We consider a metric-affine formulation of Chern-Simons modified gravity in 2 + 1 dimensions. The theory is built requiring projective invariance, and the structure of the equations is analyzed using a decomposition in terms of scalar, vectorial, and purely tensorial objects. This approach allows us to implement a perturbative approach to study the corrections that emerge around a given background solution, for which we consider a BTZ charged, non-rotating metric. We show that conditions on model parameters are necessary to keep perturbations under control, yielding a rotating solution with a constant angular momentum and magnetic field at the horizon, and a smooth decay further away. We comment on the possibility of going beyond the leading order in perturbations and on its dynamical implications.
The entropy of a BTZ black hole in the presence of gravitational Chern-Simons terms has previously been analyzed using Euclidean action formalism. In this paper we treat the BTZ solution as a two dimensional black hole by regarding the angular coordinate as a compact direction, and use Wald's Noether charge method to calculate the entropy of this black hole in the presence of higher derivative and gravitational Chern-Simons terms. The parameters labelling the black hole solution can be determined by extremizing an entropy function whose value at the extremum gives the entropy of the black hole…
We examine a Chern-Simons matrix model which we propose as a toy model for studying the quantum nature of black holes in 2+1 gravity. Its dynamics is described by two $N\times N$ matrices, representing the two spatial coordinates. The model possesses an internal SU(N) gauge symmetry, as well as an external rotation symmetry. The latter corresponds to the rotational isometry of the BTZ solution, and does not decouple from SU(N) gauge transformations. The system contains an invariant which is quadratic in the spatial coordinates. We obtain its spectrum and degeneracy, and find that the degenerac…
We study Chern-Simons black holes in d-dimensions and we calculate analytically the quasinormal modes of fermionic perturbations. Also, we consider as background the five-dimensional Chern-Simons black hole with torsion and the BTZ black hole with torsion. We have found that the quasinormal modes depend on the highest power of curvature present in the Chern-Simons theory, such as occurs for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations. We also show that the effect of the torsion is to modify the real part of the quasinormal frequencies, which modify the oscillation frequency of the field for …
We study Born-Infeld gravity coupled to a static, nonrotating electric field in $2+1$ dimensions and find exact analytical solutions. Two families of such solutions represent geodesically complete, and hence nonsingular, spacetimes. Another family represents a point-like charge with a singularity at the center. Despite the absence of rotation, these solutions resemble the charged, rotating BTZ solution of General Relativity but with a richer structure in terms of horizons. The nonsingular character of the first two families turn out to be attached to the emergence of a wormhole structure on th…
In three dimensional spacetime with negative cosmology constant, the general relativity can be written as two copies of SO$(2,1)$ Chern-Simons theory. On a manifold with boundary the Chern-Simons theory induces a conformal field theory--WZW theory on the boundary. In this paper, it is show that with suitable boundary condition for BTZ black hole, the WZW theory can reduce to a massless scalar field on the horizon.
We generate from the static charged BTZ black hole a family of spinning charged solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations in 2+1 dimensions. These solutions go over, in a suitable limit, to self-dual spinning charged solutions, which are horizonless and regular, with logarithmically divergent mass and spin. To cure this divergence, we add a topological Chern-Simons term to the gauge field action. The resulting self-dual solution is horizonless, regular, and asymptotic to the extreme BTZ black hole.
In (1+2)-dimensional Poincaré gauge gravity, we start from a Lagrangian depending on torsion and curvature which includes additionally {\em translational} and {\em Lorentzian} Chern-Simons terms. Limiting ourselves to to a specific subcase, the Mielke-Baekler (MB) model, we derive the corresponding field equations (of Einstein-Cartan-Chern-Simons type) and find the general vacuum solution. We determine the properties of this solution, in particular its mass and its angular momentum. For vanishing torsion, we recover the BTZ-solution. We also derive the general conformally flat vacuum solution …
I consider the thermodynamics of the BTZ black hole in the presence of the higher curvature and gravitational Chern-Simons terms, and its statistical entropy. I propose a new thermodynamical entropy, which being {\it non-negative} manifestly, such as the second law, as well as the first law, of thermodynamics is satisfied. I show that the new \therl entropy agrees perfectly with the statistical entropy for $all$ the values of the conformal factor of the higher curvature terms and the coupling constant of the gravitational Chern-Simons term, in contrast to some disagreements in the literatures.…
It is shown that Chern-Simons gravities in $2n+1$ dimensions admit solutions described by the same lapse function which describes the BTZ black hole in the $n=1$ case. This has been carried out explicitly for $n=1,2,3$. Moreover, it is seen that these solutions are unique.
We try to give hereafter an answer to some open questions about the definition of conserved quantities in Chern-Simons theory, with particular reference to Chern-Simons AdS_3 Gravity. Our attention is focused on the problem of global covariance and gauge invariance of the variation of Noether charges. A theory which satisfies the principle of covariance on each step of its construction is developed, starting from a gauge invariant Chern-Simons Lagrangian and using a recipe developed in gr-qc/0110104 and gr-qc/0107074 to calculate the variation of conserved quantities. The problem to give a mat…
We study several aspects of the extended thermodynamics of BTZ black holes with thermodynamic mass $M=αm + γ\frac{j}{\ell}$ and angular momentum $J = αj + γ\ell m$, for general values of the parameters $(α, γ)$ ranging from regular ($α=1, γ=0$) to exotic ($α=0, γ=1$). We show that there exist two distinct behaviours for the black holes, one when $α> γ$ ("mostly regular"), and the other when $γ< α$ ("mostly exotic"). We find that the Smarr formula holds for all $(α, γ)$. We derive the corresponding thermodynamic volumes, which we find to be positive provided $α$ and $γ$ satisfy a certain constr…
By determining the relation between topological M-theory and the Chern-Simons actions for a gauge field constructed from the Lie algebra of either SL(2,R)x SL(2,R) or SL(2,C)x SL(2,C), depending on the sign of the space-time curvature, we show that the standard and exotic actions of 3-dimensional gravity can be recovered from topological M-theory. With this result, we provide a concrete realisation of a conjecture by Dijkgraaf et al. stating that the partition function of topological M-theory is equivalent to the partition function of a black hole in a related theory. We do this for the standa…
We consider charged rotating BTZ black holes in noncommutative space by use of Chern-Simons theory formulation of $2+1$ dimensional gravity. The noncommutativity between the radial and the angular variables is introduced through the Seiberg-Witten map for gauge fields, and the deformed geometry to the first order in the noncommutative parameter is derived. It is found that the deformation also induces nontrivial torsion, and the Einstein-Cartan theory appears to be a suitable framework to investigate the equations of motion. Though the deformation is indeed nontrivial, the deformed and the ori…
The holographic description in the presence of gravitational Chern-Simons term is studied. The modified gravitational equations are integrated by using the Fefferman-Graham expansion and the holographic stress-energy tensor is identified. The stress-energy tensor has both conformal anomaly and gravitational or, if re-formulated in terms of the zweibein, Lorentz anomaly. We comment on the structure of anomalies in two dimensions and show that the two-dimensional stress-energy tensor can be reproduced by integrating the conformal and gravitational anomalies. We study the black hole entropy in th…
We consider the area and entropy spectra of black holes in topologically massive gravity with gravitational Chern-Simons term. The examples we consider are the BTZ black hole and the warped AdS black hole. For the non-rotating BTZ black hole, the area and entropy spectra are equally spaced and independent of the coupling constant $\v$ of the Chern-Simons term. For the rotating BTZ black hole case, the spectra of the inner and outer horizon areas are not equally spaced in general and dependent of the coupling constant $\v$. However the entropy spectrum is equally spaced and independent of the c…
We have studied the charged BTZ black holes in noncommutative spaces arising from two independent approaches. First, by using the Seiberg-Witten map followed by a dynamic choice of gauge in the Chern-Simons gauge theory. Second, by inducing the fuzziness in the mass and charge by a Lorentzian distribution function with the width being the same as the minimal length of the associated noncommutativity. In the first approach, we have found the existence of non-static and non-stationary BTZ black holes in noncommutative spaces for the first time in the literature, while the second approach facilit…
In this paper we obtain the entropy formula of black hole solutions of Minimal Massive Gravity (MMG) by Tachikawa method \cite{a}. Then we apply this formula for BTZ black hole solution. We find that the usual Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is modified. The modification come from Chern-Simons (CS) term and new term in MMG. The contribution of CS term, which is proportional with inner radius of horizon is not new, but last term which is due to the new term of MMG, as usual is proportional to the outer radius of horizon and is new result. Then we show that the total entropy exactly can be reproduced…
We investigate the stability of the inner horizon of a rotating BTZ black hole. We show that linear perturbations arising from smooth initial data are arbitrarily differentiable at the inner horizon if the black hole is sufficiently close to extremality. This is demonstrated for scalar fields, for massive Chern-Simons fields, for Proca fields, and for massive spin-2 fields. Thus the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is violated by a near-extremal BTZ black hole in a large class of theories. However, we show that a weaker "rough" version of the conjecture is respected. We calculate the renorm…
We study the properties of the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in (2+1)-gravity. We use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to introduce in the space of equilibrium states a $2-$dimensional thermodynamic metric whose curvature is non-vanishing, indicating the presence of thermodynamic interaction, and free of singularities, indicating the absence of phase transitions. Similar results are obtained for generalizations of the BTZ black hole which include a Chern-Simons term and a dilatonic field. Small logarithmic corrections of the…
We study a gravity model in 2+1 dimensions, arising from a generalized Chern-Simons (CS) density we call a Higgs-Chern-Simons (HCS) density. This generalizes the construction of gravitational systems resulting from non-Abelian CS densities in all odd dimensions. The new HCS densities employed here are arrived at by the usual one-step descent of new Higgs--Chern-Pontryagin (HCP) densities, the latter resulting from the dimensional reduction of Chern-Pontryagin (CP) densities in some even dimension, such that in any given dimension (including even) there is an infinite tower of such models. Here…
In the present paper, a new class of black hole solutions is constructed in even dimensional Lovelock Born-Infeld theory. These solutions are interesting since, in some respects, they are closer to black hole solutions of an odd dimensional Lovelock Chern-Simons theory than to the more usual black hole solutions in even dimensions. This hybrid behavior arises when non-Einstein base manifolds are considered. The entropies of these solutions have been analyzed using Wald formalism. These metrics exhibit a quite non-trivial behavior. Their entropies can change sign and can even be identically zer…
We discuss some interesting holographical aspects of three-dimensional higher-spin gravity with a negative cosmological constant in the framework of SL(4, R) \times SL(4, R) Chern-Simons theory. Using a recently found technique, we construct explicitly a solution that can be interpreted as spin-4 generalization of the BTZ solution, and demonstrate how W_4 symmetry and the higher-spin Ward identities arise from the bulk equations of motion coupled to spin-3 and spin-4 currents. We match the eigenvalues of a Wilson loop along the time-like direction of the BTZ to that of the spin-4 solution, and…
We study a novel phenomena of smearing of black hole horizons from the effect of space noncommutativity. We present an explicit example in $AdS_3$ space, using the Chern-Simons formulation of gravity. This produces a smeared BTZ black hole which goes beyond the classical spacetime unexpectedly and there is {\it no} reality problem in our approach with the gauge group $U(1,1) \times U(1,1)$. The horizons are smeared, due to a splitting of the Killing horizon and the apparent horizon, and there is a metric signature change to Euclidean in the smeared region. The inner boundary of the smeared reg…
We study the effect of the gravitational Chern-Simons term (GCST) in the (2+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_{2+1}$) geometry. In the context of the gauge gravity, we obtain black hole solution and its boundary WZW theory. The BTZ black hole solution can still be retrieved but its gravitational mass and angular momentum become different from their inherent values. The deformation on these quantities due to the GCST can be summarized as $SO(1,1)$ times rescaling. The boundary WZW theory is found to be chiral, i.e., composed of the right moving part and the left moving part with different Kac…
In this pedagogical note, we discuss obstacles to the usual Palatini formulations of gauge and gravity theories in presence of odd-derivative order, Chern-Simons, terms.
We give a detailed account of the cyclic $L_\infty$-algebra formulation of general relativity with cosmological constant in the Einstein-Cartan-Palatini formalism on spacetimes of arbitrary dimension and signature, which encompasses all symmetries, field equations and Noether identities of gravity without matter fields. We present a local formulation as well as a global covariant framework, and an explicit isomorphism between the two $L_\infty$-algebras in the case of parallelizable spacetimes. By duality, we show that our $L_\infty$-algebras describe the complete BV-BRST formulation of Einste…
We construct and discuss solutions of SO(1,2) x SO(1,2) Chern-Simons theory which correspond to multiple BTZ black holes. These solutions typically have additional singularities, the simplest cases being special conical singularities with a 2 pi surplus angle. There are solutions with singularities inside a common outer horizon, and other solutions with naked conical singularities. Previously such singularities have been ruled out on physical grounds, because they do not obey the geodesic equation. We find however that the Chern-Simons gauge symmetry may be used to locate all such singularitie…
In 2+1 dimensional Chern-Simons gravity, Wilson loops in the three dimensional Anti de Sitter group, $SO(2,2)$, reproduce the spinning black hole of Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) by naturally duplicating the necessary identification of points of a four dimensional globally $SO(2,2)$ invariant space in which the hole appears as an embedding.
We study the three-dimensional gravity with torsion given by the Mielke-Baekler (MB) model coupled to gravitational Chern-Simons term, and that possess electric charge described by Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics. We find and discuss this theory's charged black holes solutions and uncharged solutions. We find that for vanishing torsion our solutions by means of a coordinate transformation can be written as three-dimensional Chern-Simons black holes. We also discuss a special case of this theory, Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) at chiral point, and we show that the logarithmic solution…
Chern-Simons (CS) modified gravity with a prescribed CS scalar field does not admit rotating black hole solutions with spherical topology of the horizon. In this paper, we show that it does admit rotating {\it black hole/string} solutions with cylindrical topology of the horizon and present two intriguing physical examples of such configurations. First, we show that the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) stationary black string, that is obtained by adding on a spacelike flat dimension to the BTZ black hole metric of three-dimensional gravity, solves the field equations of CS modified gravity wit…
We examine the connection between three dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant and two-dimensional CFT via the Chern-Simons formulation. A set of generalized spectral flow transformations are shown to yield new sectors of solutions. One implication is that the microscopic calculation of the entropy of the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole is corrected by a multiplicative factor with the result that it saturates the Bekenstein-Hawking expression.
The purpose of this review is to describe in some detail the mathematical relationship between geometrodynamics and connection dynamics in the context of the classical theories of 2+1 and 3+1 gravity. I analyze the standard Einstein-Hilbert theory (in any spacetime dimension), the Palatini and Chern-Simons theories in 2+1 dimensions, and the Palatini and self-dual theories in 3+1 dimensions. I also couple various matter fields to these theories and briefly describe a pure spin-connection formulation of 3+1 gravity. I derive the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion from an action principle and pe…
We construct static codimension-two branes in any odd dimension D, with negative cosmological constant, and show that they are exact solutions of Chern-Simons (super)gravity theory for (super)AdS coupled to external sources. The stability of these solutions is analyzed by counting the number of preserved supersymmetries. It is shown that static massive (D-3)-branes are unstable unless some suitable gauge fields are added and the brane is extremal. In particular, in three dimensions, a 0-brane is recognized as the negative mass counterpart of the BTZ black hole. For these 0-branes, we write exp…
A variant of the ADT method for the determination of gravitational charges as integrals at infinity is applied to "Chern-Simons-like" theories of 3D gravity, and the result is used to find the mass and angular momentum of the BTZ black hole considered as a solution of a variety of massive 3D gravity field equations. The results agree with many obtained previously by other methods, including our own results for "Minimal Massive Gravity", but they disagree with others, including recently reported results for "Exotic Massive Gravity". We also find the central charges of the asymptotic conformal s…
We calculate the density of states of the 2+1 dimensional BTZ black hole in the micro- and grand-canonical ensembles. Our starting point is the relation between 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity and quantised Chern-Simons theory. In the micro-canonical ensemble, we find the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy by relating a Kac-Moody algebra of global gauge charges to a Virasoro algebra with a classical central charge via a twisted Sugawara construction. This construction is valid at all values of the black hole radius. At infinity it gives the asymptotic isometries of the black hole, and at the horizon …
In the Loop Quantum Gravity, black holes (or even more general Isolated Horizons) are described by a SU(2) Chern-Simons theory. There is an equivalent formulation of the horizon degrees of freedom in terms of a U(1) gauge theory which is just a gauged fixed version of the SU(2) theory. These developments will be surveyed here. Quantum theory based on either formulation can be used to count the horizon micro-states associated with quantum geometry fluctuations and from this the micro-canonical entropy can be obtained. We shall review the computation in SU(2) formulation. Leading term in the ent…
We review some relevant results in the context of higher spin black holes in three-dimensional spacetimes, focusing on their asymptotic behaviour and thermodynamic properties. For simplicity, we mainly discuss the case of gravity nonminimally coupled to spin-3 fields, being nonperturbatively described by a Chern-Simons theory of two independent sl(3,R) gauge fields. Since the analysis is particularly transparent in the Hamiltonian formalism, we provide a concise discussion of their basic aspects in this context; and as a warming up exercise, we briefly analyze the asymptotic behaviour of pure …
