I present an example of a discrete Schr"odinger operator that shows that it is possible to have embedded singular spectrum and, at the same time, discrete eigenvalues that approach the edges of the essential spectrum (much) faster than exponentially. This settles a conjecture of Simon (in the negative). The potential is of von Neumann-Wigner type, with careful navigation around a previously identified borderline situation.
We consider a family of one frequency discrete analytic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators which appear in [Bjer]. We show that this family provides an example of coexistence of absolutely continuous and point spectrum for some parameters as well as coexistence of absolutely continuous and singular continuous spectrum for some other parameters.
This paper deals with general structural properties of one-dimensional Schr"odinger operators with some absolutely continuous spectrum. The basic result says that the omega limit points of the potential under the shift map are reflectionless on the support of the absolutely continuous part of the spectral measure. This implies an Oracle Theorem for such potentials and Denisov-Rakhmanov type theorems. In the discrete case, for Jacobi operators, these issues were discussed in my recent paper [19]. The treatment of the continuous case in the present paper depends on the same basic ideas.
We establish bounds on the density of states measure for Schrödinger operators. These are deterministic results that do not require the existence of the density of states measure, or, equivalently, of the integrated density of states. The results are stated in terms of a "density of states outer-measure" that always exists, and provides an upper bound for the density of states measure when it exists. We prove log-Hölder continuity for this density of states outer-measure in one, two, and three dimensions for Schrödinger operators, and in any dimension for discrete Schrödinger operators.
We consider a random family of Schrödinger operators on a cover $X$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $M = X/Γ$. We present several results on their spectral theory, in particular almost sure constancy of the spectral components and existence and non-randomness of an integrated density of states. We also sketch a groupoid based general framework which allows to treat basic features of random operators in different contexts in a unified way. Further topics of research are also discussed.
We consider discrete Schr"odinger operators on the line with potentials generated by a minimal homeomorphism on a compact metric space and a continuous sampling function. We introduce the concepts of topological and metric repetition property. Assuming that the underlying dynamical system satisfies one of these repetition properties, we show using Gordon's Lemma that for a generic continuous sampling function, the associated Schr"odinger operators have no eigenvalues in a topological or metric sense, respectively. We present a number of applications, particularly to shifts and skew-shifts on t…
In this paper we prove a subelliptic resolvent estimate for a class of semiclassical non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with purely imaginary potentials when the spectral parameter is in a parabolic neighborhood of the imaginary axis.
We work with the Schr\" odinger equation \begin{equation*} H_q y = -y'' + q(x)y = z^2y, \ x\in [0,\infty), \end{equation*} where $q\in L_1((0,\infty), xdx)$, and asssume that the corresponding operator $H_q$ is defined by the Dirihlet condition $y(0) = 0$ The function $ψ(z) = y(0,z)$ where $y(x,z)$ is the Jost solution of the above equation is analytic in the whole complex plane, provided that the support of the potential $q$ is finite. The zeros of $ψ$ are called the resonances. It is known that $q$ is uniquely determined by the sequence of resonances. Using only finitely many resonances lyin…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the controllability of a Schr\''odinger equation involving the sub-Laplacian of a nilmanifold obtained by taking the quotient of a group of Heisenberg type by one of its discrete sub-groups.This class of nilpotent Lie groups is a major example of stratified Lie groups of step 2. The sub-Laplacian involved in these Schr\''odinger equations is subelliptic, and, contrarily to what happens for the usual elliptic Schr\''odinger equation for example on flat tori or on negatively curved manifolds, there exists a minimal time of controllability. The main…
This paper is essentially derived from the observation that some results used for improving constants in the Lieb-Thirring inequalities for Schrodinger operators in L2(-\infty,\infty) can be translated to the discrete Schrodinger op- erators and more generally to Jacobi matrices. Some results were previ- ously proved by D. Hundertmark and B. Simon and the aim of this article is to improve the constants obtained in their article [7].
For Schrodinger operators, there is a well known and widely used formula connecting the transfer matrices and Dirichlet determinants. No analog of this formula was previously known for CMV matrices. In this paper we fill this gap and provide the CMV analog of this formula.
We study ergodic random Schr"odinger operators on a covering manifold, where the randomness enters both via the potential and the metric. We prove measurability of the random operators, almost sure constancy of their spectral properties, the existence of a selfaveraging integrated density of states and a Šubin type trace formula.
In 1956 $Å$. Pleijel gave his celebrated theorem showing that the inequality in Courant's theorem on the number of nodal domains is strict for large eigenvalues of the Laplacian. This was a consequence of a stronger result giving an asymptotic upper bound for the number of nodal domains of the eigenfunctions as the eigenvalues tend to $+\infty$. A similar question occurs naturally for Schr"\odinger operators. The first significant result has been obtained recently by the first author for the harmonic oscillator. The purpose of this paper is to consider more general potentials which are radial.…
I explore some consequences of a groundbreaking result of Breimesser and Pearson on the absolutely continuous spectrum of one-dimensional Schr"odinger operators. These include an Oracle Theorem that predicts the potential and rather general results on the approach to certain limit potentials. In particular, we prove a Denisov-Rakhmanov type theorem for the general finite gap case. The main theme is the following: It is extremely difficult to produce absolutely continuous spectrum in one space dimension and thus its existence has strong implications.
In this paper, we introduce a new family of functions to construct Schrödinger operators with embedded eigenvalues. This particularly allows us to construct discrete Schrödinger operators with arbitrary prescribed sets of eigenvalues.
We provide examples of operators $T(D)+V$ with decaying potentials that have embedded eigenvalues. The decay of the potential depends on the curvature of the Fermi surfaces of constant kinetic energy $T$. We make the connection to counterexamples in Fourier restriction theory.
The problem of absence of eigenvalues imbedded into the continuous spectrum is considered for a Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential perturbed by a sufficiently fast decaying ``impurity'' potential. Results of this type have previously been known for the one-dimensional case only. Absence of embedded eigenvalues is shown in dimensions two and three if the corresponding Fermi surface is irreducible modulo natural symmetries. It is conjectured that all periodic potentials satisfy this condition. Separable periodic potentials satisfy it, and hence in dimensions two and three Schrödinger…
It is known that the spectrum of Schrödinger operators with sparse potentials consists of singular continuous spectrum. We give a sufficient condition so that the edge of the singular continuous spectrum is not an eigenvalue and construct examples with singular continuous spectrum which have no eigenvalues and which have a single negative eigenvalue.
In this note, under a certain assumption on an affine space of operators, which admit embedded eigenvalues, it is shown that the singular part of the spectral shift function of any pair of operators from this space is an integer-valued function. The proof uses a natural decomposition of Pushnitski's $μ$-invariant into "absolutely continuous" and "singular" parts. As a corollary, the Birman-Krein formula follows.
We consider non-local Schrödinger operators with kinetic terms given by several different types of functions of the Laplacian and potentials decaying to zero at infinity, and derive conditions ruling embedded eigenvalues out. Our goal in this paper is to advance techniques based on virial theorems, Mourre estimates, and an extended version of the Birman-Schwinger principle, previously developed for classical Schrödinger operators but thus far not used for non-local operators. We also present a number of specific cases by choosing particular classes of kinetic and potential terms, and discuss e…
A common challenge to proving asymptotic stability of solitary waves is understanding the spectrum of the operator associated with the linearized flow. The existence of eigenvalues can inhibit the dispersive estimates key to proving stability. Following the work of Marzuola & Simpson, we prove the absence of embedded eigenvalues for a collection of nonlinear Schrodinger equations, including some one and three dimensional supercritical equations, and the three dimensional cubic-quintic equation. Our results also rule out nonzero eigenvalues within the spectral gap and, in 3D, endpoint resonance…
