In this paper we study the first law of thermodynamics for the (2+1) dimensional rotating charged BTZ black hole considering a pair of thermodinamical systems constructed with the two horizons of this solution. We show that these two systems are similar to the right and left movers of string theory and that the temperature associated with the black hole is the harmonic mean of the temperatures associated with these two systems.

Motivated by low energy effective action of string theory and large applications of BTZ black holes, we will consider minimal coupling between dilaton and nonlinear electromagnetic fields in three dimensions. The main goal is studying thermodynamical structure of black holes in this set up. Temperature and heat capacity of these black holes are investigated and a picture regarding their phase transitions is given. In addition, the role and importance of studying the mass of black holes is highlighted. We will see how different parameters modify thermodynamical quantities, hence thermodynamical…
In this work, we consider rotating BTZ black hole in three dimensions which is dual of one dimensional holographic superconductors. We applied higher order corrections of the entropy, which interpreted as quantum corrections, to the thermodynamics quantities and study modified thermodynamics. We investigate stability of rotating BTZ black hole under effects of higher order quantum corrections, and find that they affect stability of black hole. So, the small black hole has some instabilities and critical points due to the quantum effects. We also study effect of correction terms on the dual pic…
In this paper, we study different cases of the charged rotating BTZ black hole with reference to their horizons. For the existence of these cases conditions on mass, charge and angular momentum of the black hole are obtained. It is also shown that the Einstein field equations for the charged rotating BTZ black hole at the horizon can be expressed as first law of thermodynamics, $dE=TdS+ΩdJ+Φdq+P_{r}dA$.
According to Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule, an equally spaced horizon area spectrum of a static, spherically symmetric black hole was obtained under an adiabatic invariant action. This method can be extended to the rotating black holes. As an example, we apply this method to the rotating BTZ black hole and obtain the quantized spectrum of the horizon area. It is shown that the area spectrum of the rotating BTZ black hole is equally spaced and irrelevant to the rotating parameter, which is consistent with the Bekenstein conjecture. Specifically, the derivation do not need the quasinormal fr…
We demonstrate an optical realization for the rotating BTZ black hole using the recent popular photon fluid model in an optical vortex but with a new proposed expression for the optical phase. We also give the numerical realization for the optical vortex to ensure that it can be generated experimentally. Different from the earlier suggestions for the analogue rotating black holes, our proposal includes an inner horizon in the analogue black hole structure. Such structure can keep for a long distance for the convenience of observing analogue Hawking or Penrose radiations.
In this paper we will show that using the cosmological constant as a new thermodynamical state variable, the differential and integral mass formulas of the first law of thermodynamics for asymptotic flat spacetimes can be extended to be used at the two horizons of the (2+1) dimensional BTZ black hole. We also extend this equations to the stringy description of the BTZ black hole, in which two new systems that resemble the right and left modes of effective string theory, are defined in terms of the inner and outer horizons.
We present a detailed study of gravitational lensing around a rotating BTZ black hole in (2+1) dimensional gravity. The study of orbits for massless test particle around this BH spacetime is performed to describe the nature of cosmological constant in lower dimensions. We study the effect of cosmological constant on the photon orbit in view of other critical parameters. The bending angle of light is studied in view of different values of cosmological constant for direct and retrograde motion of test particles. It is being observed that the bending angle slightly decreases as the value of cosmo…
In this paper we will show that using the cosmological constant as a new thermodynamical state variable, the differential and integral mass formulas of the first law of thermodynamics for asymptotic flat spacetimes can be extended to (2+1) dimensional charged BTZ black holes and charged de Sitter space.
Recently it has been shown that a 2+1 dimensional black hole can be created by a collapse of two colliding massless particles in otherwise empty anti-de Sitter space. Here we generalize this construction to the case of a non-zero impact parameter. The resulting spacetime, which may be regarded as a Gott universe in anti-de Sitter background, contains closed timelike curves. By treating these as singular we are able to interpret our solution as a rotating black hole, hence providing a link between the Gott universe and the BTZ black hole. When analyzing the spacetime we see how the full causal …
We show that there is no superradiance for the Dirac field in the rotating BTZ black hole if the field vanishes at infinity. Then we outline the calculation of the expression for the renormalized energy-momentum tensor, the effective action as well as the heat kernel for the Dirac field for the BTZ black hole. Finally we point out how to construct the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state for the real scalar field in the non-rotating BTZ black hole in two and three dimensions.
Recent work has shown that the entropy of the non-rotating BTZ black hole can be derived from a dual conformal description at any spatial location. In this followup it is shown that a dual conformal description exists at any spatial location for the rotating BTZ black hole as well. As in the non-rotating case, two copies of the central charge $c^{\pm} = 3\ell/2G$ are recovered and the microcanonical Cardy formula yields the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
In this paper we investigate the Sagnac effect by calculating the difference in travel time and phase shift observed for photon beams counter--propagating in a rotating interferometer on a BTZ black hole solution in the context of scale-dependent gravity, which describes the field around a massive static and rotating object in $2+1$ gravity.
In both flat and curved spacetimes, there are weak and strong versions of the anti-Unruh/anti-Hawking effects, in which the KMS field temperature is anti-correlated with the response of a detector and its inferred temperature. We investigate for the first time the effects on the weak and strong anti-Hawking effects for an Unruh-DeWitt detector orbiting a BTZ black hole in the co-rotating frame. We find that rotation can significantly amplify the strength of the weak anti-Hawking effect, whereas it can either amplify or reduce the strength of the strong anti-Hawking effect depending on boundary…
We study the motion of particles in the background of a three-dimensional rotating Hořava AdS black hole that corresponds to a Lorentz-violating version of the BTZ black hole and we analyze the effect of the breaking of Lorentz invariance in such motion by solving analytically the geodesic equations. Mainly, we find that Lorentz-violating version of the BTZ black hole posses a more rich geodesic structure, where the planetary and circular orbits are allowed, which does not occurs in the BTZ background.
We present the thermodynamics of a charged and rotating BTZ black holes here. In particular, we derive expressions for various macroscopic thermal quantities such as entropy, Hawking temperature, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, and specific heat. To study the effects of small statistical thermal fluctuations around the equilibrium on thermodynamics, we calculated the leading-order corrections to the various thermodynamical potentials of charged and rotating BTZ black hole and do comparative analysis for the fixed values of charge and angular momentum.
We consider Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory in $(2+1)$-dimensions where the coupling between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant is the dilatonic coupling $f(ϕ) = \exp (-2αϕ)$ and obtain novel exact rotating black hole solutions. The dilatonic parameter $α$ impacts the metric function, affecting the rotating properties of the black hole, its mass and also its thermodynamics. Calculating the entropy we find that it is always positive and the dilatonic black holes may have higher entropy than the BTZ black hole. Depending on the parameters, the dilatonic BTZ-like black hole may be thermod…
In this paper a Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) black hole is constructed from an exact solution of the Einstein field equations in a (2+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime in the context of noncommutative geometry. The BTZ black hole turns out to have two horizons, no horizon or a single horizon corresponding to a minimal mass. Certain thermodynamical properties are investigated, including Hawking temperature, entropy and heat capacity. Also discussed is the geodesic structure of BTZ black holes for both massless and massive particles. In particular, it is shown that bound orbits fo…

We obtain rotating black hole solutions to the novel 3D Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity recently proposed. These solutions generalize the BTZ metric and are not of constant curvature. They possess an ergoregion and outer horizon, but do not have an inner horizon. We present their basic properties and show that they break the universality of thermodynamics present for their static charged counterparts, whose properties we also discuss. Extending our considerations to higher dimensions, we also obtain novel 4D Gauss-Bonnet rotating black strings.
In the present paper, the quantum corrections to the temperature, entropy and specific heat capacity of the charged non-rotating BTZ black hole are studied by generalized uncertainty principle in tunneling formalism. It is shown that quantum corrected entropy would be of the form of predicted entropy in quantum gravity theories like string theory and loop quantum gravity.
We examine the conjecture that black holes violating the reverse isoperimetric inequality have negative specific heat at constant volume $C_V$. We test this conjecture on the family of generalized exotic Bañados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli (BTZ) black holes and find that $C_V$ can be positive even when the reverse isoperimetric inequality is violated, providing a counter example to the conjecture. However in all cases where $C_V$ is positive, the specific heat at constant pressure $C_P$ is negative, indicating that generalized exotic black holes are thermodynamically unstable, suggesting that a br…
In this paper, we discuss the effect of small statistical thermal fluctuations around the equilibrium on the thermodynamics of small non-rotating BTZ black hole. This is done by evaluating the leading-order corrections to the thermodynamical equation of states, namely, entropy, free energy, internal energy, pressure, enthalpy, Gibbs free energy and specific heat quantitatively. In order to analyze the effect of perturbations on the thermodynamics, we plot various graphs and compare corrected and non-corrected thermodynamic quantities with respect to event horizon radius of non-rotating BTZ bla…
In this paper we analyze some interesting features of the thermodynamics of the rotating BTZ black hole from the Carathéodory axiomatic postulate, for which, we exploit the appropriate Pfaffian form. The allowed adiabatic transformations are then obtained by solving the corresponding Cauchy problem, and are studied accordingly. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of our approach, regarding the the second and third laws of black hole thermodynamics. In particular, the merging of two extremal black holes is studied in detail.
In this manuscript, we investigate the thermal properties of the rotating charged BTZ black hole under the gravity's rainbow (GR) and generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) formalism. At first, we study the GR-corrected thermal quantities according to the usual Heisenberg algebra. Then, we consider a deformed algebra that leads to a change in the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and compare the Hawking temperature, entropy, thermodynamical volume, pressure, and heat capacity functions with the previous results. Thus, we understand and interpret the quantum effects on the BTZ black hole.
In this study, the quantum gravity effect on the tunnelling radiation of charged massive spin-0 scalar particle from 2+1 dimensional charged rotating Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole is looked into by using the Hamilton-Jacobi approach. For this, we calculate the modified Hawking temperature of the black hole by using the modified Klein-Gordon equation based on the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP), and we noticed that the modified Hawking temperature of the black hole depends not only on the black hole properties, but also on the angular momentum, energy, charge and mass of t…
In three dimensions, a phase transition occurs between the non-rotating BTZ black hole and the massless BTZ black hole. Further, introducing the mass of a conical singularity, we show that a transition between the non-rotating BTZ black hole and thermal AdS space is also possible.
We find the Gregory-Laflamme $s$-mode instability of the non-rotating BTZ black hole in new massive gravity. This instability shows that the BTZ black hole could not exist as a stable static solution to the new massive gravity. For non-rotating BTZ black string in four dimensions, however, it is demonstrated that the BTZ black string can be stable against the metric perturbation.
We study the thermodynamics and the thermodynamic geometries of charged rotating BTZ (CR-BTZ) black holes in (2+1)-gravity. We investigate the thermodynamics of these systems within the context of the Weinhold and Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometries and the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD). Considering the behavior of the heat capacity and the Hawking temperature, we show that Weinhold and Ruppeiner geometries cannot describe completely the thermodynamics of these black holes and of their limiting case of vanishing electric charge. In contrast, the Legendre invarianc…
We revisit the non-rotating massive BTZ black hole within a pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space context. Using classical symmetric space techniques we find that every such space intrinsically carries a regular Poisson structure whose symplectic leaves are para-hermitian symmetric surfaces. We also obtain a global expression of the metric yielding a dynamical description of the black hole from its initial to its final singularity.
We consider charged rotating BTZ black holes in noncommutative space by use of Chern-Simons theory formulation of $2+1$ dimensional gravity. The noncommutativity between the radial and the angular variables is introduced through the Seiberg-Witten map for gauge fields, and the deformed geometry to the first order in the noncommutative parameter is derived. It is found that the deformation also induces nontrivial torsion, and the Einstein-Cartan theory appears to be a suitable framework to investigate the equations of motion. Though the deformation is indeed nontrivial, the deformed and the ori…
For the non-rotating BTZ black hole, the distributional curvature tensor field is found. It is shown to have singular parts proportional to a $δ$-distribution with support at the origin. This singularity is related, through Einstein field equations, to a point source. Coordinate invariance and independence on the choice of differentiable structure of the results are addressed.
We analyse vacuum decay in rotating BTZ black hole spacetimes with the thin wall approximation. Possible parameter regions for the vacuum decay are clarified. We find that the nucleation rate is dominated by the bounce solution with the static shell configuration. The nucleation rate of the static shell decreases with the mass of the initial black hole. For a larger/smaller value of the initial black hole, the nucleation rate can be smaller/larger than that of the Coleman De Luccia vacuum decay in the pure AdS spacetime. Through the vacuum decay, the black hole gains its mass and loses the hor…
Motivated by the wide applications of thermal stability and phase transition, we investigate thermodynamic properties of charged BTZ black holes. We apply the standard method to calculate the heat capacity and the Hessian matrix and find that thermal stability of charged BTZ solutions depends on the choice of ensemble. To overcome this problem, we take into account cosmological constant as a thermodynamical variable. By this modification, we show that the ensemble dependency is eliminated and thermal stability conditions are the same in both ensembles. Then, we generalize our solutions to the …
As a charged spinning fermion drops into a charged rotating BTZ black hole, we investigate the laws of thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture with and without pressure respectively. For the case without pressure, the first law, second law, as well as the weak cosmic censorship are found to be valid. While for the case with pressure, though the first law is still valid, the second law and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture are found to be violable, depending on the charge, angular momentum, AdS radius, and their variations. In addition, in both cases, the configurations of the …

Following Bekenstein's suggestion that the horizon area of a black hole should be quantized, the discrete spectrum of the horizon area has been investigated in various ways. By considering the quasinormal mode of a black hole, we obtain the transition frequency of the black hole, analogous to the case of a hydrogen atom, in the semiclassical limit. According to Bohr's correspondence principle, this transition frequency at large quantum number is equal to classical oscillation frequency. For the corresponding classical system of periodic motion with this oscillation frequency, an action variabl…
We present exact solutions describing rotating, inhomogeneous dust with generic initial data in 2+1 dimensional AdS spacetime and show how they are smoothly matched to the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) solution in the exterior. The metrics, which are the rotational analogues of the 2+1 dimensional LeMaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) family, are described by their angular momentum and one additional constant which, together with the angular momentum, determines the energy density of the dust cloud. The weak energy condition gives a constraint on the angular momentum profile inside the cloud. Solutio…
We investigate the Noether symmetries of the Lagrangian for the stationary rotating BTZ-type three-dimensional spacetimes in $f(R)$ theory of gravity. A detailed analysis of Noether symmetries of (2+1)-dimensional rotating BTZ-type black hole spacetime model is presented. Applying the Noether symmetry approach, the first integrals (constants of motion) for each of Noether symmetries are obtained to look for the exact solutions. After solving the first integral equations depending on the form of the function $f(R)$, we derived some new (2+1)-dimensional rotating BTZ-type black hole solutions. W…
During the last few years, exact solutions that describe black holes that are bound to a two-brane in a four dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk have been constructed. In situations wherein there is a negative cosmological constant on the brane, for large masses, these solutions are exactly the rotating BTZ black holes on the brane and, in fact, describe rotating BTZ black strings in the bulk. We evaluate the canonical entropy of a free and massless scalar field (at the Hawking temperature) around the rotating BTZ black string using the brick wall model. We explicitly show that the Bekenstein-Hawk…
Viewing Hawking radiation as a 1D single quantum channel Landauer transport process, Nation et al calculated the energy flux and entropy flux from a Schwarzschild black hole without chemical potential. To generalize the method to the case with chemical potential, a rotating charged and non-charged BTZ black hole is investigated. Energy flux and entropy flux obtained are consistent with that from anomaly theory. The maximum energy flux and entropy flux are independent on the statistics of bosons or fermions.
We obtain two exact solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) in $(2+ 1)$-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The solutions are characterized by the mass $M$, angular momentum $J$, cosmological constant or (anti) de Sitter parameter $Λ$, and an electromagnetic parameter $Q$, that is related to an electric field in the first solution and to a magnetic charge for the second solution. Depending on the range of the parameters, the solutions admit a charged rotating asymptotically AdS black hole (BH) interpretation or a charged rotating asymptotically AdS tra…
We consider a three-dimensional rotating Hořava AdS black hole, that corresponds to a Lorentz-violating version of the BTZ black hole and we analyze the effect of the breaking of Lorentz invariance on the possibility that the black hole can acts as a particle accelerator by analyzing the energy in the center of mass (CM) frame of two colliding particles in the vicinity of its horizons. We find that the critical angular momentum of particles increases when the Hořava parameter $ξ$ increases and when the aether parameter $b$ increases. Also, the particles can collide on the inner horizon with ar…
By applying Newman's algorithm, the AdS_3 rotating black hole solution is ``derived'' from the nonrotating black hole solution of Banados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ). The rotating BTZ solution derived in this fashion is given in ``Boyer-Lindquist-type'' coordinates whereas the form of the solution originally given by BTZ is given in a kind of an ``unfamiliar'' coordinates which are related to each other by a transformation of time coordinate alone. The relative physical meaning between these two time coordinates is carefully studied. Since the Kerr-type and Boyer-Lindquist-type coordinates …
We study the dynamical stability of the BTZ black string against fermonic and gravitational perturbations. The BTZ black string is not always stable against these perturbations. There exist threshold values for $m^2$ related to the compactification of the extra dimension for fermonic perturbation, scalar part of the gravitational perturbation and the tensor perturbation, respectively. Above the threshold values, perturbations are stable; while below these thresholds, perturbations can be unstable. We find that this non-trivial stability behavior qualitatively agrees with that predicted by a th…
We have considered the divergence structure in the brick-wall model for the statistical mechanical entropy of a quantum field in thermal equilibrium with a black hole which {\it rotates}. Especially, the contribution to entropy from superradiant modes is carefully incorporated, leading to a result for this contribution which corrects some previous errors in the literature. It turns out that the previous errors were due to an incorrect quantization of the superradiant modes. Some of main results for the case of rotating BTZ black holes are that the entropy contribution from superradiant modes i…
Using a thin shell, the first law of thermodynamics, and a unified approach, we study the thermodymanics and find the entropy of a (2+1)-dimensional extremal rotating Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. The shell in (2+1) dimensions, i.e., a ring, is taken to be circularly symmetric and rotating, with the inner region being a ground state of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime and the outer region being the rotating BTZ spacetime. The extremal BTZ rotating black hole can be obtained in three different ways depending on the way the shell approaches its own gravitational or horizon radius…
We carry out the Hamiltonian formulation of the three- dimensional gravitational teleparallelism without imposing the time gauge condition, by rigorously performing the Legendre transform. Definition of the gravitational angular momentum arises by suitably interpreting the integral form of the constraint equation Gama^ik=0 as an angular momentum equation. The gravitational angular momentum is evaluated for the gravitational field of a rotating BTZ black hole.
We study the collision property of spinning particles near a Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. Our results show that although the center-of-mass energy of two ingoing particles diverges if one of the particles possesses a critical angular momentum, however, particle with critical angular momentum can not exist outside of the horizon due to the violation of timelike constraint. Further detailed investigation indicates that only the particle with a subcritical angular momentum is allowed to exist near an extremal rotating BTZ black hole and the corresponding collision center-of-mass e…
