In this article we consider the anisotropic Calderon problem and related inverse problems. The approach is based on limiting Carleman weights, introduced in Kenig-Sjoestrand-Uhlmann (Ann. of Math. 2007) in the Euclidean case. We characterize those Riemannian manifolds which admit limiting Carleman weights, and give a complex geometrical optics construction for a class of such manifolds. This is used to prove uniqueness results for anisotropic inverse problems, via the attenuated geodesic X-ray transform. Earlier results in dimension $n \geq 3$ were restricted to real-analytic metrics.
In the paper arXiv:1411.4887 [math.AP] it is shown that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit global limiting Carleman weights is open and dense, by studying the conformally invariant Weyl and Cotton tensors. In the paper arXiv:1011.2507 [math.DG] it is shown that the set of Riemannian metrics which do not admit local limiting Carleman weights at any point is residual, showing that it contains the set of metrics for which there are no local conformal diffeomorphisms between any distinct open subsets. This paper is a continuation of arXiv:1411.4887 [math.AP] in order to prove that th…
In this note we prove that a generic Riemannian manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ does not admit any nontrivial local conformal diffeomorphisms. This is a conformal analog of a result of Sunada concerning local isometries, and makes precise the principle that generic manifolds in high dimensions do not have conformal symmetries. Consequently, generic manifolds of dimension $\geq 3$ do not admit nontrivial conformal Killing vector fields near any point. As an application to the inverse problem of Calderón on manifolds, this implies that generic manifolds of dimension $\geq 3$ do not admit limiting…
We analyze the structure of the set of limiting Carleman weights in all conformally flat manifolds, 3-manifolds, and 4-manifolds. In particular we give a new proof of the classification of Euclidean limiting Carleman weights, and show that there are only three basic such weights up to the action of the conformal group. In dimension three we show that if the manifold is not conformally flat, there could be one or two limiting Carleman weights. We also characterize the metrics that have more than one limiting Carleman weight. In dimension four we obtain a complete spectrum of examples according …
We consider a second-order selfadjoint elliptic operator with an anisotropic diffusion matrix having a jump across a smooth hypersurface. We prove the existence of a weight-function such that a Carleman estimate holds true. We moreover prove that the conditions imposed on the weight function are necessary.
We give a necessary condition for a Riemannian manifold to admit limiting Carleman weights in terms of the Weyl tensor (in dimensions 4 and higher) and the Cotton-York tensor in dimension 3. As an application we provide explicit examples of manifolds without limiting Carleman weights and show that the set of such metrics on a given manifold contains an open and dense set.
By using some deep tools from microlocal analysis, J. Le Rousseau and L. Robbiano (Invent. Math., 183 (2011), 245--336) established several Carleman estimates for parabolic operators with isotropic diffusion coefficients which have jumps at interfaces. In this paper, we revisit the same problem but for the general case of anisotropic diffusion coefficients. Our main tools are a pointwise estimate for parabolic operators and a suitable chosen weight function.
We consider an anisotropic hyperbolic equation with memory term: $$ \partial_t^2 u(x,t) = \sum_{i,j=1}^n \partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_ju) + \int^t_0 \sum_{| α| \le 2} b_α(x,t,η)\partial_x^αu(x,η) dη+ F(x,t) $$ for $x \in Ω$ and $t\in (0,T)$ or $\in (-T,T)$, which is a model equation for viscoelasticity. First we establish a Carleman estimate for this equation with overdetermining boundary data on a suitable lateral subboundary $Γ\times (-T,T)$. Second we apply the Carleman estimate to establish a both-sided estimate of $| u(\cdot,0)|_{H^3(Ω)}$ by $\partial_νu|_{Γ\times (0,T)}$ under the assump…
We consider limiting Carleman weights for Dirac operators and prove corresponding Carleman estimates. In particular, we show that limiting Carleman weights for the Laplacian also serve as limiting weights for Dirac operators. As an application we consider the inverse problem of recovering a Lipschitz continuous magnetic field and electric potential from boundary measurements for the Pauli Dirac operator.
In https://arxiv.org/abs/1411.4887, we found some necessary conditions for a Riemannian manifold to admit a local limiting Carleman weight (LCW), based upon the Cotton-York tensor in dimension $3$ and the Weyl tensor in dimension $4$. In this paper, we find further necessary conditions for the existence of local LCWs that are often sufficient. For a manifold of dimension $3$ or $4$, we classify the possible Cotton-York, or Weyl tensors, and provide a mechanism to find out whether the manifold admits local LCW for each type of tensor. In particular, we show that a product of two surfaces admits…
In this paper we prove a Hölder propagation of smallness for solutions to second order parabolic equations whose general anisotropic leading coefficient has a jump at an interface. We assume that the leading coefficient is Lipschitz continuous with respect to the parabolic distance on both sides of the interface. The main effort consists in proving a local Carleman estimate for this parabolic operator.
In this paper, we study an inverse problem for linear parabolic system with variable diffusion coefficients subject to dynamic boundary conditions. We prove a global Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem involving a simultaneous recovery of two source terms from a single measurement and interior observations, based on a recent Carleman estimate for such problems.
In this article we prove $L^p$ estimates for resolvents of Laplace-Beltrami operators on compact Riemannian manifolds, generalizing results of Kenig, Ruiz and Sogge in the Euclidean case and Shen for the torus. We follow Sogge and construct Hadamard's parametrix, then use classical boundedness results on integral operators with oscillatory kernels related to the Carleson and Sjölin condition. Our initial motivation was to obtain $L^p$ Carleman estimates with limiting Carleman weights generalizing those of Jerison and Kenig; we illustrate the pertinence of $L^p$ resolvent estimates by showing t…
We prove a sharp three sphere inequality for solutions to third order perturbations of a product of two second order elliptic operators with real coefficients. Then we derive various kinds of quantitative estimates of unique continuation for the anisotropic plate equation. Among these, we prove a stability estimate for the Cauchy problem for such an equation and we illustrate some applications to the size estimates of an unknown inclusion made of different material that might be present in the plate. The paper is self-contained and the Carleman estimate, from which the sharp three sphere inequ…
In a previous article of Dos Santos Ferreira, Kenig, Salo and Uhlmann, anisotropic inverse problems were considered in certain admissible geometries, that is, on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary which are conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean line and a simple manifold. In particular, it was proved that a bounded smooth potential in a Schrödinger equation was uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in dimensions n \geq 3. In this article we extend this result to the case of unbounded potentials, namely those in Ln/2. In the process, we derive Lp Carleman esti…

In this note we show that on any compact subdomain of a Kähler manifold that admits sufficiently many global holomorphic functions, the products of harmonic functions form a complete set. This gives a positive answer to the linearized anisotropic Calderón problem on a class of complex manifolds that includes compact subdomains of Stein manifolds and sufficiently small subdomains of Kähler manifolds. Some of these manifolds do not admit limiting Carleman weights, and thus cannot by treated by standard methods for the Calderón problem in higher dimensions. The argument is based on constructing M…
We solve the partial data Calderón problem on conformally transversallly anisotropic (CTA) manifolds with $L^{n/2}$ potentials - on par with sharp unique continuation result of \cite{JerKen}. A trivial consequence of this is the sharp regularity improvement to the result of Kenig-Sjöstrand-Uhlmann \cite{ksu}. This is done by constructing a "Green's function" which possesses both desirable boundary conditions {\em and} satisfies semiclassical type estimates in the suitable $L^{p}$ spaces. No Carleman estimates were used in the writing of this article which makes it starkly different from the tr…
The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we would like to derive quantitative uniqueness estimates for solutions of the general complex conductivity equation. It is still unknown whether the \emph{strong} unique continuation property holds for such equations. Nonetheless, in this paper, we show that the unique continuation property in the form of three-ball inequalities is satisfied for the complex conductivity equation under only Lipschitz assumption on the leading coefficients. The derivation of such estimates relies on a delicate Carleman estimate. Secondly, we study the problem of estimat…
We investigate an inverse boundary value problem of determination of a nonlinear law for reaction-diffusion processes, which are modeled by general form semilinear parabolic equations. We do not assume that any solutions to these equations are known a priori, in which case the problem has a well known gauge symmetry. We determine, under additional assumptions, the semilinear term up to this symmetry in a time-dependent anisotropic case modeled on Riemannian manifolds, and for partial data measurements on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Moreover, we present cases where it is possible to exploit the nonlinear i…
The Ginzburg-Landau functional is a phase transition model which is suitable for clustering or classification type problems. We study the asymptotics of a sequence of Ginzburg-Landau functionals with anisotropic interaction potentials on point clouds $Ψ_n$ where $n$ denotes the number data points. In particular we show the limiting problem, in the sense of $Γ$-convergence, is related to the total variation norm restricted to functions taking binary values; which can be understood as a surface energy. We generalize the result known for isotropic interaction potentials to the anisotropic case an…
