An adaptive modified weak Galerkin method (AmWG) for an elliptic problem is studied in this paper, in addition to its convergence and optimality. The modified weak Galerkin bilinear form is simplified without the need of the skeletal variable, and the approximation space is chosen as the discontinuous polynomial space as in the discontinuous Galerkin method. Upon a reliable residual-based a posteriori error estimator, an adaptive algorithm is proposed together with its convergence and quasi-optimality proved for the lowest order case. The primary tool is to bridge the connection between the modified weak Galerkin method and the Crouzeix-Raviart nonconforming finite element. Unlike the traditional convergence analysis for methods with a discontinuous polynomial approximation space, the convergence of AmWG is penalty parameter free. Numerical results are presented to support the theoretical results.
Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin methods are some of the most successful solution procedures in numerical analysis. Their popularity is mainly due to the optimality properties of their approximate solution. We show that these features carry over to the (Petrov-)Galerkin methods applied for the solution of linear matrix equations. Some novel considerations about the use of Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin schemes in the numerical treatment of general linear matrix equations are expounded and the use of constrained minimization techniques in the Petrov-Galerkin framework is proposed.
The subject of this work is a new stochastic Galerkin method for second-order elliptic partial differential equations with random diffusion coefficients. It combines operator compression in the stochastic variables with tree-based spline wavelet approximation in the spatial variables. Relying on a multilevel expansion of the given random diffusion coefficient, the method is shown to achieve optimal computational complexity up to a logarithmic factor. In contrast to existing results, this holds in particular when the achievable convergence rate is limited by the regularity of the random field, …
In this paper, we design and analysis a modified weak Galerkin (MWG) finite element method for $\boldsymbol{H}(\mathrm{curl})-$elliptic problem. We first introduce a new discrete weak curl operator and the MWG finite element space. The modified weak Galerkin method does not require the penalty parameter by comparing with traditional DG methods. We prove optimal error estimates in energy norm. At last, we provide the numerical results to confirm these theoretical results.
In this paper, a residual-type a posteriori error estimator is proposed and analyzed for a modified weak Galerkin finite element method solving linear elasticity problems. The estimator is proven to be both reliable and efficient because it provides upper and lower bounds on the actual error in a discrete energy norm. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the this error estimator.
We devise and analyze a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for nonlinear and nonsmooth variational problems. Discrete duality relations are derived that lead to optimal error estimates in the case of total-variation regularized minimization or obstacle problems. The analysis provides explicit estimates that precisely determine the role of stabilization parameters. Numerical experiments suppport the optimality of the estimates.
We describe a numerical method for the solution of acoustic exterior scattering problems based on the time-domain boundary integral representation of the solution. As the spatial discretization of the resulting time-domain boundary integral equation we use either the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) or the Galerkin boundary element method (BEM). In time we apply either a standard convolution quadrature (CQ) based on an A-stable linear multistep method or a modified CQ scheme. It is well-known that the standard low-order CQ schemes for hyperbolic problems suffer from strong dissipation and…

In this paper, we propose a Galerkin finite element method for the elliptic optimal control problem governed by the Riesz space-fractional PDEs on 2D domains with control variable being discretized by variational discretization technique. The optimality condition is derived and priori error estimates of control, costate and state variables are successfully established. Numerical test is carried out to illustrate the accuracy performance of this approach.
A modified primal-dual weak Galerkin (M-PDWG) finite element method is designed for the second order elliptic equation in non-divergence form. Compared with the existing PDWG methods proposed in \cite{wwnondiv}, the system of equations resulting from the M-PDWG scheme could be equivalently simplified into one equation involving only the primal variable by eliminating the dual variable (Lagrange multiplier). The resulting simplified system thus has significantly fewer degrees of freedom than the one resulting from existing PDWG scheme. In addition, the condition number of the simplified system …
This paper investigate on numerical analysis on modified Single-layer approach to exterior Dirichlet problem of Laplace equation. We complete the convergence and error analysis of Petrov-Galerkin and Galerkin-Collocation methods with trigonometric basis for the induced modified Symm's integral equation of the first kind on analytic boundary. Besides, utilizing the composite trapezial quadrature formula and trigonometric interpolation to handle the singularity in modified logarithmic kernel, we establish the numerical procedure for implementation. On these numerical examples, we compare the eff…
An energy conservative discontinuous Galerkin scheme for a generalised third order KdV type equation is designed. Based on the conservation principle, we propose techniques that allow for the derivation of optimal a priori bounds for the linear KdV equation and a posteriori bounds for the linear and modified KdV equation. Extensive numerical experiments showcasing the good long time behaviour of the scheme are summarised which are in agreement with the analysis proposed.
We study an identification problem which estimates the parameters of the underlying random distribution for uncertain scalar conservation laws. The hyperbolic equations are discretized with the so-called discontinuous stochastic Galerkin method, i.e., using a spatial discontinuous Galerkin scheme and a Multielement stochastic Galerkin ansatz in the random space. We assume an uncertain flux or uncertain initial conditions and that a data set of an observed solution is given. The uncertainty is assumed to be uniformly distributed on an unknown interval and we focus on identifying the correct end…
On bounded and simply connected planar analytic domain $ Ω$, by $ 2π$ periodic parametric representation of boundary curve $ \partial Ω$, Symm's integral equation of the first kind takes form $ K Ψ= g $, where $ K $ is seen as an operator mapping from $ L^2(0,2π) $ to itself. The classical result show complete convergence and error analysis in $ L^2 $ setting for least squares, dual least squares, Bubnov-Galerkin methods with Fourier basis when $ g \in H^r(0,2π), \ r \geq 1 $. In this paper, weakening the boundary $ \partial Ω$ from analytic to $ C^3 $ class, we maintain the convergence and er…
The discontinuous Galerkin dG method provides a robust and flexible technique for the time integration of fractional diffusion problems. However, a practical implementation uses coefficients defined by integrals that are not easily evaluated. We describe specialised quadrature techniques that efficiently maintain the overall accuracy of the dG method. In addition, we observe in numerical experiments that known superconvergence properties of dG time stepping for classical diffusion problems carry over in a modified form to the fractional-order setting.
Stochastic Galerkin finite element method (SGFEM) provides an efficient alternative to traditional sampling methods for the numerical solution of linear elliptic partial differential equations with parametric or random inputs. However, computing stochastic Galerkin approximations for a given problem requires the solution of large coupled systems of linear equations. Therefore, an effective and bespoke iterative solver is a key ingredient of any SGFEM implementation. In this paper, we analyze a class of truncation preconditioners for SGFEM. Extending the idea of the mean-based preconditioner, t…
Divergence-free discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element methods offer a suitable discretization for the pointwise divergence-free numerical solution of Borrvall and Petersson's model for the topology optimization of fluids in Stokes flow [Topology optimization of fluids in Stokes flow, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids 41 (1) (2003) 77--107]. The convergence results currently found in literature only consider H^1-conforming discretizations for the velocity. In this work, we extend the numerical analysis of Papadopoulos and Suli to divergence-free DG methods with an inter…
A modified equation analysis for immersed boundary methods based on volume penalization: applications to linear advection-diffusion and high-order discontinuous Galerkin schemes
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments …
We combine the newly-constructed Galerkin difference basis with the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method for wave equations in second order form. The approximation properties of the resulting method are excellent and the allowable time steps are large compared to traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods. The one drawback of the combined approach is the cost of inversion of the local mass matrix. We demonstrate that for constant coefficient problems on Cartesian meshes this bottleneck can be removed by the use of a modified Galerkin difference basis. For variable coefficients or non-Car…
We propose an explicit, single step discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method on moving grids using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach for one dimensional Euler equations. The grid is moved with the local fluid velocity modified by some smoothing, which is found to considerably reduce the numerical dissipation introduced by Riemann solvers. The scheme preserves constant states for any mesh motion and we also study its positivity preservation property. Local grid refinement and coarsening are performed to maintain the mesh quality and avoid the appearance of very small or large cells. Se…
We design an adaptive virtual element method (AVEM) of lowest order over triangular meshes with hanging nodes in 2d, which are treated as polygons. AVEM hinges on the stabilization-free a posteriori error estimators recently derived in [8]. The crucial property, that also plays a central role in this paper, is that the stabilization term can be made arbitrarily small relative to the a posteriori error estimators upon increasing the stabilization parameter. Our AVEM concatenates two modules, GALERKIN and DATA. The former deals with piecewise constant data and is shown in [8] to be a contraction…
In this paper, we develop bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for chemical reactive flows. There are several difficulties in constructing suitable numerical schemes. First of all, the density and internal energy are positive, and the mass fraction of each species is between 0 and 1. Secondly, due to the rapid reaction rate, the system may contain stiff sources, and the strong-stability-preserving explicit Runge-Kutta method may result in limited time step sizes. To obtain physically relevant numerical approximations, we apply the bound-preserving technique to the DG methods. F…
We approximate the solution of the Stokes equations by a new quasi-optimal and pressure robust discontinuous Galerkin discretization of arbitrary order. This means quasi-optimality of the velocity error independent of the pressure. Moreover, the discretization is well-defined for any load which is admissible for the continuous problem and it also provides classical quasi-optimal estimates for the sum of velocity and pressure errors. The key design principle is a careful discretization of the load involving a linear operator, which maps discontinuous Galerkin test functions onto conforming ones…

The differential Riccati equation appears in different fields of applied mathematics like control and system theory. Recently Galerkin methods based on Krylov subspaces were developed for the autonomous differential Riccati equation. These methods overcome the prohibitively large storage requirements and computational costs of the numerical solution. In view of memory efficient approximation, we review and extend known solution formulas and identify invariant subspaces for a possibly low-dimensional solution representation. Based on these theoretical findings, we propose a Galerkin projection …
We develop a convergence theory of space-time discretizations for the linear, 2nd-order wave equation in polygonal domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, possibly occupied by piecewise homogeneous media with different propagation speeds. Building on an unconditionally stable space-time DG formulation developed in [Moiola, Perugia 2018], we (a) prove optimal convergence rates for the space-time scheme with local isotropic corner mesh refinement on the spatial domain, and (b) demonstrate numerically optimal convergence rates of a suitable \emph{sparse} space-time version of the DG scheme. The latter sc…
