We demonstrate a narrow band phase sensitive amplifier in the pump degenerate configuration which employs ps pump pulses. Control of the amplifier bandwidth is achieved via changes of the pump spectral width. A phase sensitive gain between -6 and 6 decibels, with an overall system gain of 28dB was demonstrated.
A semi-classical 7-wave model is developed to investigate the noise performances of a degenerate dual-pump phase sensitive amplifier. This approach takes into account the transfer to the signal, through multiple four-wave mixing processes, of the vacuum fluctuations injected in the high-order waves. This effect leads to a degradation of the noise figure of the amplifier with respect to the 0 dB value predicted by the usual 3-wave model. However, it is proved that a careful choice of the fiber dispersion allows to use the high-order waves to enhance the signal gain without degrading the noise f…
We report on a μJ-scale mid-infrared optical parametric amplifier (OPA) based on the recently developed wide-bandgap orthorhombic crystal, BaGa4S7 (BGS), and directly compare its performance to that of LiGaS2 (LGS) in the same OPA setup. The source is based on a single OPA stage amplifying supercontinuum seed pulses with a quantum efficiency of 29{\%} at an idler wavelength of 10 μm, featuring nominally carrier-envelope phase-stable pulses. As a result of pumping the OPA directly at 1 μm, the overall conversion efficiency far exceeds that of traditional schemes based on OPA's followed by diffe…
Media featuring both optical gain and disorder, such as random lasers, represent formidable challenges as subjects of research due to the high complexity of the light propagation within them; however, dramatic advances in this nascent field have been furnished by the paradigm of applying wavefront shaping techniques to the beam pumping the system. We present here a theoretical and experimental study employing this approach in a gain medium where the disorder arises not from random scattering but rather from the multimodality of a waveguide: an amplifying multimode fiber. The shaping of the cor…
Chip-based optical amplifiers can significantly expand the functionalities of photonic devices. In particular, optical-parametric amplifiers (OPAs), with engineerable gain-spectra, are well-suited for nonlinear-photonic applications. Chip-based OPAs typically require long waveguides that occupy a large footprint, and high pump powers that cannot be easily produced with chip-scale lasers. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a microresonator-assisted regenerative OPA that benefits from the large nonlinearity enhancement of microresonators and yields a high gain in a small footprint. …
We report on an asymmetric high energy dual optical parametric amplifier (OPA) which is capable of having either the idlers, signals, or depleted pumps, relatively phase locked at commensurate or incommensurate wavelengths. Idlers and signals can be locked on the order of 200 mrad rms or better, corresponding to a 212 as jitter at $λ$=2$μ$m. The high energy arm of the OPA outputs a combined 3.5 mJ of signal and idler, while the low energy arm outputs 1.5 mJ, with the entire system being pumped with a 1 kHz, 18 mJ Ti:Sapphire laser. Both arms are independently tunable from 1080 nm-2600 nm. The …
The Free-Electron Laser (FEL) FLASH offers the worldwide still unique capability to study ultrafast processes with high-flux, high-repetition rate XUV and soft X-ray pulses. The vast majority of experiments at FLASH are of pump-probe type. Many of them rely on optical ultrafast lasers. Here, a novel FEL facility laser is reported which combines high average power output from Yb:YAG amplifiers with spectral broadening in a Herriott-type multi-pass cell and subsequent pulse compression to sub-100 fs durations. Compared to other facility lasers employing optical parametric amplification, the new …
The quantum features of ultrashort-pulse optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) are investigated theoretically in the nonlinear regime near and above threshold. Viewing the pulsed OPO as a multimode open quantum system, we rigorously derive a general input-output model that features nonlinear coupling among many cavity (i.e., system) signal modes and a broadband single-pass (i.e., reservoir) pump field. Under appropriate assumptions, our model produces a Lindblad master equation with multimode nonlinear Lindblad operators describing two-photon dissipation and a multimode four-wave-mixing Hamilt…
We present a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture for inverse Raman amplifier design. This model aims at finding the pump powers and wavelengths required for a target signal power evolution, both in distance along the fiber and in frequency. Using the proposed framework, the prediction of the pump configuration required to achieve a target power profile is demonstrated numerically with high accuracy in C-band considering both counter-propagating and bidirectional pumping schemes. For a distributed Raman amplifier based on a 100 km single-mode fiber, a low mean set (0.51, 0.54 and 0.…
Frequency conversion of light can be dramatically enhanced using high quality factor ($Q$-factor) cavities. Unfortunately, the achievable conversion efficiencies and conversion bandwidths are fundamentally limited by the time-bandwidth limit of the cavity, restricting their use in frequency conversion of ultrashort pulses. Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate sum-frequency generation based frequency conversion using a metasurface-based cavity configuration that could overcome this limitation. The proposed experimental configuration takes use of the spatially dispersive responses of per…
