In this article we prove convergence of adaptive finite element methods for second order elliptic eigenvalue problems. We consider Lagrange finite elements of any degree and prove convergence for simple as well as multiple eigenvalues under a minimal refinement of marked elements, for all reasonable marking strategies, and starting from any initial triangulation.
Regular convergence, together with various other types of convergence, has been studied since the 1970s for the discrete approximations of linear operators. In this paper, we consider the eigenvalue approximation of compact operators whose spectral problem can be written as the eigenvalue problem of some holomophic Fredholm operator function. Focusing on the finite element methods (conforming, discontinuous Galerkin, etc.), we show that the regular convergence of discrete holomorphic operator functions follows from the approximation property of the finite element spaces and the compact converg…
In this paper, we study the adaptive planewave discretization for a cluster of eigenvalues of second-order elliptic partial differential equations. We first design an a posteriori error estimator and prove both the upper and lower bounds. Based on the a posteriori error estimator, we propose an adaptive planewave method. We then prove that the adaptive planewave approximations have the linear convergence rate and quasi-optimal complexity.
The aim of this paper is to propose an efficient adaptive finite element method for eigenvalue problems based on the multilevel correction scheme and inverse power method. This method involves solving associated boundary value problems on each adaptive partitions and very low dimensional eigenvalue problems on some special meshes which are controlled by the proposed algorithm. Since we Hence the efficiency of solving eigenvalue problems can be improved to be similar to the adaptive finite element method for the associated boundary value problems. The convergence and optimal complexity is theor…
We prove convergence of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem using quadratic or higher Lagrange finite elements on Worsey-Farin splits in three dimensions. To do this, we construct two Fortin-like operators to prove uniform convergence of the corresponding source problem. We present numerical experiments to illustrate the theoretical results.
We consider finite element approximations of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem in two dimensions. We prove, in certain settings, convergence of the discrete eigenvalues using Lagrange finite elements. In particular, we prove convergence in three scenarios: piecewise linear elements on Powell--Sabin triangulations, piecewise quadratic elements on Clough--Tocher triangulations, and piecewise quartics (and higher) elements on general shape-regular triangulations. We provide numerical experiments that support the theoretical results. The computations also show that, on general triangulations, the eig…
We present a perturbed subspace iteration algorithm to approximate the lowermost eigenvalue cluster of an elliptic eigenvalue problem. As a prototype, we consider the Laplace eigenvalue problem posed in a polygonal domain. The algorithm is motivated by the analysis of inexact (perturbed) inverse iteration algorithms in numerical linear algebra. We couple the perturbed inverse iteration approach with mesh refinement strategy based on residual estimators. We demonstrate our approach on model problems in two and three dimensions.

In this paper we study the approximation of eigenvalues arising from the mixed Hellinger--Reissner elasticity problem by using the simple finite element using partial relaxation of $C^0$ vertex continuity of stresses introduced recently by Jun Hu and Rui Ma. We prove that the method converge when a residual type error estimator is considered and that the estimator decays optimally with respect to the number of degrees of freedom.
In this paper, we consider the Newton-Schur method in Hilbert space and obtain quadratic convergence. For the symmetric elliptic eigenvalue problem discretized by the standard finite element method and non-overlapping domain decomposition method, we use the Steklov-Poincaré operator to reduce the eigenvalue problem on the domain $Ω$ into the nonlinear eigenvalue subproblem on $Γ$, which is the union of subdomain boundaries. We prove that the convergence rate for the Newton-Schur method is $ε_{N}\leq CH^{2}(1+\ln(H/h))^{2}ε^{2}$, where the constant $C$ is independent of the fine mesh size $h$ a…
This paper is concerned with the convergence analysis of an extended variation of the locally optimal preconditioned conjugate gradient method (LOBPCG) for the extreme eigenvalue of a Hermitian matrix polynomial which admits some extended form of Rayleigh quotient. This work is a generalization of the analysis by Ovtchinnikov (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 46(5):2567-2592, 2008). As instances, the algorithms for definite matrix pairs and hyperbolic quadratic matrix polynomials are shown to be globally convergent and to have an asymptotically local convergence rate. Also, numerical examples are given t…
An extra-stabilised Morley finite element method (FEM) directly computes guaranteed lower eigenvalue bounds with optimal a priori convergence rates for the bi-Laplace Dirichlet eigenvalues. The smallness assumption $\min\{λ_h,λ\}h_{\max}^{4}$ $\le 184.9570$ in $2$D (resp. $\le 21.2912$ in $3$D) on the maximal mesh-size $h_{\max}$ makes the computed $k$-th discrete eigenvalue $λ_h\le λ$ a lower eigenvalue bound for the $k$-th Dirichlet eigenvalue $λ$. This holds for multiple and clusters of eigenvalues and serves for the localisation of the bi-Laplacian Dirichlet eigenvalues in particular for c…
The transmission eigenvalue problem arising from the inverse scattering theory is of great importance in the theory of qualitative methods and in the practical applications. In this paper, we study the transmission eigenvalue problem for anisotropic inhomogeneous media in $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$,(d=2,3). Using the T-coercivity and the spectral approximation theory, we derive an a posteriori estimator of residual type and prove its effectiveness and reliability for eigenfunctions. In addition, we also prove the reliability of the estimator for transmission eigenvalues. The numerical experiments…
Guaranteed lower Dirichlet eigenvalue bounds (GLB) can be computed for the $m$-th Laplace operator with a recently introduced extra-stabilized nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart ($m=1$) or Morley ($m=2$) finite element eigensolver. Striking numerical evidence for the superiority of a new adaptive eigensolver motivates the convergence analysis in this paper with a proof of optimal convergence rates of the GLB towards a simple eigenvalue. The proof is based on (a generalization of) known abstract arguments entitled as the axioms of adaptivity. Beyond the known a priori convergence rates, a medius an…

We present a comprehensive convergence analysis for Self-Consistent Field (SCF) iteration to solve a class of nonlinear eigenvalue problems with eigenvector-dependency (NEPv). Using a tangent-angle matrix as an intermediate measure for approximation error, we establish new formulas for two fundamental quantities that optimally characterize the local convergence of the plain SCF: the local contraction factor and the local average contraction factor. In comparison with previously established results, new convergence rate estimates provide much sharper bounds on the convergence speed. As an appli…

In Part I of this paper, we introduced a two dimensional eigenvalue problem (2DEVP) of a matrix pair and investigated its fundamental theory such as existence, variational characterization and number of 2D-eigenvalues. In Part II, we proposed a Rayleigh quotient iteration (RQI)-like algorithm (2DRQI) for computing a 2D-eigentriplet of the 2DEVP near a prescribed point, and discussed applications of 2DEVP and 2DRQI for solving the minimax problem of Rayleigh quotients, and computing the distance to instability. In this third part, we present convergence analysis of the 2DRQI. We show that under…

We present a new approach to compute selected eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the two-parameter eigenvalue problem. Our method requires computing generalized eigenvalue problems of the same size as the matrices of the initial two-parameter eigenvalue problem. The method is applicable for right definite problems, possibly after performing an affine transformation. This includes a class of Helmholtz equations when separation of variables is applied. We provide a convergence proof for extremal eigenvalues and empirical evidence along with a local convergence proof for other eigenvalues.
We propose a new normalized Sobolev gradient flow for the Gross-Pitaevskii eigenvalue problem based on an energy inner product that depends on time through the density of the flow itself. The gradient flow is well-defined and converges to an eigenfunction. For ground states we can quantify the convergence speed as exponentially fast where the rate depends on spectral gaps of a linearized operator. The forward Euler time discretization of the flow yields a numerical method which generalizes the inverse iteration for the nonlinear eigenvalue problem. For sufficiently small time steps, the method…
The present paper proposes an inf-sup stable divergence free virtual element method and associated a priori, and a posteriori error analysis to approximate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Stokes spectral problem in one shot. For the a priori analysis, we take advantage of the compactness of the solution operator to prove convergence of the eigenfunctions and double order convergence of eigenvalues. Additionally we also propose an a posteriori estimator of residual type, which we prove is reliable and efficient, in order to perform adaptive refinements that allow to recover the optima…
In this paper, we investigate a class of nonlinear eigenvalue problems resulting from quantum physics. We first prove that the eigenfunction cannot be a polynomial on any open set, which may be reviewed as a refinement of the classic unique continuation property. Then we apply the non-polynomial behavior of eigenfunction to show that the adaptive finite element approximations are convergent even if the initial mesh is not fine enough. We finally remark that similar arguments can be applied to a class of linear eigenvalue problems that improve the relevant existing result.

In this work, we investigate the convergence of numerical approximations to coercivity constants of variational problems. These constants are essential components of rigorous error bounds for reduced-order modeling; extension of these bounds to the error with respect to exact solutions requires an understanding of convergence rates for discrete coercivity constants. The results are obtained by characterizing the coercivity constant as a spectral value of a self-adjoint linear operator; for several differential equations, we show that the coercivity constant is related to the eigenvalue of a co…
This paper studies the $J$-method of [E. Jarlebring, S. Kvaal, W. Michiels. SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 36-4:A1978-A2001, 2014] for nonlinear eigenvector problems in a general Hilbert space framework. This is the basis for variational discretization techniques and a mesh-independent numerical analysis. A simple modification of the method mimics an energy-decreasing discrete gradient flow. In the case of the Gross-Pitaevskii eigenvalue problem, we prove global convergence towards an eigenfunction for a damped version of the $J$-method. More importantly, when the iterations are sufficiently close to an…
