The equations of motion of charged particles under the influence of short electromagnetic pulses are investigated. The subcycle regime is considered, and the delta function approximation is applied. The effects of the self force are also considered, and the threshold where radiation becomes important is discussed. A dimensionless parameter is defined that signals the onset of radiation reaction effects.
Direct generation of ultrashort, transform-limited pulses in a laser resonator is observed theoretically and experimentally. This constitutes a new type of ultrashort pulse generation in mode-locked lasers: in contrast to the well-known solitons (hyperbolic secant like), dispersion-managed solitons (Gaussian-like), and parabolic pulses plus external compression, ultrashort pulse solutions to the nonlinear wave equations that describe pulse evolution in the laser cavity are observed. Stable ultrashort, transform-limited pulses exist with optical spectrum broader than the gain bandwidth of the a…
A laser source delivering ultrashort pulses (50-100 fs) tunable from 820 nm to 1200 nm has been developed. It is based on the filtering of a continuum in the Fourier plane of a zero dispersion line without a phase compensator. We have also numerically investigated the impact of the residual spectral phase in order to guarantee ultrashort pulses.
Autocorrelation measurement based on second-harmonic generation (SHG), the best-known technique for measuring the temporal duration of ultrashort pulses, could date back to the birth of ultrafast lasers. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate that such well-established technique can also be used to measure the orbital angular momentum of ultrashort Laguerre-Gauss (LG) pulses. By analysing the far-field pattern of the SHG signal, the full spatial structure of ultrashort LG pulses, including both azimuthal and radial indices, are unambiguously determined. Our results provide an importan…
Using SEA TADPOLE, we directly measure the spatio-temporal field of diffracting ultrashort pulses with femtosecond temporal and micrometer spatial resolutions. Using a circular aperture and an opaque disk, we observe boundary wave pulses including their superluminal speeds.
We propose and numerically validate an all-optical scheme to generate a train of optical pulses. Modulation of a continuous wave with a periodic binary temporal phase pattern followed by a spectral phase shaping enables us to obtain ultrashort pulse trains. An ideal step phase profile as well as a profile arisen from a bandwidth-limited device are investigated. Analytical guidelines describing pulse trains formation and their characteristics are provided.
This is a summary directed to PhD students of the research work conducted on the problem of the production of "light bullets", or multidimensional wave packets that propagate without distortion in unbounded, homogeneous, nonlinear media, and on the actual nature of the self-localized light wave packets spontaneously generated in self-focusing experiments with ultrashort pulses.
We measure the detailed spatiotemporal profiles of femtosecond laser pulses in the infrared wavelength range λ=2.5-11μm, and the absolute nonlinear response of major air constituents (N2, O2, and Ar) over this range. The spatiotemporal measurements reveal wavelength-dependent pulse front tilt and temporal stretching in the infrared pulses.
We present a simple and robust technique to retrieve the phase of ultrashort laser pulses, based on a chirped mirror and glass wedges compressor. It uses the compression system itself as a diagnostic tool, thereby making unnecessary the use of complementary diagnostic tools. We used this technique to compress and characterize 7.1 fs laser pulses from an ultrafast laser oscillator.
Using SEA TADPOLE with micrometer-range spatial and femtosecond-range temporal resolution, we report the first direct spatiotemporal measurements of ultrashort Bessel-X pulses. We demonstrate their propagation invariance and superluminal velocity and verify our results with simulations
By using perturbation theory we derive an expression for the electrical field of a Gaussian laser pulse propagating in a gas medium. This expression is used as a trial solution in a variational method to get quasianalytical solutions for the width, intensity and self-focusing distance of ultrashort pulse. The approximation gives an improved agreement with results of numerical simulations for a broad range of values of the input power of the pulse than previous analytical results available in the literature.
By using a reductive perturbation method, we derive from Maxwell-Bloch equations a cubic generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation for ultrashort spatiotemporal optical pulse propagation in cubic (Kerr-like) media without the use of the slowly varying envelope approximation. We calculate the collapse threshold for the propagation of few-cycle spatiotemporal pulses described by the generic cubic generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation by a direct numerical method and compare it to analytic results based on a rigorous virial theorem. Besides, typical evolution of the spectrum (integrated o…
In this article we consider one dimensional model of an ultra short pulse propagation in isotropic dispersionless media taking into account a nonlinearity of the third order. We introduce a method for Maxwell's equations transformation based on a complete set of projecting operators. The operators generally correspond wave dispersion branches. As a simplest result of the method application we derive a system of equations describing dynamics of ultrashort pulses of opposite directions of propagation. We show that in such way the generalized Short Pulse Equations of Shafer and Wayne is obtained …
Analytic expressions for the electromagnetic fields of an ultrashort, tightly focused, linearly polarized laser pulse in vacuum are derived from scalar and vector potentials, using a small parameter which assumes a small bandwidth of the laser pulse. The derived fields are compared with those of the Lax series expansion and the complex-source-point approaches and are shown to be well-behaved and accurate even in the subcycle pulse regime. We further demonstrate that terms stemming from the scalar potential and due to a fast varying pulse envelope are non-negligible and may significantly influe…
We report on the successful operation of an analogue computer designed to factor numbers. Our device relies solely on the interference of classical light and brings together the field of ultrashort laser pulses with number theory. Indeed, the frequency component of the electric field corresponding to a sequence of appropriately shaped femtosecond pulses is determined by a Gauss sum which allows us to find the factors of a number.
We demonstrate a narrow band phase sensitive amplifier in the pump degenerate configuration which employs ps pump pulses. Control of the amplifier bandwidth is achieved via changes of the pump spectral width. A phase sensitive gain between -6 and 6 decibels, with an overall system gain of 28dB was demonstrated.
The magnitude of the topological charge of the vortex of a ring-shaped pulse is found to be limited by the squared mean frequency of the pulse spectrum at the ring relative to its variance. This limitation implies a upper bound to the orbital angular momentum carried by a pulse, and a lower bound to the duration for a pulse to carry any orbital angular momentum.
We demonstrate experimentally that random phase modulation of an erbium-doped fiber ring-laser by an intra-cavity electro-optic phase modulator did not inhibit ultrashort-pulse operation. Stable and self-starting ultrashort-pulse operation with a single pulse circulating in the cavity was achieved even when the phase modulator was driven with random sequences sufficiently fast and strong to render the laser cavity modeless, in the sense that heterodyning of the laser output did not show any spectral lines corresponding to a mode spectrum. No significant change in measured pulse characteristics…
Transparent materials do not absorb light but have profound influence on the phase evolution of transmitted radiation. One consequence is chromatic dispersion, i.e., light of different frequencies travels at different velocities, causing ultrashort laser pulses to elongate in time while propagating. Here we experimentally demonstrate ultrathin nanostructured coatings that resolve this challenge: we tailor the dispersion of silicon nanopillar arrays such that they temporally reshape pulses upon transmission using slow light effects and act as ultrashort laser pulse compressors. The coatings ind…
We predict analytically and confirm with numerical simulations that inter-mode dispersion in nanowire waveguide arrays can be tailored through periodic waveguide bending, facilitating flexible spatio-temporal reshaping without break-up of femtosecond pulses. This approach allows simulta- neous and independent control of temporal dispersion and spatial diffraction that are often strongly connected in nanophotonic structures.
We present a retrieval algorithm based on generalized projections for ultrashort pulse characterization using dispersion scan (d-scan). The new algorithm is tested on several simulated cases and in two different experimental cases in the few-cycle regime. The proposed algorithm is much faster and leads to a drastic reduction of retrieval times, but performs less robust in the retrieval of noisy d-scan traces compared to the standard algorithm.
We proposed remote spectroscopy approach consisted in luminescence light utilization. During interaction with different targets ultrashort UV laser pulse generates broadband spectrum light, which can be applied for remote spectroscopy purposes. We selected appropriate target materials to cover required spectral range from 300 to 600 nm and provided an example of spectrum reconstruction of known material. Obtained spectra are in a good correlation with calculated ones.
The precise observation of the angle-frequency spectrum of light filaments in water reveals a scenario incompatible with current models of conical emission (CE). Its description in terms of linear X-wave modes leads us to understand filamentation dynamics requiring a phase- and group-matched, Kerr-driven four-wave-mixing process that involves two highly localized pumps and two X-waves. CE and temporal splitting arise naturally as two manifestations of this process.
Using numerical simulations, we study propagation of ultrashort light pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium. There are two main issues in our study. The first one concerns the transient process of self-induced transparency soliton formation, in particular, the compression of the pulse which seems to be more effective in the case of homogeneous broadening. The second question deals with the collisions of counter-propagating solitons. It is shown that the level of inhomogeneous broadening has a substantial effect on the elasticity of such collisions.
We present a novel extraction algorithm for spectral phase interferometry for direct field reconstruction (SPIDER) for the so-called X-SPIDER configuration. Our approach largely extends the measurable time windows of pulses without requiring any modification to the experimental X-SPIDER set-up.
We analytically and numerically investigate the propagation of ultrashort tightly focused laser pulses in vacuum, with particular emphasis on Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian modes. We revisit the Lax series approach for forward-propagating linearly-polarized laser pulses, in order to obtain Maxwell-consistent and symmetry-preserving analytical solutions for the propagation of all field components beyond the paraxial approximation in four-dimensional geometry (space and time). We demonstrate that our solution conserves the energy, which is set by the paraxial-level term of the series. Th…
Ultrashort laser pulses are described having chromatic astigmatism, where the astigmatic phase varies linearly with the offset from the central frequency. Such a spatio-temporal coupling not only induces interesting space-frequency and space-time effects, but it removes cylindrical symmetry. We analyze the quantitative effects on the spatio-temporal pulse structure on the collimated beam and as it propagates through a focus, with both the fundamental Gaussian beam and Laguerre-Gaussian beams. Chromatic astigmatism is a new type of spatio-temporal coupling towards arbitrary higher complexity be…
Using femtosecond laser machining, we have fabricated photonic bandgap materials that influence propagation of phonon-polaritons in ferroelectric crystals. Broadband polaritons were generated with impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) using an ultrashort laser pulse, and the spatial and temporal evolution of the polaritons were imaged as they propagated through the fabricated structures with polariton real-space imaging. These techniques offer a new approach to optical materials design.
Generation of few-cycle optical vortex pulses is challenging due to the large spectral bandwidths, as most vortex generation techniques are designed for monochromatic light. In this work, we use a spiral phase plate to generate few-cycle optical vortices from an ultrafast titanium:sapphire oscillator, and characterize them in the spatiotemporal domain using a recently introduced technique based on spatially resolved Fourier transform spectrometry. The performance of this simple approach to the generation of optical vortices is analyzed from a wavelength dependent perspective, as well as in the…
Optical rectification of ultrashort laser pulses in LiNbO3 by tilted-pulse-front excitation is a powerful way to generate near single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses. Motivated by various applications, calculations were carried out to optimize the THz peak electric field strength. The results predict THz output with peak electric field strength on the MV/cm level in the 0.3-1.5 THz frequency range by using optimal pump pulse duration of about 500 fs, optimal crystal length, and cryogenic temperatures for reducing THz absorption in LiNbO3. The THz electric field strength can be increased further t…
The dispersion scan (d-scan) technique has emerged as a simple-to-implement characterization method for ultrashort laser pulses. D-scan traces are intuitive to interpret and retrieval algorithms that are both fast and robust have been developed to obtain the spectral phase and the temporal pulse profile. Here, we give a review of the d-scan technique based on second harmonic generation. We describe and compare recent implementations for the characterization of few- and multi-cycle pulses as well as two different approaches for recording d-scan traces in single-shot, thus showing the versatilit…
Due to their broad spectral width, ultrashort lasers provide new possibilities to shape light beams and control their properties, in particular through the use of spatio-temporal couplings. In this context, we present a theoretical investigation of the linear propagation of ultrashort laser beams that combine temporal chirp and a standard aberration known as longitudinal chromatism. When such beams are focused in a vacuum, or in a linear medium, the interplay of these two effects can be exploited to set the velocity of the resulting intensity peak to arbitrary values within the Rayleigh length…
We report a new version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER), which enables consistency checking through the simultaneous acquisition of multiple shears and offers a simple and precise calibration method. By mixing the test pulse with two spatially chirped ancilla fields we generate a single-shot interferogram which contains multiple shears, the spectral amplitude of the test pulse, and the reference phase, which is accurate for broadband pulses. All calibration parameters - shear, upconversion-frequency and reference phase position - can be accura…
We examine properties of an ultrashort laser pulse propagating through an artificial Saturable Absorber based on Nonlinear Polarization Evolution device which has been realized with Polarization Maintaining fibers only (PM NPE). We study and compare in-line and Faraday Mirror geometries showing that the latter is immune to errors in the PM NPE construction. Experimental results for the transmission measurements of the PM NPE setup for different input linear polarization angles and various input pulse powers are presented. We show that PM NPE topology is of crucial importance for controlling th…
We introduce a new class of nondiffracting optical pulses possessing orbital angular momentum. By generalizing the X-waves solution of the Maxwell equation, we discover the coupling between angular momentum and the temporal degrees of freedom of ultra-short pulses. The spatial twist of propagation invariant light pulse turns out to be directly related to the number of optical cycles. Our results may trigger the development on novel multi-level classical and quantum transmission channels free of dispersion and diffraction, may also find application in the manipulation of nano-structured objects…
Light scattering in inhomogeneous media induces wavefront distortions which pose an inherent limitation in many optical applications. Examples range from microscopy and nanosurgery to astronomy. In recent years, ongoing efforts have made the correction of spatial distortions possible by wavefront shaping techniques. However, when ultrashort pulses are employed scattering induces temporal distortions which hinder their use in nonlinear processes such as in multiphoton microscopy and quantum control experiments. Here we show that correction of both spatial and temporal distortions can be attaine…
The growing use of ultrashort laser pulses exhibiting time-varying polarization (vector pulses) demands simple and robust characterization techniques capable to perform measurements in a broad range of experimental and environmental conditions. Here we present in-line, single-channel setup based on spectral interferometry to characterize ultrashort vector pulses. The use of a bulk interferometer based on birefringence is key for the stability and sensitivity of the technique, thus being simple and highly robust. The technique is used to measure vector pulses corresponding to polarization gates…
Surface plasmon polariton is collective oscillation of the free electrons at metal dielectric interface. As a wave phenomenon, surface plasmon polaritons can be focused using appropriate excitation geometry of metallic structures. We theoretically demonstrate the possibility of controlling nanoscale short pulse superfocusing based on the generation of radially polarized surface plasmon polariton mode of conical metallic tip. Numerical simulation for femtosecond pulse propagation along a silver nano-needle is discussed. The spatial distribution for a near field strongly depends on a linear chir…
Focusing control of ultrashort pulsed beams is an important research topic, due to its impact to subsequent interaction with matter. In this work, we study the propagation near the focus of ultrashort laser pulses of ~25 fs duration under diffractive focusing. We perform the spatio-spectral and spatio-temporal measurements of their amplitude and phase, complemented by the corresponding simulations. With them, we demonstrate that pulse shaping allows modifying in a controlled way not only the spatio-temporal distribution of the light irradiance in the focal region, but also the way it propagate…
We derive an asymptotically accurate formula for the beam waist of ultrashort, tightly-focused fundamental linearly-polarized, radially-polarized, and azimuthally-polarized modes in free space. We compute the exact beam waist via numerical cubature to ascertain the accuracy with which our formula approximates the exact beam waist over a broad range of parameters of practical interest. Based on this, we describe a method of choosing parameters in the model given the beam waist and pulse duration of a laser pulse.
We have monitored the space-time transformation of 150-fs pulse, undergoing self-focusing and filamentation in water, by means of the nonlinear gating tech- nique. We have observed that pulse splitting and subsequent recombination apply to axial temporal intensity only, whereas space-integrated pulse profile preserves its original shape.
Delivering femtosecond laser light in the focal plane of a high numerical aperture microscope objective is still a challenge, despite significant developments in the generation of ultrashort pulses. One of the most popular techniques, used to correct phase distortions resulting from propagation through transparent media, is the multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS). The accuracy of MIIPS however is limited when higher order phase distortions are present. Here we introduce an improvement, called Gated-MIIPS, which avoids shortcomings of MIIPS, reduces the influence of higher or…
We explored the issues related to the resolution and the modulation extinction when filtering the spectrum of a UV femtosecond laser with a standard ultrashort pulse shaper. We have learned that a higher pulse shaping resolution often requires a larger working beam size or a higher density grating for greater dispersion. However, these approaches also introduce more optical errors and degrade the extinction. In this work, we examined specifics of each component to determine the best configuration of our spectral filtering setup. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we utilized elements availab…
Single strand breaks are induced in DNA plasmids, pBR322 and pUC19, in aqueous media by intense ultrashort laser pulses (820 nm wavelength, 45 fs pulse duration, 1 kHz repetition rate) at intensities of 1-12 TW cm$^{-2}$. The intense laser radiation generates, {\it in situ}, electrons that induce transformation of supercoiled DNA into relaxed DNA. The extent of electron-mediated relaxation of DNA structure is quantified. Introduction of electron and radical scavengers inhibits DNA damage.
We report a simple fiber-implemented technique for complete reconstruction of intensity profile and phase of ultrashort laser pulses based on processing only pulse spectrum and two self-phase modulated spectra measured after a short piece of optical fiber. Its applicability is shown on an example of a fiber optical system in the telecommunication range. A retrieval algorithm in a dispersionless approximation and with considering dispersion effects is developed. The obtained results are confirmed by independent measurements using the second-harmonic generation frequency-resolved optical gating …
We introduce a simple and practical method to create ultrashort intense optical vortices for applications involving high-intensity lasers. Our method utilizes femtosecond laser pulses to laser-etch grating lines into laser-quality gold mirrors. These grating lines holographically encode an optical vortex. We derive mathematical equations for each individual grating line to be etched, for any desired (integer) topological charge. We investigate the smoothness of the etched grooves. We show that they are smooth enough to produce optical vortices with an intensity that is only a few percent lower…
We demonstrate temporal measurements of subpicosecond optical pulses via time-to-frequency conversion in a 45cm long CMOS compatible high index glass spiral waveguide. The measurements are based on efficient four wave mixing in the C-band, using around 1W of peak pump power. We achieve a resolution of 400fs over a time window of 100ps, representing a time-bandwidth product > 250.
In this work we use femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength to excite and characterize the multiphoton luminescence emission of single gold nanoparticles. For excitation with 100 fs laser pulses we observe a two and three photon emission dominated by radiative electron hole pair recombination, while the emission is caused by radiative plasmon decay for excitation with 500 fs pulses. For single gold nanorods with different aspect ratios, we study the interplay between the particle plasmon and electron hole pairs, which enables us to develop a quantitative model to fully describe the two a…
Electromagnetic pulses with tilted pulse fronts are instrumental in enhancing the efficiency of many light-matter interaction processes, with prominent examples including terahertz generation by optical rectification, dielectric laser acceleration, ultrafast electron imaging and X-ray generation from free electron lasers. Here, we find closed-form expressions for tilted-pulse-front pulses that capture their exact propagation dynamics even in deeply nonparaxial and sub-single-cycle regimes. By studying the zero-bandwidth counterparts of these pulses, we further obtain classes of nondiffracting …
We investigate the interplay of diffraction and nonlinear effects during propagation of very short light pulses. Adapting the factorization approach to the problem at hand by keeping the transverse-derivative terms apart from the residual nonlinear contributions we derive an unidirectional propagation equation valid for weak dispersion and reducing to the slowly-evolving-wave-approximation for the case of paraxial rays. Comparison of numerical simulation results for the two equations shows pronounced differences when self-focusing plays important role. We devote special attention to modelling …
The additional degree of freedom as introduced by the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has revolutionized the various technological applications. Optical pulses with OAM have applications in the generation of twisted attosecond pulses, ultrafast spectroscopy, telecommunication, high harmonic generation and in many other areas of physics as well. In this paper, we present a numerical investigation of the propagation dynamics of ultrashort Laguerre Gauss (LG) vortices using nonlinear envelope equation (NEE) in a dispersive and nonlinear medium. Asymmetric splitting of ultrashort LG vortic…
We theoretically study on non-perturbative effective nonlinear responses of metal nanocomposites based on the intrinsic third-order nonlinear response of metal nanoparticles. The large intrinsic third-order nonlinear susceptibility of metal nanoparticles and an irradiation by ultrashort control pulse of light with a sufficiently high peak intensity and moderate fluence can induce a local-field-depression and a saturated plasmon-bleaching in metal nanoparticles. If the control pulse is on, the metal nanocomposites can behave like a dielectric due to the local-field-depression, while if the cont…
