A perturbation decaying to 0 at infinity and not too irregular at 0 introduces at most a discrete set of eigenvalues into the spectral gaps of a one-dimensional Dirac operator on the half-line. We show that the number of these eigenvalues in a compact subset of a gap in the essential spectrum is given by a quasi-semiclassical asymptotic formula in the slow-decay limit, which for power-decaying perturbations is equivalent to the large-coupling limit. This asymptotic behaviour elucidates the origin of the dense point spectrum observed in spherically symmetric, radially periodic three-dimensional Dirac operators.
We consider perturbations of Dirac type operators on complete, connected metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure. Under a suitable set of assumptions, we prove quadratic estimates for such operators and hence deduce that these operators have a bounded functional calculus. In particular, we deduce a Kato square root type estimate.
In this paper we are interested in generalizing Keller-type eigenvalue estimates for the non-selfadjoint Schrödinger operator to the Dirac operator, imposing some suitable rigidity conditions on the matricial structure of the potential, without necessarily requiring the smallness of its norm.
We consider self-adjoint Dirac operators $\ham{D}=\ham{D}_0 + V(x)$, where $\ham{D}_0$ is the free three-dimensional Dirac operator and $V(x)$ is a smooth compactly supported Hermitian matrix. We define resonances of $\ham{D}$ as poles of the meromorphic continuation of its cut-off resolvent. An upper bound on the number of resonances in disks, an estimate on the scattering determinant and the Lifshits-Krein trace formula then leads to a global Poisson wave trace formula for resonances of $\ham{D}$.
A relativistic extension of our pseudo-shifted $\ell$-expansion technique is presented to solve for the eigenvalues of Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations. Once more we show the numerical usefulness of its results via comparison with available numerical integration data.
We prove quadratic estimates for complex perturbations of Dirac-type operators, and thereby show that such operators have a bounded functional calculus. As an application we show that spectral projections of the Hodge--Dirac operator on compact manifolds depend analytically on $L_\infty$ changes in the metric. We also recover a unified proof of many results in the Calderón program, including the Kato square root problem and the boundedness of the Cauchy operator on Lipschitz curves and surfaces.
We derive dispersion estimates for solutions of the one-dimensional discrete perturbed Dirac equation. To this end we develop basic scattering theory and establish a limiting absorption principle for discrete perturbed Dirac operators.
We analyze eigenvalues emerging from thresholds of the essential spectrum of one-dimensional Dirac operators perturbed by complex and non-symmetric potentials. In the general non-self-adjoint setting we establish the existence and asymptotics of weakly coupled eigenvalues and Lieb-Thirring inequalities. As physical applications we investigate the damped wave equation and armchair graphene nanoribbons.
We study the dispersive properties of the wave equation and the massless Dirac equation in three space dimensions, perturbed with electromagnetic potentials. The potentials are assumed to be small but may be rough. For both equations, we prove a dispersive estimate of the form |u(t,x)|< C/t. The constant C can be estimated in terms of a weighted H^s norm of the data, for suitable values of s. As a consequence of our method of proof, we establish the limiting absorption principle for the massless Dirac operator perturbed with a small, rough matrix potential.
We study the two dimensional massless Coulomb-Dirac operator restricted to its positive spectral subspace and prove estimates on the negative eigenvalues created by electromagnetic perturbations.
We derive dispersion estimates for solutions of a one-dimensional discrete Dirac equations with a potential. In particular, we improve our previous result, weakening the conditions on the potential. To this end we also provide new results concerning scattering for the corresponding perturbed Dirac operators which are of independent interest. Most notably, we show that the reflection and transmission coefficients belong to the Wiener algebra.
In this work we prove that the eigenvalues of the $n$-dimensional massive Dirac operator $\mathscr{D}_0 + V$, $n\ge2$, perturbed by a possibly non-Hermitian potential $V$, are localized in the union of two disjoint disks of the complex plane, provided that $V$ is sufficiently small with respect to the mixed norms $L^1_{x_j} L^\infty_{\widehat{x}_j}$, for $j\in\{1,\dots,n\}$. In the massless case, we prove instead that the discrete spectrum is empty under the same smallness assumption on $V$, and in particular the spectrum is the same of the unperturbed operator, namely $σ(\mathscr{D}_0+V)=σ(\m…
We study Dirichlet Laplacian in a screw-shaped region, i.e. a straight twisted tube of a non-circular cross section. It is shown that a local perturbation which consists of "slowing down" the twisting in the mean gives rise to a non-empty discrete spectrum.
We prove a sharp Hardy-type inequality for the Dirac operator. We exploit this inequality to obtain spectral properties of the Dirac operator perturbed with Hermitian matrix-valued potentials $\mathbf V$ of Coulomb type: we characterise its eigenvalues in terms of the Birman-Schwinger principle and we bound its discrete spectrum from below, showing that the \emph{ground-state energy} is reached if and only if $\mathbf V$ verifies some {rigidity} conditions. In the particular case of an electrostatic potential, these imply that $\mathbf V$ is the Coulomb potential.
We study general conditions under which the computations of the index of a perturbed Dirac operator $D_{s}=D+sZ$ localize to the singular set of the bundle endomorphism $Z$ in the semi-classical limit $s\to \infty $. We show how to use Witten's method to compute the index of $D$ by doing a combinatorial computation involving local data at the nondegenerate singular points of the operator $Z$. In particular, we provide examples of novel deformations of the de Rham operator to establish new results relating the Euler characteristic of a spin$^{c}$ manifold to maps between its even and odd spinor…

We develop relative oscillation theory for one-dimensional Dirac operators which, rather than measuring the spectrum of one single operator, measures the difference between the spectra of two different operators. This is done by replacing zeros of solutions of one operator by weighted zeros of Wronskians of solutions of two different operators. In particular, we show that a Sturm-type comparison theorem still holds in this situation and demonstrate how this can be used to investigate the number of eigenvalues in essential spectral gaps. Furthermore, the connection with Krein's spectral shift f…
We consider the homogenization of a singularly perturbed self-adjoint fourth order elliptic equation with locally periodic coefficients, stated in a bounded domain. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. The presence of large parameters in the lower order terms and the dependence of the coefficients on the slow variable give rise to the effect of localization of the eigenfunctions. We show that the $j$th eigenfunction can be approximated by a rescaled function that is constructed in terms of the $j$th eigenfunction of fourth or second order order effective opera…
