We have monitored the space-time transformation of 150-fs pulse, undergoing self-focusing and filamentation in water, by means of the nonlinear gating tech- nique. We have observed that pulse splitting and subsequent recombination apply to axial temporal intensity only, whereas space-integrated pulse profile preserves its original shape.
Propagation of ultrashort electromagnetic wave packets in free space beyond the paraxial and slowly-varying-envelope approximations : a time-domain approach
This is a summary directed to PhD students of the research work conducted on the problem of the production of "light bullets", or multidimensional wave packets that propagate without distortion in unbounded, homogeneous, nonlinear media, and on the actual nature of the self-localized light wave packets spontaneously generated in self-focusing experiments with ultrashort pulses.
In situ accurate determination of the zero time delay between two independent ultrashort laser pulses by observing the oscillation of an atomic excited wave packet
Acoustic signals generated by filamentation of ultrashort TW laser pulses in water are characterized experimentally. Measurements reveal a strong influence of input pulse duration on the shape and intensity of the acoustic wave. Numerical simulations of the laser pulse nonlinear propagation and the subsequent water hydrodynamics and acoustic wave generation show that the strong acoustic emission is related to the mechanism of superfilamention in water. The elongated shape of the plasma volume where energy is deposited drives the far-field profile of the acoustic signal, which takes the form of…
We describe theoretically and verify experimentally a novel class of diffraction-free pulsed optical beams that are `Omni-resonant': they have the remarkable property of transmission through planar Fabry-Perot resonators without spectral filtering even if their bandwidth far exceeds the cavity resonant linewidth. Ultrashort wave packets endowed with a specific Spatio-temporal structure couple to a \textit{single} resonant mode independently of its linewidth. We confirm that such `space-time' Omni-resonant wave packets retain their bandwidth (1.6~nm), Spatio-temporal profile (1.3-ps pulse width…
The coherent interaction with ultrashort light pulses is a powerful strategy for monitoring and controlling the dynamics of wave packets in all states of matter. As light presents an oscillation period of a few femtoseconds ($T=2.6$~fs in the near infrared spectral range), the fundamental light-matter interaction occurs on the sub-cycle timescale, i.e. in a few hundred attoseconds. In this work, we resolve the dynamics of autoionizing states on the femtosecond timescale and observe the sub-cycle evolution of a coherent electronic wave packet in a diatomic molecule, exploiting a tunable ultrash…
Recently, there has been growing interest in terahertz (THz) wave generation from liquids under optical excitation. Here, we propose and demonstrate the use of liquid lines in place of liquid films as THz emitters to boost THz signals. The geometry of the emitter eliminates the total internal reflection at the flat liquid-air interface. In addition, we observe that the polarity of the liquid has a significant influence on the THz wave generation. Alpha-pinene, a nonpolar liquid, offers much stronger THz radiation than water does. Besides paving the way to develop intense liquid THz sources, ou…
Modulation of the optical index by means of atomic and material resonances provides a basis for controlling light propagation in natural and artificially fabricated materials. In addition, recent advances in the tuning of spatiotemporal couplings of ultrashort laser pulses have enabled almost arbitrary control over the group velocity of light. Here, using femtosecond time-resolved microscopy and numerical calculations, we investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a surface plasmon polariton wave packet (SPP WP) that interacts with a plasmonic nanocavity. The nanocavity consists of metal-insul…
The multiple scattering of an ultrashort laser pulse by a turbid dispersive medium (namely a cloud of bubbles in water) is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The theory of Gouesbet and Gréhan [Part. Part. Syst. Charact. 17 213-224 (2000)] is used to derive an energetic model of the scattering transient. The spreading and extinction of the pulse is decoupled from the transient of scattering to describe each phenomenon individually. The transient of scattering is modeled with the Lorenz-Mie Theory, thus also valid for a relative refractive index lower than one, contrary to the Deb…
We present numerical simulations of ultrafast multiphoton ionization dynamics in a two-dimensional atomic model driven by co- and counterrotating circularly polarized single-color and bichromatic carrier envelope phase (CEP) stable ultrashort laser pulse sequences. Taking into account phase variations due to CEP fluctuations and the Gouy phase, our results accurately reproduce recently measured photoelectron momentum distributions [Pengel et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 053003 (2017), Phys. Rev. A 96, 043426 (2017); Kerbstadt et al., Nat. Comm. 10, 685 (2019), Adv. Phys. X 4, 1672583 (2019)]. Th…
The attosecond streaking technique is normally utilized to characterize the attosecond pulses in extreme ultraviolet spectrum, while the pulse simulation and reconstruction schemes turn out to be unreliable for extremely short sub-100as pulses. Based on systematical analysis and subtle investigation, we developed a dynamic streaking model for ultrashort photoelectron pulses and demonstrated concretely how the temporal phase of attosecond pulses would influence the streaked spectrogram. Upon that, a novel numeric scheme is established to retrieve the pulse-lengths and chirps. Different with the…
In any form of wave propagation, strong spatiotemporal coupling appears when non-elementary, three-dimensional wave-packets are composed by superimposing pure plane waves, or spontaneously generated by light-matter interaction and nonlinear processes. Ultrashort pulses with orbital angular momentum (OAM), or ultrashort vortices, furnish a critical paradigm in which the analysis of the spatiotemporal coupling in the form of temporal-OAM coupling can be carried out accurately by analytical tools. By generalizing and unifying previously reported results, we show that universal and spatially heter…
In a water-air optical wireless communication (OWC) channel, dynamic ocean waves may significantly deflect the light beam from its original direction, thus deteriorating the communication performance. In this letter, a beam tracking system to mitigate wave-induced communication degradation is experimentally demonstrated. By employing the beam tracking on the PAM6 system, a maximum of 486% improvement (from 140 Mb/s to 820 Mb/s) in throughput is realized at a 1.2-m air distance for an average wave slope changing rate of 0.34 rad/s. For PAM4 signals, the packet loss rate reduces significantly fr…
Time varying media recently emerged as promising candidates to fulfill the dream of controlling the wave frequency without nonlinear effects. However, frequency conversion remains limited by the dynamics of the variations of the propagation properties. Here we propose a new concept of space-time cascade to achieve arbitrary large frequency shifts by iterated elementary transformation cycles. These cycles use an intermediate medium in which wave packets enter and exit through non-commutative space and time interfaces. This concept avoids high frequency or sub-wavelength demanding metamaterials.…
