This paper establishes new bridges between number theory and modern harmonic analysis, namely between the class of complex functions, which contains zeta functions of arithmetic schemes and closed with respect to product and quotient, and the class of mean-periodic functions in several spaces of functions on the real line. In particular, the meromorphic continuation and functional equation of the zeta function of arithmetic scheme with its expected analytic shape is shown to correspond to mean-periodicity of a certain explicitly defined function associated to the zeta function. This correspondence can be viewed as an extension of the Hecke--Weil correspondence. The case of elliptic curves over number fields and their regular models is treated in more details, and many other examples are included as well.
We consider the Tate cohomology of the circle group acting on the topological Hochschild homology of schemes. We show that in the case of a scheme smooth and proper over a finite field, this cohomology theory naturally gives rise to the cohomological interpretation of the Hasse-Weil zeta function by regularized determinants envisioned by Deninger. In this case, the periodicity of the zeta function is reflected by the periodicity of said cohomology theory, whereas neither is periodic in general.
We use a form of lifted harmonic analysis to develop a two-dimensional adelic integral representation of the zeta functions of simple arithmetic surfaces. Manipulations of this integral then lead to an adelic interpretation of the so-called mean-periodicity correspondence, which is comparable to the better known automorphicity conjectures for the generic fibre.
In a previous paper [KT] we introduced determinant of the Riemann operator on Quillen's higher $K$-groups of the integer ring of an algebraic number field $K$. We showed that the determinant expresses essentially the inverse of the so called gamma factor of Dedekind zeta function of $K$. Here we study the periodicity of determinant. This comes from the famous "periodicity" of higher $K$ groups. This periodicity is analogous to Euler's periodicity of gamma function $Γ(x+1)=xΓ(x)$. We investigate the "reflection formula" corresponding to Euler's reflection formula $Γ(x)Γ(1-x)=\fracπ{\sin(πx)}$ a…
In this note, for each odd prime $p$, we show that the orders of the $KU$-local homotopy groups of the mod $p$ Moore spectrum are equal to denominators of special values of certain quotients of Dedekind zeta-functions of totally real number fields. With this observation in hand, we give a cute topological proof of the Leopoldt conjecture for those number fields, by showing that it is a consequence of periodicity properties of $KU$-local stable homotopy groups.
If C is a smooth projective curve over a number field k, then, under fair hypotheses, its L-function admits meromorphic continuation and satisfies the anticipated functional equation if and only if a related function is X-mean-periodic for some appropriate functional space X. Building on the work of Masatoshi Suzuki for modular elliptic curves, we will explore the dual relationship of this result to the widely believed conjecture that such L-functions should be automorphic. More precisely, we will directly show the orthogonality of the matrix coefficients of GL_{2g}-automorphic representations…
Two dimensional adelic objects were introduced by I. Fesenko in his study of the Hasse zeta function associated to a regular model $\mathcal E$ of the elliptic curve $E$. The Hasse-Weil $L$-function $L(E,s)$ of $E$ appears in the denominator of the Hasse zeta function of $\mathcal E$. The two dimensional adelic analysis predicts that the integrand $h$ of the boundary term of the two dimensional zeta integral attached to $\mathcal E$ is mean-periodic. The mean-periodicity of $h$ implies the meromorphic continuation and the functional equation of $L(E,s)$. On the other hand, if $E$ is modular, s…
In this article we compute a discrete mean value of the derivative of the Riemann zeta function. This mean value will be important for several applications concerning the size of $ζ'(ρ)$ where $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta function and $ρ$ is a non-trivial zero of the Riemann zeta function.
In the study of order estimation of the Riemann zeta-function $ ζ(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty n^{-s} $, solving Lindelöf hypothesis is an important theme. As one of the relationships, asymptotic behavior of mean values has been studied. Furthermore, the theory of the mean values is also noted in the double zeta-functions, and the mean values of the Euler-Zagier type of double zeta-function and Mordell-Tornheim type of double zeta-function were studied. In this paper, we prove asymptotic formulas for mean square values of the Barnes double zeta-function $ ζ_2 (s, α; v, w ) = \sum_{m=0}^\infty \sum_{…
The GUE Hypothesis, which concerns the distribution of zeros of the Riemann zeta-function, is used to evaluate some integrals involving the logarithmic derivative of the zeta-function. Some connections are shown between the GUE Hypothesis and other conjectures.
Assume the Riemann hypothesis. On the right-hand side of the critical strip, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the discrete mean square of the Riemann zeta-function over imaginary parts of its zeros.
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the second discrete moment of the Riemann zeta function over the arithmetic progression $\frac{1}{2} + in$. It shows that the first main term is equal to that of the continuous mean value.
In this paper we discuss three types of the mean values of the Euler double zeta function. In order to get results we introduce three approximate formulas for this function.
We prove asymptotic formulas for mean square values of the Euler double zeta-function $ζ_2(s_0,s)$, with respect to $\Im s$. Those formulas enable us to propose a double analogue of the Lindel{ö}f hypothesis.
The aim of the present article is to reveal a structure shared by two basic zeta-functions in their fourth power moments through the view point of representation theory of Lie groups, relying specifically upon the Kirillov model. It might induce one to ponder over the possibility to go beyond.
In this small note, we provide an elementary proof of the fact that infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational. For the first time, this celebrated theorem been proven by Rivoal and Ball--Rivoal. The original proof uses highly non-elementary methods like the saddle-point method and Nesterenko's linear independence criterion. Recently, Zudilin has re-proven a slightly weaker form of his important result that at least one of the odd zeta values $ζ(5),ζ(7),ζ(9)$ and $ζ(11)$ is irrational, by elementary means. His new main ingredient are certain 'twists by half' of hypergeometric series. Gener…
Let $d_{α, β}(n)=\sum\limits_{\substack{n=kl αl<k\leqβl}}1$ be the number of ways of factoring n into two almost equal integers. For rational numbers $0<α<β$, we consider the following Zeta function $ζ_{α,β}(s)=\sum\limits_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{d_{α, β}(n)}{n^{s}}$ for $\Re s>1.$ It has an analytic continuation to $\Re s>1/3.$ We get an asymptotic formula for the mean square of $ζ_{α,β}(s)$ in the strip $1/2<\Re s<1$. As an application, we improve an result on the distribution of primitive Pythagorean triangles.
For a fixed integer $k\ge 3$ and fixed $1/2 < σ> 1$ we consider $$ \int_1^T |ζ(σ+ it)|^{2k}dt = \sum_{n=1}^\infty d_k^2(n)n^{-2σ}T + R(k,σ;T), $$ where $R(k,σ;T) = o(T) (T\to\infty)$ is the error term in the above asymptotic formula. Hitherto the sharpest bounds for $R(k,σ;T)$ are given for certain ranges of $σ$. We also obtain new mean value results for the zeta-functions of holomorphic cusp forms and the Rankin-Selberg series.
Assume the Riemann Hypothesis and a hypothesis on small gaps between zeta zeros, we prove a conjecture of Bailey, Bettin, Blower, Conrey, Prokhorov, Rubinstein and Snaith, which states that for any positive integer $K$ and real number $a>0$, \begin{align*} \lim_{a \to 0^+}\lim_{T \to \infty} \frac{(2a)^{2K-1}}{T (\log T)^{2K}} \int_{T}^{2T} \left|\frac{ζ'}ζ\left(\frac{1}{2}+\frac{a}{\log T}+it\right)\right|^{2K} dt = \binom{2K-2}{K-1}. \end{align*} When $K=1$, this was essentially a result of Goldston, Gonek and Montgomery.
We develop a method for mean-value estimation of long Dirichlet polynomials. For an application, we use our method to study properties of the logarithmic derivative of the Riemann zeta function.
We employ mean value estimates of Weyl sums in order to obtain discrete second moments of the Riemann Zeta-function with respect to polynomials near the vertical line $1+i\mathbb{R}$.
In this paper, we provide an alternative method to calculate the values of generalized multiple Hurwitz zeta function at non-positive integers by means of \emph{Raabe}'s formula and the \textit{Bernoulli} numbers.
The aim of the present article is to render the spectral theory of mean values of automorphic $L$-functions -- in a unified fashion. This is an outcome of the investigation commenced with the parts XII and XIV, where a framework was laid on the basis of the theory of automorphic representations and a general approach to the mean values was envisaged. We restrict ourselves to the situation offered by the full modular group, solely for the sake of simplicity. Details and extensions are to be published elsewhere. In this new version we added details to all aspects of our argument especially for t…
Let $Δ(x)$ denote the error term in the Dirichlet divisor problem, and $E(T)$ the error term in the asymptotic formula for the mean square of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$. If $E^*(t) = E(t) - 2πΔ^*(t/2π)$ with $Δ^*(x) = -Δ(x) + 2Δ(2x) - 1/2Δ(4x)$ and we set $\int_0^T E^*(t)\,dt = 3πT/4 + R(T)$, then we obtain $$ \int_T^{T+H}(E^*(t))^2\,dt \gg HT^{1/3}\log^3T $$ and $$ HT\log^3T \ll \int_T^{T+H}R^2(t)\,dt \ll HT\log^3T, $$ for $T^{2/3+ε}\le H \le T$.
Let $Δ(x)$ denote the error term in the Dirichlet divisor problem, and $E(T)$ the error term in the asymptotic formula for the mean square of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$. If $E^*(t) = E(t) - 2πΔ^*(t/2π)$ with $Δ^*(x) = -Δ(x) + 2Δ(2x) - {1\over2}Δ(4x)$, then we obtain the asymptotic formula $$ \int_0^T (E^*(t))^2 {\rm d} t = T^{4/3}P_3(\log T) + O_ε(T^{7/6+ε}), $$ where $P_3$ is a polynomial of degree three in $\log T$ with positive leading coefficient. The exponent 7/6 in the error term is the limit of the method.
Available proofs of result of the type 'at least one of the odd zeta values $ζ(5),ζ(7),\dots,ζ(s)$ is irrational' make use of the saddle-point method or of linear independence criteria, or both. These two remarkable techniques are however counted as highly non-elementary, therefore leaving the partial irrationality result inaccessible to general mathematics audience in all its glory. Here we modify the original construction of linear forms in odd zeta values to produce, for the first time, an elementary proof of such a result - a proof whose technical ingredients are limited to the prime numbe…
This paper continues a series of investigations on converging representations for the Riemann Zeta function. We generalize some identities which involve Riemann's zeta function, and moreover we give new series and integrals for the zeta function. The results originate from attempts to extend the zeta function by classical means on the complex plane. This is particularly of interest for representations which converge rapidly in a given area of the complex plane, or for the purpose to make error bounds available.
As one of the asymptotic formulas for the zeta-function, Hardy and Littlewood gave asymptotic formulas called the approximate functional equation. In 2003, R. Garunkštis, A. Laurinčikas, and J. Steuding (in [1]) proved the Riemann-Siegel type of the approximate functional equation for the Lerch zeta-function $ ζ_L (s, α, λ) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty e^{2πi n λ}(n + α)^{-s} $. In this paper, we prove another type of approximate functional equations for the Hurwitz and Lerch zeta-functions. R. Garunkštis, A. Laurinčikas, and J. Steuding (in \cite{GLS2}) obtained the results on the mean square values o…
The aim of the present note is to develop a study on the feasibility of a unified theory of mean values of automorphic L-functions, a desideratum in the field. This is an outcome of the investigation commenced with Part XII of this series, where a framework was laid on the basis of the theory of automorphic representations, and a general approach to the mean values was envisaged. Specifically, it is shown here that the inner-product method, which was initiated by A. Good and greatly enhanced by M. Jutila, ought to be brought to perfection so that the mean square of the L-function attached to a…
It is proved that, for $T^ε\le G = G(T) \le {1\over2}\sqrt{T}$, $$ \int_T^{2T}\Bigl(I_1(t+G)-I_1(t)\Bigr)^2 dt = TG\sum_{j=0}^3a_j\log^j \Bigl({\sqrt{T}\over G}\Bigr) + O_ε(T^{1+ε}+ T^{1/2+ε}G^2) $$ with some explicitly computable constants $a_j (a_3>0)$ where, for a fixed natural number $k$, $$I_k(t,G) = {1\over\sqrtπ}\int_{-\infty}^\infty |ζ(1/2+it+iu)|^{2k} {\rm e}^{-(u/G)^2} du. $$ The generalizations to the mean square of $I_1(t+U,G) - I_1(t,G)$ over $[T, T+H]$ and the estimation of the mean square of $I_2(t+U,G)-I_2(t,G)$ are also discussed.
These expository lectures focus on the distribution of zeros of the Riemann zeta function. The topics include the prime number theorem, the Riemann hypothesis, mean value theorems, and random matrix models.
Let $Δ(x)$ denote the error term in the Dirichlet divisor problem, and let $E(T)$ denote the error term in the asymptotic formula for the mean square of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$. If $E^*(t) := E(t) - 2πΔ^*(t/(2π))$ with $Δ^*(x) := -Δ(x) + 2Δ(2x) - \frac{1}{2}Δ(4x)$ and $\int_0^T E^*(t)\,dt = \frac{3}{4}πT + R(T)$, then we obtain a number of results involving the moments of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ in short intervals, by connecting them to the moments of $E^*(T)$ and $R(T)$ in short intervals. Upper bounds and asymptotic formulas for integrals of the form $$ \int_T^{2T}\left(\int_{t-H}^{t+H}|ζ(1/2+iu)|^2\,du\right)^…
The number of zeros and the distribution of the real part of non-real zeros of the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function have been investigated by Berndt, Levinson, Montgomery, and Akatsuka. Berndt, Levinson, and Montgomery investigated the general case, meanwhile Akatsuka gave sharper estimates for the first derivative of the Riemann zeta function under the truth of the Riemann hypothesis. In this paper, we extend the results of Akatsuka to the second derivative of the Riemann zeta function.
We establish a new decoupling inequality for curves in the spirit of [B-D1], [B-D2] which implies a new mean value theorem for certain exponential sums crucial to the Bombieri-Iwaniec method as developed further in [H]. In particular, this leads to an improved bound $|ζ(\frac 12+it)|\ll t^{53/342+\varepsilon}$ for the zeta function on the critical line
We investigate the intersections of the curve $\mathbb{R}\ni t\mapsto ζ({1\over 2}+it)$ with the real axis. We show that if the Riemann hypothesis is true, the mean-value of those real values exists and is equal to 1. Moreover, we show unconditionally that the zeta-function takes arbitrarily large real values on the critical line.
Let $d(n)$ be the number of divisors of $n$, let $γ$ denote Euler's constant and $$ Δ(x) := \sum_{n\le x}d(n) - x(\log x + 2γ-1) $$ denote the error term in the classical Dirichlet divisor problem, and let $ζ(s)$ denote the Riemann zeta-function. It is shown that $$ \int_0^TΔ(t)|ζ(1/2+it)|^2\,dt \ll T(\log T)^{4}. $$ Further, if $2\le k\le 8$ is a fixed integer, then we prove the asymptotic formula $$ \int_1^{T}Δ^{k}(t)|ζ(1/2+it)|^2\,dt=c_1(k)T^{1+\frac k4}\log T+ c_2(k)T^{1+\frac k4}+O_\varepsilon(T^{1+\frac k4-η_k+\varepsilon}), $$ where $c_1(k)$ and $c_2(k)$ are explicit constants, and wher…
The renormalization of MZV was until now carried out by algebraic means. We show that renormalization in general, of the multiple zeta functions in particular, is more than mere convention. We show that simple calculus methods allow us to compute the renormalized values of multiple zeta functions in any dimension for arguments of the form (1,...,1), where the series do not converge. These values happen to be the coefficients of the asymptotic expansion of the inverse Gamma function. We focus on the geometric interpretation of these values, and on the combinatorics their closed form encodes, wh…
We show that the Riesz mean of the singular series in the Goldbach and the Hardy-Littlewood prime-pair conjectures has an asymptotic formula with an error term that can be expressed as an explicit formula that depends on the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. Unconditionally this error term can be shown to oscillate, while conditionally it can be shown to oscillate between sharp bounds.
A simple proof of the classical subconvexity bound $ζ(1/2+it) \ll_εt^{1/6+ε}$ for the Riemann zeta-function is given, and estimation by more refined techniques is discussed. The connections between the Dirichlet divisor problem and the mean square of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ are analysed.
The modified Mellin transform ${\cal Z}_k(s) = \int_1^\infty |ζ(1/2+ix)|^{2k}x^{-s}{\rm d} x (k = 1,2,...)$ is investigated. Analytic continuation and mean square estimates of ${\cal Z}_k(s) $ are discussed, as well as connections with power moments of $|ζ(1/2+ix)|$, with the special emphasis on the cases $k = 1,2$.
In this paper, we generalize the results of Akatsuka to the $k$-th derivative (for positive integer $k$) of the Riemann zeta function.
We define zeta functions for the adjoint action of GL(n) on its Lie algebra and study their analytic properties. For n<4 we are able to fully analyse these functions, and recover the Shintani zeta function for the prehomogeneous vector space of binary quadratic forms for n=2. Our construction naturally yields a regularisation, which is necessary for the improvement of the properties of these zeta function, in particular for the analytic continuation if n>2. We further obtain upper and lower bounds on the mean value X^{-5/2}\sum_{E} \res_{s=1}ζ_E(s) as X->\infty, where E runs over totally real …
Improving earlier work of Balasubramanian, Conrey and Heath-Brown, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times an arbitrary Dirichlet polynomial of length $T^{1/2 + δ}$, with $δ= 0.01515....$ As an application we obtain an upper bound of the correct order of magnitude for the third moment of the Riemann zeta-function. We also refine previous work of Deshouillers and Iwaniec, obtaining asymptotic estimates in place of bounds. Using the work of Watt, we compute the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times a Dirichlet polynomial of length going up …
