For the Lindelöf Hypothesis concerning the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$, upper bounds as $\Im(s)\to\infty$ have been extensively studied for many years. In particular, the Lindelöf Hypothesis is one of the most important open problems in analytic number theory. It is also known to be equivalent to certain mean value estimates, which provide a fundamental connection between pointwise upper bounds and integral mean values of zeta-functions.
In this paper, we consider an analogue of the Lindelöf Hypothesis for the Barnes multiple zeta function $ζ_r (s,a,(w_1,\dots,w_r)) = \sum_{m_1=0}^\infty \cdots \sum_{m_r=0}^\infty (a+m_1 w_1+\cdots+m_r w_r)^{-s} $, and establish equivalent conditions in terms of integral mean values. In particular, the situation depends essentially on the $\Q$-rank of $\langle w_1,\dots,w_r\rangle$, and it is especially interesting that phenomena peculiar to the Barnes multiple zeta function appear according to this rank.
The Barnes multiple zeta function is useful to study in the number theory and Knot thoey and Mathematical Physics. In this paper we consider q-extension of Barnes type multiple zeta function and we also construct the q-extension of Euler polynomials of higher order
Recently (see [1]) I has introduced an interesting the Euler-Barnes multiple zeta function. In this paper we construct the q-analogue of Euler-Barnes multiple zeta function which interpolates the q-analogue of Frobenius-Euler numbers of higher order at negative integers.
In this paper, we introduce $q$-analogues of the Barnes multiple zeta functions. We show that these functions can be extended meromorphically to the whole plane, and moreover, tend to the Barnes multiple zeta functions when $q\uparrow 1$ for all complex numbers.
In the former part of this paper, we give functional equations for Barnes multiple zeta-functions and consider some relevant results. In particular, we show that Ramanujan's classical formula for the Riemann zeta values can be derived from functional equations for Barnes zeta-functions. In the latter half part, we generalize some evaluation formulas of certain series involving hyperbolic functions in terms of Bernoulli polynomials. The original formulas were classically given by Cauchy, Mellin, Ramanujan, and later recovered and formulated by Berndt. From our consideration, we give multiple ve…
The \emph{Barnes $ζ$-function} is \[ ζ_n (z, x; \a) := \sum_{\m \in \Z_{\ge 0}^n} \frac{1}{\left(x + m_1 a_1 + \dots + m_n a_n \right)^z} \] defined for $\Re(x) > 0$ and $\Re(z) > n$ and continued meromorphically to $\C$. Specialized at negative integers $-k$, the Barnes $ζ$-function gives \[ ζ_n (-k, x; \a) = \frac{(-1)^n k!}{(k+n)!} \, B_{k+n} (x; \a) \] where $B_k(x; \a)$ is a \emph{Bernoulli--Barnes polynomial}, which can be also defined through a generating function that has a slightly more general form than that for Bernoulli polynomials. Specializing $B_k(0; \a)$ gives the \emph{Bernoul…
In the study of order estimation of the Riemann zeta-function $ ζ(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty n^{-s} $, solving Lindelöf hypothesis is an important theme. As one of the relationships, asymptotic behavior of mean values has been studied. Furthermore, the theory of the mean values is also noted in the double zeta-functions, and the mean values of the Euler-Zagier type of double zeta-function and Mordell-Tornheim type of double zeta-function were studied. In this paper, we prove asymptotic formulas for mean square values of the Barnes double zeta-function $ ζ_2 (s, α; v, w ) = \sum_{m=0}^\infty \sum_{…
As one of the asymptotic formulas of the zeta-function, Hardy and Littlewood gave asymptotic formulas called the approximate functional equation. In this paper, we prove an approximate functional equation of the Barnes double zeta-function $ ζ_2 (s, α; v, w ) = \sum_{m=0}^\infty \sum_{n=0}^\infty (α+vm+wn)^{-s} $. Also, applying this approximate functional equation and the van der Corput method, we obtain upper bounds for $ ζ_2(1/2 + it, α; v, w) $ and $ ζ_2(3/2 + it, α; v, w) $ with respect to $ t $ as $ t \rightarrow \infty $.
Let $a, w_1, w_2,\cdot\cdot\cdot, w_r >0$ and $s \in \mathbb{C}$. We put $w= (w_1,\cdot\cdot\cdot,w_r)$. Then the Barnes $r$-ple zeta function is defined by $ζ_r(s, w, a) = \sum_{m_1=0}^{\infty} \cdot\cdot\cdot \sum_{m_r=0}^{\infty} 1/(a+m_1w_1+\cdot\cdot\cdot +m_rw_r)^s$ when $σ:= \Re(s)>r$. In this paper, we show that the Barnes double zeta function $ζ_2(σ, w, a)$ has real zeros in the interval $(1,2)$ if and only if $0< a < (w_1+w_2)/2$ and the number of such zero is precisely one if $0< a< (w_1+w_2)/2$.
Let $x$ be a complex number which has a positive real part, and $w_1,\ldots,w_N$ be positive rational numbers. We show that $w^s ζ_N (s, x \ |\ w_1,\ldots, w_N)$ can be expressed as a finite linear combination of the Hurwitz zeta functions over $\mathbb Q(x)$, where $ζ_N (s,x \ |\ w_1,\ldots, w_N)$ is the Barnes zeta function and $w$ is a positive rational number explicitly determined by $w_1,\ldots, w_N$. Furthermore, we give generalizations of Kummer's formula on the gamma function and Koyama-Kurokawa's formulae on the multiple gamma functions, and an explicit formula for the values at non-p…
Suppose that $ω_1,\ldots,ω_N$ are positive real numbers and $x$ is a complex number with positive real part. The multiple Barnes-Euler zeta function $ζ_{E,N}(s,x;\barω)$ with parameter vector $\barω=(ω_1,\ldots,ω_N)$ is defined as a deformation of the Barnes multiple zeta function as follows $$ ζ_{E,N}(s,x;\barω)=\sum_{t_1=0}^\infty\cdots\sum_{t_N=0}^\infty \frac{(-1)^{t_1+\cdots+t_N}}{(x+ω_1t_1+\cdots+ω_Nt_N)^s}. $$ In this paper, based on the fermionic $p$-adic integral, we define the $p$-adic analogue of multiple Barnes-Euler zeta function $ζ_{E,N}(s,x;\barω)$ which we denote by $ζ_{p,E,N}(…
By using $q$-Volkenborn integration and uniform differentiable on $\mathbb{Z}%_{p}$, we construct $p$-adic $q$-zeta functions. These functions interpolate the $q$-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. The value of $p$-adic $q$-zeta functions at negative integers are given explicitly. We also define new generating functions of $q$-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. By using these functions, we prove analytic continuation of some basic (or $q$-) $L$% -series. These generating functions also interpolate Barnes' type Changhee $% q $-Bernoulli numbers with attached to Dirichlet character as well. By a…
We introduce a new type of multiple zeta functions, which we call bilateral zeta functions, analogous to the Barnes zeta functions. The bilateral zeta function is a periodic function and shares certain basic properties of Barnes zeta function. Especially, we prove that the bilateral zeta function has a nice Fourier series expansion and the Barnes zeta function can be expressed as a finite sum of bilateral zeta functions. By these properties of the bilateral zeta functions, We obtain simple proofs of some formulas, for example the reflection formula for the multiple gamma function, the inversio…
Using the Jackson integral, we obtain the $q$-integral analogue of the Raabe type formulas for Barnes multiple Hurwitz-Lerch zeta functions and Barnes and Vardi's multiple gamma functions. Our results generalize $q$-integral analogue of the Raabe type formulas for the Hurwitz zeta functions and log gamma functions in [N. Kurokawa, K. Mimachi, and M. Wakayama, Jackson's integral of the Hurwitz zeta function, Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo (2) 56 (2007), no. 1, 43--56]. During the proof we also obtain a new formula on the relationship between the higher and lower orders Hurwitz zeta functions.
We prove asymptotic formulas for mean square values of the Euler double zeta-function $ζ_2(s_0,s)$, with respect to $\Im s$. Those formulas enable us to propose a double analogue of the Lindel{ö}f hypothesis.
In this paper, we show that any polynomial of zeta or $L$-functions with some conditions has infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. This general result has abundant applications. By using the main result, we prove that the zeta-functions associated to symmetric matrices treated by Ibukiyama and Saito, certain spectral zeta-functions and the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-functions have infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. Moreover, we show that the Lindelöf hypothesis for the Riemann zeta-function is equivalent to the Lindelöf hypothesis for zeta-functions mentioned a…
We give explicit expressions (or at least an algorithm of obtaining such expressions) of the coefficients of the Laurent series expansions of the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-functions at any integer points. The main tools are the Mellin-Barnes integral formula and the harmonic product formulas. The Mellin-Barnes integral formula is used in the induction process on the number of variables, and the harmonic product formula is used to show that the Laurent series expansion outside the domain of convergence can be obtained from that inside the domain of convergence.
We present an elementary, short and simple proof of the validity of the Lindelöf hypothesis about the Riemann zeta-function. The obtained estimate and classical results by Bohr-Landau and Littlewood disprove Riemann's hypothesis.
The classical Lerch's formula states the following normalized product: $$\prod_{n=0}^\infty(x+n)=\frac{\sqrt{2π}}{Γ(x)},\quad \textrm{Re}(x)>0, $$ where $Γ(x)$ is the Euler gamma function. In this note, by using Barnes' multiple zeta function and its alternating form, we obtain two kinds of generalizations of Lerch's formula, which imply the product $$ \prod_{n=1}^\infty n=\sqrt{2π} $$ (in the sense of zeta regularization) and the product $$\frac{2\cdot2}{1\cdot 3}\frac{4\cdot4}{3\cdot 5}\frac{6\cdot6}{5\cdot 7}\cdots=\fracπ{2}$$ (Wallis' formula in 1656), respectively.
We show that at least 19/27 of the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function are simple, assuming the Riemann Hypothesis (RH). This was previously established by Conrey, Ghosh and Gonek [Proc. London Math. Soc. 76 (1998), 497--522] under the additional assumption of the Generalised Lindelöf Hypothesis (GLH). We are able to remove this hypothesis by careful use of the generalised Vaughan identity.
We provide new representations for the finite parts at the poles and the derivative at zero of the Barnes zeta function in any dimension in the general case. These representations are in the forms of series and limits. We also give an integral representation for the finite parts at the poles. Similar results are derived for an associated function, which we term homogeneous Barnes zeta function. Our expressions immediately yield analogous representations for the logarithm of the Barnes Gamma function, including the particular case also known as multiple Gamma function.
We study the behavior of partially twisted multiple zeta-functions. We give new closed and explicit formulas for special values at non-positive integer points of such zeta-functions. Our method is based on a result of M. de Crisenoy on the fully twisted case and the Mellin-Barnes integral formula.
We introduce an "$L$-function" $\mathcal{L}$ built up from the integral representation of the Barnes' multiple zeta function $ζ$. Unlike the latter, $\mathcal{L}$ is defined on a domain equipped with a non-trivial action of a group $G$. Although these two functions differ from each other, we can use $\mathcal{L}$ to study $ζ$. In fact, the transformation formula for $\mathcal{L}$ under $G$-transformations provides us with a new perspective on the special values of both $ζ$ and its $s$-derivative. In particular, we obtain Kronecker limit formulas for $ζ$ when restricted to points fixed by eleme…

For the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line the terminal estimate have been proved, which had been conjectured by Lindelöf at the beginning of this Centure. The proof is based on the authors relations which connect the bilinear forms of the eigenvalues of the Hecke operators with sums of the Kloosterman sums. By the way, it is proved that for the Hecke series (which are associated with the eigenfunctions of the automorphic Laplacian) the natural analogue of the Lindelöf conjecture is true also. \noindent Bibl. 14.
We study the distribution of values of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ on vertical lines $\Re s + i \mathbb{R}$, by using the theory of Hilbert space. We show among other things, that, $ζ(s)$ has a Fourier expansion in the half-plane $\Re s \geq 1/2$ and its Fourier coefficients are the binomial transform involving the Stieltjes constants. As an application, we show explicit computation of the Poisson integral associated with the logarithm of $ζ(s) - s/(s-1)$. Moreover, we discuss our results with respect to the Riemann and Lindelöf hypotheses on the growth of the Fourier coefficients.
We consider partial zeta functions $ζ(s,c)$ associated with ray classes $c$'s of a totally real field. Stark's conjecture implies that an appropriate product of $\exp(ζ'(0,c))$'s is an algebraic number which is called a Stark unit. Shintani gave an explicit formula for $\exp(ζ'(0,c))$ in terms of Barnes' multiple gamma function. Yoshida ``decomposed'' Shintani's formula: he defined the symbol $X(c,ι)$ satisfying that $\exp(ζ'(0,c))=\prod_ι \exp(X(c,ι))$ where $ι$ runs over all real embeddings of $F$. Hence we can decompose a Stark unit into a product of $[F:\mathbb Q]$ terms. The main result i…
We study the behavior of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line when the imaginary part of the argument is sampled by the Cauchy random walk. We develop a complete second order theory for the corresponding system of random variables and show that it behaves almost like a system of non-correlated variables. Exploiting this fact in relation with known criteria for almost sure convergence allows to investigate its almost sure asymptotic behavior.
As a generalization of the results [KW3],we study the functional equation of the higher Selberg zeta function for congruence subgroups. To obtain the gamma factor of this function, we introduce a higher Dirichlet $L$-function. Then we determine the gamma factor explicitly in terms of the Barnes triple gamma function and the higher Dirichlet $L$-function.
Several relations are obtained among the Riemann zeta and Hurwitz zeta functions, as well as their products. A particular case of these relations give rise to a simple re-derivation if the important results of [11]. Also, a relation derived here provides the starting point of a novel approach which in a series of companion papers yields a formal proof of the Lindelöf hypothesis. Some of the above relations motivate the need for analysing the large $α$ behaviour of the modified Hurwitz zeta function $ζ_1(s,α)$, $s\in \mathbf{C}$, $α\in \mathbf{R}$, which is also presented here.
We set up a connection between the theory of spherical designs and the question of minima of Epstein's zeta function. More precisely, we prove that a Euclidean lattice, all layers of which hold a 4-design, achieves a local minimum of the Epstein's zeta function, at least at any real s>n/2. We deduce from this a new proof of Sarnak and Strömbergsson's theorem asserting that the root lattices D4 and E8, as well as the Leech lattice, achieve a strict local minimum of the Epstein's zeta function at any s>0. Furthermore, our criterion enables us to extend their theorem to all the so-called extremal…
We calculate a certain mean-value of meromorphic functions by using specific ergodic transformations, which we call affine Boolean transformations. We use Birkhoff's ergodic theorem to transform the mean-value into a computable integral which allows us to completely determine the mean-value of this ergodic type. As examples, we introduce some applications to zeta functions and $L$-functions. We also prove an equivalence of the Lindelöf hypothesis of the Riemann zeta function in terms of its certain ergodic value distribution associated with affine Boolean transformations.
Let $F$ be a totally real field. For each ideal class $c$ of $F$ and each real embedding $ι$ of $F$, Hiroyuki Yoshida defined an invariant $X(c,ι)$ as a finite sum of log of Barnes' multiple gamma functions with some correction terms. Then the derivative value of the partial zeta function $ζ(s,c)$ has a canonical decomposition $ζ'(0,c)=\sum_ιX(c,ι)$, where $ι$ runs over all real embeddings of $F$. Yoshida studied the relation between $\exp(X(c,ι))$'s, Stark units, and Shimura's period symbol. Yoshida and the author also defined and studied the $p$-adic analogue $X_p(c,ι)$: In particular, we di…
In this paper, we evaluate archimedean zeta integrals for automorphic $L$-functions on $GL_n \times GL_{n-1+\ell}$ and on $ SO_{2n+1} \times GL_{n+\ell}$, for $\ell=-1$, $0$, and $1$. In each of these cases, the zeta integrals in question may be expressed as Mellin transforms of products of class one Whittaker functions. Here, we obtain explicit expressions for these Mellin transforms in terms of Gamma functions and Barnes integrals.
If $$ Δ(x) \;:=\; \sum_{n\leqslant x}c_n - Cx\qquad(C>0) $$ denotes the error term in the classical Rankin-Selberg problem, then we obtain a non-trivial upper bound for the mean square of $Δ(x+U) - Δ(x)$ for a certain range of $U = U(X)$. In particular, under the Lindelöf hypothesis for $ζ(s)$, it is shown that $$ \int_X^{2X} \Bigl(Δ(x+U)-Δ(x)\Bigr)^2\,{\roman d} x \;\ll_ε\; X^{9/7+ε}U^{8/7}, $$ while under the Lindelöf hypothesis for the Rankin-Selberg zeta-function the integral is bounded by $X^{1+ε}U^{4/3}$. An analogous result for the discrete second moment of $Δ(x+U)-Δ(x)$ also holds.
Improving earlier work of Balasubramanian, Conrey and Heath-Brown, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times an arbitrary Dirichlet polynomial of length $T^{1/2 + δ}$, with $δ= 0.01515....$ As an application we obtain an upper bound of the correct order of magnitude for the third moment of the Riemann zeta-function. We also refine previous work of Deshouillers and Iwaniec, obtaining asymptotic estimates in place of bounds. Using the work of Watt, we compute the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times a Dirichlet polynomial of length going up …
We study the value-distribution of the Riemann zeta-function and related functions on and near the critical line. Amongst others, we focus on the following: The critical line is a natural boundary of the Voronin-type universality property of the Riemann zeta-function. We study a modified concept of `universality' at the critical line: roughly speaking, we add a scaling factor to the vertical shifts that appear in Voronin's universality theorem. Levinson showed that almost all a-points of the Riemann zeta-function lie in a certain funnel-shaped region around the critical line. We rely on argume…
