In this paper we develop an a posteriori error analysis for the stationary Stokes-Darcy coupled problem approximated by conforming finite element method on isotropic meshes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{2,3\}$. The approach utilizes a new robust stabilized fully mixed discretization developed by Jiaping Yu et al. (Advances in Difference Equations, SpringerOpen Journal, 2018). The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution plus the stabilization terms. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both reliable and efficient.
In this paper, we study the "a posteriori" error estimate corresponding to the Brinkman-Darcy-Forchheimer problem. We introduce the variational formulation discretised by using the finite element method. Then, we establish an "a posteriori" error estimation with two types of error indicators related to the discretization and to the linearization. Finally, numerical investigations are shown and discussed.
In this work we derive a posteriori error estimates for the convection-diffusion-reaction equation coupled with the Darcy-Forchheimer problem by a nonlinear external source depending on the concentration of the fluid. We introduce the variational formulation associated to the problem, and discretize it by using the finite element method. We prove optimal a posteriori errors with two types of calculable error indicators. The first one is linked to the linearization and the second one to the discretization. Then we find upper and lower error bounds under additional regularity assumptions on the …
This work deals with the a posteriori error estimates for the Darcy-Forchheimer problem. We introduce the corresponding variational formulation and discretize it by using the finite-element method. A posteriori error estimate with two types of computable error indicators is showed. The first one is linked to the linearization and the second one to the discretization. Finally, numerical computations are performed to show the effectiveness of the error indicators.

In this manuscript we focus on the question: what is the correct notion of Stokes-Biot stability? Stokes-Biot stable discretizations have been introduced, independently by several authors, as a means of discretizing Biot's equations of poroelasticity; such schemes retain their stability and convergence properties, with respect to appropriately defined norms, in the context of a vanishing storage coefficient and a vanishing hydraulic conductivity. The basic premise of a Stokes-Biot stable discretization is: one part Stokes stability and one part mixed Darcy stability. In this manuscript we rema…
In this paper, we develop a discretization for the non-linear coupled model of classical Darcy-Forchheimer flow in deformable porous media, an extension of the quasi-static Biot equations. The continuous model exhibits a generalized gradient flow structure, identifying the dissipative character of the physical system. The considered mixed finite element discretization is compatible with this structure, which gives access to a simple proof for the existence, uniqueness, and stability of discrete approximations. Moreover, still within the framework, the discretization allows for the development …
We study the existence of solutions for Darcy's problem coupled with the heat equation under singular forcing; the right-hand side of the heat equation corresponds to a Dirac measure. The studied model allows thermal diffusion and viscosity depending on the temperature. We propose a finite element solution technique and analyze its convergence properties. In the case that the thermal diffusion is constant, we propose an a posteriori error estimator and investigate reliability and efficiency properties. We illustrate the theory with numerical examples.
In this paper we develop an a priori error analysis of a new unified mixed finite element method for the coupling of fluid flow with porous media flow in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\in\{2,3\}$ on isotropic meshes. Flows are governed by the Stokes and Darcy equations, respectively, and the corresponding transmission conditions are given by mass conservation, balance of normal forces, and the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman law. The approach utilizes a modification of the Darcy problem which allows us to apply a variant nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart finite element to the whole coupled Stokes-Darcy problem. The w…

We consider the problem of iteratively solving large and sparse double saddle-point systems arising from the stationary Stokes-Darcy equations in two dimensions, discretized by the Marker-and-Cell (MAC) finite difference method. We analyze the eigenvalue distribution of a few ideal block preconditioners. We then derive practical preconditioners that are based on approximations of Schur complements that arise in a block decomposition of the double saddle-point matrix. We show that including the interface conditions in the preconditioners is key in the pursuit of scalability. Numerical results s…
We construct mesh-independent and parameter-robust monolithic solvers for the coupled primal Stokes-Darcy problem. Three different formulations and their discretizations in terms of conforming and non-conforming finite element methods and finite volume methods are considered. In each case, robust preconditioners are derived using a unified theoretical framework. In particular, the suggested preconditioners utilize operators in fractional Sobolev spaces. Numerical experiments demonstrate the parameter-robustness of the proposed solvers.
In this paper we analyze a posteriori error estimates for a mixed formulation of the linear elasticity eigenvalue problem. A posteriori estimators for the nearly and perfectly compressible elasticity spectral problems are proposed. With a post-process argument, we are able to prove reliability and efficiency for the proposed estimators. The numerical method is based in Raviart-Thomas elements to approximate the pseudostress and piecewise polynomials for the displacement. We illustrate our results with numerical tests.
In this paper we develop a new a posteriori error analysis for the Monge-Ampère equation approximated by conforming finite element method on isotropic meshes in 2D. The approach utilizes a slight variant of the mixed discretization proposed by Gerard Awanou and Hengguang Li in International Journal of Numerical Analysis and Modeling, 11(4):745-761, 2014. The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both reliable and efficient.
In the flow and transport numerical simulation, mesh adaptivity strategy is important in reducing the usage of CPU time and memory. The refinement based on the pressure error estimator is commonly-used approach without considering the flux error which plays important role in coupling flow and transport systems. We derive a posteriori error estimators for Enhanced Velocity Mixed Finite Element Method (EVMFEM) in the incompressible Darcy flow. We show numerically difference of the explicit residual based error estimator and implicit error estimators, where Arbogast and Chen post-processing proce…
We present an equilibration-based a posteriori error estimator for Nédélec element discretizations of the magnetostatic problem. The estimator is obtained by adding a gradient correction to the estimator for Nédélec elements of arbitrary degree presented in [J. Gedicke, S. Geevers, and I. Perugia. An equilibrated a posteriori error estimator for arbitrary-order Nédélec elements for magnetostatic problems. Journal of Scientific Computing, 83:1-23, 2020]. This new estimator is proven to be reliable, with reliability constant 1, and efficient, with an efficiency constant that is independent of th…
We propose two different discrete formulations for the weak imposition of the Neumann boundary conditions of the Darcy flow. The Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element on both triangular and quadrilateral meshes is considered for both methods. One is a consistent discretization depending on a weighting parameter scaling as $\mathcal O(h^{-1})$, while the other is a penalty-type formulation obtained as the discretization of a perturbation of the original problem and relies on a parameter scaling as $\mathcal O(h^{-k-1})$, $k$ being the order of the Raviart-Thomas space. We rigorously prove that bo…
We derive an equilibrated a posteriori error estimator for the space (semi) discretization of the scalar wave equation by finite elements. In the idealized setting where time discretization is ignored and the simulation time is large, we provide fully-guaranteed upper bounds that are asymptotically constant-free and show that the proposed estimator is efficient and polynomial-degree-robust, meaning that the efficiency constant does not deteriorate as the approximation order is increased. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to derive provably efficient error estimates for the w…
We define and analyse a least-squares finite element method for a first-order reformulation of a scaled Brinkman model of fluid flow through porous media. We introduce a pseudostress variable that allows to eliminate the pressure variable from the system. It can be recovered by a simple post-processing. It is shown that the least-squares functional is uniformly equivalent, i.e., independent of the singular perturbation parameter, to a parameter dependent norm. This norm equivalence implies that the least-squares functional evaluated in the discrete solution provides an efficient and reliable a…
Time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative are considered. For such equations, we explore and further develop the new methodology of the a-posteriori error estimation and adaptive time stepping proposed in [7]. We improve the earlier time stepping algorithm based on this theory, and specifically address its stable and efficient implementation in the context of high-order methods. The considered methods include an L1-2 method and continuous collocation methods of arbitrary order, for which adaptive temporal meshes are shown to yield optimal convergence rates in the presen…
We consider finite element discretizations of Maxwell's equations coupled with a non-local hydrodynamic Drude model that accurately accounts for electron motions in metallic nanostructures. Specifically, we focus on a posteriori error estimation and mesh adaptivity, which is of particular interest since the electromagnetic field usually exhibits strongly localized features near the interface between metals and their surrounding media. We propose a novel residual-based error estimator that is shown to be reliable and efficient. We also present a set of numerical examples where the estimator dri…
We present an a posteriori error analysis for one-dimensional random hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. For the discretization of the random space we consider the Non-Intrusive Spectral Projection method, the spatio-temporal discretization uses the Runge--Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin method. We derive an a posteriori error estimator using smooth reconstructions of the numerical solution, which combined with the relative entropy stability framework yields computable error bounds for the space-stochastic discretization error. Moreover, we show that the estimator admits a splitting into a s…
This report considers a variable step time discretization algorithm proposed by Dahlquist, Liniger and Nevanlinna and applies the algorithm to the unsteady Stokes/Darcy model. Although long-time forgotten and little explored, the algorithm performs advantages in variable timestep analysis of various fluid flow systems, including the coupled Stokes/Darcy model. The paper proves that the approximate solutions to the unsteady Stokes/Darcy model are unconditionally stable due to the G-stability of the algorithm. Also variable time stepping error analysis follows from the combination of G-stability…
We consider a coupled model of free-flow and porous medium flow, governed by stationary Stokes and Darcy flow, respectively. The coupling between the two systems is enforced by introducing a single variable representing the normal flux across the interface. The problem is reduced to a system concerning only the interface flux variable, which is shown to be well-posed in appropriately weighted norms. An iterative solution scheme is then proposed to solve the reduced problem such that mass is conserved at each iteration. By introducing a preconditioner based on the weighted norms from the analys…
This paper proposes a parallel numerical algorithm to simulate the flow and the transport in a discrete fracture network taking into account the mass exchanges with the surrounding matrix. The discretization of the Darcy fluxes is based on the Vertex Approximate Gradient finite volume scheme adapted to polyhedral meshes and to heterogeneous anisotropic media, and the transport equation is discretized by a first order upwind scheme combined with an Euler explicit integration in time. The parallelization is based on the SPMD (Single Program, Multiple Data) paradigm and relies on a distribution o…
We consider the Virtual Element method (VEM) introduced by Beirão da Veiga, Lovadina and Vacca in 2016 for the numerical solution of the steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations; the method has arbitrary order $k \geq 2$ and guarantees divergence-free velocities. For such discretization, we develop a residual-based a posteriori error estimator, which is a combination of standard terms in VEM analysis (residual terms, data oscillation, and VEM stabilization), plus some other terms originated by the VEM discretization of the nonlinear convective term. We show that a linear combination of t…

A posteriori error estimates for mixed finite element discretization of the multigroup Neutron Simplified Transport equations with Robin boundary condition
We construct a space-time parallel method for solving parabolic partial differential equations by coupling the Parareal algorithm in time with overlapping domain decomposition in space. The goal is to obtain a discretization consisting of "local" problems that can be solved on parallel computers efficiently. However, this introduces significant sources of error that must be evaluated. Reformulating the original Parareal algorithm as a variational method and implementing a finite element discretization in space enables an adjoint-based a posteriori error analysis to be performed. Through an app…
We consider residual-based a posteriori error estimators for Galerkin-type discretizations of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. We focus on configurations where the frequency is high, or close to a resonance frequency, and derive reliability and efficiency estimates. In contrast to previous related works, our estimates are frequency-explicit. In particular, our key contribution is to show that even if the constants appearing in the reliability and efficiency estimates may blow up on coarse meshes, they become independent of the frequency for sufficiently refined meshes. Such results were prev…
