Ultrafast lasers ($< 500$ fs) have enabled laser-matter interactions at intensities exceeding $10^{18} \rm{Wcm}^{-2}$ with only millijoules of laser energy. However, as pulse durations become shorter, larger spectral bandwidths are required. Increasing the bandwidth causes the temporal structure to be increasingly sensitive to spectral phase, yet measuring the spectral phase of a laser pulse is nontrivial. While direct measurements of the spectral phase cannot be done using square-integrable detectors, phase information can be reconstructed by measuring the spectral response of a nonlinear optical effect. We introduce a new deep learning approach using the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and self-phase modulation, a $χ_3$ nonlinearity occurring from material propagation. By training a neural network on numerical simulations of pulses propagating in a known material, the features of spectral change can be use to reconstruct the spectral phase. The technique is also sensitive to the local fluence of the pulse, enabling the full temporal intensity profile to be calculated. We demonstrate our method on a simulated large bandwidth pulse undergoing moderate material dispersion, and an experimentally produced broadband spectrum with substantial material dispersion. Error rates are low, even when modest amounts of noise introduced. With a single plate of glass and an optical spectrometer, single shot phase and fluence measurements are possible in real-time on intense ultrafast laser systems.
It has been recently shown that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) and temporal degrees of freedom in ultrafast (few-cycle) vortices are coupled. This coupling manifests itself with different effects in different parts of the vortex, as has been shown for the ring surrounding the vortex where the pulse energy is maximum, and also in the immediate vicinity of the vortex center. In may applications, however, the ring of maximum energy is not of primary interest, but that where the pulse peak intensity is maximum, which is particularly true in nonlinear optics applications such as the experiments…
Black phosphorus has been recently rediscovered as a new and interesting two-dimensional material due to its unique electronic and optical properties. Here, we study the linear and nonlinear optical properties of black phosphorus thin films, indicating that both linear and nonlinear optical properties are anisotropic and can be tuned by the film thickness. Then we employ the nonlinear optical property of black phosphorus for ultrafast (pulse duration down to ~786 fs in mode-locking) and large-energy (pulse energy up to >18 nJ in Q-switching) pulse generation in fiber lasers at the near-infrare…
We introduce a new method for performing ultrafast imaging and tracking of surface plasmon wave packets that propagate on metal films. We demonstrate the efficiency of leakage radiation microscopy implemented in the time domain for measuring both group and phase velocities of near-field pulses with a high level of precision. The versatility of our far-field imaging method is particularly appealing in the context of ultrafast near-field optics.
Terahertz (THz)-based electron manipulation has recently been shown to hold tremendous promise as a technology for manipulating and driving the next-generation of compact ultrafast electron sources. Here, we demonstrate an ultrafast electron diffractometer with THz-driven pulse compression. The electron bunches from a conventional DC gun are compressed by a factor of 10 and reach a duration of ~180 fs (FWHM) with 10,000 electrons/pulse at a 1 kHz repetition rate. The resulting ultrafast electron source is used in a proof-of-principle experiment to probe the photoinduced dynamics of single-crys…
Deep ultraviolet (DUV) laser pulses with tuneable wavelength and very short duration are a key enabling technology for next-generation technology and ultrafast science. Their generation has been the subject of extensive experimental effort, but no technique demonstrated thus far has been able to meet all requirements in one light source. Here we demonstrate a bright, efficient, and compact source of tuneable deep ultraviolet ultrafast laser pulses based on resonant dispersive wave emission in hollow capillary fibre. In a total footprint of only 120 x 75 cm, including the ytterbium-based drive …
Characterizing ultrashort optical pulses has always been a critical but difficult task, which has a broad range of applications. We propose and demonstrate a self-referenced method of characterizing ultrafast pulses with a multimode fiber. The linear and nonlinear speckle patterns formed at the distal end of a multimode fiber are used to recover the spectral amplitude and phase of an unknown pulse. We deploy a deep learning algorithm for phase recovery. The diversity of spatial and spectral modes in a multimode fiber removes any ambiguity in the sign of the recovered spectral phase. Our techni…
We demonstrate a new ultrafast pulse reconstruction modality which is somewhat reminiscent of frequency resolved optical gating but uses a modified setup and a conceptually different reconstruction algorithm that is derived from ptychography. Even though it is a second order correlation scheme it shows no time ambiguity. Moreover, the number of spectra to record is considerably smaller than in most other related schemes which, together with a robust algorithm, leads to extremely fast convergence of the reconstruction.
Optically generated electron-hole plasma in high-index dielectric nanostructures was demonstrated as a means of tuning of their optical properties. However, until now an ultrafast operation regime of such plasma driven nanostructures has not been attained. Here, we perform pump-probe experiments with resonant silicon nanoparticles and report on dense optical plasma generation near the magnetic dipole resonance with ultrafast (about 2.5 ps) relaxation rate. Basing on experimental results, we develop an analytical model describing transient response of a nanocrystalline silicon nanoparticle to a…
Gas-filled hollow-core fibres are a flexible platform for the manipulation of ultrafast laser pulses through a variety of nonlinear optical effects. Efficient high-fidelity coupling of the initial pulses is very important for system performance. Here we study the effect of self-focusing in gas-cell windows on the coupling of ultrafast laser pulses into hollow-core fibres using (2+1)-dimensional numerical simulations. As expected, we find that the coupling efficiency is degraded and the duration of the coupled pulses changed when the entrance window is too close to the fibre entrance. The inter…

Excellent beam quality and low noise performance are confirmed. The laser has proven suitable for demanding scientific applications. Further power scaling is possible right away using even more amplifier channels
The principle of optical trapping is conventionally based on the interaction of optical fields with linear induced polarizations. However, the optical force originating from the nonlinear polarization becomes significant when nonlinear optical nanoparticles are trapped by ultrafast laser pulses. Herein we establish the time-averaged optical forces on a nonlinear optical nanoparticle using high-repetition-rate ultrafast laser pulses, based on the linear and nonlinear polarization effects. We investigate the dependence of the optical forces on the magnitudes and signs of the refractive nonlinear…
Here we investigate the use of passive intracavity optical filters for controlling the laser output spectrum of a polarization-mode-locked, ultrafast Ytterbium fiber laser. With strategic placement of the filter cutoff frequency, the overall lasing bandwidth can be increased or extended. Overall laser performance, including pulse compression and intensity noise, is investigated for both shortpass and longpass filters with a range of cutoff frequencies, tuned by rotating the filters. We demonstrate the use of an intracavity filter not only shapes the output spectra, it provides a route for over…
Ultrafast lasers generating high repetition rate ultrashort pulses through various mode-locking methods can benefit many important applications including communication, materials processing, astronomical observation, etc. For decades, mode-locking based on dissipative four-wave-mixing (DFWM) has been fundamental in producing pulses with repetition rates on the order of gigahertz (GHz), where multiwavelength comb filters and long nonlinear components are elemental. Recently, this method has been improved using filter-driven DFWM, which exploits both the filtering and nonlinear features of silic…
We report mode-locked ~1550 nm output of transform-limited ~180 fs pulses from a large mode-area (diameter ~ 50 μm) guided-wave erbium fluorozirconate glass laser. The passively mode-locked oscillator generates pulses with 25 nm bandwidth at 156 MHz repetition rate and peak-power of 260 W. Scalability to higher repetition rate is demonstrated by transform-limited 410 fs pulse output at 1.3 GHz. To understand the origins of the broad spectral output, the laser cavity is simulated by using a numerical solution to the Ginzburg-Landau equation. This paper reports the widest bandwidth and shortest …
We experimentally demonstrate the efficient generation of circularly polarized pulses tunable from the vacuum to deep ultraviolet (160-380 nm) through resonant dispersive wave emission from optical solitons in a gas-filled hollow capillary fiber. In the deep ultraviolet we measure up to 13 microjoule of pulse energy, and from numerical simulations, we estimate the shortest output pulse duration to be 8.5 fs. We also experimentally verify that simply scaling the pulse energy by 3/2 between linearly and circularly polarized pumping closely reproduces the soliton and dispersive wave dynamics. Bas…
Short-pulse fibre lasers are a complex dynamical system possessing a broad space of operating states that can be accessed through control of cavity parameters. Determination of target regimes is a multi-parameter global optimisation problem. Here, we report the implementation of a genetic algorithm to intelligently locate optimum parameters for stable single-pulse mode-locking in a Figure-8 fibre laser, and fully automate the system turn-on procedure. Stable ultrashort pulses are repeatably achieved by employing a compound fitness function that monitors both temporal and spectral output proper…
Intense few cycle terahertz pulses exhibit complex non-linear behavior under interaction with heavily n-doped Si. Fast increase in the transmission of a 700 fs pulse (central frequency 1.5 THz) through the Si sample (low field transmission of 0:02 %) saturates at 8 % for the external field of 5 MV/cm and then drops twofold at 20 MV/cm. An electro-optical sampling measurements revealed formation of a single cycle terahertz pulse at this field due to formation of a thin ionized layer by the first intense oscillation of the terahertz field.
We present a quantitative comparison between the high-pressure fuel spray images obtained experimentally using classical imaging with coherent and incoherent ultrafast illuminations recorded using a compatible CMOS camera. The ultrafast, incoherent illumination source was extracted from the supercontinuum generated by tightly focusing the femtosecond laser pulses in water. The average velocity maps computed using time-correlated image-pairs and spray edge complexity computed using the average curvature scale space maps are compared for the spray images obtained with the two illumination techni…
Frequency to time mapping is a powerful technique for observing ultrafast phenomena and non-repetitive events in optics. However, many optical sources operate in wavelength regions, or at power levels, that are not compatible with standard frequency to time mapping implementations. The recently developed free-space angular chirp enhanced delay (FACED) removes many of these limitations, and offers a linear frequency to time mapping in any wavelength region where high-reflectivity mirrors and diffractive optics are available. In this work, we present a detailed formulation of the optical transfe…
We investigate the spectral degree of freedom of OAM-carrying localized waves, and its influence on their transverse intensity distribution. In particular, we focus our attention on two different families of spectra, namely exponentially decaying spectra, which are very tightly connected to fundamental X-waves, and Bessel-modulated spectra. For each class we show how it is possible, by suitable manipulating their spectrum, to structure their transverse intensity distribution, thus creating a radial structure similar to that of Laguerre-Gaussian beams. To complete our analysis, we investigate t…
We have developed a single-shot imaging technique that can capture ultrafast events occurring on femtosecond to picosecond time scales. The technique is based on an optical pump-probe method, in which multiple time-delayed femtosecond pulses simultaneously probe a pump-excited sample. Here we use two sets of 2-by-2 mirror arrays for spatial/temporal division and routing of multiple probe pulses. This single-shot scheme is successfully applied to capture femtosecond ionization fronts propagating at the speed of light in air, as well as laser-induced ablation of solid targets.
Pulse train instabilities have often given rise to confusion in misinterpretation in ultrafast pulse characterization measurements. Most prominently known as the coherent artifact, a partially mode-locked laser with non-periodic waveform may still produce an autocorrelation that has often been misinterpreted as indication for a coherent pulse train. Some modern pulse characterization methods easily miss the presence of a coherent artifact, too. Here we address the particularly difficult situation of a pulse train with chirp-only instability. This instability is shown to be virtually invisible …
We have successfully functionalized 5 layers of TCVD-grown graphene by photoassisted transfer hydrogenation reaction with formic acid, in order to increase its nonlinear optical response and laser-induced damage resilience. Using the functionalized graphene samples, we were able to fully characterize sub-10 fs ultrashort laser pulses using THG dispersion-scan, with results that are in excellent agreement with the ones obtained with pristine graphene samples.
Ultrafast laser pulses spatially shaped as Bessel beams in dielectrics create high aspect ratio plasma channels whose relaxation can lead to the formation of nanochannels. We report a strong enhancement of the nanochannel drilling efficiency with illumination by double pulses separated by a delay between 10 to 500 ps. This enables the formation of nanochannels with diameters down to 100 nm. Experimental absorption measurements demonstrate that the increase of drilling efficiency is due to an increase of the confinement of the energy deposition. Nanochannel formation corresponds to a drastic ch…
Sources of intense, ultra-short electromagnetic pulses enable applications such as attosecond pulse generation, control of electron motion in solids and the observation of reaction dynamics at the electronic level. For such applications both high-intensity and carrier envelope phase~(CEP) tunability are beneficial, yet hard to obtain with current methods. In this work we present a new scheme for generation of isolated CEP-tunable intense sub-cycle pulses with central frequencies that range from the midinfrared to the ultraviolet. It utilizes an intense laser pulse which drives a wake in a plas…
Dynamical materials that capable of responding to optical stimuli have always been pursued for designing novel photonic devices and functionalities, of which the response speed and amplitude as well as integration adaptability and energy effectiveness are especially critical. Here we show ultrafast pulse generation by exploiting the ultrafast and sensitive nonlinear dynamical processes in tunably solution-processed colloidal epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) transparent conducting oxide (TCO) nanocrystals (NCs), of which the potential respond response speed is >2 THz and modulation depth is ~23% pumped …
We demonstrate quantum entanglement of two trapped atomic ion qubits using a sequence of ultrafast laser pulses. Unlike previous demonstrations of entanglement mediated by the Coulomb interaction, this scheme does not require confinement to the Lamb-Dicke regime and can be less sensitive to ambient noise due to its speed. To elucidate the physics of an ultrafast phase gate, we generate a high entanglement rate using just 10 pulses, each of $\sim20$ ps duration, and demonstrate an entangled Bell-state with $(76\pm1)$% fidelity. These results pave the way for entanglement operations within a lar…

Ionization is a fundamental process in intense laser-matter interactions, and is known to cause plasma defocusing and intensity clamping. Here, we investigate theoretically the propagation dynamics of an intense laser pulse in a helium gas jet in the ionization saturation regime, and we find that the pulse undergoes self-focusing and self-compression through ionization-induced reshaping, resulting in a manyfold increase in the laser intensity. This unconventional behavior is associated with the spatiotemporal frequency variation mediated by ionization and spatiotempral coupling. Our results il…
Ultrafast nonlinear photonics enables a host of applications in advanced on-chip spectroscopy and information processing. These rely on a strong intensity dependent (nonlinear) refractive index capable of modulating optical pulses on sub-picosecond timescales and on length scales suitable for integrated photonics. Currently there is no platform that can provide this for the UV spectral range where broadband spectra generated by nonlinear modulation can pave the way to new on-chip ultrafast (bio-) chemical spectroscopy devices. We demonstrate the giant nonlinearity of UV hybrid light-matter sta…
We have developed low-dispersion (1480 l/mm), resonance-free, diffraction gratings made of dielectric materials resistant to femtosecond laser damage $(SiO_{2}/HfO_{2})$. A 14 cm diameter sample was fabricated resulting in a mean diffraction efficiency of 99.1% at λ = 810 nm with 0.4% uniformity using equipment which can fabricate gratings up to 1m diagonal. The implementation of these gratings in the compression of 30 fs pulses in an out-of-plane geometry can result in compressor efficiencies of ~95%. The measured laser absorption is 500x lower than current ultrafast petawatt-class compressor…
