In this paper, the stabilized finite element method based on local projection is applied to discretize the Stokes eigenvalue problems and the corresponding convergence analysis is given. Furthermore, we also use a method to improve the convergence rate for the eigenpair approximations of the Stokes eigenvalue problem. It is based on a postprocessing strategy that contains solving an additional Stokes source problem on an augmented finite element space which can be constructed either by refining the mesh or by using the same mesh but increasing the order of mixed finite element space. Numerical examples are given to confirm the theoretical analysis.
We present a novel postprocessing technique for a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of time-dependent Maxwell's equations that we couple with an explicit Runge-Kutta time-marching scheme. The postprocessed electromagnetic field converges one order faster than the unprocessed solution in the H(curl)-norm. The proposed approach is local, in the sense that the enhanced solution is computed independently in each cell of the computational mesh, and at each time step of interest. As a result, it is inexpensive to compute, especially if the region of interest is localized, either in time or …
In this paper, we present block preconditioners for a stabilized discretization of the poroelastic equations developed in [45]. The discretization is proved to be well-posed with respect to the physical and discretization parameters, and thus provides a framework to develop preconditioners that are robust with respect to such parameters as well. We construct both norm-equivalent (diagonal) and field-of-value-equivalent (triangular) preconditioners for both the stabilized discretization and a perturbation of the stabilized discretization that leads to a smaller overall problem after static cond…
An abstract framework is developed that enables the analysis of algebraically stabilized discretizations in a unified way. This framework is applied to a discretization of this kind for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The definition of this scheme contains a new limiter that improves a standard one in such a way that local and global discrete maximum principles are satisfied on arbitrary simplicial meshes.
This article discusses nonconforming finite element methods for convex minimization problems and systematically derives dual mixed formulations. Duality relations lead to simple error estimates that avoid an explicit treatment of nonconformity errors. A reconstruction formula provides the discrete solution of the dual problem via a simple postprocessing procedure which implies a strong duality relation and is of interest in a posteriori error estimation. The framework applies to differentiable and nonsmooth problems, examples include $p$-Laplace, total-variation regularized, and obstacle probl…
In this paper we develop an a priori error analysis of a new unified mixed finite element method for the coupling of fluid flow with porous media flow in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\in\{2,3\}$ on isotropic meshes. Flows are governed by the Stokes and Darcy equations, respectively, and the corresponding transmission conditions are given by mass conservation, balance of normal forces, and the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman law. The approach utilizes a modification of the Darcy problem which allows us to apply a variant nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart finite element to the whole coupled Stokes-Darcy problem. The w…
In this work, we consider a hybrid mixed finite element method for Biot's model. The hybrid P1-RT0-P0 discretization of the displacement-pressure-Darcy's velocity system of Biot's model presented in \cite{C. Niu} is not uniformly stable with respect to the physical parameters, resulting in some issues in numerical simulations. To alleviate such problems, following \cite{V. Girault}, we stabilize the hybrid scheme with face bubble functions and show the well-posedness with respect to physical and discretization parameters, which provide optimal error estimates of the stabilized method. We intro…
We consider a family of variational time discretizations that are generalizations of discontinuous Galerkin (dG) and continuous Galerkin-Petrov (cGP) methods. The family is characterized by two parameters. One describes the polynomial ansatz order while the other one is associated with the global smoothness that is ensured by higher order collocation conditions at both ends of the subintervals. The presented methods provide the same stability properties as dG or cGP. Provided that suitable quadrature rules of Hermite type for evaluating the integrals in the variational conditions are used, the…
We consider a stabilization method for divergence-conforming B-spline discretizations of the incompressible Navier--Stokes problem wherein jumps in high-order normal derivatives of the velocity field are penalized across interior mesh facets. We prove that this method is pressure robust, consistent, and energy stable, and we show how to select the stabilization parameter appearing in the method so that excessive numerical dissipation is avoided in both the cross-wind direction and in the diffusion-dominated regime. We examine the efficacy of the method using a suite of numerical experiments, a…
In this paper we consider a class of fictitious domain finite element methods known from the literature. These methods use standard finite element spaces on a fixed unfitted triangulation combined with the Nitsche technique and a ghost penalty stabilization. As a model problem we consider the application of such a method to the Poisson equation. We introduce and analyze a new class of preconditioners that is based on a subspace decomposition approach. The finite element space is split into two subspaces, where one subspace is spanned by all nodal basis functions corresponding to nodes on the b…
We present compatible finite element space discretizations for the ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations. The magnetic field is considered both in div- and curl-conforming spaces, leading to a strongly or weakly preserved zero-divergence condition, respectively. The equations are discretized in space such that transfers between the kinetic, internal, and magnetic energies are consistent, leading to a preserved total energy. We also discuss further adjustments to the discretization required to additionally achieve magnetic helicity preservation. Finally, we describe new transport sta…
We propose a state redistribution method for high order discontinuous Galerkin methods on curvilinear embedded boundary grids. State redistribution relaxes the overly restrictive CFL condition that results from arbitrarily small cut cells and explicit time stepping. Thus, the scheme can take time steps that are proportional to the size of cells in the background grid. The discontinuous Galerkin scheme is stabilized by postprocessing the numerical solution after each stage or step of an explicit time stepping method. This is done by temporarily merging the small cells into larger, possibly over…
Algebraically stabilized finite element discretizations of scalar steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction equations often provide accurate approximate solutions satisfying the discrete maximum principle (DMP). However, it was observed that a deterioration of the accuracy and convergence rates may occur for some problems if meshes without local symmetries are used. The paper investigates these phenomena both numerically and analytically and the findings are used to design a new algebraic stabilization called Symmetrized Monotone Upwind-type Algebraically Stabilized (SMUAS) method. It is prov…
The objective of this contribution is to develop a convergence analysis for SUPG-stabilized Virtual Element Methods in diffusion-convection problems that is robust also in the convection dominated regime. For the original method introduced in [Benedetto et al, CMAME 2016] we are able to show an "almost uniform" error bound (in the sense that the unique term that depends in an unfavorable way on the parameters is damped by a higher order mesh-size multiplicative factor). We also introduce a novel discretization of the convection term that allows us to develop error estimates that are fully robu…
In this paper, a stabilized second order in time accurate linear exponential time differencing (ETD) scheme for the no-slope-selection thin film growth model is presented. An artificial stabilizing term $Aτ^2\frac{\partialΔ^2 u}{\partial t}$ is added to the physical model to achieve energy stability, with ETD-based multi-step approximations and Fourier collocation spectral method applied in the time integral and spatial discretization of the evolution equation, respectively. Long time energy stability and detailed $\ell^{\infty}(0,T; \ell^2)$ error analysis are provided based on the energy met…

In this paper we develop an a posteriori error analysis for the stationary Stokes-Darcy coupled problem approximated by conforming finite element method on isotropic meshes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{2,3\}$. The approach utilizes a new robust stabilized fully mixed discretization developed by Jiaping Yu et al. (Advances in Difference Equations, SpringerOpen Journal, 2018). The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution plus the stabilization terms. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both r…
The paper presents high-order accurate, energy-, and entropy-stable discretizations constructed from summation-by-parts (SBP) operators. Notably, the discretizations assemble global SBP operators and use continuous solutions, unlike previous efforts that use discontinuous SBP discretizations. Derivative-based dissipation and local-projection stabilization (LPS) are investigated as options for stabilizing the baseline discretization. These stabilizations are equal up to a multiplicative constant in one dimension, but only LPS remains well conditioned for general, multidimensional SBP operators.…
For solving unsteady hyperbolic conservation laws on cut cell meshes, the so called small cell problem is a big issue: one would like to use a time step that is chosen with respect to the background mesh and use the same time step on the potentially arbitrarily small cut cells as well. For explicit time stepping schemes this leads to instabilities. In a recent preprint [arXiv:1906.05642], we propose penalty terms for stabilizing a DG space discretization to overcome this issue for the unsteady linear advection equation. The usage of the proposed stabilization terms results in stable schemes of…
The inverse source problem in electromagnetics has proved quite relevant for a large class of applications. In antenna diagnostics in particular, Love solutions are often sought at the cost of an increase of the dimension of the linear system to be solved. In this work, instead, we present a reduced-in-size single current formulation of the inverse source problem that obtains one of the Love currents via a stable discretization of the Steklov-Poincaré boundary operator leveraging dual functions. The new approach is enriched by theoretical treatments and by a further low-frequency stabilization…
In this study, we present a stabilized finite element analysis for completely unified Stokes-Brinkman problems fully coupled with variable coefficient transient Advection-Diffusion-Reaction equation(VADR). As well we have carried out the stabilized finite element analysis for Stokes-Brinkman model with interface conditions fully coupled with VADR. The viscosity of the fluid, involved in flow problem, depends on the concentration of the solute, whose transport is described by VADR equation. The algebraic subgrid multiscale approach has been employed to arrive at the stabilized coupled variation…
A recent paper [J. A. Evans, D. Kamensky, Y. Bazilevs, "Variational multiscale modeling with discretely divergence-free subscales", Computers & Mathematics with Applications, 80 (2020) 2517-2537] introduced a novel stabilized finite element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which combined residual-based stabilization of advection, energetic stability, and satisfaction of a discrete incompressibility condition. However, the convergence analysis and numerical tests of the cited work were subject to the restrictive assumption of a divergence-conforming choice of velocity and …
In this paper we consider the semi-discretization in space of a first order scalar transport equation. For the space discretization we use standard continuous finite elements. To obtain stability we add a penalty on the jump of the gradient over element faces. We recall some global error estimates for smooth and rough solutions and then prove a new local error estimate for the transient linear transport equation. In particular we show that in the stabilized method the effect of non-smooth features in the solution decay exponentially from the space time zone where the solution is rough so that …
This work extends the concepts of algebraic flux correction and convex limiting to continuous high-order Bernstein finite element discretizations of scalar hyperbolic problems. Using an array of adjustable diffusive fluxes, the standard Galerkin approximation is transformed into a nonlinear high-resolution scheme which has the compact sparsity pattern of the piecewise-linear or multilinear subcell discretization. The representation of this scheme in terms of invariant domain preserving states makes it possible to prove the validity of local discrete maximum principles under CFL-like conditions…
This paper considers the discretization of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations with the family of inf-sup stabilized Scott-Vogelius pairs recently introduced in [John/Li/Merdon/Rui, arXiv:2206.01242, 2022] for the Stokes problem. Therein, the velocity space is obtained by enriching the H^1-conforming Lagrange element space with some H(div)-conforming Raviart-Thomas functions, such that the divergence constraint is satisfied exactly. In these methods arbitrary shape-regular simplicial grids can be used. In the present paper two alternatives for discretizing the convective terms are consi…
