Currently, direct-write waveguide fabrication is probably the most widely studied application of femtosecond laser micromachining in transparent dielectrics. Devices such as buried waveguides, power splitters, couplers, gratings and optical amplifiers have all been demonstrated. Waveguide properties depend critically on the sample material properties and writing laser characteristics. In this paper we discuss the challenges facing researchers using the femtosecond laser direct-write technique with specific emphasis being placed on the suitability of fused silica and phosphate glass as device hosts for different applications.

We present the realization of mid-infrared waveguide by ultrafast laser inscription technique in a chalcogenide glass. Our approach is based on multicore waveguide that consists in an alignment on a mesh of positive refractive index channels placed parallel to each other. Two different meshes are investigated with different refractive index contrasts between the channel and the glass matrix. A detailed analysis of the performances at a wavelength of 4.5 $μ$m shows propagation losses of 0.20 $\pm$ 0.05 dB/cm and coupling efficiencies higher than 60 %.
We report on the development of an ultrafast beam shaper capable of generating Bessel beams of high cone angle that maintain a high-intensity hot spot with subwavelength diameter over a propagation distance in excess of 8~mm. This generates a high-intensity focal region with extremely high aspect ratio exceeding 10~000:1. The absence of intermediate focusing in the shaper allows for shaping very high energies, up to Joule levels. We demonstrate proof of principle application of the Bessel beam shaper for stealth dicing of thick glass, up to 1~cm. We expect this high energy Bessel beam shaper w…
Ultrafast laser pulses spatially shaped as Bessel beams in dielectrics create high aspect ratio plasma channels whose relaxation can lead to the formation of nanochannels. We report a strong enhancement of the nanochannel drilling efficiency with illumination by double pulses separated by a delay between 10 to 500 ps. This enables the formation of nanochannels with diameters down to 100 nm. Experimental absorption measurements demonstrate that the increase of drilling efficiency is due to an increase of the confinement of the energy deposition. Nanochannel formation corresponds to a drastic ch…
A procedure and optical concept is introduced for ultrashort pulsed laser cleaving of transparent materials with tailored edges in a single pass. The procedure is based on holographically splitting a number of foci along the desired edge geometry including C-shaped edges with local 45° tangential angles to the surface. Single-pass, full thickness laser modifications are achieved requiring single-side access to the workpiece only without inclining the optical head. After having induced laser modifications with feed rates of 1 m/s actual separation is performed using a selective etching strategy…
Zirconium fluoride (ZBLAN) glass, the standard material used in fiber-based mid-infrared photonics, has been re-designed to enable the fabrication of high index-contrast low-loss waveguides via femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate that in contrast to pure ZBLAN, a positive index change of close to 10$^{-2}$ can be induced in hybrid zirconium/hafnium (Z/HBLAN) glasses during ultrafast laser inscription and show that this can be explained by an electron cloud distortion effect that is driven by the existence of two glass formers with contrasting polarizability. High numerical apertur…
Direct investigation of ion-induced dynamics in matter on picosecond (ps, 10-12 s) timescales has been precluded to date by the relatively long nanosecond (ns, 10-9 s) scale ion pulses typically provided by radiofrequency accelerators1. By contrast, laser-driven ion accelerators provide bursts of ps duration2, but have yet to be applied to the study of ultrafast ion-induced transients in matter. We report on the evolution of an electron-hole plasma excited in borosilicate glass by such bursts. This is observed as an onset of opacity to synchronised optical probe radiation and is characterised …
We report on a single-step, biomimetic approach for the realization of omnidirectional transparent antireflective glass. In particular, it is shown that circularly polarized ultrashort laser pulses produce self-organized nanopillar structures on fused silica (SiO2). The laser induced nanostructures are selectively textured on the glass surface in order to mimic the spatial randomness, pillar-like morphology, as well as the remarkable anti-reflection properties found on the wings of the glasswing butterfly, Greta oto[1] and various Cicada species[2]. The artificial structures exhibit impressive…
We demonstrated fabrication of waveguide and directional coupler in bulk glass-ceramics Zerodur, through femtosecond laser direct-writing. Waveguide propagation loss of no more than 1.5 dB/cm was achieved. We expect this will lead to the deployment of Zerodur integrated photonics in fields like space-borne astronomy, quantum technology and fundamental physics, for both economic and technical benefits.
We present a simple and robust technique to retrieve the phase of ultrashort laser pulses, based on a chirped mirror and glass wedges compressor. It uses the compression system itself as a diagnostic tool, thereby making unnecessary the use of complementary diagnostic tools. We used this technique to compress and characterize 7.1 fs laser pulses from an ultrafast laser oscillator.
Formation of femtosecond laser direct-written positive refractive index waveguides in Gallium Lanthanum Sulphide (GLS) glass is explained for the first time. Evidence of structural changes and ion migration are presented using Raman spectroscopy and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), respectively. 2-D Raman spectra maps reveal a peak shift and full-width at half maximum variations in the symmetric vibrations of GaS4 main band. For the first time, the 2D map of the boson band was successfully used to identify and understand the material densification profile in a high refractive index glass w…
The authors describe the fabrication of buried waveguides in a highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass, gallium lanthanum sulfide, using focused femtosecond laser pulses. Through optical characterization of the waveguides, they have proposed a formation mechanism and provide comparisons to previous work. Tunneling has been identified as the dominant nonlinear absorption mechanism in the formation of the waveguides. Single mode guidance at 633 nm has been demonstrated. The writing parameters for the minimum propagation loss of 1.47 dB/cm are 0.36 uJ pulse energy and 50 um/s scanning speed.
Satellite-based quantum technologies represent a possible route for extending the achievable range of quantum communication, allowing the construction of worldwide quantum networks without quantum repeaters. In space missions, however, the volume available for the instrumentation is limited, and footprint is a crucial specification of the devices that can be employed. Integrated optics could be highly beneficial in this sense, as it allows for the miniaturization of different functionalities in small and monolithic photonic circuits. In this work, we report on the qualification of waveguides f…
Low loss, optical channel waveguides have been successfully produced by high repetition rate, femtosecond laser inscription in a Li-Zn fluoroborate glass (64.9B2O3 + 25Li2O + 10ZnF2 + 0.1Er2O3). High quality waveguides were produced at 500 kHz, 1 MHz and 2 MHz laser repetition rates, showing a refractive index contrast in the range of 3-6 x 10-3 depending on various fluences. Dependence of experimental parameters such as average laser power, pulse repetition rate and writing speed on the properties of fabricated waveguides has been discussed. The comparison of optical and compositional charact…
We use ultrafast pump-probe transmission spectroscopy to measure the electronic relaxation time for electrons in cobalt nanoparticles embedded on glass substrate using femtosecond laser pulses. We found that the plasmon excitation is inhomogenously broadening with a fast excitation time of 23 fs. and a plasmonic relaxation time of 97fs. The femtosecond laser pulses used in this experiment were come from a Ti:Sapphire resonator that uses a self-mode-locking mechanism based on the nonlinear Kerr effect. The pulses were found to have repetition rate of 103.52MHz with a pulse width of 64.5 fs at F…
We report mode-locked ~1550 nm output of transform-limited ~180 fs pulses from a large mode-area (diameter ~ 50 μm) guided-wave erbium fluorozirconate glass laser. The passively mode-locked oscillator generates pulses with 25 nm bandwidth at 156 MHz repetition rate and peak-power of 260 W. Scalability to higher repetition rate is demonstrated by transform-limited 410 fs pulse output at 1.3 GHz. To understand the origins of the broad spectral output, the laser cavity is simulated by using a numerical solution to the Ginzburg-Landau equation. This paper reports the widest bandwidth and shortest …
We report on femtosecond laser writing of single mode optical waveguides in chalcogenide Gallium Lanthanum Sulphide (GLS) glass. A multiscan fabrication process was employed to create waveguides with symmetric single mode guidance and low insertion losses at 800 nm wavelength, compatible with Ti:Sapphire ultrafast lasers. μRaman and X-Ray microanalysis were used to elucidate the origin of the laser-induced refractive index change in GLS. Nonlinear refractive index measurements of the waveguides were performed by finding the optical switching parameters of a directional coupler, demonstrating t…
Quill effect, one of the intriguing phenomena in ultrafast laser writing, to our knowledge, has not been studied in low-loss-waveguide (LLW) writing regime yet, probably due to its invisibility under conventional white-light microscope in that regime. In this report, with help of adaptive third harmonic generation microscopy we reveal the quill effect in LLW writing regime and study its influences on the properties of written photonic integrated components in term of polarization-related properties in fused silica and beam-splitting ratio of three-waveguide-coupler in borosilicate glass.
Irradiation of intense ultrafast laser pulses in glasses can lead to formation of nanogratings whose periods are significantly smaller than the incident irradiation wavelength. The mechanism of the exotic phenomenon is still under debate. Here, we access the snapshots of morphologies in the laser affected regions in a porous glass which reveal the evolution of the formation of nanogratings with increasing number of laser pulses. Combined with further theoretical analyses, our observation provides important clues which suggest that excitation of standing plasma waves at the interfaces between a…
Light plays the central role in many applications. The key to unlocking its versatility lies in shaping it into the most appropriate form for the task at hand. Specifically tailored refractive index modifications, directly manufactured inside glass using a short pulsed laser, enable an almost arbitrary control of the light flow. However, the stringent requirements for quantitative knowledge of these modifications, as well as for fabrication precision, have so far prevented the fabrication of light-efficient aperiodic photonic volume elements (APVEs). Here we present a powerful approach to the …
Ultrafast lasers are ideal tools to process transparent materials because they spatially confine the deposition of laser energy within the material's bulk via nonlinear photoionization processes. Nonlinear propagation and filamentation were initially regarded as deleterious effects. But in the last decade, they turned out to be benefits to control energy deposition over long distances. These effects create very high aspect ratio structures which have found a number of important applications, particularly for glass separation with non-ablative techniques. This chapter reviews the developments o…
We report the ultrafast laser fabrication and mid-IR characterization (3.39 microns) of four-port evanescent field directional couplers. The couplers were fabricated in a commercial gallium lanthanum sulphide glass substrate using sub-picosecond laser pulses of 1030 nm light. Straight waveguides inscribed using optimal fabrication parameters were found to exhibit propagation losses of 0.8 dB/cm. A series of couplers were inscribed with different interaction lengths, and we demonstrate power splitting ratios of between 8% and 99% for mid-IR light with a wavelength of 3.39 microns. These results…
Reconfigurability of integrated photonic chips plays a key role in current experiments in the area of linear-optical quantum computing. We demonstrate a reconfigurable multiport interferometer implemented as a femtosecond laser-written integrated photonic device. The device includes a femtosecond laser-written $4\times 4$ multiport interferometer equipped with 12 thermooptical phase shifters, making it a universal programmable linear-optical circuit. We achieve a record fast switching time for a single nested Mach-Zender interferometer of $\sim10$ ms and quantitatively analyse the reconfigurab…
We report the fabrication and performance of the first C-band directly-written monolithic waveguide-laser. The waveguide-laser device was created in an Erbium and Ytterbium doped phosphate glass host and consisted of an optical waveguide that included a distributed feedback Bragg grating structure. The femtosecond laser direct-write technique was used to create both the waveguide and the waveguide-Bragg grating simultaneously and in a single processing step. The waveguide-laser was optically pumped at approximately 980 nm and lased at 1537nm with a bandwidth of less than 4 pm.
Ultrafast lasers have revolutionized material processing, opening a wealth of new applications in many areas of science. A recent technology that allows the cleaving of transparent materials via non-ablative processes is based on focusing and translating a high-intensity laser beam within a material to induce a well-defined internal stress plane. This then enables material separation without debris generation. Here, we use a non-diffracting beam engineered to have a transverse elliptical spatial profile to generate high aspect ratio elliptical channels in glass of dimension 350 nm x 710 nm, an…
Ultrafast lasers ($< 500$ fs) have enabled laser-matter interactions at intensities exceeding $10^{18} \rm{Wcm}^{-2}$ with only millijoules of laser energy. However, as pulse durations become shorter, larger spectral bandwidths are required. Increasing the bandwidth causes the temporal structure to be increasingly sensitive to spectral phase, yet measuring the spectral phase of a laser pulse is nontrivial. While direct measurements of the spectral phase cannot be done using square-integrable detectors, phase information can be reconstructed by measuring the spectral response of a nonlinear opt…
Third harmonic generation microscopy has been used to analyze the morphology of photonic structures created using the femtosecond laser direct-write technique. Three dimensional waveguide arrays and waveguide-Bragg gratings written in fused-silica and doped phosphate glass were investigated. A sensorless adaptive optical system was used to correct the optical aberrations occurring in the sample and microscope system, which had a lateral resolution of less than 500 nm. This non-destructive testing method creates volume reconstructions of photonic devices and reveals details invisible to other l…
We propose an efficient method to determine the effective refractive index of step-index optical fibers from the visible to the mid-IR and thus allowing to infer their dispersive properties over a broad spectral range. The validity of the method, based on the writing of an array of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with known periods using the fs scanning phase mask technique, is first confirmed with a standard silica fiber, then applied to various fluoride glass fibers to determine their effective refractive index and dispersion over more than three octaves, i.e. from 550 to 4800 nm.
We present quantitative ultrafast interferometric pump-probe microscopy capable of tracking of photoexcitations with sub 10 nm spatial precision in three dimensions with 15 fs temporal resolution, through retrieval of the full transient photoinduced complex refractive index. We use this methodology to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of the quantum coherent photophysical process of ultrafast singlet exciton fission. Measurements on microcrystalline pentacene films grown on glass (SiO$_2$) and boron nitride (hBN) reveal a 25 nm, 70 fs expansion of the joint-density-of-states along the crystal …
Ultrafast laser inscription (ULI) is a rapidly maturing technique which uses focused ultrashort laser pulses to locally modify the refractive index of dielectric materials in three-dimensions (3D). Recently, ULI has been applied to the fabrication of astrophotonic devices such as integrated beam combiners, 3D integrated waveguide fan-outs and multimode-to-single mode convertors (photonic lanterns). Here, we outline our work on applying ULI to the fabrication of volume phase gratings (VPGs) in fused silica and gallium lanthanum sulphide (GLS) glasses. The VPGs we fabricated had a spatial freque…
We report photonic quantum circuits created using an ultrafast laser processing technique that is rapid, requires no lithographic mask and can be used to create three-dimensional networks of waveguide devices. We have characterized directional couplers--the key functional elements of photonic quantum circuits--and found that they perform as well as lithographically produced waveguide devices. We further demonstrate high-performance interferometers and an important multi-photon quantum interference phenomenon for the first time in integrated optics. This direct-write approach will enable the ra…
The efficient excitation of quantum sources such as quantum dots or single molecules requires high NA optics which is often a challenge in cryogenics, or in ultrafast optics. Here we propose a 3.2 um wide parabolic mirror, with a 0.8 um focal length, fabricated by direct laser writing on CdSe/CdS colloidal quantum dots, capable of focusing the excitation light to a sub-wavelength spot and to extract the generated emission by collimating it into a narrow beam. This mirror is fabricated via in-situ volumetric optical lithography, which can be aligned to individual emitters, and it can be easily …
Electrodes with higher transparency that can also align liquid crystals (LCs) are of high importance for improved costs and energy consumption of LC displays. Here we demonstrate for the first time alignment of liquid crystals on femtosecond laser nanostructured indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass exhibiting also higher transparency due to the less interface reflections. The nano paterns were created by fs laser directlly on ITO films without any additional spin coating materials or lithography procces. Nine regions of laser-induced nanostructures were fabricated with different alignment orien…
A femtosecond laser-written monolithic waveguide laser (WGL) oscillator based on a distributed feedback (DFB) architecture and fabricated in ytterbium doped phosphate glass is reported. The device lased at 1033 nm with an output power of 102 mW and a bandwidth less than 2 pm when bidirectionally pumped at 976 nm. The WGL device was stable and operated for 50 hours without degradation. This demonstration of a high performance WGL opens the possibility for creating a variety of narrow-linewidth laser designs in bulk glasses.
We investigate selective patterning of ultra-thin 20 nm Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) thin films on glass substrates, using 343, 515, and 1030 nm femtosecond (fs), and 1030 nm picoseconds (ps) laser pulses. An ablative removal mechanism is observed for all wavelengths at both femtosecond and picoseconds time-scales. The absorbed threshold fluence values were determined to be 12.5 mJ/cm2 at 343 nm, 9.68 mJ/cm2 at 515 nm, and 7.50 mJ/cm2 at 1030 nm for femtosecond and 9.14 mJ/cm2 at 1030 nm for picosecond laser exposure. Surface analysis of ablated craters using atomic force microscopy confirms that th…
We demonstrate a monolithically integrable heralded photon source in a femtosecond laser direct written glass waveguide. The generation of photon pairs with a wide wavelength separation requires a concomitant large birefringence in the normal dispersion regime. Here, by incorporation of side-stress tracks, we produce a waveguide with a birefringence of $1.64\times~10^{-4}$ and propagation loss as low as 0.21 dB/cm near 980~nm. We measure photon pairs with 300~nm wavelength separation at an internal generation rate exceeding $5.05\times10^6$/s. The second order correlations indicate that the ge…
Ion migration in high repetition rate femtosecond laser inscribed waveguides is currently being reported in different optical glasses. For the first time we discuss and experimentally demonstrate the presence of two regimes of ion migration found in laser written waveguides. Regime-I, corresponds to the initial waveguide formation mainly via light element migration (in our case atomic weight < 31u), whereas regime-II majorly corresponds to the movement of heavy elements. This behavior brings attention to a problem which has never been analyzed before and that affects laser written active waveg…
Nanotechnology and the consequent emergence of miniaturized devices are driving the need to improve our understanding of the mechanical properties of a myriad of materials. Here we focus on amorphous polymeric materials and introduce a new way to determine the nanoscale mechanical response of polymeric thin films in the GHz range, using ultrafast optical means. Coupling of the films to plasmonic nanoantennas excited at their vibrational eigenfrequencies allows the extraction of the values of the mechanical moduli as well as the estimation of the glass transition temperature via time-domain mea…
A fully integrated quantum optical technology requires active quantum systems incorporated into resonant optical microstructures and inter-connected in three dimensions via photonic wires. Nitrogen vacancy-centres (NV-centres) in diamond which are excellent photostable room temperature single-photon emitters are ideal candidates for that purpose. Extensive research efforts to couple NV-centres to photonic structures such as optical microresonators, microcavities, and waveguides have been pursued. Strategies for integration range from top-down fabrication via etching of diamond membranes to sop…
The importance of integrated quantum photonics in the telecom band resides on the possibility of interfacing with the optical network infrastructure developed for classical communications. In this framework, femtosecond laser written integrated photonic circuits, already assessed for quantum information experiments in the 800 nm wavelength range, have great potentials. In fact these circuits, written in glass, can be perfectly mode-matched at telecom wavelength to the in/out coupling fibers, which is a key requirement for a low-loss processing node in future quantum optical networks. In additi…
