We consider finite element approximations of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem in two dimensions. We prove, in certain settings, convergence of the discrete eigenvalues using Lagrange finite elements. In particular, we prove convergence in three scenarios: piecewise linear elements on Powell--Sabin triangulations, piecewise quadratic elements on Clough--Tocher triangulations, and piecewise quartics (and higher) elements on general shape-regular triangulations. We provide numerical experiments that support the theoretical results. The computations also show that, on general triangulations, the eigenvalue approximations are very sensitive to nearly singular vertices, i.e., vertices that fall on exactly two "almost" straight lines.
We prove convergence of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem using quadratic or higher Lagrange finite elements on Worsey-Farin splits in three dimensions. To do this, we construct two Fortin-like operators to prove uniform convergence of the corresponding source problem. We present numerical experiments to illustrate the theoretical results.
We propose to use a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method combined with the continuous Galerkin (CG) method to approximate Maxwell's equations. We make two contributions in this paper. First, even though there are many papers using HDG methods to approximate Maxwell's equations, to our knowledge they all assume that the coefficients are smooth (or constant). Here, we derive optimal convergence estimates for our HGD-CG approximation when the electromagnetic coefficients are {\em piecewise} smooth. This requires new techniques of analysis. Second, we use CG elements to approximate the…
The modified Maxwell's Stekloff eigenvalue problem arises recently from the inverse electromagnetic scattering theory for inhomogeneous media. This paper contains a rigorous analysis of both the eigenvalue problem and the associated source problem on Lipschitz polyhedra. A new finite element method is proposed to compute Stekloff eigenvalues. By applying the Babuska-Osborn theory, we prove an error estimate without additional regularity assumptions. Numerical results are presented for validation.

We solve Maxwell's eigenvalue problem via isogeometric boundary elements and a contour integral method. We discuss the analytic properties of the discretisation, outline the implementation, and showcase numerical examples.
In this paper, based on a domain decomposition (DD) method, we shall propose an efficient two-level preconditioned Helmholtz-Jacobi-Davidson (PHJD) method for solving the algebraic eigenvalue problem resulting from the edge element approximation of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem. In order to eliminate the components in orthogonal complement space of the eigenvalue, we shall solve a parallel preconditioned system and a Helmholtz projection system together in fine space. After one coarse space correction in each iteration and minimizing the Rayleigh quotient in a small dimensional Davidson space…
A method to compute guaranteed lower bounds to the eigenvalues of the Maxwell system in two or three space dimensions is proposed as a generalization of the method of Liu and Oishi [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 51, 2013] for the Laplace operator. The main tool is the computation of an explicit upper bound to the error of the Galerkin projection. The error is split in two parts: one part is controlled by a hypercircle principle and an auxiliary eigenvalue problem. The second part requires a perturbation argument for the right-hand side replaced by a suitable piecewise polynomial. The latter error is c…

The transmission eigenvalue problem arises from the inverse scattering theory for inhomogeneous media and has important applications in many qualitative methods. The problem is posted as a system of two second order partial differential equations and is essentially nonlinear, non-selfadjoint, and of higher order. It is nontrivial to develop effective numerical methods and the proof of convergence is challenging. In this paper, we formulate the transmission eigenvalue problem for anisotropic media as an eigenvalue problem of a holomorphic Fredholm operator function of index zero. The Lagrange f…
This paper focuses on studying the bifurcation analysis of the eigenstructure of the $γ$-parameterized generalized eigenvalue problem ($γ$-GEP) arising in three-dimensional (3D) source-free Maxwell's equations with Pasteur media, where $γ$ is the magnetoelectric chirality parameter. For the weakly coupled case, namely, $γ< γ_{*} \equiv$ critical value, the $γ$-GEP is positive definite, which has been well-studied by Chern et.\ al, 2015. For the strongly coupled case, namely, $γ> γ_{*}$, the $γ$-GEP is no longer positive definite, introducing a totally different and complicated structure. For t…
We consider the calculation of the band structure of frequency dependent photonic crystals. The associated eigenvalue problem is nonlinear and it is challenging to develop effective convergent numerical methods. In this paper, the band structure problem is formulated as the eigenvalue problem of a holomorphic Fredholm operator function of index zero. Lagrange finite elements are used to discretize the operator function. Then the convergence of the eigenvalues is proved using the abstract approximation theory for holomorphic operator functions. A spectral indicator method is developed to practi…
We show that spectral data of transfer operators given by holomorphic data can be approximated using an effective numerical scheme based on Lagrange interpolation. In particular, we show that for one-dimensional systems satisfying certain complex contraction properties, spectral data of the approximants converge exponentially to the spectral data of the transfer operator with the exponential rate determined by the respective complex contraction ratios of the underlying systems. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this scheme by numerically computing eigenvalues of transfer operators arising fr…
An Interior Penalty Method with $C^0$ Finite Elements for the Approximation of the Maxwell Equations in Heterogeneous Media: Convergence Analysis with Minimal Regularity
The electromagnetic field distribution as well as the resonating frequency of various modes in superconducting cavities used in particle accelerators for example are sensitive to small geometry deformations. The occurring variations are motivated by measurements of an available set of resonators from which we propose to extract a small number of relevant and independent deformations by using a truncated Karhunen-Loève expansion. The random deformations are used in an expressive uncertainty quantification workflow to determine the sensitivity of the eigenmodes. For the propagation of uncertaint…
