In this article we prove that it is possible to construct, using newest-vertex bisection, meshes that equidistribute the error in $H^1$-norm, whenever the function to approximate can be decomposed as a sum of a regular part plus a singular part with singularities around a finite number of points. This decomposition is usual in regularity results of Partial Differential Equations (PDE). As a consequence, the meshes turn out to be quasi-optimal, and convergence rates for adaptive finite element methods (AFEM) using Lagrange finite elements of any polynomial degree are obtained.
In this paper, we study the adaptive planewave discretization for a cluster of eigenvalues of second-order elliptic partial differential equations. We first design an a posteriori error estimator and prove both the upper and lower bounds. Based on the a posteriori error estimator, we propose an adaptive planewave method. We then prove that the adaptive planewave approximations have the linear convergence rate and quasi-optimal complexity.
Convergence of an adaptive collocation method for the stationary parametric diffusion equation with finite-dimensional affine coefficient is shown. The adaptive algorithm relies on a recently introduced residual-based reliable a posteriori error estimator. For the convergence proof, a strategy recently used for a stochastic Galerkin method with an hierarchical error estimator is transferred to the collocation setting. Extensions to other variants of adaptive collocation methods (including the classical one proposed in the paper "Dimension-adaptive tensor-product quadratuture" Computing (2003) …
We consider the convergence of adaptive BEM for weakly-singular and hypersingular integral equations associated with the Laplacian and the Helmholtz operator in 2D and 3D. The local mesh-refinement is driven by some two-level error estimator. We show that the adaptive algorithm drives the underlying error estimates to zero. Moreover, we prove that the saturation assumption already implies linear convergence of the error with optimal algebraic rates.
We develop a general convergence theory for adaptive discontinuous Galerkin methods for elliptic PDEs covering the popular SIPG, NIPG and LDG schemes as well as all practically relevant marking strategies. Another key feature of the presented result is, that it holds for penalty parameters only necessary for the standard analysis of the respective scheme. The analysis is based on a quasi interpolation into a newly developed limit space of the adaptively created non-conforming discrete spaces, which enables to generalise the basic convergence result for conforming adaptive finite element method…

We develop a basic convergence analysis for an adaptive $\textsf{C}^0\textsf{IPG}$ method for the Biharmonic problem, which provides convergence without rates for all practically relevant marking strategies and all penalty parameters assuring coercivity of the method. The analysis hinges on embedding properties of (broken) Sobolev and BV spaces, and the construction of a suitable limit space. In contrast to the convergence result of adaptive discontinuous Galerkin methods for elliptic PDEs, by Kreuzer and Georgoulis [Math. Comp. 87 (2018), no.~314, 2611--2640], here we have to deal with the fa…
Guaranteed lower Dirichlet eigenvalue bounds (GLB) can be computed for the $m$-th Laplace operator with a recently introduced extra-stabilized nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart ($m=1$) or Morley ($m=2$) finite element eigensolver. Striking numerical evidence for the superiority of a new adaptive eigensolver motivates the convergence analysis in this paper with a proof of optimal convergence rates of the GLB towards a simple eigenvalue. The proof is based on (a generalization of) known abstract arguments entitled as the axioms of adaptivity. Beyond the known a priori convergence rates, a medius an…
We revisit a unified methodology for the iterative solution of nonlinear equations in Hilbert spaces. Our key observation is that the general approach from [Heid & Wihler, Math. Comp. 89 (2020), Calcolo 57 (2020)] satisfies an energy contraction property in the context of (abstract) strongly monotone problems. This property, in turn, is the crucial ingredient in the recent convergence analysis in [Gantner et al., arXiv:2003.10785]. In particular, we deduce that adaptive iterative linearized finite element methods (AILFEMs) lead to full linear convergence with optimal algebraic rates with respe…
We show that adaptive least-squares finite element methods driven by the canonical least-squares functional converge under weak conditions on PDE operator, mesh-refinement, and marking strategy. Contrary to prior works, our plain convergence does neither rely on sufficiently fine initial meshes nor on severe restrictions on marking parameters. Finally, we prove that convergence is still valid if a contractive iterative solver is used to obtain the approximate solutions (e.g., the preconditioned conjugate gradient method with optimal preconditioner). The results apply within a fairly abstract f…
In this paper, we present several new a posteriori error estimators and two adaptive mixed finite element methods \textsf{AMFEM1} and \textsf{AMFEM2} for the Hodge Laplacian problem in finite element exterior calculus. We prove that \textsf{AMFEM1} and \textsf{AMFEM2} are both convergent starting from any initial coarse mesh. A suitably defined quasi error is crucial to the convergence analysis. In addition, we prove the optimality of \textsf{AMFEM2}. The main technical contribution is a localized discrete upper bound. As opposed to existing literature, our results work on Lipschitz domains wi…
We introduce a tamed exponential time integrator which exploits linear terms in both the drift and diffusion for Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) with a one sided globally Lipschitz drift term. Strong convergence of the proposed scheme is proved, exploiting the boundedness of the geometric Brownian motion (GBM) and we establish order 1 convergence for linear diffusion terms. In our implementation we illustrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme compared to existing fixed step methods and utilize it in an adaptive time stepping scheme. Furthermore we extend the method to nonlinear di…
In this paper, we study the convergence of adaptive mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for H(curl)-elliptic problems. We first get the mixed model of H(curl)-elliptic problem by introducing a new intermediate variable. Then we discuss the continuous variational problem and discrete variational problem, which based on interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin approximation. Next, we construct the corresponding posteriori error indicator, and prove the contraction of the summation of the energy error and the scaled error indicator. At last, we confirm and illustrate the theoretic…
Convergence Analysis of Adaptive Finite Element Algorithms for a Regularized Variational Model of Quasi-Static Brittle Fracture in "Strain-Limiting" Elastic Solids
We consider h-adaptive algorithms in the context of the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). Under quite general assumptions on the building blocks SOLVE, ESTIMATE, MARK, and REFINE of such algorithms, we prove plain convergence in the sense that the adaptive algorithm drives the underlying a posteriori error estimator to zero. Unlike available results in the literature, our analysis avoids the use of any reliability and efficiency estimate, but only relies on structural properties of the estimator, namely stability on non-refined elements and reduction on refined…
In this work, an adaptive edge element method is developed for an H(curl)-elliptic constrained optimal control problem. We use the lowest-order Nedelec's edge elements of first family and the piecewise (element-wise) constant functions to approximate the state and the control, respectively, and propose a new adaptive algorithm with error estimators involving both residual-type error estimators and lower-order data oscillations. By using a local regular decomposition for H(curl)-functions and the standard bubble function techniques, we derive the a posteriori error estimates for the proposed er…

Adaptive Local Iterative Filtering (ALIF) is a currently proposed novel time-frequency analysis tool. It has been empirically shown that ALIF is able to separate components and overcome the mode-mixing problem. However, so far its convergence is still an open problem, particularly for highly nonstationary signals, due to the fact that the kernel associated with ALIF is non-translational invariant, non-convolutional and non-symmetric. Our first contribution in this work is providing a convergence analysis of ALIF. From the practical perspective, ALIF depends on a robust frequencies estimator, b…
The subject of this work is a new stochastic Galerkin method for second-order elliptic partial differential equations with random diffusion coefficients. It combines operator compression in the stochastic variables with tree-based spline wavelet approximation in the spatial variables. Relying on a multilevel expansion of the given random diffusion coefficient, the method is shown to achieve optimal computational complexity up to a logarithmic factor. In contrast to existing results, this holds in particular when the achievable convergence rate is limited by the regularity of the random field, …

We consider an adaptive algorithm for finite element methods for the isogeometric analysis (IGAFEM) of elliptic (possibly non-symmetric) second-order partial differential equations. We employ analysis-suitable T-splines of arbitrary odd degree on T-meshes generated by the refinement strategy of [Morgenstern, Peterseim, Comput. Aided Geom. Design 34 (2015)] in 2D and [Morgenstern, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 54 (2016)] in 3D. Adaptivity is driven by some weighted residual a posteriori error estimator. We prove linear convergence of the error estimator (which is equivalent to the sum of energy error pl…
We formulate and analyze a goal-oriented adaptive finite element method (GOAFEM) for a semilinear elliptic PDE and a linear goal functional. The strategy involves the finite element solution of a linearized dual problem, where the linearization is part of the adaptive strategy. Linear convergence and optimal algebraic convergence rates are shown.
Adaptive Moment Estimation (ADAM) is a very popular training algorithm for deep neural networks and belongs to the family of adaptive gradient descent optimizers. However to the best of the authors knowledge no complete convergence analysis exists for ADAM. The contribution of this paper is a method for the local convergence analysis in batch mode for a deterministic fixed training set, which gives necessary conditions for the hyperparameters of the ADAM algorithm. Due to the local nature of the arguments the objective function can be non-convex but must be at least twice continuously differen…
The adaptive nonconforming Morley finite element method (FEM) approximates a regular solution to the von Kármán equations with optimal convergence rates for sufficiently fine triangulations and small bulk parameter in the Dörfler marking. This follows from the general axiomatic framework with the key arguments of stability, reduction, discrete reliability, and quasiorthogonality of an explicit residual-based error estimator. Particular attention is on the nonlinearity and the piecewise Sobolev embeddings required in the resulting trilinear form in the weak formulation of the nonconforming disc…
