Combinatorics on multisets is used to deduce new upper and lower bounds on the number of numerical semigroups of each given genus, significantly improving existing ones. In particular, it is proved that the number $n_g$ of numerical semigroups of genus $g$ satisfies $2F_{g}\leq n_g\leq 1+3\cdot 2^{g-3}$, where $F_g$ denotes the $g$th Fibonacci number.
A numerical semigroup is a sub-semigroup of the natural numbers that has a finite complement. The size of its complement is called the genus and the largest number in the complement is called its Frobenius number. We consider the set of numerical semigroups with a fixed Frobenius number $f$ and analyse their genus. We find the asymptotic distribution of genus in this set of numerical semigroups and show that it is a product of a Gaussian and a power series. We show that almost all numerical semigroups with Frobenius number $f$ have genus close to $\frac{3f}{4}$. We denote the number of numeric…
We contruct a one-to-one correspondence between a subset of numerical semigroups with genus $g$ and $γ$ even gaps and the integer points of a rational polytope. In particular, we give an overview to apply this correspondence to try to decide if the sequence $(n_g)$ is increasing, where $n_g$ denotes the number of numerical semigroups with genus $g$.
We give an asymptotic estimate of the number of numerical semigroups of a given genus. In particular, if $n_g$ is the number of numerical semigroups of genus $g$, we prove that $n_g$ tends to $S ϕ^g$, where $ϕ$ is the golden ratio, and $S$ is a constant, resolving several related conjectures concerning the growth of $n_g$. In addition, we show that the proportion of numerical semigroups of genus $g$ satisfying $f < 3m$ approaches 1 as $g \rightarrow \infty$, where $m$ is the multiplicity and $f$ is the Frobenius number.
We find a relation between the genus of a quotient of a numerical semigroup $S$ and the genus of $S$ itself. We use this identity to compute the genus of a quotient of $S$ when $S$ has embedding dimension $2$. We also exhibit identities relating the Frobenius numbers and the genus of quotients of numerical semigroups that are generated by certain types of arithmetic progressions.
Let n_g denote the number of numerical semigroups of genus g. Bras-Amoros conjectured that n_g possesses certain Fibonacci-like properties. Almost all previous attempts at proving this conjecture were based on analyzing the semigroup tree. We offer a new, simpler approach to counting numerical semigroups of a given genus. Our method gives direct constructions of families of numerical semigroups, without referring to the generators or the semigroup tree. In particular, we give an improved asymptotic lower bound for n_g.
This paper aims to contribute to validate, for numerical semigroups of reasonably large genus, the so-called Conjecture of Wilf. There is no counter-example for the conjecture among the over 3*10^{10} numerical semigroups of genus up to 60, as it has been computationally verified by Fromentin and Hivert. The computations use the idea of parsing a semigroups tree, making tests in each node. As a mean to combine parsing of the semigroups tree with known theoretical results, we introduce the concept of cutting semigroup. Assume that there exists a property on numerical semigroups that implies tha…
In this paper we present a new approach to construct the set of numerical semigroups with a fixed genus. Our methodology is based on the construction of the set of numerical semigroups with fixed Frobenius number and genus. An equivalence relation is given over this set and a tree structure is defined for each equivalence class. We also provide a more efficient algorithm based in the translation of a numerical semigroup to its so-called Kunz-coordinates vector.
We study statistical properties of numerical semigroups of genus $g$ as $g$ goes to infinity. More specifically, we answer a question of Eliahou by showing that as $g$ goes to infinity, the proportion of numerical semigroups of genus $g$ with embedding dimension close to $g/\sqrt{5}$ approaches $1$. We prove similar results for the type and weight of a numerical semigroup of genus $g$.
We introduce the quasi-ordinarization transform of a numerical semigroup. This transform will allow to organize all the semigroups of a given genus in a forest rooted at all quasi-ordinary semigroups with the given genus. This construction provides an alternative approach to the conjecture on the increasingness of the number of numerical semigroups for each given genus. We elaborate on the number of nodes at each tree depth in the forest and present a few new conjectures that can be developed in the future. We prove some properties of the quasi-ordinarization transform, its relations with the …
We improve the previously best known lower and upper bounds on the number n_g of numerical semigroups of genus g. Starting from a known recursive description of the tree T of numerical semigroups, we analyze some of its properties and use them to construct approximations of T by generating trees whose nodes are labeled by certain parameters of the semigroups. We then translate the succession rules of these trees into functional equations for the generating functions that enumerate their nodes, and solve these equations to obtain the bounds. Some of our bounds involve the Fibonacci numbers, and…
Given $g\ge 1$, the number $n(g)$ of numerical semigroups $S \subset \N$ of genus $|\N \setminus S|$ equal to $g$ is the subject of challenging conjectures of Bras-Amorós. In this paper, we focus on the counting function $n(g,2)$ of \textit{two-generator} numerical semigroups of genus $g$, which is known to also count certain special factorizations of $2g$. Further focusing on the case $g=p^k$ for any odd prime $p$ and $k \ge 1$, we show that $n(p^k,2)$ only depends on the class of $p$ modulo a certain explicit modulus $M(k)$. The main ingredient is a reduction of $\gcd(p^α+1, 2p^β+1)$ to a si…
In this paper we describe an algorithm visiting all numerical semigroups up to a given genus using a well suited representation. The interest of this algorithm is that it fits particularly well the architecture of modern computers allowing very large optimizations: we obtain the number of numerical semigroups of genus g 67 and we confirm the Wilf conjecture for g 60.
We show that the number of numerical semigroups with multiplicity three, four or five and fixed genus is increasing as a function in the genus. To this end we use the Kunz polytope for these multiplicities. Counting numerical semigroups with fixed multiplicity and genus is then an integer partition problem with some extra conditions (those of membership to the Kunz polytope). For the particular case of multiplicity four, we are able to prove that the number of numerical semigroups with multiplicity four and genus $g$ is the number of partitions $x+y+z=g+6$ with $0<x\le y\le z$, $x\neq 1$, $y\n…
This paper presents a new methodology to count the number of numerical semigroups of given genus or Frobenius number. We apply generating function tools to the bounded polyhedron that classifies the semigroups with given genus (or Frobenius number) and multiplicity. First, we give theoretical results about the polynomial-time complexity of counting the number of these semigroups. We also illustrate the methodology analyzing the cases of multiplicity 3 and 4 where some formulas for the number of numerical semigroups for any genus and Frobenius number are obtained.
Let $n_g$ be the number of numerical semigroups of genus $g$. We present an approach to compute $n_g$ by using even gaps, and the question: Is it true that $n_{g+1}>n_g$? is investigated. Let $N_γ(g)$ be the number of numerical semigroups of genus $g$ whose number of even gaps equals $γ$. We show that $N_γ(g)=N_γ(3γ)$ for $γ\leq \lfloor g/3\rfloor$ and $N_γ(g)=0$ for $γ> \lfloor 2g/3\rfloor$; thus the question above is true provided that $N_γ(g+1) > N_γ(g)$ for $γ= \lfloor g/3 \rfloor +1, \ldots, \lfloor 2g/3\rfloor$. We also show that $N_γ(3γ)$ coincides with $f_γ$, the number introduced by B…
We present procedures to calculate the set of Arf numerical semigroups with given genus, given conductor and given genus and conductor. We characterize the Kunz coordinates of an Arf numerical semigroup. We also describe Arf numerical semigroups with fixed Frobenius number and multiplicity up to six.
This paper proposes a new, visual method to study numerical semigroups and the Frobenius problem. The method is based on building a so-called reduction graph, whose nodes usually correspond to monogenic semigroups, and whose edges can have multiple inputs and outputs. If such a construction is possible, then determining whether the studied semigroup is symmetric, or finding explicit forms of its Apéry set and Hilbert series, is reduced to straightforward computations assisted by a MAPLE program we made available on arXiv. This approach applies to many of the cases considered in literature, inc…
A numerical semigroup is an additive submonoid of the natural numbers with finite complement. The size of the complement is called the genus of the semigroup. How many numerical semigroups have genus equal to $g$? We outline Zhai's proof of a conjecture of Bras-Amorós that this sequence has Fibonacci-like growth. We now know that this sequence asymptotically grows as fast as the Fibonacci numbers, but it is still not known whether it is nondecreasing. We discuss this and other open problems. We highlight the many contributions made by undergraduates to problems in this area.
The use of compositions simplifies some aspects of the theory of numerical semigroups. We illustrate this by giving a new proof for the asymptotic number C((1 + $\sqrt$ 5)/2) g of numerical semigroups of genus g and by describing the constant C explicitly 1 .
A numerical semigroup is a sub-semigroup of the natural numbers that has a finite complement. Some of the key properties of a numerical semigroup are its Frobenius number F, genus g and type t. It is known that for any numerical semigroup $\frac{g}{F+1-g}\leq t\leq 2g-F$. Numerical semigroups with $t=2g-F$ are called almost symmetric, we introduce a new property that characterises them. We give an explicit characterisation of numerical semigroups with $t=\frac{g}{F+1-g}$. We show that for a fixed $α$ the number of numerical semigroups with Frobenius number $F$ and type $F-α$ is eventually cons…
We provide algorithms for performing computations in generalized numerical semigroups, that is, submonoids of $\mathbb{N}^{d}$ with finite complement in $\mathbb{N}^{d}$. These semigroups are affine semigroups, which in particular implies that they are finitely generated. For a given finite set of elements in $\mathbb{N}^d$ we show how to deduce if the monoid spanned by this set is a generalized numerical semigroup and, if so, we calculate its set of gaps. Also, given a finite set of elements in $\mathbb{N}^d$ we can determine if it is the set of gaps of a generalized numerical semigroup and, …
{\it $(N,γ)$-hyperelliptic} semigroups were introduced by Fernando Torres to encapsulate the most salient properties of Weierstrass semigroups associated to totally-ramified points of $N$-fold covers of curves of genus $γ$. Torres characterized $(2,γ)$-hyperelliptic semigroups of maximal weight whenever their genus is large relative to $γ$. Here we do the same for $(3,γ)$-hyperelliptic semigroups, and we formulate a conjecture about the general case whenever $N \geq 3$ is prime.
For the elements of a numerical semigroup which are larger than the Frobenius number, we introduce the definition of, seed, by broadening the notion of generator. This new concept allows us to explore the semigroup tree in an alternative efficient way, since the seeds of each descendant can be easily obtained from the seeds of its parent. The paper is devoted to presenting the results which are related to this approach, leading to a new algorithm for computing and counting the semigroups of a given genus.
The catenary degree is an invariant that measures the distance between factorizations of elements within a numerical semigroup. In general, all possible catenary degrees of the elements of the numerical semigroups occur as the catenary degree of one of its Betti elements. In this study, Betti elements of some telescopic numerical semigroup families with embedding dimension three were found and formulated. Then, with the help of these formulas, Frobenius numbers and genus of these families were obtained. Also, the catenary degrees of telescopic numerical semigroups were found with the help of f…
We examine properties of random numerical semigroups under a probabilistic model inspired by the Erdos-Renyi model for random graphs. We provide a threshold function for cofiniteness, and bound the expected embedding dimension, genus, and Frobenius number of random semigroups. Our results follow, surprisingly, from the construction of a very natural shellable simplicial complex whose facets are in bijection with irreducible numerical semigroups of a fixed Frobenius number and whose $h$-vector determines the probability that a particular element lies in the semigroup.
Numerical semigroups are cofinite additive submonoids of the natural numbers. In 2011, Keith and Nath illustrated an injection from numerical semigroups to integer partitions. We explore this connection between partitions and numerical semigroups with a focus on classifying the partitions that appear in the image of the injection from numerical semigroups. In particular, we count the number of partitions that correspond to numerical semigroups in terms of genus, Frobenius number, and multiplicity, with some restrictions.
In this note, we show that {\it $γ$-hyperelliptic} numerical semigroups of genus $g \gg γ$ satisfy a refinement of a well-known characteristic weight inequality due to Torres. The refinement arises from substituting the usual notion of weight by an alternative version, the $K$-weight, which we previously introduced in the course of our study of unibranch curve singularities.
For a numerical semigroup, we encode the set of primitive elements that are larger than its Frobenius number and show how to produce in a fast way the corresponding sets for its children in the semigroup tree. This allows us to present an efficient algorithm for exploring the tree up to a given genus. The algorithm exploits the second nonzero element of a numerical semigroup and the particular pseudo-ordinary case in which this element is the conductor.
For g $\ge$ 0, let n g denote the number of numerical semi-groups of genus g. A conjecture by Maria Bras-Amorós in 2008 states that the inequality n g $\ge$ n g--1 + n g--2 should hold for all g $\ge$ 2. Here we show that such an inequality holds for the very large subtree of numerical semigroups satisfying c $\le$ 3m, where c and m are the conductor and multiplicity, respectively. Our proof is given in the more flexible setting of gapsets, i.e. complements in N of numerical semigroups.
To a numerical semigroup $S$, Eliahou associated a number $E(S)$ and proved that numerical semigroups for which the associated number is non negative satisfy Wilf's conjecture. The search for counterexamples for the conjecture of Wilf is therefore reduced to semigroups which have an associated negative Eliahou number. Eliahou mentioned $5$ numerical semigroups whose Eliahou number is $-1$. The examples were discovered by Fromentin who observed that these are the only ones with negative Eliahou number among the over $10^{13}$ numerical semigroups of genus up to $60$. We prove here that for any …
In this paper we elaborate on the structure of the semigroup tree and the regularities on the number of descendants of each node observed earlier. These regularites admit two different types of behavior and in this work we investigate which of the two types takes place in particular for well-known classes of semigroups. Also we study the question of what kind of chains appear in the tree and characterize the properties (like being (in)finite) thereof. We conclude with some thoughts that show how this study of the semigroup tree may help in solving the conjecture of Fibonacci-like behavior of t…
In this paper, we prove that the numerical-semigroup-gap counting problem is #NP-complete as a main theorem. A numerical semigroup is an additive semigroup over the set of all nonnegative integers. A gap of a numerical semigroup is defined as a positive integer that does not belong to the numerical semigroup. The computation of gaps of numerical semigroups has been actively studied from the 19th century. However, little has been known on the computational complexity. In 2005, Ramirez-Alfonsin proposed a question whether or not the numerical-semigroup-gap counting problem is #P-complete. This w…
We consider the two-player game chomp on posets associated to numerical semigroups and show that the analysis of strategies for chomp is strongly related to classical properties of semigroups. We characterize, which player has a winning-strategy for symmetric semigroups, semigroups of maximal embedding dimension and several families of numerical semigroups generated by arithmetic sequences. Furthermore, we show that which player wins on a given numerical semigroup is a decidable question. Finally, we extend several of our results to the more general setting of subsemigroups of $\mathbb{N} \tim…
For numerical semigroups with three generators, we study the asymptotic behavior of weighted factorization lengths, that is, linear functionals of the coefficients in the factorizations of semigroup elements. This work generalizes many previous results, provides more natural and intuitive proofs, and yields a completely explicit error bound.
Let $f_1(n), \ldots, f_k(n)$ be polynomial functions of $n$. For fixed $n\in\mathbb{N}$, let $S_n\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be the numerical semigroup generated by $f_1(n),\ldots,f_k(n)$. As $n$ varies, we show that many invariants of $S_n$ are eventually quasi-polynomial in $n$, such as the Frobenius number, the type, the genus, and the size of the $Δ$-set. The tool we use is expressibility in the logical system of parametric Presburger arithmetic. Generalizing to higher dimensional families of semigroups, we also examine affine semigroups $S_n\subseteq \mathbb{N}^m$ generated be vectors whose coo…
Several recent papers have examined a rational polyhedron $P_m$ whose integer points are in bijection with the numerical semigroups (cofinite, additively closed subsets of the non-negative integers) containing $m$. A combinatorial description of the faces of $P_m$ was recently introduced, one that can be obtained from the divisibility posets of the numerical semigroups a given face contains. In this paper, we study the faces of $P_m$ containing arithmetical numerical semigroups and those containing certain glued numerical semigroups, as an initial step towards better understanding the full fac…
In this paper we compute the Frobenius number of certain {\em Fibonacci numerical semigroups}, that is, numerical semigroups generated by a set of Fibonacci numbers, in terms of Fibonacci numbers.
A numerical semigroup is called cyclotomic if its corresponding numerical semigroup polynomial $P_S(x)=(1-x)\sum_{s\in S}x^s$ is expressable as the product of cyclotomic polynomials. Ciolan, García-Sánchez, and Moree conjectured that for every embedding dimension at least $4$, there exists some numerical semigroup which is symmetric but not cyclotomic. We affirm this conjecture by giving an infinite class of numerical semigroup families $S_{n, t}$, which for every fixed $t$ is symmetric but not cyclotomic when $n\ge \max(8(t+1)^3,40(t+2))$ and then verify through a finite case check that the n…
Let $A \subset {\mathbb Z}$ be a finite subset. We denote by $\mathcal{B}(A)$ the set of all integers $n \ge 2$ such that $|nA| > (2n-1)(|A|-1)$, where $nA=A+\cdots+A$ denotes the $n$-fold sumset of $A$. The motivation to consider $\mathcal{B}(A)$ stems from Buchweitz's discovery in 1980 that if a numerical semigroup $S \subseteq {\mathbb N}$ is a Weierstrass semigroup, then $\mathcal{B}({\mathbb N} \setminus S) = \emptyset$. By constructing instances where this condition fails, Buchweitz disproved a longstanding conjecture by Hurwitz (1893). In this paper, we prove that for any numerical semi…
