We propose a deterministic method to design irregular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes for binary erasure channels (BEC). Compared to the existing methods, which are based on the application of asymptomatic analysis tools such as density evolution or Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts in an optimization process, the proposed method is much simpler and faster. Through a number of examples, we demonstrate that the codes designed by the proposed method perform very closely to the best codes designed by optimization. An important property of the proposed designs is the flexibility to select the number of constituent variable node degrees P. The proposed designs include existing deterministic designs as a special case with P = N-1, where N is the maximum variable node degree. Compared to the existing deterministic designs, for a given rate and a given d > 0, the designed ensembles can have a threshold in d-neighborhood of the capacity upper bound with smaller values of P and N. They can also achieve the capacity of the BEC as N, and correspondingly P and the maximum check node degree tend to infinity.
In this paper, a simple, general-purpose and effective tool for the design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for iterative correction of bursts of erasures is presented. The design method consists in starting from the parity-check matrix of an LDPC code and developing an optimized parity-check matrix, with the same performance on the memory-less erasure channel, and suitable also for the iterative correction of single bursts of erasures. The parity-check matrix optimization is performed by an algorithm called pivot searching and swapping (PSS) algorithm, which executes permutations of c…
A generic $(r,m)$-erasure correcting set is a collection of vectors in $\bF_2^r$ which can be used to generate, for each binary linear code of codimension $r$, a collection of parity check equations that enables iterative decoding of all correctable erasure patterns of size at most $m$. That is to say, the only stopping sets of size at most $m$ for the generated parity check equations are the erasure patterns for which there is more than one manner to fill in theerasures to obtain a codeword. We give an explicit construction of generic $(r,m)$-erasure correcting sets of cardinality $\sum_{i=0}…
Based on the extended binary image of non-binary LDPC codes, we propose a method for generating extra redundant bits, such as to decreases the coding rate of a mother code. The proposed method allows for using the same decoder, regardless of how many extra redundant bits have been produced, which considerably increases the flexibility of the system without significantly increasing its complexity. Extended codes are also optimized for the binary erasure channel, by using density evolution methods. Nevertheless, the results presented in this paper can easily be extrapolated to more general chann…
Recently there has been interest in the construction of small parity check sets for iterative decoding of the Hamming code with the property that each uncorrectable (or stopping) set of size three is the support of a codeword and hence uncorrectable anyway. Here we reformulate and generalise the problem, and improve on this construction. First we show that a parity check collection that corrects all correctable erasure patterns of size m for the r-th order Hamming code (i.e, the Hamming code with codimension r) provides for all codes of codimension $r$ a corresponding ``generic'' parity check …
We introduce a thermodynamic (large deviation) formalism for computing error exponents in error-correcting codes. Within this framework, we apply the heuristic cavity method from statistical mechanics to derive the average and typical error exponents of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) under maximum-likelihood decoding.
In this paper, we study codes with locality that can recover from two erasures via a sequence of two local, parity-check computations. By a local parity-check computation, we mean recovery via a single parity-check equation associated to small Hamming weight. Earlier approaches considered recovery in parallel; the sequential approach allows us to potentially construct codes with improved minimum distance. These codes, which we refer to as locally 2-reconstructible codes, are a natural generalization along one direction, of codes with all-symbol locality introduced by Gopalan \textit{et al}, in…
In this paper, we present a novel way for solving the main problem of designing the capacity approaching irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over binary erasure channel (BEC). The proposed method is much simpler, faster, accurate and practical than other methods. Our method does not use any relaxation or any approximate solution like previous works. Our method works and finds optimal answer for any given check node degree distribution. The proposed method was implemented and it works well in practice with polynomial time complexity. As a result, we represent some degree dis…
An error-erasure channel is a simple noise model that introduces both errors and erasures. While the two types of errors can be corrected simultaneously with error-correcting codes, it is also known that any linear code allows for first correcting errors and then erasures in two-step decoding. In particular, a carefully designed parity-check matrix not only allows for separating erasures from errors but also makes it possible to efficiently correct erasures. The separating redundancy of a linear code is the number of parity-check equations in a smallest parity-check matrix that has the require…
Recently, error correcting codes in the erasure channel have drawn great attention for various applications such as distributed storage systems and wireless sensor networks, but many of their decoding algorithms are not practical because they have higher decoding complexity and longer delay. Thus, the automorphism group decoder (AGD) for cyclic codes in the erasure channel was introduced, which has good erasure decoding performance with low decoding complexity. In this paper, we propose new two-stage AGDs (TS-AGDs) for cyclic codes in the erasure channel by modifying the parity check matrix an…
This paper investigates decoding of binary linear block codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC). Of the current iterative decoding algorithms on this channel, we review the Recovery Algorithm and the Guess Algorithm. We then present a Multi-Guess Algorithm extended from the Guess Algorithm and a new algorithm -- the In-place Algorithm. The Multi-Guess Algorithm can push the limit to break the stopping sets. However, the performance of the Guess and the Multi-Guess Algorithm depend on the parity-check matrix of the code. Simulations show that we can decrease the frame error rate by several …
This paper presents new FEC codes for the erasure channel, LDPC-Band, that have been designed so as to optimize a hybrid iterative-Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding. Indeed, these codes feature simultaneously a sparse parity check matrix, which allows an efficient use of iterative LDPC decoding, and a generator matrix with a band structure, which allows fast ML decoding on the erasure channel. The combination of these two decoding algorithms leads to erasure codes achieving a very good trade-off between complexity and erasure correction capability.
Partial-MDS (PMDS) codes are a family of locally repairable codes, mainly used for distributed storage. They are defined to be able to correct any pattern of $s$ additional erasures, after a given number of erasures per locality group have occurred. This makes them also maximally recoverable (MR) codes, another class of locally repairable codes. It is known that MR codes in general, and PMDS codes in particular, exist for any set of parameters, if the field size is large enough. Moreover, some explicit constructions of PMDS codes are known, mostly (but not always) with a strong restriction on …
In this paper, a family of low-density parity-check (LDPC) degree distributions, whose decoding threshold on the binary erasure channel (BEC) admits a simple closed form, is presented. These degree distributions are a subset of the check regular distributions (i.e. all the check nodes have the same degree), and are referred to as $p$-positive distributions. It is given proof that the threshold for a $p$-positive distribution is simply expressed by $[λ'(0)ρ'(1)]^{-1}$. Besides this closed form threshold expression, the $p$-positive distributions exhibit three additional properties. First, for g…
Partial MDS (PMDS) codes are erasure codes combining local (row) correction with global additional correction of entries, while Sector-Disk (SD) codes are erasure codes that address the mixed failure mode of current RAID systems. It has been an open problem to construct general codes that have the PMDS and the SD properties, and previous work has relied on Monte-Carlo searches. In this paper, we present a general construction that addresses the case of any number of failed disks and in addition, two erased sectors. The construction requires a modest field size. This result generalizes previous…
In this paper, we design the optimal rate capacity approaching irregular Low-Density Parity-Check code ensemble over Binary Erasure Channel, by using practical Semi-Definite Programming approach. Our method does not use any relaxation or any approximate solution unlike previous works. Our simulation results include two parts; first, we present some codes and their degree distribution functions that their rates are close to the capacity. Second, the maximum achievable rate behavior of codes in our method is illustrated through some figures.
We present the construction of a new family of erasure correcting codes for distributed storage that yield low repair bandwidth and low repair complexity. The construction is based on two classes of parity symbols. The primary goal of the first class of symbols is to provide good erasure correcting capability, while the second class facilitates node repair, reducing the repair bandwidth and the repair complexity. We compare the proposed codes with other codes proposed in the literature.
We propose a refined scaling law to predict the finite-length performance in the waterfall region of spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes over the binary erasure channel. In particular, we introduce some improvements to the scaling law proposed by Olmos and Urbanke that result in a better agreement between the predicted and simulated frame error rate. We also show how the scaling law can be extended to predict the bit error rate performance.
Locality enables storage systems to recover failed nodes from small subsets of surviving nodes. The setting where nodes are partitioned into subsets, each allowing for local recovery, is well understood. In this work we consider a generalization introduced by Gopalan et al., where, viewing the codewords as arrays, constraints are imposed on the columns and rows in addition to some global constraints. Specifically, we present a generic method of adding such global parity-checks and derive new results on the set of correctable erasure patterns. Finally, we relate the set of correctable erasure p…
A new algorithm for efficient exact maximum likelihood decoding of polar codes (which may be CRC augmented), transmitted over the binary erasure channel, is presented. The algorithm applies a matrix triangulation process on a sparse polar code parity check matrix, followed by solving a small size linear system over GF(2). To implement the matrix triangulation, we apply belief propagation decoding type operations. We also indicate how this decoder can be implemented in parallel for low latency decoding. Numerical simulations are used to evaluate the performance and computational complexity of t…
In this paper, we introduce a new practical and general method for solving the main problem of designing the capacity approaching, optimal rate, irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over binary erasure channel (BEC). Compared to some new researches, which are based on application of asymptotic analysis tools out of optimization process, the proposed method is much simpler, faster, accurate and practical. Because of not using any relaxation or any approximate solution like previous works, the found answer with this method is optimal. We can construct optimal variable node deg…
A lower bound on the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding error exponent of linear block code ensembles, on the erasure channel, is developed. The lower bound turns to be positive, over an ensemble specific interval of erasure probabilities, when the ensemble weight spectral shape function tends to a negative value as the fractional codeword weight tends to zero. For these ensembles we can therefore lower bound the block-wise ML decoding threshold. Two examples are presented, namely, linear random parity-check codes and fixed-rate Raptor codes with linear random precoders. While for the former a f…
For an arbitrary degree distribution pair (DDP), we construct a sequence of low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles with girth growing logarithmically in block-length using Ramanujan graphs. When the DDP has minimum left degree at least three, we show using density evolution analysis that the expected bit-error probability of these ensembles, when passed through a binary erasure channel with erasure probability $ε$, decays as $\mathcal{O}(\exp(-c_1 n^{c_2}))$ with the block-length $n$ for positive constants $c_1$ and $c_2$, as long as $ε$ is lesser than the erasure threshold $ε_\mathrm{…
In this letter, we present a hybrid iterative decoder for non-binary low density parity check (LDPC) codes over binary erasure channel (BEC), based on which the recursion of the erasure probability is derived to design non-binary LDPC codes with convergence-optimized degree distributions. The resulting one-step decoding tree is cycle-free and achieves lower decoding complexity. Experimental studies show that the proposed convergence-optimization algorithm accelerates the convergence process by 33%.
The concept of parity check matrices of linear binary codes has been extended by Heden [9] to parity check systems of nonlinear binary codes. In the present paper we extend this concept to parity check systems of nonlinear codes over finite commutative Frobenius rings. Using parity check systems, results on how to get some fundamental properties of the codes are given. Moreover, parity check systems and its connection to characters is investigated and a MacWilliams type theorem on the distance distribution is given.
We analyze nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group for transmission over the binary erasure channel. We prove threshold saturation of the belief propagation decoding to the potential threshold, by generalizing the proof technique based on potential functions recently introduced by Yedla et al.. The existence of the potential function is also discussed for a vector sparse system in the general case, and some existence conditions are developed. We finally give density evolution and simulation results for several nonbinary SC-LDPC cod…
In this paper, we show that Quasi-Cyclic LDPC codes can efficiently accommodate the hybrid iterative/ML decoding over the binary erasure channel. We demonstrate that the quasi-cyclic structure of the parity-check matrix can be advantageously used in order to significantly reduce the complexity of the ML decoding. This is achieved by a simple row/column permutation that transforms a QC matrix into a pseudo-band form. Based on this approach, we propose a class of QC-LDPC codes with almost ideal error correction performance under the ML decoding, while the required number of row/symbol operations…
We consider communication over the binary erasure channel (BEC) using low-density parity-check (LDPC) code and belief propagation (BP) decoding. The bit error probability for infinite block length is known by density evolution and it is well known that a difference between the bit error probability at finite iteration number for finite block length $n$ and for infinite block length is asymptotically $α/n$, where $α$ is a specific constant depending on the degree distribution, the iteration number and the erasure probability. Our main result is to derive an efficient algorithm for calculating $…
We show that duals of certain low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, when used in a standard coset coding scheme, provide strong secrecy over the binary erasure wiretap channel (BEWC). This result hinges on a stopping set analysis of ensembles of LDPC codes with block length $n$ and girth $\geq 2k$, for some $k \geq 2$. We show that if the minimum left degree of the ensemble is $l_\mathrm{min}$, the expected probability of block error is $\calO(\frac{1}{n^{\lceil l_\mathrm{min} k /2 \rceil - k}})$ when the erasure probability $ε< ε_\mathrm{ef}$, where $ε_\mathrm{ef}$ depends on the degree dist…
MDS array codes are widely used in storage systems due to their computationally efficient encoding and decoding procedures. An MDS code with $r$ redundancy nodes can correct any $r$ node erasures by accessing all the remaining information in the surviving nodes. However, in practice, $e$ erasures is a more likely failure event, for $1\le e<r$. Hence, a natural question is how much information do we need to access in order to rebuild $e$ storage nodes? We define the rebuilding ratio as the fraction of remaining information accessed during the rebuilding of $e$ erasures. In our previous work we …
Consider a systematic linear code where some (local) parity symbols depend on few prescribed symbols, while other (heavy) parity symbols may depend on all data symbols. Local parities allow to quickly recover any single symbol when it is erased, while heavy parities provide tolerance to a large number of simultaneous erasures. A code as above is maximally-recoverable if it corrects all erasure patterns which are information theoretically recoverable given the code topology. In this paper we present explicit families of maximally-recoverable codes with locality. We also initiate the study of th…
We analyze the asymptotic performance of nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group, when the transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. We propose an efficient method to derive an upper bound to the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) threshold for nonbinary LDPC codes, and observe that the MAP performance of regular LDPC codes improves with the alphabet size. We then consider nonbinary SC-LDPC codes. We show that the same threshold saturation effect experienced by binary SC-LDPC codes occurs for the nonbinary codes…
In this paper we present an extended variant of low rank parity check matrix (LRPC) codes that have received significant interests in recent years. It is shown that the extension indeed yields a superfamily of LRPC codes, which are termed low row rank parity check codes. The decoding method of the proposed codes is also investigated.
In distributed storage systems that employ erasure coding, the issue of minimizing the total {\it communication} required to exactly rebuild a storage node after a failure arises. This repair bandwidth depends on the structure of the storage code and the repair strategies used to restore the lost data. Designing high-rate maximum-distance separable (MDS) codes that achieve the optimum repair communication has been a well-known open problem. In this work, we use Hadamard matrices to construct the first explicit 2-parity MDS storage code with optimal repair properties for all single node failure…
Motivated by iterative decoding techniques for the binary erasure channel Hollmann and Tolhuizen introduced and studied the notion of generic erasure correcting sets for linear codes. A generic $(r,s)$--erasure correcting set generates for all codes of codimension $r$ a parity check matrix that allows iterative decoding of all correctable erasure patterns of size $s$ or less. The problem is to derive bounds on the minimum size $F(r,s)$ of generic erasure correcting sets and to find constructions for such sets. In this paper we continue the study of these sets. We derive better lower and upper …
Based on the ideas of cyclotomic cosets, idempotents and Mattson-Solomon polynomials, we present a new method to construct GF(2^m), where m>0 cyclic low-density parity-check codes. The construction method produces the dual code idempotent which is used to define the parity-check matrix of the low-density parity-check code. An interesting feature of this construction method is the ability to increment the code dimension by adding more idempotents and so steadily decrease the sparseness of the parity-check matrix. We show that the constructed codes can achieve performance very close to the spher…
We consider communication over the binary erasure channel (BEC) using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and belief propagation (BP) decoding. For fixed numbers of BP iterations, the bit error probability approaches a limit as blocklength tends to infinity, and the limit is obtained via density evolution. On the other hand, the difference between the bit error probability of codes with blocklength $n$ and that in the large blocklength limit is asymptotically $α(ε,t)/n + Θ(n^{-2})$ where $α(ε,t)$ denotes a specific constant determined by the code ensemble considered, the number $t$ of iterat…
A decoding algorithm for $q$-ary low-density parity-check codes over the $q$-ary symmetric channel is introduced. The exchanged messages are lists of symbols from $\Fq$. A density evolution analysis for maximum list sizes $1$ and $2$ is developed. Thresholds for selected regular low-density parity-check code ensembles are computed showing gains with respect to a similar algorithm in the literature. Finite-length simulation results confirm the asymptotic analysis.
Stopping sets, and in particular their numbers and sizes, play an important role in determining the performance of iterative decoders of linear codes over binary erasure channels. In the 2004 Shannon Lecture, McEliece presented an expression for the number of stopping sets of size three for a full-rank parity-check matrix of the Hamming code. In this correspondence, we derive an expression for the number of stopping sets of any given size for the same parity-check matrix.
We propose a new type of short to moderate block-length, linear error-correcting codes, called moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) codes. The number of ones of the parity-check matrix of the codes presented is typically higher than the number of ones of the parity-check matrix of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. But, still lower than those of the parity-check matrix of classical block codes. The proposed MDPC codes are cyclic and are designed by constructing idempotents using cyclotomic cosets. The construction is simple and allows finding short block-length, high-rate codes with good m…
We study recovering parity check relations for an unknown code from intercepted bitstream received from Binary Symmetric Channel in this paper. An iterative column elimination algorithm is introduced which attempts to eliminate parity bits in codewords of noisy data. This algorithm is very practical due to low complexity and use of XOR operator. Since, the computational complexity is low, searching for the length of code and synchronization is possible. Furthermore, the Hamming weight of the parity check words are only used in threshold computation and unlike other algorithms, they have neglig…
We present simple constructions of optimal erasure-correcting LRC codes by exhibiting their parity-check matrices. When the number of local parities in a parity group plus the number of global parities is smaller than the size of the parity group, the constructed codes are optimal with a field of size at least the length of the code. We can reduce the size of the field to at least the size of the parity groups when the number of global parities equals the number of local parities in a parity group plus one.
In this paper, we develop a new channel model, which we name the $q$-ary partial erasure channel (QPEC). QPEC has a $q$-ary input, and its output is either one symbol or a set of $M$ possible values. This channel mimics situations when current/voltage levels in measurement channels are only partially known, due to high read rates or imperfect current/voltage sensing. Our investigation is concentrated on the performance of low-density parity-pheck (LDPC) codes when used over this channel, due to their low decoding complexity with iterative-decoding algorithms. We give the density evolution equa…
In this paper, we consider a few iterative decoding schemes for the joint source-channel coding of correlated sources. Specifically, we consider the joint source-channel coding of two erasure correlated sources with transmission over different erasure channels. Our main interest is in determining whether or not various code ensembles can achieve the capacity region universally over varying channel conditions. We consider two ensembles in the class of low-density generator-matrix (LDGM) codes known as Luby-Transform (LT) codes and one ensemble of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We analyz…
The focus of this paper is on linear, binary codes with locality having locality parameter $r$, that are capable of recovering from $t\geq 2$ erasures and that moreover, have short block length. Both sequential and parallel (through orthogonal parity checks) recovery is considered here. In the case of parallel repair, minimum-block-length constructions for general $t$ are discussed. In the case of sequential repair, the results include (a) extending and characterizing minimum-block-length constructions for $t=2$, (b) providing improved bounds on block length for $t=3$ as well as a general cons…
We derive a new fast convergent Density Evolution algorithm for finding optimal rate Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes used over the binary erasure channel (BEC). The fast convergence property comes from the modified Density Evolution (DE), a numerical method for analyzing the behavior of iterative decoding convergence of a LDPC code. We have used the method of [16] for designing of a LDPC code with optimal rate. This has been done for a given parity check node degree distribution, erasure probability and specified DE constraint. The fast behavior of DE and found optimal rate with this met…
The performance of iterative decoding techniques for linear block codes correcting erasures depends very much on the sizes of the stopping sets associated with the underlying Tanner graph, or, equivalently, the parity-check matrix representing the code. In this paper, we introduce the notion of dead-end sets to explicitly demonstrate this dependency. The choice of the parity-check matrix entails a trade-off between performance and complexity. We give bounds on the complexity of iterative decoders achieving optimal performance in terms of the sizes of the underlying parity-check matrices. Furth…
In this paper we study reaction and timing attacks against cryptosystems based on sparse parity-check codes, which encompass low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) codes. We show that the feasibility of these attacks is not strictly associated to the quasi-cyclic (QC) structure of the code but is related to the intrinsically probabilistic decoding of any sparse parity-check code. So, these attacks not only work against QC codes, but can be generalized to broader classes of codes. We provide a novel algorithm that, in the case of a QC code, allows recover…
The connections between variable nodes and check nodes have a great influence on the performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Inspired by the unique structure of polar code's generator matrix, we proposed a new method of constructing LDPC codes that achieves a polarization effect. The new code, named as polarized LDPC codes, is shown to achieve lower or no error floor in the binary symmetric channel (BSC)
We address the problem,`Is a local tree structure sufficient for the local optimality of message passing algorithm in low density parity check codes?'.It is shown that the answer is negative. Using this observation, we pinpoint a flaw in the proof of Theorem 1 in the paper `The Capacity of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Under Message-Passing Decoding' by Thomas J. Richardson and Rüdiger L.Urbanke\cite{RUCapacity}. We further provide a new proof of that theorem based on a different argument.
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with the parity-based approach for distributed joint source channel coding (DJSCC) with decoder side information is described in this paper. The parity-based approach is theoretical limit achievable. Different edge degree distributions are used for source variable nodes and parity variable nodes. Particularly, the codeword-averaged density evolution (CADE) is presented for asymmetrically correlated nonuniform sources over the asymmetric memoryless transmission channel. Extensive simulations show that the splitting of variable nodes can improve the coding e…
This paper generalizes the method proposed by Poulliat et al. for the determination of the optimal Galois Field coefficients of a Non-Binary LDPC parity check constraint based on the binary image of the code. Optimal, or almost-optimal, parity check coefficients are given for check degree varying from 4 to 20 and Galois Field varying from GF(64) up to GF(1024). For all given sets of coefficients, no codeword of Hamming weight two exists. A reduced complexity algorithm to compute the binary Hamming weight 3 of a parity check is proposed. When the number of sets of coefficients is too high for a…
