We consider limiting Carleman weights for Dirac operators and prove corresponding Carleman estimates. In particular, we show that limiting Carleman weights for the Laplacian also serve as limiting weights for Dirac operators. As an application we consider the inverse problem of recovering a Lipschitz continuous magnetic field and electric potential from boundary measurements for the Pauli Dirac operator.
General Hardy-Carleman type inequalities for Dirac operators are proved. New inequalities are derived involving particular traditionally used weight functions. In particular, a version of the Agmon inequality and Treve type inequalities are established. The case of a Dirac particle in a (potential) magnetic field is also considered. The methods used are direct and based on quadratic form techniques.
In this article, we consider a linearized magnetohydrodynamics system for incompressible flow in a three-dimensional bounded domain. We first prove two kinds of Carleman estimates. This is done by combining the Carleman estimates for the parabolic and the elliptic equations. Then we apply the Carleman estimates to prove Holder type stability results for some inverse source problems.
In this paper, we consider Carleman estimates and inverse problems for the coupled quantitative thermoacoustic equations. In Part I, we establish Carleman estimates for the coupled quantitative thermoacoustic equations by assuming that the coefficients satisfy suitable conditions and taking the usual weight function $φ(x,t)={\rm e}^{λψ(x,t)}$, $ψ(x,t)=\left|x-x_{0}\right|^{2}-β\left(t-t_0\right)^{2}+βt_0^{2}$ for $x$ in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with $C^{3}$-boundary and $t\in(0, T)$, where $t_0=T/2$. We will discuss applications of the Carleman estimates to some inverse problems fo…
In this article, We investigate an inverse problem of determining the time-dependent source factor in parabolic integro-differential equations from boundary data. We establish the uniqueness and the conditional stability estimate of Hölder type for the inverse source problem in a cylindrical shaped domain. Our methodology is based on the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method by means of the Carleman estimate. Here we also derive the "time-like" Carleman estimate for parabolic integro-differential equations.
We consider a fractional radiative transport equation, where the time derivative is of half order in the Caputo sense. By establishing Carleman estimates, we prove the global Lipschitz stability in determining the coefficients of the one-dimensional time-fractional radiative transport equation of half-order.
We consider the Kelvin-Voigt model for the viscoelasticity, and prove a Carleman estimate for functions without compact supports. Then we apply the Carleman estimate to prove the Lipschitz stability in determining a spatial varying function in an external source term of Kelvin-Voigt model by a single measurement. Finally as a related system, we consider an isothermal compressible fluid system and apply the Carleman estimate to establish the Lipschitz stability for an inverse source problem for the compressible fluid system.
In this article, we provide a modified argument for proving conditional stability for inverse problems of determining spatially varying functions in evolution equations by Carleman estimates. Our method needs not any cut-off procedures and can simplify the existing proofs. We establish the conditional stability for inverse source problems for a hyperbolic equation and a parabolic equation, and our method is widely applicable to various evolution equations.
For an initial-boundary value problem for a parabolic equation in the spatial variable $x=(x_1,.., x_n)$ and time $t$, we consider an inverse problem of determining a coefficient which is independent of one spatial component $x_n$ by extra lateral boundary data. We apply a Carleman estimate to prove a conditional stability estimate for the inverse problem. Also we prove similar results for the corresponding inverse source problem.
We consider a half-order time-fractional diffusion equation in an arbitrary dimension and investigate inverse problems of determining the source term or the diffusion coefficient from spatial data at an arbitrarily fixed time under some additional assumptions. We establish the stability estimate of Lipschitz type in the inverse problems and the proofs are based on the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method by using Carleman estimates.
We prove that the stationary magnetic potential vector and the electrostatic potential entering the dynamic magnetic Schrödinger equation can be Lipschitz stably retrieved through finitely many local boundary measurements of the solution. The proof is by means of a specific global Carleman estimate for the Schrödinger equation, established in the first part of the paper.
A Carleman function is a special fundamental solution with a large parameter for the Laplace operator and gives a formula to calculate the value of the solution of the Cauchy problem in a domain for the Laplace equation. The probe method applied to an inverse boundary value problem for the Laplace equation in a bounded domain is based on the existence of a special sequence of harmonic functions which is called a {\it needle sequence}. The needle sequence blows up on a special curve which connects a given point inside the domain with a point on the boundary of the domain and is convergent local…
In this article we consider an inverse boundary value problem for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations. We show that the electromagnetic material parameters are determined by boundary measurements where part of the boundary data is measured on a possibly very small set. This is an extension of earlier scalar results of Bukhgeim-Uhlmann and Kenig-Sjöstrand-Uhlmann to the Maxwell system. The main contribution is to show that the Carleman estimate approach to scalar partial data inverse problems introduced in those works can be carried over to the Maxwell system.
We consider the linear system of viscoelasticity with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. First we prove a Carleman estimate with boundary values of solutions of viscoelasticity system. Since a solution $u$ under consideration is not assumed to have compact support, in the decoupling of the Lamé operator by introducing div $u$ and rot $u$, we have no boundary condition for them, so that we have to carry out arguments by a pseudodifferential operator. Second we apply the Carleman estimate to an inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying factor of the external source in …
Variable order space-fractional diffusion equation derived as an important model to describe complex anomalous diffusion phenomenon. In this article, well-posedness theory has been constructed for equations with the "Dirichlet" or the "Neumann" type volume-constrained conditions by using the technique of the nonlocal vector calculus. Then some regularity properties have been obtained under the variable-order Sobolev space framework. By choosing a space-independent weight function and using the technique of the nonlocal vector calculus, a Carleman type estimate has been obtained. At last, the C…
We construct an explicit Green's function for the conjugated Laplacian $e^{-ω\cdot x/h}Δe^{-ω\cdot x/h}$, which let us control our solutions on roughly half of the boundary. We apply the Green's function to solve a partial data inverse problem for the Schrödinger equation with potential $q \in L^{n/2}$. We also use this Green's function to derive $L^p$ Carleman estimates similar to the ones in Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge \cite{krs}, but for functions with support up to part of the boundary.
We consider the transport equation $\ppp_tu(x,t) + (H(x)\cdot \nabla u(x,t)) + p(x)u(x,t) = 0$ in $\OOO \times (0,T)$ where $\OOO \subset \R^n$ is a bounded domain, and discuss two inverse problems which consist of determining a vector-valued function $H(x)$ or a real-valued function $p(x)$ by initial values and data on a subboundary of $\OOO$. Our results are conditional stability of Hölder type in a subdomain $D$ provided that the outward normal component of $H(x)$ is positive on $\ppp D \cap \ppp\OOO$. The proofs are based on a Carleman estimate where the weight function depends on $H$.
In this paper, we consider a coupled system of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic type which describes the Biot consolidation model in poro-elasticity. We establish a local Carleman estimate for Biot consilidation system. Using this estimate, we prove the uniqueness and a Hölder stability in determining on the one hand a physical parameter arising in connection with secondary consolidation effects $λ^*$ and on the other hand the two spatially varying density by a single measurement of solution over $ω\times (0, T)$, where $T>0$ is a sufficiently large time and a suitable subbdomain $ω$ satisfying $\p …
We consider an anisotropic hyperbolic equation with memory term: $$ \partial_t^2 u(x,t) = \sum_{i,j=1}^n \partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_ju) + \int^t_0 \sum_{| α| \le 2} b_α(x,t,η)\partial_x^αu(x,η) dη+ F(x,t) $$ for $x \in Ω$ and $t\in (0,T)$ or $\in (-T,T)$, which is a model equation for viscoelasticity. First we establish a Carleman estimate for this equation with overdetermining boundary data on a suitable lateral subboundary $Γ\times (-T,T)$. Second we apply the Carleman estimate to establish a both-sided estimate of $| u(\cdot,0)|_{H^3(Ω)}$ by $\partial_νu|_{Γ\times (0,T)}$ under the assump…
In this article, we consider a magnetohydrodynamics system for incompressible flow in a three-dimensional bounded domain. Firstly, we give the stability results for our inverse coefficients problem. Secondly, we establish and prove two Carleman estimates for both direct problem and inverse problem. Finally, we complete the proof of stability result in terms of the above Carleman estimates.
We consider a parabolic equation in a bounded domain $\OOO$ over a time interval $(0,T)$ with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We arbitrarily choose a subboundary $Γ\subset \ppp\OOO$. Then, we discuss an inverse problem of determining a zeroth-order spatially varying coefficient by extra data of solution $u$: $u\vert_{Γ\times (0,T)}$ and $u(\cdot,t_0)$ in $\OOO$ with $t_0=0$ or $t=T$. First we establish a conditional Lipschitz stability estimate as well as the uniqueness for the case $t_0=T.$ Second, under additional condition for $Γ$, we prove the uniqueness for the case $t_0=0$. T…

In a series of publications of the second author, including some with coauthors, globally strictly convex Tikhonov-like functionals were constructed for some nonlinear ill-posed problems. The main element of such a functional is the presence of the Carleman Weight Function. Compared with previous publications, the main novelty of this paper is that the existence of the regularized solution (i.e. the minimizer) is proved rather than assumed. The method works for both ill-posed Cauchy problems for some quasilinear PDEs of the second order and for some Coefficient Inverse Problems. However, to si…
We establish a new family of Carleman inequalities for wave operators on cylindrical spacetime domains containing a potential that is critically singular, diverging as an inverse square on all the boundary of the domain. These estimates are sharp in the sense that they capture both the natural boundary conditions and the natural $H^1$-energy. The proof is based around three key ingredients: the choice of a novel Carleman weight with rather singular derivatives on the boundary, a generalization of the classical Morawetz inequality that allows for inverse-square singularities, and the systematic…
For linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we first derive a Carleman estimate with a regular weight function. Then we apply it to establish conditional stability for the lateral Cauchy problem and finally we prove conditional stability estimates for inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying divergence-free factor of a source term.
In this article, we prove Carleman estimates for the generalized time-fractional advection-diffusion equations by considering the fractional derivative as perturbation for the first order time-derivative. As a direct application of the Carleman estimates, we show a conditional stability of a lateral Cauchy problem for the time-fractional advection-diffusion equation, and we also investigate the stability of an inverse source problem.
We consider the first and half order time fractional equation with the zero initial condition. We investigate an inverse source problem of determining the time-independent source factor by the data at an arbitrarily fixed time and we establish the conditional stability estimate of Hölder type in our inverse problem. Our method is based on the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method by means of the Carleman estimate. We also derive the Carleman estimate for the first and half order time fractional diffusion equation.
We consider inverse problems of determining coefficients or time independent factors of source terms in radiative transport equations by means of Carleman estimate. We establish global Lipschitz stability results with an additional condition which requires some strict positivity for initial value or given factor of source, but we need not any extra conditions on domains of velocities, which is the main achievement of this article compared with the existing work by Machida and Yamamoto ({\it Inverse Problems} {\bf 30} 035010, 2014). The proof relies on a Carleman estimate with a piecewise linea…
We consider the fixed angle inverse scattering problem and show that a compactly supported potential is uniquely determined by its scattering amplitude for two opposite fixed angles. We also show that almost symmetric or horizontally controlled potentials are uniquely determined by their fixed angle scattering data. This is done by establishing an equivalence between the frequency domain and the time domain formulations of the problem, and by solving the time domain problem by extending the methods of [RS19] which adapts the ideas introduced in [BK81] and [IY01] on the use of Carleman estimate…
We consider the transport equation $\ppp_t u(x,t) + H(t)\cdot \nabla u(x,t) = 0$ in $\OOO\times(0,T),$ where $T>0$ and $\OOO\subset \R^d $ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary $\ppp\OOO$. First, we prove a Carleman estimate for solutions of finite energy with piecewise continuous weight functions. Then, under a further condition which guarantees that the orbits of $H$ intersect $\ppp\OOO$, we prove an energy estimate which in turn yields an observability inequality. Our results are motivated by applications to inverse problems.
In this paper, we present a new Carleman estimate for the adjoint equations associated to a class of super strong degenerate parabolic linear problems. Our approach considers a standard geometric imposition on the control domain, which can not be removed in the general situations. Additionally, we also apply the aformentioned main inequality in order to investigate the null controllability of two nonlinear parabolic systems. The first application is concerned a global null controllability result obtained for some semilinear equations, relying on a fixed point argument. In the second one, a loc…
We consider inverse problems for the first and half order time fractional equation. We establish the stability estimates of Lipschitz type in inverse source and inverse coefficient problems by means of the Carleman estimates.
We consider the d-dimensional Boussinesq system defined on a sufficiently smooth bounded domain, and subject to a pair $\{ v, \boldsymbol{u} \}$ of controls localized on $\{ \widetildeΓ, ω\}$. Here, $v$ is a scalar Dirichlet boundary control for the thermal equation, acting on an arbitrary small connected portion $\widetildeΓ$ of the boundary $Γ= \partial Ω$. Instead, $\boldsymbol{u}$ is a $d$-dimensional internal control for the fluid equation acting on an arbitrary small collar $ω$ supported by $\widetildeΓ$ (Fig 1). The initial conditions for both fluid and heat equations are taken of low r…
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the boundary of a bounded open set in $R^n$ for the perturbed polyharmonic operator $(-Δ)^m +q$ with $q\in L^{n/2m}$, $n>2m$, determines the potential $q$ in the set uniquely. In the course of the proof, we construct a special Green function for the polyharmonic operator and establish its mapping properties in suitable weighted $L^2$ and $L^p$ spaces. The $L^p$ estimates for the special Green function are derived from $L^p$ Carleman estimates with linear weights for the polyharmonic operator.
In this paper, we establish a global Carleman estimate for an Ultrahyperbolic Schrödinger equation. Moreover, we prove Hölder stability for the inverse problem of determining a coefficient or a source term in the Ultrahyperbolic Schrödinger equation by some lateral boundary data.
