We examine the conjecture that black holes violating the reverse isoperimetric inequality have negative specific heat at constant volume $C_V$. We test this conjecture on the family of generalized exotic Bañados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli (BTZ) black holes and find that $C_V$ can be positive even when the reverse isoperimetric inequality is violated, providing a counter example to the conjecture. However in all cases where $C_V$ is positive, the specific heat at constant pressure $C_P$ is negative, indicating that generalized exotic black holes are thermodynamically unstable, suggesting that a broader version of the conjecture might hold.
We construct the thermodynamic geometry of $2+1$ dimensional normal (exotic) BTZ black hole regarding to the fluctuation of cosmological constant. We argue that while the thermodynamic geometry of black hole without fluctuation of cosmological constant is a two dimensional flat spaces, the three dimensional thermodynamics parameters space including the cosmological constant as a fluctuating parameter will be curved. Some consequence of the fluctuation of cosmological constant will be investigated. We show that such fluctuation leads to a thermodynamics curvature which is correctly singular at …
A number of three-dimensional (3D) gravity models, such as 3D conformal gravity, admit "exotic" black hole solutions: the metric is the same as the BTZ metric of 3D Einstein gravity but with reversed roles for mass and angular momentum, and an entropy proportional to the length of the inner horizon instead of the event horizon. Here we show that the BTZ solutions of the "exotic" 3D Einstein gravity (with parity-odd action but Einstein field equations) are exotic black holes, and we investigate their thermodynamics. The first and second laws of black hole thermodynamics still apply, and the ent…
An exotic Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole has an angular momentum larger than its mass in three dimension (3D), which suggests the possibility that cosmic censorship could be violated if angular momentum is extracted by the Penrose process. In this paper, we propose a mass formula for the exotic BTZ black hole and show no violation of weak cosmic censorship in the gedanken process above by understanding properly its mass formula. Unlike the other black holes, the total energy of the exotic BTZ black hole is represented by the angular momentum instead of the mass, which supports a b…
In this work, we present a study to probe the nature of interactions between black hole microstructures for the case of the BTZ black holes. Even though BTZ black holes without any angular momentum or electric charge thermodynamically behave as an ideal gas, i.e. with non-interacting microstructures; in the presence of electric charge or angular momentum, BTZ black holes are associated with repulsive interactions among the microstructures. We extend the study to the case of exotic BTZ black holes with mass $M = αm + γ\frac{j}{l}$ and angular momentum $J=αj + γl m$, for arbitrary values of $ (α…
In this work, we consider rotating BTZ black hole in three dimensions which is dual of one dimensional holographic superconductors. We applied higher order corrections of the entropy, which interpreted as quantum corrections, to the thermodynamics quantities and study modified thermodynamics. We investigate stability of rotating BTZ black hole under effects of higher order quantum corrections, and find that they affect stability of black hole. So, the small black hole has some instabilities and critical points due to the quantum effects. We also study effect of correction terms on the dual pic…
By determining the relation between topological M-theory and the Chern-Simons actions for a gauge field constructed from the Lie algebra of either SL(2,R)x SL(2,R) or SL(2,C)x SL(2,C), depending on the sign of the space-time curvature, we show that the standard and exotic actions of 3-dimensional gravity can be recovered from topological M-theory. With this result, we provide a concrete realisation of a conjecture by Dijkgraaf et al. stating that the partition function of topological M-theory is equivalent to the partition function of a black hole in a related theory. We do this for the standa…
In this paper, we study the charged and uncharged BTZ counterpart of the Black-Bounce proposed by Simpson and Visser recently. For the uncharged case, we find that the temperature is not modified by the bounce parameter. We also find that the wormhole side of the solution must always be supported by exotic matter over the throat. For the charged case we find that the thermodynamics is changed and the bounce parameter controls a phase transition, affecting the sign of the heat capacity and therefore the stability of the system. For the uncharged case, we find that there are no stable orbits for…
We analyze certain aspects of BTZ black holes in massive theory of gravity. The black hole solution is obtained by using the Vainshtein and dRGT mechanism, which is asymptotically AdS with an electric charge. We study the Hawking radiation using the tunneling formalism as well as analyze the black hole chemistry for such system. Subsequently, we use the thermodynamic pressure-volume diagram to explore the efficiency of the Carnot heat engine for this system. Some of the important features arising from our solution include the non-existence of quantum effects, critical Van der Walls behaviour, …
We study several aspects of the extended thermodynamics of BTZ black holes with thermodynamic mass $M=αm + γ\frac{j}{\ell}$ and angular momentum $J = αj + γ\ell m$, for general values of the parameters $(α, γ)$ ranging from regular ($α=1, γ=0$) to exotic ($α=0, γ=1$). We show that there exist two distinct behaviours for the black holes, one when $α> γ$ ("mostly regular"), and the other when $γ< α$ ("mostly exotic"). We find that the Smarr formula holds for all $(α, γ)$. We derive the corresponding thermodynamic volumes, which we find to be positive provided $α$ and $γ$ satisfy a certain constr…
It has been recently observed that a scalar field with Robin boundary conditions (RBCs) can trigger both a superradiant and a bulk instability for a BTZ black hole (BH). To understand the generality and scrutinize the origin of this behavior, we consider here the superradiant instability of a Kerr BH confined either in a mirror-like cavity or in AdS space, triggered also by a scalar field with RBCs. These boundary conditions are the most general ones that ensure the cavity/AdS space is an isolated system, and include, as a particular case, the commonly considered Dirichlet boundary conditions …
Exotic compact objects, horizonless spacetimes with reflective properties, have intriguingly been suggested by some quantum-gravity models as alternatives to classical black-hole spacetimes. A remarkable feature of spinning horizonless compact objects with reflective boundary conditions is the existence of a {\it discrete} set of critical surface radii, $\{r_{\text{c}}({\bar a};n)\}^{n=\infty}_{n=1}$, which can support spatially regular static ({\it marginally-stable}) scalar field configurations (here ${\bar a}\equiv J/M^2$ is the dimensionless angular momentum of the exotic compact object). …
Locally AdS$_{d-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ uniform black strings (UBS) in the presence of a massless scalar field are believed to avoid the onset of the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instability in $d\ge4$ as no tachyonic modes exist in the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We present analytic and numerical evidence of GL modes in the Lichnerowicz spectrum indicating that AdS$_{d-1}$ UBSs are classically and thermodynamically unstable at the linear level in $d>4$. In $d=4$, we confirm that uniform BTZ$_3$ strings are indeed stable as previously suggested. We propose that linear instabilities of blac…
Using the fact that theories of gravity with asymptotically three-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometries have dual descriptions as two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), we present the first study in field theory of the thermodynamic volume of various black hole solutions. We explain in general two-dimensional CFT terms why the presence of a thermodynamic volume can render certain black hole solutions "super-entropic". Super-entropicity simply results from the fact that the Cardy formula, which gives the gravitational Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, can over-count the CFT entropy. The exa…
The two-sided BTZ black hole has been instrumental in elucidating several aspects of AdS/CFT. Similarly, multiboundary wormholes provide a useful and rich arena in which probing questions of quantum gravity can be posed and explored. In this work, we find the explicit forms of the Killing vectors needed to construct three-boundary wormholes, with and without rotation, as quotients of AdS$_3$. We ensure that our method captures the full moduli space of such wormholes and elaborate on the generalization of our procedure to more exotic multiboundary spaces, including higher genus.
Classical phenomenological aspects of acoustic perturbations on a draining bathtub geometry where a surface with reflectivity $\mathcal{R}$ is set at a small distance from the would-be acoustic horizon, which is excised, are addressed. Like most exotic compact objects featuring an ergoregion but not a horizon, this model is prone to instabilities when $|\mathcal{R}|^2\approx 1$. However, stability can be attained for sufficiently slow drains when $|\mathcal{R}|^2\lesssim70\%$. It is shown that the superradiant scattering of acoustic waves is more effective when their frequency approaches one o…
A variant of the ADT method for the determination of gravitational charges as integrals at infinity is applied to "Chern-Simons-like" theories of 3D gravity, and the result is used to find the mass and angular momentum of the BTZ black hole considered as a solution of a variety of massive 3D gravity field equations. The results agree with many obtained previously by other methods, including our own results for "Minimal Massive Gravity", but they disagree with others, including recently reported results for "Exotic Massive Gravity". We also find the central charges of the asymptotic conformal s…
Hawking's area theorem can be understood from a quasi-stationary process in which a black hole accretes $positive$ energy matter, ``independent of the details of the gravity action''. I use this process to study the dynamics of the ``inner'' as well as the outer horizons for various black holes which include the recently discovered exotic black holes and three-dimensional black holes in higher derivative gravities as well as the usual BTZ black hole and the Kerr black hole in four dimensions. I find that the area for the inner horizon ``can decrease'', rather than increase, with the quasi-stat…
The superradiant instability of Kerr-AdS black holes is studied by numerically solving the full 3+1 dimensional Einstein equations. We find that the superradiant instability results in a two stage process with distinct initial and secondary instabilities. At the end of the secondary instability the geometry oscillates at several distinct fundamental frequencies -- a multi-oscillating black hole. The multi-oscillating black hole is remarkably close to a black resonator, albeit with a bit of gravitational hair. During the hairy black resonator epoch, the evolution of the horizon area is consiste…
Recent investigations of the pseudospectrum in black hole spacetimes have shown that quasinormal mode frequencies suffer from spectral instabilities. This phenomenon may severely affect gravitational-wave spectroscopy and limit precision tests of general relativity. We extend the pseudospectrum analysis to horizonless exotic compact objects which possess a reflective surface arbitrarily close to the Schwarzschild radius, and find that their quasinormal modes also suffer from an overall spectral instability. Even though all the modes themselves decay monotonically, the pseudospectrum contours o…
Rapidly rotating black holes are known to develop instabilities in the presence of a sufficiently light boson, a process which becomes efficient when the boson's Compton wavelength is roughly the size of the black hole. This phenomenon, known as black hole superradiance, generates an exponentially growing boson cloud at the expense of the rotational energy of the black hole. For astrophysical black holes with $M \sim \mathcal{O}(10) \, M_\odot$, the superradiant condition is achieved for bosons with $m_b \sim \mathcal{O}(10^{-11} ) \, {\rm eV}$; intriguingly, photons traversing the intergalact…
