the magnetic field and the complex, matrix-valued electric potential, which guarantee that the corresponding system of Schrödinger operators has no point spectrum. In particular, this allows us to prove analogous results for Pauli operators under the same electromagnetic conditions and, in turn, as a consequence of the supersymmetric structure, also for magnetic Dirac operators.
A generalized two-dimensional periodic Dirac operator is considered, with $L^{\infty}$-matrix-valued coefficients of the first order derivatives and with complex matrix-valued potential. It is proved that if the matrix-valued potential has zero bound relative to the free Dirac operator, then the spectrum of the operator in question contains no eigenvalues.
We prove the absence of eigenvaues of the three-dimensional Dirac operator with non-Hermitian potentials in unbounded regions of the complex plane under smallness conditions on the potentials in Lebesgue spaces. Our sufficient conditions are quantitative and easily checkable.
We get optimal lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the submanifold Dirac operator on locally reducible Riemannian manifolds in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic expressions. The limiting-cases are also studied. As a corollary, one gets several known results in this direction.
We provide quantitative estimates on the location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Dirac operators with complex $\ell^p$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. As a corollary, subsets of the essential spectrum free of embedded eigenvalues are determined for small $\ell^1$-potential. Further possible improvements and sharpness of the obtained spectral bounds are also discussed.
We study one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with complex measures as potentials and present an improved criterion for absence of eigenvalues which involves a weak local periodicity condition. The criterion leads to sharp quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues. We apply our result to quasiperiodic measures as potentials.
We establish a criterion for a set of eigenfunctions of the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with distributional potentials and boundary conditions containing the eigenvalue parameter to be a Riesz basis for $\mathscr{L}_2(0,π)$.
We derive an inequality that relates nodal set and eigenvalues of a class of twisted Dirac operators on closed surfaces and point out how this inequality naturally arises as an eigenvalue estimate for the $\rm Spin^c$ Dirac operator. This allows us to obtain eigenvalue estimates for the twisted Dirac operator appearing in the context of Dirac-harmonic maps and their extensions, from which we also obtain several Liouville type results.
We show that the eigenvalues of the intrinsic Dirac operator on the boundary of a Euclidean domain can be obtained as the limits of eigenvalues of Euclidean Dirac operators, either in the domain with a MIT-bag type boundary condition or in the whole space, with a suitably chosen zero order mass term.
We analyze eigenvalues emerging from thresholds of the essential spectrum of one-dimensional Dirac operators perturbed by complex and non-symmetric potentials. In the general non-self-adjoint setting we establish the existence and asymptotics of weakly coupled eigenvalues and Lieb-Thirring inequalities. As physical applications we investigate the damped wave equation and armchair graphene nanoribbons.

We present a new oscillation criterion to determine whether the number of eigenvalues below the essential spectrum of a given Jacobi operator is finite or not. As an application we show that Kenser's criterion for Jacobi operators follows as a special case.
For Dirac operators, which have discrete spectra, the concept of eigenvalues gradient is given and formulae for this gradients are obtained in terms of normalized eigenfunctions. It is shown how the gradient is being used to describe isospectral operators or when finite number of spectral data is changed.
We show that on every compact spin manifold admitting a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature Friedrich's eigenvalue estimate for the Dirac operator can be made sharp up to an arbitrarily small given error by choosing the metric suitably.
We derive upper eigenvalue bounds for the Dirac operator of a closed hypersurface in a manifold with Killing spinors such as Euclidean space, spheres or hyperbolic space. The bounds involve the Willmore functional. Relations with the Willmore inequality are briefly discussed. In higher codimension we obtain bounds on the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator of the submanifold twisted with the spinor bundle of the normal bundle.
We show that the non-embedded eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on the real line with non-Hermitian potential $V$ lie in the disjoint union of two disks in the right and left half plane, respectively, provided that the $L^1-norm$ of $V$ is bounded from above by the speed of light times the reduced Planck constant. An analogous result for the Schrödinger operator, originally proved by Abramov, Aslanyan and Davies, emerges in the nonrelativistic limit. For massless Dirac operators, the condition on $V$ implies the absence of nonreal eigenvalues. Our results are further generalized to potentials …
We study the spectrum of a one-dimensional Dirac operator pencil, with a coupling constant in front of the potential considered as the spectral parameter. Motivated by recent investigations of graphene waveguides, we focus on the values of the coupling constant for which the kernel of the Dirac operator contains a square integrable function. In physics literature such a function is called a confined zero mode. Several results on the asymptotic distribution of coupling constants giving rise to zero modes are obtained. In particular, we show that this distribution depends in a subtle way on the …
A perturbation decaying to 0 at infinity and not too irregular at 0 introduces at most a discrete set of eigenvalues into the spectral gaps of a one-dimensional Dirac operator on the half-line. We show that the number of these eigenvalues in a compact subset of a gap in the essential spectrum is given by a quasi-semiclassical asymptotic formula in the slow-decay limit, which for power-decaying perturbations is equivalent to the large-coupling limit. This asymptotic behaviour elucidates the origin of the dense point spectrum observed in spherically symmetric, radially periodic three-dimensional…
We study the (massless) Dirac operator on a 3-sphere equipped with Riemannian metric. For the standard metric the spectrum is known. In particular, the eigenvalues closest to zero are the two double eigenvalues +3/2 and -3/2. Our aim is to analyse the behaviour of eigenvalues when the metric is perturbed in an arbitrary smooth fashion from the standard one. We derive explicit perturbation formulae for the two eigenvalues closest to zero, taking account of the second variations. Note that these eigenvalues remain double eigenvalues under perturbations of the metric: they cannot split because of…
We prove a Lieb-Thirring type inequality for a complex perturbation of a d-dimensional massive Dirac operator $D_m, m\geq 0$ whose spectrum is $]-\infty , -m]\cup[m , +\infty[$. The difficulty of the study is that the unperturbed operator is not bounded from below in this case, and, to overcome it, we use the methods of complex function theory. The methods of the article also give similar results for complex perturbations of the Klein-Gordon operator.
Consider the class of n-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds with bounded sectional curvatures and diameter, and almost non-negative scalar curvature. Let r=1 if n=2,3 and r=2^{[n/2]-1}+1 if n\geq 4. We show that if the square of the Dirac operator on such a manifold has $r$ small eigenvalues, then the manifold is diffeomorphic to a nilmanifold and has trivial spin structure. Equivalently, if M is not a nilmanifold or if M is a nilmanifold with a non-trivial spin structure, then there exists a uniform lower bound on the r-th eigenvalue of the square of the Dirac operator. If a manifold with a…
In this work we prove that the eigenvalues of the $n$-dimensional massive Dirac operator $\mathscr{D}_0 + V$, $n\ge2$, perturbed by a possibly non-Hermitian potential $V$, are localized in the union of two disjoint disks of the complex plane, provided that $V$ is sufficiently small with respect to the mixed norms $L^1_{x_j} L^\infty_{\widehat{x}_j}$, for $j\in\{1,\dots,n\}$. In the massless case, we prove instead that the discrete spectrum is empty under the same smallness assumption on $V$, and in particular the spectrum is the same of the unperturbed operator, namely $σ(\mathscr{D}_0+V)=σ(\m…
In this work, a complete solution of the inverse spectral problem for a class of Dirac differential equations system is given by spectral data (eigenvalues and normalizing numbers). As a direct problem, the eigenvalue problem is solved: the asymptotic formulas of eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and normalizing numbers of problem are obtained, spectral data is defined by the sets of eigenvalues and normalizing numbers. The expansion formula with respect to eigenfunctions is obtained. Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation is derived. The main theorem on necessary and sufficient conditions for the solva…
Consider the massless Dirac operator on a 3-torus equipped with Euclidean metric and standard spin structure. It is known that the eigenvalues can be calculated explicitly: the spectrum is symmetric about zero and zero itself is a double eigenvalue. The aim of the paper is to develop a perturbation theory for the eigenvalue with smallest modulus with respect to perturbations of the metric. Here the application of perturbation techniques is hindered by the fact that eigenvalues of the massless Dirac operator have even multiplicity, which is a consequence of this operator commuting with the anti…
Let M be a compact manifold with a spin structure χand a Riemannian metric g. Let λ_g^2 be the smallest eigenvalue of the square of the Dirac operator with respect to g and χ. The τ-invariant is defined as τ(M,χ):= sup inf \sqrt{λ_g^2} Vol(M,g)^{1/n} where the supremum runs over the set of all conformal classes on M, and where the infimum runs over all metrics in the given class. We show that τ(T^2,χ)=2\sqrtπ if χis ``the'' non-trivial spin structure on T^2. In order to calculate this invariant, we study the infimum as a function on the spin-conformal moduli space and we show that the infimum …
