We investigate the interplay of diffraction and nonlinear effects during propagation of very short light pulses. Adapting the factorization approach to the problem at hand by keeping the transverse-derivative terms apart from the residual nonlinear contributions we derive an unidirectional propagation equation valid for weak dispersion and reducing to the slowly-evolving-wave-approximation for the case of paraxial rays. Comparison of numerical simulation results for the two equations shows pronounced differences when self-focusing plays important role. We devote special attention to modelling propagation of ultrashort terahertz pulses taking into account diffraction as well as Kerr type and second order nonlinearities. Comparing measured and simulated wave forms we deduce the value of the nonlinear refractive index of lithium niobate in the terahertz region to be three orders of magnitude larger than in the visible.
In this work we use femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength to excite and characterize the multiphoton luminescence emission of single gold nanoparticles. For excitation with 100 fs laser pulses we observe a two and three photon emission dominated by radiative electron hole pair recombination, while the emission is caused by radiative plasmon decay for excitation with 500 fs pulses. For single gold nanorods with different aspect ratios, we study the interplay between the particle plasmon and electron hole pairs, which enables us to develop a quantitative model to fully describe the two a…
In the past two decades, tremendous efforts have been exerted to understand and control the delivery of ultrashort laser pulses into various types of transparent materials ranging from glass and crystal to polymer and even bio-materials. This approach opens up the route toward determinative and highly localized modification within the transparent materials, enabling three-dimensional (3D) micromachining of the materials into sophisticated structures and devices with the extreme geometrical flexibility. Owing to the linear diffraction and nonlinear self-focusing effects, the focal volume typica…
When an ultrashort laser pulse is tightly focused to a size approaching its central wavelength, the properties of the focused spot diverge from the diffraction limited case. Here we report on this change in behavior of a tightly focused Petawatt class laser beam by an F/1 off-axis paraboloid (OAP). Considering the effects of residual aberration, the spatial profile of the near field and pointing error, we estimate the deviation in peak intensities of the focused spot from the ideal case. We verify that the estimated peak intensity values are within an acceptable error range of the measured val…
Spin waves in magnetic microresonators are at the core of modern magnonics. Here we demonstrate a new method of tunable excitation of different spin wave modes in magnetic microdisks by using a train of laser pulses coming at a repetition rate higher than the decay rate of spin precession. The microdisks are etched in a transparent bismuth iron garnet film and the light pulses influence the spins nonthermally through the inverse Faraday effect. The high repetition rate of the laser stimulus of 10 GHz establishes an interplay between the spin wave resonances in the frequency and momentum domain…
Interplay between diffraction and the Pancharatnam-Berry phase in inhomogeneously twisted anisotropic media
Alberucci等人,“Electromagnetic confinement via spin-orbit interaction in anisotropic bonding”,ACS Photonics \textbf{3},2249(2016)],我们证明了有效势支持横向限制。在这里,我们发现的准模式的轮廓,并表明,光子势产生的Kapitza效应的光。数值模拟证实了理论结果,占介质双折射。最后,我们详细分析了能够支持非泄漏导模的配置。
Passive mode-locking critically relies on a saturable loss mechanism to form ultrashort pulses. However, in Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM), no actual absorption takes place, but rather losses appear due to diffraction, and actual light must escape the cavity. The Kerr-lens effect works to generate through diffraction an effective instantaneous saturable absorber that delicately depends on the interplay between the spatial and temporal profiles of the pulse. Despite the importance of KLM as a technique for generating ultrafast pulses and the fundamental role of the diffraction losses in its opera…
The temporal characterization of ultrafast laser pulses has become a cornerstone capability of ultrafast optics laboratories and is routine both for optimizing laser pulse duration and designing custom fields. Beyond pure temporal characterization, spatio-temporal characterization provides a more complete measurement of the spatially-varying temporal properties of a laser pulse. These so-called spatio-temporal couplings (STCs) are generally nonseparable chromatic aberrations that can be induced by very common optical elements -- for example diffraction gratings and thick lenses or prisms made …
We describe theoretically and verify experimentally a novel class of diffraction-free pulsed optical beams that are `Omni-resonant': they have the remarkable property of transmission through planar Fabry-Perot resonators without spectral filtering even if their bandwidth far exceeds the cavity resonant linewidth. Ultrashort wave packets endowed with a specific Spatio-temporal structure couple to a \textit{single} resonant mode independently of its linewidth. We confirm that such `space-time' Omni-resonant wave packets retain their bandwidth (1.6~nm), Spatio-temporal profile (1.3-ps pulse width…
We consider radiation generated by an electron travelling parallel to a planar rectangular silicon grating: Smith-Purcell radiation to the vacuum side, internal Smith-Purcell radiation into the dielectric, and Cherenkov radiation into the dielectric. Internal Smith-Purcell radiation dominates over the other two radiation mechanisms in the range where conventional Smith-Purcell radiation is forbidden. This observation may lead to improved design of contactless particle beam monitors.

We propose a self-consistent many-body theory for coupling the ultrafast dipole-transition and carrier-plasma dynamics in a linear array of quantum wires with the scattering and absorption of ultrashort laser pulses. The quantum-wire non-thermal carrier occupations are further driven by an applied DC electric field along the wires in the presence of resistive forces from intrinsic phonon and Coulomb scattering of photo-excited carriers. The same strong DC field greatly modifies the non-equilibrium properties of the induced electron-hole plasma coupled to the propagating light pulse, while the …
Multimode optical fibers has emerged as the platform that will bridge the gap between nonlinear optics in bulk media and in single-mode fibers. However, the understanding of the transition between these two research fields still remains incomplete despite numerous investigations of intermodal nonlinear phenomena and spatiotemporal coupling. Some of the striking phenomena observed in bulk media with ultrashort and ultra-intense pulses (i.e., conical emission, harmonic generation and light bullets) require a deeper insight to be possibly unveiled in multimode fibers. Here we generalize the conce…
The present dissertation covers two related research projects. The first topic was initiated with the ultimate goal of observing quantum degeneracy in ultrashort free electron pulses. This constitutes a thorough theoretical analysis of the problem involving partial quantum coherence and spin polarization of the source in light of a path-integral treatment of the phenomenon of matter-wave diffraction-in-time. Subsequently, results of a trailblazing experiment, to be superseded by a Hanbury Brown-Twiss type conclusive test of free fermion antibunching with electrons, is reported. In this experim…
Propagation-invariant or non-diffracting optical beams have received considerable attention during the last two decades. However, the pulsed nature of light waves and the structured property of optical media like waveguides are often overlooked. We here present a four-dimensional spatiotemporal approach that extends and unifies both concepts of conical waves and helicon beams, mainly studied in bulk media. By taking advantage of tight correlations between the spatial modes, the topological charges, and the frequencies embedded in an optical field, we reveal propagation-invariant (dispersion- a…
Diffraction-before-destruction imaging with single ultrashort X-ray pulses has the potential to visualise non-equilibrium processes, such as chemical reactions, at the nanoscale with sub-femtosecond resolution in the native environment without the need of crystallization. Here, a nanospecimen partially diffracts a single X-ray flash before sample damage occurs. The structural information of the sample can be reconstructed from the coherent X-ray interference image. State-of-art spatial resolution of such snapshots from individual heavy element nanoparticles is limited to a few nanometers. Furt…
Diffraction-free Bessel beams have attracted major interest because of their stability even in regimes of nonlinear propagation and filamentation. However, Kerr nonlinear couplings are known to induce significant longitudinal intensity modulation, detrimental to the generation of uniform plasma or for applications in the processing of transparent materials. These nonlinear instabilities arise from the generation of new spatio-spectral components through an initial stage of continuous spectral broadening followed by four wave mixing. In this paper, we investigate analytically and numerically th…
