We propose a modified local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for second--order elliptic problems that does not require extrinsic penalization to ensure stability. Stability is instead achieved by showing a discrete Poincaré--Friedrichs inequality for the discrete gradient that employs a lifting of the jumps with one polynomial degree higher than the scalar approximation space. Our analysis covers rather general simplicial meshes with the possibility of hanging nodes.
In this paper, we study the convergence of adaptive mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for H(curl)-elliptic problems. We first get the mixed model of H(curl)-elliptic problem by introducing a new intermediate variable. Then we discuss the continuous variational problem and discrete variational problem, which based on interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin approximation. Next, we construct the corresponding posteriori error indicator, and prove the contraction of the summation of the energy error and the scaled error indicator. At last, we confirm and illustrate the theoretic…
In this paper, we design the first residual type a posteriori error estimator for mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the H(curl)-elliptic problems. Then we prove that our residual based a posteriori error indicator is both reliable and efficient. At last, we present some numerical experiments to validate the performance of the indicator within an adaptive mesh refinement procedure.
In this paper, we present a study on the effect of penalty term in the mixed Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method for the biharmonic equation proposed by \cite{gudi2008mixed}. The proposed mixed Discontinuous Galerkin Method showed sub-optimal rates of convergence for piecewise quadratic elements and no significant convergence rates for piecewise linear elements. We show that by choosing the penalty term proportional to $|e_k|^{-1}$ instead of $|e_k|^{-3}$, ensures an optimal rate of convergence for the approximation, including for piecewise linear elements. Finally, we present numeric…
We prove in an abstract setting that standard (continuous) Galerkin finite element approximations are the limit of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin approximations as the penalty parameter tends to infinity. We apply this result to equations of non-negative characteristic form and the non-linear, time dependent system of incompressible miscible displacement. Moreover, we investigate varying the penalty parameter on only a subset of a triangulation and the effects of local super-penalization on the stability of the method, resulting in a partly continuous, partly discontinuous method in t…
In this paper, the optimal choice of the interior penalty parameter of the discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for both the elliptic problems and the Biot's systems are studied by utilizing the neural network and machine learning. It is crucial to choose the optimal interior penalty parameter, which is not too small or not too large for the stability, robustness, and efficiency of the numerical discretized solutions. Both linear regression and nonlinear artificial neural network methods are employed and compared using several numerical experiments to illustrate the capability of our …
We present the analysis for an $hp$ weak Galerkin-FEM for singularly perturbed reaction-convection-diffusion problems in one-dimension. Under the analyticity of the data assumption, we establish robust exponential convergence, when the error is measured in the energy norm, as the degree $p$ of the approximating polynomials is increased. The Spectral Boundary Layer mesh is used, which is the minimal (layer adapted) mesh for such problems. Numerical examples illustrating the theory are also presented.
In this paper, we study the convergence of the nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method on a Bakhvalov-type mesh for the first time. For this purpose, a new composite interpolation is designed, which solves the inherent difficulty of analysis on Bakhvalov-type meshes. More specifically, Gauss Radau interpolation and Gauss Lobatto interpolation are used outside and inside the layer, respectively. On the basis of that, by choosing the specific values of the penalty parameters at different mesh points, we derive the supercloseness of $k+1/2$th order ($k\ge 1$), and prove the convergen…
An hp-version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) method under nonconforming meshes is proposed to solve the quad-curl eigenvalue problem. We prove well-posedness of the numerical scheme for the quad-curl equation and then derive an error estimate in a mesh-dependent norm, which is optimal with respect to h but has different p-version error bounds under conforming and nonconforming tetrahedron meshes. The hp-version discrete compactness of the DG space is established for the convergence proof. The performance of the method is demonstrated by numerical experiments using conforming/no…
In this paper, numerical experiments are carried out to investigate the impact of penalty parameters in the numerical traces on the resonance errors of high order multiscale discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods [6, 7] for one-dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation. Previous work showed that penalty parameters were required to be positive in error analysis, but the methods with zero penalty parameters worked fine in numerical simulations on coarse meshes. In this work, by performing extensive numerical experiments, we discover that zero penalty parameters lead to resonance errors in the mul…

In this paper, we consider numerical solutions of a time domain acoustic-elastic wave interaction problem which occurs between a bounded penetrable elastic body and a compressible inviscid fluid. It is also called the fluid-solid interaction problem. Firstly, an artificial boundary is introduced to transform the original transmission problem into a problem in a bounded region, and then its well-posed results are presented. We then employ a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the solution of the reduced interaction problem consisting of second-order wave equations. A pr…
We develop a basic convergence analysis for an adaptive $\textsf{C}^0\textsf{IPG}$ method for the Biharmonic problem, which provides convergence without rates for all practically relevant marking strategies and all penalty parameters assuring coercivity of the method. The analysis hinges on embedding properties of (broken) Sobolev and BV spaces, and the construction of a suitable limit space. In contrast to the convergence result of adaptive discontinuous Galerkin methods for elliptic PDEs, by Kreuzer and Georgoulis [Math. Comp. 87 (2018), no.~314, 2611--2640], here we have to deal with the fa…
In this paper, we propose a class of adaptive multiresolution (also called adaptive sparse grid) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for simulating scalar wave equations in second order form in space. The two key ingredients of the schemes include an interior penalty DG formulation in the adaptive function space and two classes of multiwavelets for achieving multiresolution. In particular, the orthonormal Alpert's multiwavelets are used to express the DG solution in terms of a hierarchical structure, and the interpolatory multiwavelets are further introduced to enhance computational efficiency…
The paper considers a class of parametric elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs), where the coefficients and the right-hand side function depend on infinitely many (uncertain) parameters. We introduce a two-level a posteriori estimator to control the energy error in multilevel stochastic Galerkin approximations for this class of PDE problems. We prove that the two-level estimator always provides a lower bound for the unknown approximation error, while the upper bound is equivalent to a saturation assumption. We propose and empirically compare three adaptive algorithms, where the struct…
We present the analysis of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin Isogeometric Analysis (dGIGA) for the biharmonic problem on orientable surfaces $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3.$ Here, we consider a surface consisting of several non-overlapping patches as typical in multipatch dGIGA. Due to the non-overlapping nature of the patches, we construct NURBS approximation spaces which are discontinuous across the patch interfaces via a penalty scheme. By an appropriate discrete norm, we present \textit{a priori} error estimates for the non-symmetric, symmetric and semi-symmetric interior penalty methods. Fi…

A Finite-Volume based POD-Galerkin reduced order model is developed for fluid dynamics problems where the (time-dependent) boundary conditions are controlled using two different boundary control strategies: the lifting function method, whose aim is to obtain homogeneous basis functions for the reduced basis space and the penalty method where the boundary conditions are enforced in the reduced order model using a penalty factor. The penalty method is improved by using an iterative solver for the determination of the penalty factor rather than tuning the factor with a sensitivity analysis or num…
We consider a linear elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) with a generic uniformly bounded parametric coefficient. The solution to this PDE problem is approximated in the framework of stochastic Galerkin finite element methods. We perform a posteriori error analysis of Galerkin approximations and derive a reliable and efficient estimate for the energy error in these approximations. Practical versions of this error estimate are discussed and tested numerically for a model problem with non-affine parametric representation of the coefficient. Furthermore, we use the error reduction indica…
In this note we consider the continuous Galerkin time stepping method of arbitrary order as a possible discretization scheme of nonlinear initial value problems. In addition, we develop and generalize a well known existing result for the discrete solution by applying a general linearizing procedure to the nonlinear discrete scheme including also the simplified Newton solution procedure. In particular, the presented existence results are implied by choosing sufficient small time steps locally. Furthermore, the established existence results are independent of the local approximation order. Moreo…
A novel discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is developed to solve time-dependent bi-harmonic type equations involving fourth derivatives in one and multiple space dimensions. We present the spatial DG discretization based on a mixed formulation and central interface numerical fluxes so that the resulting semi-discrete schemes are $L^2$ stable even without interior penalty. For time discretization, we use Crank-Nicolson so that the resulting scheme is unconditionally stable and second order in time. We present the optimal $L^2$ error estimate of $O(h^{k+1})$ for polynomials of degree $k$ for sem…
Duality analysis of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods under minimal regularity and application to the a priori and a posteriori error analysis of Helmholtz problems
Classical interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) methods for diffusion problems require a number of assumptions on the local variation of mesh-size, polynomial degree, and of the diffusion coefficient to determine the values of the, so-called, discontinuity-penalization parameter and/or to perform error analysis. Variants of IPDG methods involving weighted averages of the gradient of the approximate solution have been proposed in the context of high-contrast diffusion coefficients to mitigate the dependence of the contrast in the stability and in the error analysis. Here, we present a …
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments …

When solving the Helmholtz equation numerically, the accuracy of numerical solution deteriorates as the wave number $k$ increases, known as `pollution effect' which is directly related to the phase difference between the exact and numerical solutions, caused by the numerical dispersion. In this paper, we propose a dispersion analysis for the continuous interior penalty finite element method (CIP-FEM) and derive an explicit formula of the penalty parameter for the $p^{\rm th}$ order CIP-FEM on tensor product (Cartesian) meshes, with which the phase difference is reduced from $\mathcal{O}\big(k(…
