Satellite-based quantum technologies represent a possible route for extending the achievable range of quantum communication, allowing the construction of worldwide quantum networks without quantum repeaters. In space missions, however, the volume available for the instrumentation is limited, and footprint is a crucial specification of the devices that can be employed. Integrated optics could be highly beneficial in this sense, as it allows for the miniaturization of different functionalities in small and monolithic photonic circuits. In this work, we report on the qualification of waveguides fabricated in glass by femtosecond laser micromachining for their use in a low Earth orbit space environment. In particular, we exposed different laser written integrated devices, such as straight waveguides, directional couplers, and Mach-Zehnder interferometers, to suitable proton and $γ$-ray irradiation. Our experiments show that no significant changes have been induced to their characteristics and performances by the radiation exposure. Our results, combined with the high compatibility of laser-written optical circuits to quantum communication applications, pave the way for the use of laser-written integrated photonic components in future satellite missions.
Quill effect, one of the intriguing phenomena in ultrafast laser writing, to our knowledge, has not been studied in low-loss-waveguide (LLW) writing regime yet, probably due to its invisibility under conventional white-light microscope in that regime. In this report, with help of adaptive third harmonic generation microscopy we reveal the quill effect in LLW writing regime and study its influences on the properties of written photonic integrated components in term of polarization-related properties in fused silica and beam-splitting ratio of three-waveguide-coupler in borosilicate glass.
We present the realization of mid-infrared waveguide by ultrafast laser inscription technique in a chalcogenide glass. Our approach is based on multicore waveguide that consists in an alignment on a mesh of positive refractive index channels placed parallel to each other. Two different meshes are investigated with different refractive index contrasts between the channel and the glass matrix. A detailed analysis of the performances at a wavelength of 4.5 $μ$m shows propagation losses of 0.20 $\pm$ 0.05 dB/cm and coupling efficiencies higher than 60 %.

We demonstrate ultrafast all-optical deflection of spatial solitons in an AlGaAs slab waveguide using 190 fs, 1550 nm pulses which are used to generate and deflect the spatial soliton. The steering beam is focused onto the top of the waveguide near the soliton pathway and the soliton is steered due to refractive index changes induced by optical Kerr, or free carrier (Drude) effects. Angular deflections up to 8 mR are observed.
All-optical switches have attracted attention because they can potentially overcome the speed limitation of electric switches. However, ultrafast, energy-efficient all-optical switches have been challenging to realize due to the intrinsically small optical nonlinearity in existing materials. As a solution, we propose graphene-loaded deep-subwavelength plasmonic waveguides (30 nm x 20 nm). Thanks to extreme light confinement, we have significantly enhanced optical nonlinear absorption in graphene, and achieved ultrafast all-optical switching with a switching energy of 35 fJ and a switching time…
Three dimensional waveguides within the bulk of diamond are manufactured using ultrafast laser fabrication. High intensities within the focal volume of the laser cause breakdown of the diamond into a graphitic phase leading to a stress induced refractive index change in neighboring regions. Type II waveguiding is thus enabled between two adjacent graphitic tracks, but supporting just a single polarization state. We show that adaptive aberration correction during the laser processing allows the controlled fabrication of more complex structures beneath the surface of the diamond which can be use…
We propose a novel ultrafast electronic switching device based on dual-graphene electron waveguides, in analogy to the optical dual-channel waveguide device. The design utilizes the principle of coherent quantum mechanical tunneling of Rabi oscillations between the two graphene electron waveguides. Based on a modified coupled mode theory, we construct a theoretical model to analyse the device characteristics, and predict that the swtiching speed is faster than 1 ps. Due to the long mean free path of electrons in graphene at room temperature, the proposed design avoids the limitation of low tem…

The requirement for optical-electrical-optical conversion of signals in optical technologies is often one of the majors bottleneck in terms of speed and energy consumption. The use of dressed photons (also called polaritons), that allows for intrinsic sizable interactions, could significantly improve the performances of optical integrated elements such as switches or optical gates. In this work we demonstrate the ultrafast switch of a laser coupled into a polaritonic waveguide triggered by an optical pulse resonant with the same dispersion but at a lower energy. Our experiments show two effect…
Zirconium fluoride (ZBLAN) glass, the standard material used in fiber-based mid-infrared photonics, has been re-designed to enable the fabrication of high index-contrast low-loss waveguides via femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate that in contrast to pure ZBLAN, a positive index change of close to 10$^{-2}$ can be induced in hybrid zirconium/hafnium (Z/HBLAN) glasses during ultrafast laser inscription and show that this can be explained by an electron cloud distortion effect that is driven by the existence of two glass formers with contrasting polarizability. High numerical apertur…
We demonstrate the potential of birefringence-based, all-optical, ultrafast conversion between the transverse modes in integrated optical waveguides by modelling the conversion process by numerically solving the multi-mode coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations. The observed conversion is induced by a control beam and due to the Kerr effect, resulting in a transient index grating which coherently scatters probe light from one transverse waveguide mode into another. We introduce birefringent phase matching to enable efficient all-optically induced mode conversion at different wavelengths of t…
We study the coupling between photonic molecules and waveguides in photonic crystal slab structures using finite-difference time-domain method and coupled mode theory. In a photonic molecule with two cavities, the coupling of cavity modes results in two super-modes with symmetric and anti-symmetric field distributions. When two super-modes are excited simultaneously, the energy of electric field oscillates between the two cavities. To excite and probe the energy oscillation, we integrate photonic molecule with two photonic crystal waveguides. In coupled structure, we find that the quality fact…
Using ultrafast laser inscription, we report the fabrication of a prototype three-dimensional 121-waveguide fan-out device capable of reformatting the output of a 120 core multicore fiber (MCF) into a one-dimensional linear array. When used in conjunction with an actual MCF, we demonstrate that the reformatting function using this prototype would result in an overall throughput loss of approximately 7.0 dB. However, if perfect coupling from the MCF into the fan-out could be achieved, the reformatting function would result in an overall loss of only approximately 1.7 dB. With adequate developme…
We investigate the ultrafast nonlinear dynamics of light emitted in an active plasmonic waveguide composed of a thin film of gold sandwiched by two silicon layers immersed in externally pumped Al$_2$O$_3$:Er$^{3+}$. We model optical propagation in such a dissipative system through a generalized cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation accounting for the amplification of the active medium and the effect of absorption and thermo-modulational nonlinearity of gold. We find that heating heavily affects the propagation of temporal dissipative solitons in such a plasmonic waveguide by producing a soliton self-…
We report mode-locked ~1550 nm output of transform-limited ~180 fs pulses from a large mode-area (diameter ~ 50 μm) guided-wave erbium fluorozirconate glass laser. The passively mode-locked oscillator generates pulses with 25 nm bandwidth at 156 MHz repetition rate and peak-power of 260 W. Scalability to higher repetition rate is demonstrated by transform-limited 410 fs pulse output at 1.3 GHz. To understand the origins of the broad spectral output, the laser cavity is simulated by using a numerical solution to the Ginzburg-Landau equation. This paper reports the widest bandwidth and shortest …
We demonstrate, by theory and experiment, the ultrafast tilting of the dispersion curve of a photonic-crystal waveguide following the absorption of a femtosecond pump pulse. By shaping the pump-beam cross section with a nanometric shadow mask, different waveguide eigenmodes acquire different spatial overlap with the perturbing pump, leading to a local flattening of the dispersion by up to 11 %. We find that such partial mode perturbation can be used to adiabatically compress the spectrum of a light pulse traveling through the waveguide.

Gas-filled hollow-core fibres are a flexible platform for the manipulation of ultrafast laser pulses through a variety of nonlinear optical effects. Efficient high-fidelity coupling of the initial pulses is very important for system performance. Here we study the effect of self-focusing in gas-cell windows on the coupling of ultrafast laser pulses into hollow-core fibres using (2+1)-dimensional numerical simulations. As expected, we find that the coupling efficiency is degraded and the duration of the coupled pulses changed when the entrance window is too close to the fibre entrance. The inter…
Modern nonlinear optical materials allow light of one wavelength be efficiently converted into light at another wavelength. However, designing nonlinear optical materials to operate with ultrashort pulses is difficult, because it is necessary to match both the phase velocities and group velocities of the light. Here we show that self-organized nonlinear gratings can be formed with femtosecond pulses propagating through nanophotonic waveguides, providing simultaneous group-velocity matching and quasi-phase-matching for second harmonic generation. We record the first direct microscopy images of …
Ultrafast sub-ps THz pulse conveys rich distinctive spectral fingerprints related to the vibrational or rotational modes of biomolecules and can be used to resolve the time-dependent dynamics of the motions. Thus, an efficient platform for enhancing the THz light-matter interaction is strongly demanded. Waveguides, owing to their tightly spatial confinement of the electromagnetic fields and the longer interaction distance, are promising platforms. However, the efficient feeding of the sub-ps THz pulse to the waveguides remains challenging due to the ultra-wide bandwidth property of the ultrafa…
Using long-range surface plasmon polaritons light can propagate in metal nano-scale waveguides for ultracompact opto-electronic devices. Gold is an important material for plasmonic waveguides, but although its linear optical properties are fairly well understood, the nonlinear response is still under investigation. We consider propagation of pulses in ultrathin gold strip waveguides, modeled by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The nonlinear response of gold is accounted for by the two-temperature model, revealing it as a delayed nonlinearity intrinsic in gold. The consequence is that the me…

Achieving ultrafast all-optical switching in a silicon waveguide geometry is a key milestone on the way to an integrated platform capable of handling the increasing demands for higher speed and higher capacity for information transfer. Given the weak electro-optic and thermo-optic effects in silicon, there has been intense interest in hybrid structures in which that switching could be accomplished by integrating another material into the waveguide, including the phase-changing material, vanadium dioxide (VO2). It has long been known that the phase transition in VO2 can be triggered by ultrafas…
This work demonstrates the Nd:YAG waveguide laser as an efficient platform for the bio-sensing. The waveguide was fabricated in the Nd:YAG crystal by the cooperation of the ultrafast laser writing and ion irradiation. As the laser oscillation in the Nd:YAG waveguide is ultra-sensitivity to the external environment of the waveguide. Even a weak disturbance would induce a large variation of the output power of the laser. According to this feature, the Nd:YAG waveguide coated with Graphene and WSe2 layers is used as substrate for the microfluidic channel. When the microflow crosses the Nd:YAG wav…

We report an all-optical radio-frequency (RF) spectrum analyzer with a bandwidth greater than 5 terahertz (THz), based on a 50-cm long spiral waveguide in a CMOS-compatible high-index doped silica platform. By carefully mapping out the dispersion profile of the waveguides for different thicknesses, we identify the optimal design to achieve near zero dispersion in the C-band. To demonstrate the capability of the RF spectrum analyzer, we measure the optical output of a femtosecond fiber laser with an ultrafast optical RF spectrum in the terahertz regime.
Networks inside current data centers comprise a hierarchy of power-hungry electronic packet switches interconnected via optical fibers and transceivers. As the scaling of such electrically-switched networks approaches a plateau, a power-efficient solution is to implement a flat network with optical circuit switching (OCS), without electronic switches and a reduced number of transceivers due to direct links among servers. One of the promising ways of implementing OCS is by using tunable lasers and arrayed waveguide grating routers. Such an OCS-network can offer high bandwidth and low network la…

Plasmonic waveguides provide an integrated platform to develop efficient nanoscale ultrafast photonic devices. Theoretical models that describe nonlinear optical phenomena in plasmonic waveguides, usually, only incorporate bulk nonlinearities, while nonlinearities that arise from metallic constituents remained unexplored. In this work, we present a method that enables a generalized treatment of the nonlinearities present in plasmonic waveguides and use it to calculate second-harmonic generation from free electrons through a hydrodynamic nonlocal description. We report on the fabrication and characterization of composite multimode waveguide structures that consist of a stack of single-mode waveguides fabricated by ultrafast laser inscription. We explore 2 types of composite structures; those that consist of overlapping single-mode waveguides which offer the maximum effective index contrast and non overlapped structures which support multiple modes via strong evanescent coupling. We demonstrate that both types of waveguides have negligible propagation losses (to within experimental uncertainty) for light injected with focal ratios >8, which correspo…

We report on a three-waveguide electro-optic switch for compact photonic integrated circuits and data routing applications. The device features a plasmonic metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) mode for enhanced light-matter-interactions. The switching mechanism originates from a capacitor-like design where the refractive index of the active medium, Indium-Tin-Oxide, is altered via shifting the plasma frequency due to carrier accumulation inside the waveguide-based MOS structure. This light manipulation mechanism controls the transmission direction of transverse magnetic polarized light into either …
Ultra-short pulses propagating in nonlinear nanophotonic waveguides can simultaneously leverage both temporal and spatial field confinement, promising a route towards single-photon nonlinearities in an all-photonic platform.
