We demonstrate a novel, composite laser written 3D waveguide, fabricated in boro-aluminosilicate glass, with a refractive index contrast of 1.12 x 10^-2. The waveguide is fabricated using a multi-pass approach which leverages the respective refractive index modification mechanisms of both the thermal and athermal inscription regimes. We present the study and optimisation of inscription parameters for maximising positive refractive index change and ultimately demonstrate a dramatic advancement on the state of the art of bend losses in laser-written waveguides. The 1.0 dB cm^-1 bend loss cut-off radius is reduced from 10 mm to 4 mm, at a propagation wavelength of 1550 nm.
We study the transmission properties for the waveguide bends composed by a circular photonic crystal. Two types (Y and U type) of the waveguide bends utilizing the circular photonic crystal are studied. It has been shown, compared with the conventional photonic crystal waveguide bends, transmission properties for these bends can be significantly improved. Over a 6.4% bandwidth, less than 1-dB loss/bend are observed. U bent waveguide, i.e., $180^o$ bend, can be easily realized with low loss using the circular photonic crystal.
The paper proposes a method to characterize the bend discontinuity for plasmonic and spoof plasmonic waveguides in terms of scattering parameters. By means of this method, the waveguide is modelled by a two-port network and its scattering parameters are extracted. The parameters for the L-shaped sharp curved bends at different frequencies and under different bending angles are determined.
In this work we present a detailed analysis of individual loss mechanisms in silicon nitride partial Euler bends at a wavelength of 850 nm. This structure optimizes the transmission through small radii optical waveguide bends. The partial Euler bend geometry balances losses arising from the transition from the straight to the bend waveguide mode, and radiative losses of the bend waveguide mode. Numerical analyses are presented for 45-degree bends commonly employed in S-bend configurations to create lateral offsets, as well as 90- and 180-degree bends. Additionally, 90-degree partial Euler bend…
The spectral dependence of a bending loss of cascaded 60-degree bends in photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides is explored in a slab-type silicon-on-insulator system. Ultra-low bending loss of (0.05+/-0.03)dB/bend is measured at wavelengths corresponding to the nearly dispersionless transmission regime. In contrast, the PhC bend is found to become completely opaque for wavelengths range corresponding to the slow light regime. A general strategy is presented and experimentally verified to optimize the bend design for improved slow light transmission.
We demonstrate that a transformation device can be emulated using a gradient-index waveguide. The effective index of the waveguide is spatially varied by tailoring a gradient thickness dielectric waveguide. Based on this technology, we demonstrate a transformation device guiding visible light around a sharp corner, with low scattering loss and reflection loss. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical results.
We present a novel method to fabricate low bend loss femtosecond-laser written waveguides that exploits the differential thermal stabilities of laser induced refractive index modifications. The technique consists of a two-step process; the first involves fabricating large multimode waveguides, while the second step consists of a thermal post-annealing process, which erases the outer ring of the refractive index profile, enabling single mode operation in the C-band. By using this procedure we report waveguides with sharp bends (down to 16.6 mm radius) and high (80%) normalized throughputs. This…
Waveguides composed of electromagnetically-coupled optical microcavities (coupled resonator optical waveguides or CROWs) can be used for light guiding, slowing and storage. In this paper, we present a two-dimensional analysis of finite-size straight and curved CROW sections based on a rigorous Muller boundary integral equations method. We study mechanisms of the coupling of whispering gallery (WG) modes and guiding light around bends in CROWs composed of both identical and size-mismatched microdisk resonators. Our accurate analysis reveals differences in WG modes coupling in the vicinity of be…
Even though submicron silicon waveguides have been proposed for dense integration of photonic devices, to date the lightwave circuits on the market mainly rely on waveguides with micron-scale core dimensions. These larger waveguides feature easier fabrication, higher reliability and better interfacing to optical fibres. Single-mode operation with large core dimensions is obtained with low lateral refractive index contrast. Hence, the main limitation in increasing the level of integration and in reducing the cost of micron-scale waveguide circuits is their mm- to cm-scale minimum bending radius…
The quest for practical waveguides operating in the terahertz range faces two major hurdles: large losses and high rigidity. While recent years have been marked by remarkable progress in lowering the impact of material losses using hollow-core guidance, such waveguides are typically not flexible. Here we experimentally and numerically investigate antiresonant dielectric waveguides made of polyurethane, a commonly used dielectric with a low Young's modulus. The hollow-core nature of antiresonant fibers leads to low transmission losses using simple structures, whereas the low Young's modulus of …
Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides with different geometries have been employed to design various integrated optical components. Reducing the bending radius of the SOI waveguides with low bending loss is essential in minimizing the footprint of light-wave circuits. The propagating mode is less confined in the core of the ultra-thin SOI waveguide and penetrates to substrate and cladding, leading to higher bending loss compared with conventional SOI waveguide with the thicker guiding layer. While various bending mechanisms have been utilized to reduce the bending loss of conventional SOI wave…
Low-index contrast waveguides such as silica waveguides are indispensable part of passive integrated optical components. Reducing the bending radius of silica waveguides with low bend loss is vital in miniaturizing silica planar lightwave circuits. The Eaton lens is a gradient index lens that can bend parallel light rays by 90°, 180°, or 360°. We present a low-loss and compact 90° waveguide bend with a radius of 9 $μ$m designed by truncating the Eaton lens. The performance of the designed bend, implemented by graded photonic crystal, was evaluated by full-wave two-dimensional finite element me…
We report the fabrication and performance of the first C-band directly-written monolithic waveguide-laser. The waveguide-laser device was created in an Erbium and Ytterbium doped phosphate glass host and consisted of an optical waveguide that included a distributed feedback Bragg grating structure. The femtosecond laser direct-write technique was used to create both the waveguide and the waveguide-Bragg grating simultaneously and in a single processing step. The waveguide-laser was optically pumped at approximately 980 nm and lased at 1537nm with a bandwidth of less than 4 pm.
Reducing the bending radius of low-index contrast waveguides is essential in reducing the size of the integrated optical components. A polymeric multimode waveguide bend is presented based on the Eaton lens. The ray-tracing calculations are utilized to truncate the Eaton lens in order to improve the performance of the bend. The truncation of the lens decreases the footprint of the bend as well. The designed waveguide bend with a radius of 18.4 $μm$ is implemented by concentric cylindrical multilayer structure. The average bend losses of 0.69 and 0.87 dB are achieved for the $TM_0$ and $TM_1$ m…
We investigate the performance of bends and splitters in graphene nanoribbon waveguides. Although the graphene waveguides are lossy themselves, we show that bends and splitters do not induce any additional loss provided that the nanoribbon width is sub-wavelength. We use transmission line theory to qualitatively interpret the behavior observed in our simulation. Our results pave a promising way to realize ultra-compact devices operating in the terahertz region.
A first demonstration and complete characterization of mid-infrared waveguides in diamond are reported in detail. Waveguides were designed for 2.4 um and 8.6 um waveguiding, with their group velocity dispersion was analyzed using femtosecond pulses at 2.4 um wavelength propagated through the waveguide and the bulk substrate. The total dispersion was found to be dominated by the bulk material rather than the waveguide, and was on the range of 275 fs2/mm, demonstrating that femtosecond laser written modifications in diamond introduce negligible perturbations to the intrinsic material.
A widespread, intuitive and computationally inexpensive method to analyze light guidance through waveguide bends is by introducing an equivalent straight waveguide with refractive index profile modified to account for actual waveguide bend. Here we revise the commonly used equivalent-index formula, ending up with its simple extension that enables rigorous treatment of one- and two-dimensionally confined, uniformly bent waveguides, including tightly coiled microstructure fibers, curved ridge waveguides and ring microresonators. We also show that such technique is applicable only to waveguides c…
We present direct UV-written waveguides and Bragg gratings operating at 780 nm. By combining two gratings into a Fabry-Perot cavity we have devised and implemented a novel and practical method of measuring the group delay of Bragg gratings.
In this work, a plasmonic right-angled waveguide bend and divider are proposed. Using the Transformation Optics (TO) approach the transformation media of a bend and a T-shaped divider are obtained. Such media with continuous refractive index are realized with the help of graphene in the terahertz frequency range, key to effectively guiding the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation on the 90 degree curves. Components with such capability are promising for THz device applications.
The control of light by light is one of the main aims in modern photonics. In this context, a fundamental cornerstone is the realization of light-written waveguides in real time, resulting in all-optical reconfigurability of communication networks. Light-written waveguides are often associated with spatial solitons, that is, non-diffracting waves due to a nonlinear self-focusing effect in the harmonic regime. From an applicative point of view, it is important to establish the temporal dynamics for the formation of such light-written guides. Here we investigate theoretically the temporal dynami…
Mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) is attractive as a means to increase the link capacity of a single wavelength for optical interconnects via the use of multiple mode-channels in multimode bus waveguide. In order to route the data in MDM systems, waveguide bends are typically needed. In particular, ultra-sharp bends are desirable for reducing the chip area occupied by high-density photonic intergrated circuits (PICs). In this work, we propose and demonstrate a novel meta-surfaced waveguide structure on silicon, which enables ultral-sharp multimode waveguide bends to have low loss and low crosstal…
Understanding the physical mechanisms of the refractive index modulation induced by femtosecond laser writing is crucial for tailoring the properties of the resulting optical waveguides. In this work we apply polarized Raman spectroscopy to study the origin of stress-induced waveguides in diamond, produced by femtosecond laser writing. The change in the refractive index induced by the femtosecond laser in the crystal is derived from the measured stress in the waveguides. The results help to explain the waveguide polarization sensitive guiding mechanism, as well as providing a technique for the…
We find the one-way mode can be well-confined at the magnetic domain wall by the photonic bandgap of gyromagnetic bulk material. Utilizing the well-confined one-way mode at the domain wall, we demonstrate the photonic one-way waveguide, splitter and bender can be realized with simple structures, which are predicted to be high-efficiency, broadband, frequency-independent, reflection-free, crosstalk-proof and robustness against disorder. Additionally, we find that the splitter and bender in our proposal can be transformed into each other with magnetic control, which may have great potential appl…
Optical technologies call for waveguide networks featuring high integration densities, low losses, and simple operation. Here, we present polymer waveguides fabricated from a negative tone photoresist via two-photon-lithography in direct laser writing, and show a detailed parameter study of their performance. Specifically, we produce waveguides featuring bend radii down to 40 μm, insertion losses of the order of 10 dB, and loss coefficients smaller than 0.81 dB/mm, facilitating high integration densities in writing fields of 300 μm x 300 μm. A novel three-dimensional coupler design allows for …
In this paper we report suspended silicon waveguides operating at a wavelength of 7.67 mm with a propagation loss of 3.1 ? 0.3 dB/cm. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of low loss silicon waveguides at such a long wavelength, with loss comparable to other platforms that use more exotic materials. The suspended Si waveguide core is supported by a subwavelength grating that provides lateral optical confinement, while also allowing access to the buried oxide layer so that it can be wet etched using hydrofluoric acid. We also demonstrate low loss waveguide bends and s-bends.
Micro-bending attenuation in an optical waveguide can be modeled by a Fokker-Planck equation. It is shown that a supersymmetric transformation applied to the Fokker-Planck equation is equivalent to a change in the refractive index profile, resulting in a larger or smaller attenuation. For a broad class of monomial index profiles, it is always possible to obtain an index profile with a larger micro-bending attenuation using a supersymmetric transformation. However, obtaining a smaller attenuation is not always possible and is restricted to a subset of index profiles.

We investigate nonlinear one- and two-dimensional photonic crystals by applying a finite element-iterative method.Numerical results show the essential influence of nonlinear elements embedded into a quarter-wave stack and the sharp photonic crystal waveguide bend on the spectral characteristics of these structures. We compare our results with those obtained in [21] from the discrete equation method for the case of a sharp waveguide bend. The comparison shows that neglecting the nonuniform field distribution inside the embedded nonlinear elements leads to overestimation of the waveguide bend tr…
We study the optically-induced growth and interaction of self-written waveguides in a photopolymerizable resin. We investigate experimentally how the interaction depends on the mutual coherence and relative power of the input beams, and suggest an improved analytical model that describes the growth of single self-written waveguides and the main features of their interaction in photosensitive materials.
Several practical implementations of the THz wire waveguides are proposed combining the low-loss, low group velocity dispersion and simplicity of excitation of the two-wire metal waveguide with the ease of manufacturing, possibility of bending and a convenient access to a modal power of the hollow core waveguide. Optical properties of the wire waveguides are investigated experimentally by THz-TDS spectroscopy and numerically using the finite element method confirming TEM-mode guidance in a broad spectral range.
Beam propagation beyond the paraxial approximation is studied in an optically written waveguide structure. The waveguide structure that leads to diffractionless light propagation, is imprinted on a medium consisting of a five-level atomic vapor driven by an incoherent pump and two coherent spatially dependent control and plane-wave fields. We first study propagation in a single optically written waveguide, and find that the paraxial approximation does not provide an accurate description of the probe propagation. We then employ coherent control fields such that two parallel and one tilted Gauss…
Currently, direct-write waveguide fabrication is probably the most widely studied application of femtosecond laser micromachining in transparent dielectrics. Devices such as buried waveguides, power splitters, couplers, gratings and optical amplifiers have all been demonstrated. Waveguide properties depend critically on the sample material properties and writing laser characteristics. In this paper we discuss the challenges facing researchers using the femtosecond laser direct-write technique with specific emphasis being placed on the suitability of fused silica and phosphate glass as device h…
Micro-bending is a well-known source of loss in optical waveguides. By treating the micro-bending as a stochastic process, the problem of loss mitigation can be modeled in terms of a Fokker-Planck equation. Given an initial refractive index profile, and taking micro-bending into account, we develop a formalism to derive a new refractive index profile which potentially results in less loss. Our formalism is based on applying the techniques of Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics to a Fokker-Planck equation that is associated with a particular refractive index profile. We derive a non-linear differe…
We present a semianalytical method to obtain perfect transmission across abrupt H-plane bends in single-mode rectangular waveguides using a single passive polarizable element (scatterer). The underlying analysis and synthesis schemes are inspired by the rapidly-growing research on metagratings, typically used to manipulate wave trajectories in free-space. These sparse configurations of subwavelength polarizable particles (meta-atoms) are designed by careful tailoring of inter-element near-field and far-field interactions, relying on analytical models to resolve the required meta-atom distribut…
We report on the first realization of an integrated optical memory for light based on a laser written waveguide in a doped crystal. Using femto-second laser micromachining, we fabricate waveguides in Pr$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal. We demonstrate that the waveguide inscription does not affect the coherence properties of the material and that the light confinement in the waveguide increases the interaction with the active ions by a factor 6. We also demonstrate that, analogously to the bulk crystals, we can operate the optical pumping protocols necessary to prepare the population in atomic freq…
The authors describe the fabrication of buried waveguides in a highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass, gallium lanthanum sulfide, using focused femtosecond laser pulses. Through optical characterization of the waveguides, they have proposed a formation mechanism and provide comparisons to previous work. Tunneling has been identified as the dominant nonlinear absorption mechanism in the formation of the waveguides. Single mode guidance at 633 nm has been demonstrated. The writing parameters for the minimum propagation loss of 1.47 dB/cm are 0.36 uJ pulse energy and 50 um/s scanning speed.
Low loss, optical channel waveguides have been successfully produced by high repetition rate, femtosecond laser inscription in a Li-Zn fluoroborate glass (64.9B2O3 + 25Li2O + 10ZnF2 + 0.1Er2O3). High quality waveguides were produced at 500 kHz, 1 MHz and 2 MHz laser repetition rates, showing a refractive index contrast in the range of 3-6 x 10-3 depending on various fluences. Dependence of experimental parameters such as average laser power, pulse repetition rate and writing speed on the properties of fabricated waveguides has been discussed. The comparison of optical and compositional charact…

Low-loss single-mode optical waveguide fabrication process in extra-white soda-lime glass is demonstrated. Waveguiding structures are formed in bulk substrates employing femtosecond laser writing technology. The combination of a slit beam-shaping method and a multiscan fabrication process enables printing of waveguides with a well-defined symmetric cross-section profile. Fabricated waveguides exhibit 0.86 dB/cm propagation loss for 800~nm wavelength. Bending loss in the waveguides are addressed experimentally and compared with a model for radiation loss.
Formation of femtosecond laser direct-written positive refractive index waveguides in Gallium Lanthanum Sulphide (GLS) glass is explained for the first time. Evidence of structural changes and ion migration are presented using Raman spectroscopy and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), respectively. 2-D Raman spectra maps reveal a peak shift and full-width at half maximum variations in the symmetric vibrations of GaS4 main band. For the first time, the 2D map of the boson band was successfully used to identify and understand the material densification profile in a high refractive index glass w…
We demonstrate a monolithically integrable heralded photon source in a femtosecond laser direct written glass waveguide. The generation of photon pairs with a wide wavelength separation requires a concomitant large birefringence in the normal dispersion regime. Here, by incorporation of side-stress tracks, we produce a waveguide with a birefringence of $1.64\times~10^{-4}$ and propagation loss as low as 0.21 dB/cm near 980~nm. We measure photon pairs with 300~nm wavelength separation at an internal generation rate exceeding $5.05\times10^6$/s. The second order correlations indicate that the ge…
Ion migration in high repetition rate femtosecond laser inscribed waveguides is currently being reported in different optical glasses. For the first time we discuss and experimentally demonstrate the presence of two regimes of ion migration found in laser written waveguides. Regime-I, corresponds to the initial waveguide formation mainly via light element migration (in our case atomic weight < 31u), whereas regime-II majorly corresponds to the movement of heavy elements. This behavior brings attention to a problem which has never been analyzed before and that affects laser written active waveg…
Third harmonic generation microscopy has been used to analyze the morphology of photonic structures created using the femtosecond laser direct-write technique. A sensorless adaptive optical system was used to correct the optical aberrations occurring in the sample and microscope system, which had a lateral resolution of less than 500 nm. This non-destructive testing method creates volume reconstructions of photonic devices and reveals details invisible to other l…

We report photonic quantum circuits created using an ultrafast laser processing technique that is rapid, requires no lithographic mask and can be used to create three-dimensional networks of waveguide devices. We have characterized directional couplers--the key functional elements of photonic quantum circuits--and found that they perform as well as lithographically produced waveguide devices. We further demonstrate high-performance interferometers and an important multi-photon quantum interference phenomenon for the first time in integrated optics. This direct-write approach will enable the ra…
The number of waveguides crossing an intersection increases with the development of complex photonic integrated circuits. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate that Maxwell's fish-eye (MFE) lens can be used as a multiband crossing medium. In previous designs of waveguide intersection, bends are needed before and after the intersection to adjust the crossing angle resulting in a larger footprint. The presented design incorporates the waveguide bends into the intersection which saves footprint. In this paper, 4x4 and 6x6 intersections based on ideal and graded photonic crystal (GPC)…
Dense waveguide arrays with half-wavelength-pitch, low-crosstalk, broadband, and flexible routing capability are essential for integrated photonics. However, achieving such performance is challenging due to the relatively weaker confinement of dielectric waveguides and the increased interactions among densely packed waveguides. Here, leveraging the artificial gauge field mechanism, we demonstrate half-wavelength-pitched dense waveguide arrays, consisting of 64 waveguides, in silicon with -30dB crosstalk suppression from 1480nm to 1550nm. The waveguide array features negligible insertion loss f…
Direct UV-written waveguides are fabricated in silica-on-silicon with birefringence of $(4.9 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-4}$, much greater than previously reported in this platform. We show that these waveguides are suitable for the generation of heralded single photons at telecommunication wavelengths by spontaneous four-wave mixing. A pulsed pump field at 1060 nm generates pairs of photons in highly detuned, spectrally uncorrelated modes near 1550 nm and 800 nm. Waveguide-to-fiber coupling efficiencies of 78-91% are achieved for all fields. Waveguide birefringence is controlled through dopant conce…
The ability to navigate light signals in two-dimensional networks of waveguide arrays is a prerequisite for the development of all-optical integrated circuits for information processing and networking. In this article, we present a theoretical analysis of bending losses in linear photonic lattices with engineered couplings, and discuss possible ways for their minimization. In contrast to previous work in the field, the lattices under consideration operate in the linear regime, in the sense that discrete solitons cannot exist. The present results suggest that the functionality of linear wavegui…
We propose a design of two-dimensional bi-anisotropic meta-waveguide exhibiting topologically nontrivial photonic phase and robust photonic transport. The structure proposed represents a waveguide formed by a periodic array of metallic cylinders placed inside parallel metal plates and is designed to support two pairs of Dirac cones thus allowing emulation of the spin of the electrons in condensed matter systems. It is shown, that by making the meta-waveguide bi-anisotropic one can mimic the spin-orbital interaction in topological insulators and open a complete photonic topological band gap. Fi…

Dielectric optical waveguides constitute the main building blocks of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Channels with high refractive index contrast can provide very compact PIC components whereas structures with lower index exhibit less propagation loss. A hybrid concept that can combine the best of high- and low-index materials is highly required. Here, we devise a new approach to realize compact and low-loss hybrid optical waveguides based on the interaction of weak optical modes. This is a rather universal approach that can be applied to a wide range of optical materials. To prove the pr…
