We construct the partition function of 1/8 BPS dyons in type II string theory on T^6 from counting of microstates of a D1-D5 system in Taub-NUT space. Our analysis extends the earlier ones by Shih, Strominger and Yin and by Pioline by taking into account the walls of marginal stability on which a 1/8 BPS dyon can decay into a pair of half-BPS dyons. Across these walls the dyon spectrum changes discontinuously, and as a result the spectrum is not manifestly invariant under S-duality transformation of the charges. However the partition function is manifestly S-duality invariant and takes the same form in all domains of the moduli space separated by walls of marginal stability, -- the spectra in different domains being obtained by choosing different integration contours along which we carry out the Fourier transform of the partition function. The jump in the spectrum across a wall of marginal stability, calculated from the behaviour of the partition function at an appropriate pole, reproduces the expected wall crossing formula.
We derive the wall crossing formula for the decay of a quarter BPS dyon into a pair of half-BPS dyons by analyzing the quantum dynamics of multi-centered black holes in N=4 supersymmetric string theories. Our analysis encompasses the cases where the final decay products are non-primitive dyons. The results are in agreement with the microscopic formula for the dyon spectrum in the special case of heterotic string theory on T^6.
We describe a kinematical analogy for the marginal decay of 1/4-BPS dyons in 4-dimensional N=4 string compactifications. In this analogy, the electric and magnetic charges play the role of spatial momenta, the BPS mass plays the role of energy, and 1/2-BPS dyons correspond to massless particles. Using SO(12,1) "Lorentz" invariance and standard kinematical formulae in particle physics, we provide simple derivations of the curves of marginal stability. We also show how these curves map into the momentum ellipsoid, and propose some applications of this analogy.
We derive the general form of the moduli-space effective action for the long-range interaction of two BPS dyons in N=2 gauge theories. This action determines the bound state structure of various BPS and non-BPS states near marginal stability curves, and we utilise it to compute the leading correction to the BPS-mass of zero-torsion non-BPS bound states close to marginal stability.
The spectrum of quarter BPS dyons in N=4 supersymmetric string theories can change as the asymptotic moduli cross walls of marginal stability on which the dyon can break apart into a pair of half BPS states. In this paper we classify these marginal stability walls and examine this phenomenon in the context of exact dyon spectrum found in a class of N=4 supersymmetric string theories. We argue that the dyon partition functions in different domains separated by marginal stability walls are the same, but the choice of integration contour needed for extracting the degeneracies from the partition f…
The exact spectrum of dyons in a class of N=4 supersymmetric string theories is known to change discontinuously across walls of marginal stability. We show that the change in the degeneracy across the walls of marginal stability can be accounted for precisely by the entropy of two centered small black holes which disappear as we cross the walls of marginal stability.
Recently, using supergravity analysis, a hyperbolic reflection group was found to underlie the structure of wall-crossing, or the discontinuous moduli dependence of the supersymmetric index due to the presence of walls of marginal stability, of the BPS dyons in the N=4, d=4 compactification. In this paper we work in the regime where four-dimensional gravity decouples and we show how the presence of such a group structure can be easily understood as a consequence of the supersymmetry of a system of (p,q) five-brane network, or equivalently the holomorphicity of the Riemann surface wrapped by th…
We determine the generating functions of 1/4 BPS dyons in a class of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ string vacua arising as CHL orbifolds of $K3 \times T^2$, a classification of which has been recently completed. We show that all such generating functions obey some simple physical consistency conditions that are very often sufficient to fix them uniquely. The main constraint we impose is the absence of unphysical walls of marginal stability: discontinuities of 1/4 BPS degeneracies can only occur when 1/4 BPS dyons decay into pairs of 1/2 BPS states. Formally, these generating functions in spacetime can be…
The degeneracy of quarter BPS dyons in N=4 supersymmetric string theories is known to jump across walls of marginal stability on which a quarter BPS dyon can decay into a pair of half BPS dyons. We show that as long as the electric and magnetic charges of the original dyon are primitive elements of the charge lattice, the subspaces of the moduli space on which a quarter BPS dyon becomes marginally unstable against decay into a pair of quarter BPS dyons or a half BPS dyon and a quarter BPS dyon are of codimension two or more. As a result any pair of generic points in the moduli space can be con…
We study general two-body decays of primitive and non-primitive 1/4-BPS dyons in four-dimensional type IIB string compactifications. We find a ``master equation'' for marginal stability that generalises the curve found by Sen for half-BPS decay, and analyse this equation in a variety of cases including decays to 1/4-BPS products. For half-BPS decays, an interesting and useful relation is exhibited between walls of marginal stability and the mathematics of Farey sequences and Ford circles. We exhibit an example in which two curves of marginal stability intersect in the interior of moduli space.
The original proposal of Dijkgraaf, Verlinde and Verlinde for the quarter BPS dyon partition function in heterotic string theory on T^6 is known to correctly produce the degeneracy of dyons of torsion 1, i.e. dyons for which gcd(Q\wedge P)=1. We propose a generalization of this formula for dyons of arbitrary torsion. Our proposal satisfies the constraints coming from S-duality invariance, wall crossing formula, black hole entropy and the gauge theory limit. Furthermore using our proposal we derive a general wall crossing formula that is valid even when both the decay products are non-primitive…
We propose a general set of constraints on the partition function of quarter BPS dyons in any N=4 supersymmetric string theory by drawing insight from known examples, and study the consequences of this proposal. The main ingredients of our analysis are duality symmetries, wall crossing formula and black hole entropy. We use our analysis to constrain the dyon partition function for two hitherto unknown cases -- the partition function of dyons of torsion two (i.e. gcd(Q\wedge P)=2) in heterotic string theory on T^6 and the partition function of dyons carrying untwisted sector electric charge in …
We use continued fractions to perform a systematic and explicit characterization of the decays of two-centred dyonic black holes in $4D$ $\mathcal{N} =4$ heterotic $\mathbb{Z}_N$ CHL models. Thereby we give a new exact solution for the problem of counting decadent dyons in these models.
The exact spectrum of dyons in a class of N=4 supersymmetric string theories gives us information about dyon spectrum in N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories. This in turn can be translated into prediction about the BPS spectrum of three string junctions on a configuration of three parallel D3-branes. We show that this prediction agrees with the known spectrum of three string junction in different domains in the moduli space separated by walls of marginal stability.
Following the suggestion of hep-th/0506249 and hep-th/0612011, we represent quarter BPS dyons in N=4 supersymmetric string theories as string network configuration and explore the role of genus two surfaces in determining the spectrum of such dyons. Our analysis leads to the correct contour prescription for integrating the partition function to determine the spectrum in different domains of the moduli space separated by the walls of marginal stability.
As a novel application of string junctions, we provide evidence for the existence of stable non-BPS dyons with magnetic charge greater than 1 in (the semiclassical regime of) N=2 SU(2) Super-Yang-Mills theory. In addition, we find a new curve of marginal stability. Moduli space is therefore divided into four regions, each containing a different stable particle spectrum.
We study spectrum of D=2 N=(2,2) QED with N+1 massive charged chiral multiplets, with care given to precise supermultiplet countings. In the infrared the theory flows to CP^N model with twisted masses, where we construct generic flavored kink solitons for the large mass regime, and study their quantum degeneracies. These kinks are qualitatively different and far more numerous than those of small mass regime, with features reminiscent of multi-pronged (p,q) string web, complete with the wall-crossing behavior. It has been also conjectured that spectrum of this theory is equivalent to the hyperm…
We formulate supersymmetric low energy dynamics for BPS dyons in strongly-coupled N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories, and derive wall-crossing formulae thereof. For BPS states made up of a heavy core state and n probe (halo) dyons around it, we derive a reliable supersymmetric moduli dynamics with 3n bosonic coordinates and 4n fermionic superpartners. Attractive interactions are captured via a set of supersymmetric potential terms, whose detail depends only on the charges and the special Kaehler data of the underlying N=2 theories. The small parameters that control the approximation are not electric …
To a domain wall or string object, Noether charge and topological spatial objects can be attracted, forming a composite BPS (Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield) object. We consider two field theories and derive a new BPS bound on composite linear solitons involving multiple charges. Among the BPS objects `supertubes' appear when the wall or string tension is canceled by the bound energy, and could take an arbitrary closed curve. In our theories, supertubes manifest as Chern-Simons solitons, dyonic instantons, charged semi-local vortices, and dyonic instantons on vortex flux sheet.
The dyonic 1/4-BPS states in 4D string theory with N=4 spacetime supersymmetry are counted by a Siegel modular form. The pole structure of the modular form leads to a contour dependence in the counting formula obscuring its duality invariance. We exhibit the relation between this ambiguity and the (dis-)appearance of bound states of 1/2-BPS configurations. Using this insight we propose a precise moduli-dependent contour prescription for the counting formula. We then show that the degeneracies are duality-invariant and are correctly adjusted at the walls of marginal stability to account for the…
We continue our study of 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) composite solitons of vortex strings, domain walls and boojums in N=2 supersymmetric Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions. In this work, we numerically confirm that a boojum appearing at an end point of a string on a thick domain wall behaves as a magnetic monopole with a fractional charge in three dimensions. We introduce a "magnetic" scalar potential whose gradient gives magnetic fields. Height of the magnetic potential has a geometrical meaning that is shape of the domain wall. We find a semi-local extension of boojum wh…
We outline a comprehensive and first-principle solution to the wall-crossing problem in D=4 N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories. We start with a brief review of the multi-centered nature of the typical BPS states and recall how the wall-crossing problem thus becomes really a bound state formation/dissociation problem. Low energy dynamics for arbitrary collections of dyons is derived, from Seiberg-Witten theory, with the proximity to the so-called marginal stability wall playing the role of the small expansion parameter. We find that, surprisingly, the $\mathbb{R}^{3n}$ low energy dynamics of n+1 BPS d…
We address a number of puzzles relating to the proposed formulae for the degeneracies of dyons in orbifold compactifications of the heterotic string to four dimensions with $N =4$ supersymmetry. The partition function for these dyons is given in terms of Siegel modular forms associated with genus-two Riemann surfaces. We point out a subtlety in demonstrating S-duality invariance of the resulting degeneracies and give a prescription that makes the invariance manifest. We show, using M-theory lift of string webs, that the genus-two contribution captures the degeneracy only if a specific irreduci…
The appearance of a generalized (or Borcherds-) Kac-Moody algebra in the spectrum of BPS dyons in N=4, d=4 string theory is elucidated. From the low-energy supergravity analysis, we identify its root lattice as the lattice of the T-duality invariants of the dyonic charges, the symmetry group of the root system as the extended S-duality group PGL(2,Z) of the theory, and the walls of Weyl chambers as the walls of marginal stability for the relevant two-centered solutions. This leads to an interpretation for the Weyl group as the group of wall-crossing, or the group of discrete attractor flows. F…
Motivated by recent advances in Donaldson-Thomas theory, four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ string-string duality is examined in a reduced rank theory on a less studied BPS sector. In particular we identify candidate partition functions of "untwisted" quarter-BPS dyons in the heterotic $\mathbb{Z}_2$ CHL model by studying the associated chiral genus two partition function, based on the M-theory lift of string webs argument by Dabholkar and Gaiotto. This yields meromorphic Siegel modular forms for the Iwahori subgroup $B(2) \subset \text{Sp}_4 (\mathbb{Z}) $ which generate BPS indices for dyons w…
The weak coupling spectrum of BPS saturated states of pure $N=2$ supersymmetric SU$(n)$ gauge theory is investigated. The method uses known results on the dyon spectrum of the analogous theory with $N=4$ supersymmetry, along with the action on these states of the semi-classical monodromy transformations. For dyons whose magnetic charge is not a simple root of the Lie algebra, it is found that the weak coupling region is divided into a series of domains, for which the dyons have different electric charge, separated by walls on which the dyons decay. The proposed spectrum is shown to be consiste…
We study domain wall solitons in the relativistic self-dual Chern-Simons Higgs systems by the dimensional reduction method to two dimensional spacetime. The Bogomolny bound on the energy is given by two conserved quantities in a similar way that the energy bound for BPS dyons is set in some Yang-Mills-Higgs systems in four dimensions. We find the explicit soliton configurations which saturate the energy bound and their nonrelativistic counter parts. We also discuss the underlying N=2 supersymmetry.
We study the properties of walls of marginal stability for BPS decays in a class of N=2 theories. These theories arise in N=2 string compactifications obtained as freely acting orbifolds of N=4 theories, such theories include the STU model and the FHSV model. The cross sections of these walls for a generic decay in the axion-dilaton plane reduce to lines or circles. From the continuity properties of walls of marginal stability we show that central charges of BPS states do not vanish in the interior of the moduli space. Given a charge vector of a BPS state corresponding to a large black hole in…
Following Sen[arXiv:0911.1563], we study the counting of (`twisted') BPS states that contribute to twisted helicity trace indices in four-dimensional CHL models with N=4 supersymmetry. The generating functions of half-BPS states, twisted as well as untwisted, are given in terms of multiplicative eta products with the Mathieu group, M_{24}, playing an important role. These multiplicative eta products enable us to construct Siegel modular forms that count twisted quarter-BPS states. The square-roots of these Siegel modular forms turn out be precisely a special class of Siegel modular forms, the …
We explore the properties of non-BPS multi-centre extremal black holes in ungauged N=2 supergravity coupled to n_v vector multiplets, as described by solutions to the composite non-BPS linear system. After setting up an explicit description that allows for arbitrary non-BPS charges to be realised at each centre, we study the structure of the resulting solutions. Using these results, we prove that the binding energy of the composite is always positive and we show explicitly the existence of walls of marginal stability for generic choices of charges. The two-centre solutions only exist on a hype…
In four dimensional string theories with N=4 and N=8 supersymmetries one can often define twisted index in a subspace of the moduli space which captures additional information on the partition function than the ones contained in the usual helicity trace index. We compute several such indices in type IIB string theory on K3 x T^2 and T^6, and find that they share many properties with the usual helicity trace index that captures the spectrum of quarter BPS states in N=4 supersymmetric string theories. In particular the partition function is a modular form of a subgroup of Sp(2,Z) and the jumps a…
We revise the SU(3)-invariant sector of $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity with dyonic SO(8) gaugings. By using the embedding tensor formalism, analytic expressions for the scalar potential, superpotential(s) and fermion mass terms are obtained as a function of the electromagnetic phase $ω$ and the scalars in the theory. Equipped with these results, we explore non-supersymmetric AdS critical points at $ω\neq 0$ for which perturbative stability could not be analysed before. The $ω$-dependent superpotential is then used to derive first-order flow equations and obtain new BPS domain-wall solutions at $…
In $D=4,N=2$ theories on $R^{3,1}$, the index receives contributions not only from single-particle BPS states, counted by the BPS indices, but also from multi-particle states made of BPS constituents. In a recent work [arXiv:1406.2360], a general formula expressing the index in terms of the BPS indices was proposed, which is smooth across walls of marginal stability and reproduces the expected single-particle contributions. In this note, I analyze the two-particle contributions predicted by this formula, and show agreement with the spectral asymmetry of the continuum of scattering states in th…
We consider the long range forces between two BPS particles on the Coulomb branch of N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories. The 1/r potential is unambiguously fixed, even at strong coupling, by the moduli dependence of central charges supported by the BPS states. The effective Coulombic coupling vanishes on marginal stability curves, while sign changes on crossing these curves explain the restructuring of the spectrum of composite BPS states. This restructuring proceeds via the delocalization of the composite state on approach to the curve of marginal stability. Therefore the spectrum of B…
We study the BPS spectrum and walls of marginal stability of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory in four dimensions with gauge group SU(n) and $n\le N_{f}<2n$ fundamental flavours at the root of the Higgs branch. The strong-coupling spectrum of this theory was conjectured in hep-th/9902134 to coincide with that of the two-dimensional supersymmetric $\mathbb{CP}^{2n-N_{f}-1}$ sigma model. Using the Kontsevich--Soibelman wall-crossing formula, we start with the conjectured strong-coupling spectrum and extrapolate it to all other regions of the moduli space. In the weak-coupling regime, our…
We show that the generating function of electrically charged 1/2-BPS states in N=4 supersymmetric Z_N-CHL orbifolds of the heterotic string on T^6 are given by multiplicative eta-products. The eta-products are determined by the cycle shape of the corresponding symplectic involution in the dual type II picture. This enables us to complete the construction of the genus-two Siegel modular forms due to David, Jatkar and Sen [arXiv:hep-th/0609109] for Z_N orbifolds when N is non-prime. We study the Z_4 CHL orbifold in detail and show that the associated Siegel modular forms, Φ_3(Z) and \widetildeΦ_…
We study BPS saturated domain walls in the supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory. For a theory with a very light adjoint scalar (mass <~ Lambda/400) we use the perturbed N=2 Seiberg-Witten theory to calculate the actual field configuration of the domain wall. The wall has a sandwich-like five-layer structure of three distinct phases -- electric confinement, Coulomb and oblique confinement -- separated by two separate transition regions. For larger scalar masses, the three-phase structure disappears and the Seiberg-Witten theory becomes inadequate because of two major problems: First, the higher-de…
Motivated by precision counting of BPS black holes, we analyze six-derivative couplings in the low energy effective action of three-dimensional string vacua with 16 supercharges. Based on perturbative computations up to two-loop, supersymmetry and duality arguments, we conjecture that the exact coefficient of the $\nabla^2(\nablaϕ)^4$ effective interaction is given by a genus-two modular integral of a Siegel theta series for the non-perturbative Narain lattice times a specific meromorphic Siegel modular form. The latter is familiar from the Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (DVV) conjecture on exact…
We discuss the restructuring of the BPS spectrum which occurs on certain submanifolds of the moduli/parameter space -- the curves of the marginal stability (CMS) -- using quasiclassical methods. We argue that in general a `composite' BPS soliton swells in coordinate space as one approaches the CMS and that, as a bound state of two `primary' solitons, its dynamics in this region is determined by non-relativistic supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Near the CMS the bound state has a wave function which is highly spread out. Precisely on the CMS the bound state level reaches the continuum, the comp…
It is shown how monopoles and dyons decay on curves of marginal stability in the moduli space of vacua at weak coupling in pure N=2 gauge theory with arbitrary gauge group. The analysis involves a semi-classical treatment of the monopole and rests on the fact that the monopole moduli space spaces for a magnetic charge vector equal to a non-simple root enlarge discontinuously at the curves of marginal stability. This enlargement of the moduli space describes the freedom for the monopole to be separated into stable constituent monopoles. Such decays do not occur in the associated theory with N=4…
We study the spectrum of BPS domain walls within the parameter space of N=1 U(N) gauge theories with adjoint matter and a cubic superpotential. Using a low energy description obtained by compactifying the theory on R^3 x S^1, we examine the wall spectrum by combining direct calculations at special points in the parameter space with insight drawn from the leading order potential between minimal walls, i.e those interpolating between adjacent vacua. We show that the multiplicity of composite BPS walls -- as characterised by the CFIV index -- exhibits discontinuities on marginal stability curves …
We derive supersymmetric quantum mechanics of n BPS objects with 3n position degrees of freedom and 4n fermionic partners with SO(4) R-symmetry. The potential terms, essential and sufficient for the index problem for non-threshold BPS states, are universal, and 2(n-1) dimensional classical moduli spaces M_n emerge from zero locus of the potential energy. We emphasize that there is no natural reduction of the quantum mechanics to M_n, contrary to the conventional wisdom. Nevertheless, via an index-preserving deformation that breaks supersymmetry partially, we derive a Dirac index on M_n as the …
The vacuum structure and spectra of two-dimensional gauge theories with N=(2,2) supersymmetry are investigated. These theories admit a twisted mass term for charged chiral matter multiplets. In the case of a U(1) gauge theory with N chiral multiplets of equal charge, an exact description of the BPS spectrum is obtained for all values of the twisted masses. The BPS spectrum has two dual descriptions which apply in the Higgs and Coulomb phases of the theory respectively. The two descriptions are related by a massive analog of mirror symmetry: the exact mass formula which is given by a one-loop c…
We study the BPS states of a D6-brane wrapping the conifold and bound to collections of D2 and D0 branes. We find that in addition to the complexified Kahler parameter of the rigid sphere it is necessary to introduce an extra real parameter to describe BPS partition functions and marginal stability walls. The supergravity approach to BPS state-counting gives a simple derivation of results of Szendroi concerning Donaldson-Thomas theory on the noncommutative conifold. This example also illustrates some interesting limitations on the supergravity approach to BPS state-counting and wall-crossing.
We classify the stability region, marginal stability walls (MS) and split attractor flows for two-center extremal black holes in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity minimally coupled to n vector multiplets. It is found that two-center (continuous) charge orbits, classified by four duality invariants, either support a stability region ending on a MS wall or on an anti-marginal stability (AMS) wall, but not both. Therefore, the scalar manifold never contains both walls. Moreover, the BPS mass of the black hole composite (in its stability region) never vanishes in the scalar manifold. For these rea…
BPS spectra give important insights into the non-perturbative regimes of supersymmetric theories. Often from the study of BPS states one can infer properties of the geometrical or algebraic structures underlying such theories. In this paper we approach this problem from the perspective of persistent homology. Persistent homology is at the base of topological data analysis, which aims at extracting topological features out of a set of points. We use these techniques to investigate the topological properties which characterize the spectra of several supersymmetric models in field and string theo…
In four dimensional N=2 supergravity theories, BPS bound states near marginal stability are described by configurations of widely separated constituents with nearly parallel central charges. When the vacuum moduli can be dialed adiabatically until the central charges become anti -parallel, a paradox arises. We show that this paradox is always resolved by the existence of "bound state transformation walls" across which the nature of the bound state changes, although the index does not jump. We find that there are two distinct phenomena that can take place on these walls, which we call recombina…
We find the complete classical moduli space of two-centered supersymmetric solutions carrying D0 and D6 brane charge in the STU model delimited by walls of marginal stability of co-dimension one. U-duality guarantees our conclusions hold for any BPS state with negative quartic invariant. The analysis explicitly shows that the conditions of marginal stability, i.e. the integrability conditions, are generically insufficient to provide a regular supergravity solution in this model.
We describe how categorical BPS data including chain complexes of solitons, CPT pairings, and interior amplitudes jump across a wall of marginal stability in two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ models. We show that our jump formulas hold if and only if the $A_{\infty}$-categories of half-BPS branes constructed on either side of the wall are homotopy equivalent. These results can be viewed as categorical enhancements of the Cecotti-Vafa wall-crossing formula.
We examine the partition function of N=2* supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on the four-sphere in the large radius limit. We point out that the large radius partition function, at fixed N, is computed by saddle points lying on particular walls of marginal stability on the Coulomb branch of the theory on R^4. For N an even (odd) integer and θ_YM=0, (π), these include a point of maximal degeneration of the Donagi-Witten curve to a torus where BPS dyons with electric charge [N/2] become massless. We argue that the dyon singularity is the lone saddle point in the SU(2) theory, while for SU(N)…
The wall crossing formula of Kontsevich and Soibelman gives an implicit relation between the BPS indices on two sides of the wall of marginal stability by equating two symplectomorphisms constructed from the indices on two sides of the wall. The wall crossing formulae of Manschot, Pioline and the author give two apparently different explicit expressions for the BPS index on one side of the wall in terms of the BPS indices on the other side. We prove the equivalence of all the three formulae.
The spectrum of supersymmetric domain wall solitons of the Wess-Zumino model is known to be discontinuous across a curve (of marginal stability) in the moduli space of quartic superpotentials. Here we show how this phenomenon can be understood from the behavior of the long-range inter-soliton force, which we compute by a method due to Manton.
We consider two infinite families of Non-Supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacua, called Type 2) and Type 3) vacua, that arise in massive IIA supergravity with flux. We show that both families are perturbatively stable. We then examine non-perturbative decays of these vacua to other supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacua mediated by instantons in the thin wall approximation. We find that many decays are ruled out since the tension of the interpolating domain wall is too big compared to the energy difference in AdS units. In fact, within our approximations no decays of Type 2) vacua are allow…
We study the properties of the dilaton in a soft-wall background using two solutions of the Einstein equations. These solutions contain an asymptotically AdS metric with a nontrivial scalar profile that causes both the spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance and the generation of a mass gap in the particle spectrum. We first present an analytic solution, using the superpotential method, that describes a CFT spontaneously broken by a finite dimensional operator in which a light dilaton mode appears in the spectrum. This represents a tuning in the vanishing of the quartic coupling in the ef…
A new construction of BPS monodromies for 4d ${\mathcal N}=2$ theories of class S is introduced. A novel feature of this construction is its manifest invariance under Kontsevich-Soibelman wall crossing, in the sense that no information on the 4d BPS spectrum is employed. The BPS monodromy is encoded by topological data of a finite graph, embedded into the UV curve $C$ of the theory. The graph arises from a degenerate limit of spectral networks, constructed at maximal intersections of walls of marginal stability in the Coulomb branch of the gauge theory. The topology of the graph, together with…
The BPS-spectrum is known to change when moduli cross a wall of marginal stability. This paper tests the compatibility of wall-crossing with S-duality and electric-magnetic duality for N=2 supergravity. To this end, the BPS-spectrum of D4-D2-D0 branes is analyzed in the large volume limit of Calabi-Yau moduli space. Partition functions are presented, which capture the stability of BPS-states corresponding to two constituents with primitive charges and supported on very ample divisors in a compact Calabi-Yau. These functions are `mock modular invariant' and therefore confirm S-duality. Furtherm…
We describe wall-crossing for local, toric Calabi-Yau manifolds without compact four-cycles, in terms of free fermions, vertex operators, and crystal melting. Firstly, to each such manifold we associate two states in the free fermion Hilbert space. The overlap of these states reproduces the BPS partition function corresponding to the non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants, given by the modulus square of the topological string partition function. Secondly, we introduce the wall-crossing operators which represent crossing the walls of marginal stability associated to changes of the B-field …
