This paper studies the capacity of discrete-time multipath fading channels. It is assumed that the number of paths is finite, i.e., that the channel output is influenced by the present and by the L previous channel inputs. A noncoherent channel model is considered where neither transmitter nor receiver are cognizant of the fading's realization, but both are aware of its statistic. The focus is on capacity at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). In particular, the capacity pre-loglog - defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to loglog SNR as SNR tends to infinity - is studied. It is shown that, irrespective of the number paths L, the capacity pre-loglog is 1.
We investigate the multipath fading relay channel in the limit of a large bandwidth, and in the non-coherent setting, where the channel state is unknown to all terminals, including the relay and the destination. We propose a hypergraph model of the wideband multipath fading relay channel, and show that its min-cut is achieved by a non-coherent peaky frequency binning scheme. The so-obtained lower bound on the capacity of the wideband multipath fading relay channel turns out to coincide with the block-Markov lower bound on the capacity of the wideband frequency-division Gaussian (FD-AWGN) relay…
This work is devoted to the formulation and derivation of the $κ-μ$/gamma distribution which corresponds to A physical fading model. This distribution is composite and is based on the well known $κ-μ$ generalized multipath model and the gamma shadowing model. A special case of the derived model constitutes the $κ-μ$ Extreme/gamma model which accounts for severe multipath and shadowing effects. These models provide accurate characterisation of the simultaneous occurrence of multipath fading and shadowing effects. This is achieved thanks to the remarkable flexibility of their named parameters wh…
We analyse the spatial diversity of a multipath fading process for a finite region or curve in the plane. By means of the Karhunen-Loève (KL) expansion, this diversity can be characterised by the eigenvalue spectrum of the spatial autocorrelation kernel. This justifies to use the term diversity spectrum for it. We show how the diversity spectrum can be calculated for any such geometrical object and any fading statistics represented by the power azimuth spectrum (PAS). We give rigorous estimates for the accuracy of the numerically calculated eigenvalues. The numerically calculated diversity spe…
This work presents analytic solutions for a useful integral in wireless communications, which involves the Marcum $Q{-}$function in combination with an exponential function and arbitrary power terms. The derived expressions have a rather simple algebraic representation which renders them convenient both analytically and computationally. Furthermore, they can be useful in wireless communications and particularly in the context of cognitive radio communications and radar systems, where this integral is often encountered. To this end, we derive novel expressions for the probability of detection i…
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has gained a lot of popularity over the years. Due to its popularity, OFDM has been adopted as a standard in cellular technology and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication systems. To improve the bit error rate (BER) performance, forward error correction (FEC) codes are often utilized to protect signals against unknown interference and channel degradations. In this paper, we apply soft-decision FEC, more specifically polar codes and a convolutional code, to an OFDM system in a quasi-static multipath fading channel, and compare BER per…
In this paper, we propose novel low-complexity adaptive channel estimation techniques for mob ile wireless chan- n els in presence of Rayleigh fading, carrier frequency offsets (CFO) and random channel variations. We show that the selective p artial update of the estimated channel tap-weight vector offers a better trade-off between the performance and computational complexity, compared to the full update of the estimated channel tap-weight vector. We evaluate the mean-square weight error of th e proposed methods and demonstrate the usefulness of its via simulation studies.
The research analyzes the problem of capacity analysis of the multi-user massive multi-input multi-output systems with a banded correlation model. The presented study impacts the analytical statistical description with closed form expression of the ergodic sum-rate capacity of the system functioning in presence of multipath fading channel with complex Nakagami-m statistics of the complex transmission coefficients. Numerical verification of the derived expressions was performed and demonstrated excellent correspondence with simulation. The research demonstrated that the system correlation matri…
This work is devoted to the analysis of a regenerative multi-node dual-hop cooperative system over enriched multipath fading channels. Novel analytic expressions are derived for the symbol-error-rate for $M{-}$ary quadrature modulated signals in decode-and-forward relay systems over both independent and identically distributed as well as independent and non-identically distributed Nakagami${-}$q (Hoyt) fading channels. The derived expressions are based on the moment-generating-function approach and are given in closed-form in terms of the generalized Lauricella series. The offered results are …
We present an optimal decoder for physical-layer network coding (PNC) in a multipath fading channels. Previous studies on PNC have largely focused on the single path case. For PNC, multipath not only introduces inter-symbol interference (ISI), but also cross-symbol interference (Cross-SI) between signals simultaneously transmitted by multiple users. In this paper, we assume the transmitters do not have channel state information (CSI). The relay in the PNC system, however, has CSI. The relay makes use of a belief propagation (BP) algorithm to decode the multipath-distorted signals received from…
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is the most promising candidate for wideband data access. This is due to the advantage of soft limit on the number of active mobile devices. Many wireless mesh systems impose an upper bound on the BER performance which restricts the increase in number of mobile users. Capacity is further reduced in Multipath Fading Environment (MFE). This paper presents an effective method of improving the capacity of a CDMA based mesh network by managing the transmitted powers of the mobile devices and using MMSE based Multiuser Detection (MUD). The proposed scheme improve…
This work studies the capacity of multipath fading channels. A noncoherent channel model is considered, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver is cognizant of the realization of the path gains, but both are cognizant of their statistics. It is shown that if the delay spread is large in the sense that the variances of the path gains decay exponentially or slower, then capacity is bounded in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). For such channels, capacity does not tend to infinity as the SNR tends to infinity. In contrast, if the variances of the path gains decay faster than exponentially, t…
This work is devoted to the analysis of the performance of energy detection based spectrum sensing in the presence of enriched fading conditions which are distinct for the large number of multipath components and the lack of a dominant components. This type of fading conditions are characterized efficiently by the well known Nakagami${-}q$ or Hoyt distribution and the proposed analysis is carried out in the context of the area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve (AUC). Unlike the widely used probability of detection metric, the AUC is a single metric and has been shown to …
Interference is the most important issue for present wireless communication. There are various kinds of channel used in wireless communication. Here I want to show a performance analysis on the basis of two different channels - AWGN and Multipath Rayleigh fading channel. This is the comparative analysis with different kinds of modulation techniques. Here I have also measured the Bit Error Rate with respect to different modulation techniques and compare the rate in different channels. My objective is to compare the different characteristics of the transmitter and receiver for different types of…
Training over sparse multipath channels is explored. The energy allocation and the optimal shape of training signals that enable error free communications over unknown channels are characterized as a function of the channels' statistics. The performance of training is evaluated by the reduction of the mean square error of the channel estimate and by the decrease in the uncertainty of the channel. A connection between the entropy of the wideband channel and the required energy for training is shown. In addition, there is a linkage between the sparsity and the entropy of the channel to the numbe…
This work is devoted to the formulation and derivation of the $α{-}κ{-}μ{/}$gamma distribution which corresponds to a physical fading model. The proposed distribution is composite and is constituted by the $α{-}κ{-}μ$ non-linear generalized multipath model and the gamma shadowing model. It also constitute the basis for deriving the $α{-}κ{-}μ$ \textit{Extreme}${/}$gamma model which accounts for non-linear severe multipath and shadowing effects and also includes the more widely known $α{-}μ$ and $κ{-}μ$ models which includes as special cases the Rice, Weibull, Nakagami-$m$ and Rayleigh distribu…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been confirmed to provide significant performance advantages against Doppler in high-mobility scenarios. The core feature of OTFS is that the time-variant channel is converted into a non-fading 2D channel in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain so that all symbols experience the same channel gain. In now available literature, the channel is assumed to be quasi-static over an OTFS frame. As for more practical channels, the input-output relation will be time-variant as the environment or medium changes. In this paper, we analyze the characterization…
The capacity of discrete-time, noncoherent, multipath fading channels is considered. It is shown that if the variances of the path gains decay faster than exponentially, then capacity is unbounded in the transmit power.
This paper investigates the achievable information rate of phase-shift keying (PSK) over frequency non-selective Rayleigh fading channels without channel state information (CSI). The fading process exhibits general temporal correlation characterized by its spectral density function. We consider both discrete-time and continuous-time channels, and find their asymptotics at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Compared to known capacity upper bounds under peak constraints, these asymptotics usually lead to negligible rate loss in the low-SNR regime for slowly time-varying fading channels. We further…
A proof is provided of the operational achievability of $R_\mathrm{rt}$ by the recursive training scheme in \cite{zhang07:it}, for general wide-sense stationary and ergodic Rayleigh fading processes.
Extensive research has already started on 6G and beyond wireless technologies due to the envisioned new use-cases and potential new requirements for future wireless networks. Although a plethora of modern physical layer solutions have been introduced in the last few decades, it is undeniable that a level of saturation has been reached in terms of the available spectrum, adapted modulation/coding solutions and accordingly the maximum capacity. Within this context, communications through reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which enable novel and effective functionalities including wave a…
In this letter, we study the ergodic capacity of a maximum ratio combining (MRC) Rician fading channel with full channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and at the receiver. We focus on the low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) regime and we show that the capacity scales as (L Omega/(K+L)) SNR log(1/SNR), where Omega is the expected channel gain per branch, K is the Rician fading factor, and L is the number of diversity branches. We show that one-bit CSI feedback at the transmitter is enough to achieve this capacity using an on-off power control scheme. Our framework can be seen as a gene…
The capacity of non-coherent stationary Gaussian fading channels with memory under a peak-power constraint is studied in the asymptotic weak-signal regime. It is assumed that the fading law is known to both transmitter and receiver but that neither is cognizant of the fading realization. A connection is demonstrated between the asymptotic behavior of channel capacity in this regime and the asymptotic behavior of the prediction error incurred in predicting the fading process from very noisy observations of its past. This connection can be viewed as the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analog of …
We design and analyze a method to extract secret keys from the randomness inherent to wireless channels. We study a channel model for multipath wireless channel and exploit the channel diversity in generating secret key bits. We compare the key extraction methods based both on entire channel state information (CSI) and on single channel parameter such as the received signal strength indicators (RSSI). Due to the reduction in the degree-of-freedom when going from CSI to RSSI, the rate of key extraction based on CSI is far higher than that based on RSSI. This suggests that exploiting channel div…
Using an auxiliary random variable technique, we prove that binary differential phase-shift keying and binary phase-shift keying have the same asymptotic bit-error rate performance in lognormal fading channels. We also show that differential quaternary phase-shift keying is exactly 2.32 dB worse than quaternary phase-shift keying over the lognormal fading channels in high signal-to-noise ratio regimes.
In this paper, novel closed-form expressions for the level crossing rate (LCR) and average fade duration (AFD) of $κ-μ$ shadowed fading channels are derived. The new equations provide the capability of modeling the correlation between the time derivative of the shadowed dominant and multipath components of the $κ-μ$ shadowed fading envelope. Verification of the new equations is performed by reduction to a number of known special cases. It is shown that as the shadowing of the resultant dominant component decreases, the signal crosses lower threshold levels at a reduced rate. Furthermore, the i…
In slow fading scenarios, cooperation between nodes can increase the amount of diversity for communication. We study the performance limit in such scenarios by analyzing the outage capacity of slow fading relay channels. Our focus is on the low SNR and low outage probability regime, where the adverse impact of fading is greatest but so are the potential gains from cooperation. We showed that while the standard Amplify-Forward protocol performs very poorly in this regime, a modified version we called the Bursty Amplify-Forward protocol is optimal and achieves the outage capacity of the network.…
The capacity of discrete-time, non-coherent, multipath fading channels is considered. It is shown that if the delay spread is large in the sense that the variances of the path gains do not decay faster than geometrically, then capacity is bounded in the signal-to-noise ratio.
Wireless fading channels suffer from both channel fadings and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). As a result, it is impossible for fading channels to support a constant rate data stream without using buffers. In this paper, we consider information transmission over an infinite-buffer-aided block Rayleigh fading channel in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. We characterize the transmission capability of the channel in terms of stationary queue length distribution, packet delay, as well as data rate. Based on the memoryless property of the service provided by the channel in each bloc…
For multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing with zero-forcing detection (ZF), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis for Rician fading involves the cumbersome noncentral-Wishart distribution (NCWD) of the transmit sample-correlation (Gramian) matrix. An \textsl{approximation} with a \textsl{virtual} CWD previously yielded for the ZF SNR an approximate (virtual) Gamma distribution. However, analytical conditions qualifying the accuracy of the SNR-distribution approximation were unknown. Therefore, we have been attempting to exactly characterize ZF SNR for Rician fading. Our pre…
This work is devoted to the formulation and derivation of the $η{-}μ{/}$gamma and $λ{-}μ{/}$gamma distributions which correspond to physical fading models. These distributions are composite and are based on the $η-μ$ and $λ-μ$ generalized multipath models, respectively, and the gamma shadowing model. Novel analytic expressions are derived for the corresponding envelope probability density functions. Importantly, the proposed models provide accurate characterisation of the simultaneous occurrence of multipath fading and shadowing effects which is achieved thanks to the remarkable flexibility of…
The present paper is devoted to the evaluation of energy detection based spectrum sensing over different multipath fading and shadowing conditions. This is realized by means of a unified and versatile approach that is based on the particularly flexible mixture gamma distribution. To this end, novel analytic expressions are firstly derived for the probability of detection over MG fading channels for the conventional single-channel communication scenario. These expressions are subsequently employed in deriving closed-form expressions for the case of square-law combining and square-law selection …
We consider a fading channel in which a multi-antenna transmitter communicates with a multi-antenna receiver through a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that is made of $N$ reconfigurable passive scatterers impaired by phase noise. The beamforming vector at the transmitter, the combining vector at the receiver, and the phase shifts of the $N$ scatterers are optimized in order to maximize the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) at the receiver. By assuming Rayleigh fading (or line-of-sight propagation) on the transmitter-RIS link and Rayleigh fading on the RIS-receiver link, we prove that the SN…
Discrete-time Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels are considered, with no channel state information at the transmitter and receiver. The fading is assumed to be correlated in time and independent from antenna to antenna. Peak and average transmit power constraints are imposed, either on the sum over antennas, or on each individual antenna. In both cases, an upper bound and an asymptotic lower bound, as the signal-to-noise ratio approaches zero, on the channel capacity are presented. The limit of normalized capacity is identified under the sum power constraints, and, …
Energy detection is a widely used method of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio and Radio Detection And Ranging (RADAR) systems. This paper is devoted to the analytical evaluation of the performance of an energy detector over Weibull fading channels. This is a flexible fading model that has been shown capable of providing accurate characterization of multipath fading in, e.g., typical cellular radio frequency range of 800${/}$900 MHz. A novel analytic expression for the corresponding average probability of detection is derived in a simple algebraic representation which renders it convenient to…
Besides the determined construction of polar codes in BEC channels, different construction techniques have been proposed for AWGN channels. The current state-of-the-art algorithm starts with a design-SNR (or an operating SNR) and then processing is carried out to approximate each individual bit channel. However, as found in this paper, for fading channels, an operating SNR can not be directly used in approximating the bit channels. To achieve a better BER performance, the input SNR for the polar code construction in fadding channels is derived. A selection of the design-SNR for both the AWGN a…
We obtain the first term in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expansion of the capacity of fading networks where the transmitters and receivers--while fully cognizant of the fading \emph{law}--have no access to the fading \emph{realization}. This term is an integer multiple of $\log \log \textnormal{SNR}$ with the coefficient having a simple combinatorial characterization.
In this paper, we investigate the performance of energy detection-based spectrum sensing over F composite fading channels. To this end, an analytical expression for the average detection probability is firstly derived. This expression is then extended to account for collaborative spectrum sensing, square-law selection diversity reception and noise power uncertainty. The corresponding receiver operating characteristics (ROC) are analyzed for different conditions of the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), noise power uncertainty, time-bandwidth product, multipath fading, shadowing, number of di…
In this paper, we obtain asymptotic expressions for the ergodic capacity of the keyhole multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in independent and identically distributed Nakagami-$m$ fading conditions with perfect channel state information at the transmitter and receiver. We show that the low-SNR capacity of this keyhole MIMO channel scales proportionally as $\frac{\textrm{SNR}}{4} \log^2 \left(1/{\textrm{SNR}}\right)$. Our main contribution is to identify a surprising result that the low-SNR capacity of the MIMO fading channel increases in the presenc…
We analyze the performance of multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) communications systems employing spatial multiplexing and zero-forcing detection (ZF). The distribution of the ZF signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is characterized when either the intended stream or interfering streams experience Rician fading, and when the fading may be correlated on the transmit side. Previously, exact ZF analysis based on a well-known SNR expression has been hindered by the noncentrality of the Wishart distribution involved. In addition, approximation with a central-Wishart distribution has not proved consistent…
In this paper, we investigate the performance of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) with multiple antenna nodes over composite and generalized fading channels. We model the probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) using the mixture gamma (MG) distribution. We then derive a generalized closed-form expression for the probability of energy detection, which can be used efficiently for generalized multipath as well as composite (multipath and shadowing) fading channels. The composite effect of fading and shadowing scenarios in CSS is mitigated by applying an optimal fus…
The capacity of a discrete-time memoryless channel, in which successive symbols fade independently, and where the channel state information (CSI) is neither available at the transmitter nor at the receiver, is considered at low SNR. We derive a closed form expression of the optimal capacity-achieving input distribution at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and give the exact capacity of a non-coherent channel at low SNR. The derived relations allow to better understanding the capacity of non-coherent channels at low SNR and bring an analytical answer to the peculiar behavior of the optimal input …
Discrete-time Rayleigh fading single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels are considered, with no channel state information at the transmitter or the receiver. The fading is assumed to be stationary and correlated in time, but independent from antenna to antenna. Peak-power and average-power constraints are imposed on the transmit antennas. For MIMO channels, these constraints are either imposed on the sum over antennas, or on each individual antenna. For SISO channels and MIMO channels with sum power constraints, the asymptotic capacity as the peak sig…
Asymptotic comparisons of ergodic channel capacity at high and low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) are provided for several adaptive transmission schemes over fading channels with general distributions, including optimal power and rate adaptation, rate adaptation only, channel inversion and its variants. Analysis of the high-SNR pre-log constants of the ergodic capacity reveals the existence of constant capacity difference gaps among the schemes with a pre-log constant of ?1. Closed-form expressions for these high-SNR capacity difference gaps are derived, which are proportional to the SNR loss b…
This paper derives high-SNR asymptotic average error rates over fading channels by relating them to the outage probability, under mild assumptions. The analysis is based on the Tauberian theorem for Laplace-Stieltjes transforms which is grounded on the notion of regular variation, and applies to a wider range of channel distributions than existing approaches. The theory of regular variation is argued to be the proper mathematical framework for finding sufficient and necessary conditions for outage events to dominate high-SNR error rate performance. It is proved that the diversity order being $…
The parallel fading channel, which consists of finite number of subchannels, is very important, because it can be used to formulate many practical communication systems. The outage probability, on the other hand, is widely used to analyze the relationship among the communication efficiency, reliability, SNR, and channel fading. To the best of our knowledge, the previous works only studied the asymptotic outage performance of the parallel fading channel which are only valid for a large number of subchannels or high SNRs. In this paper, a unified performance metric, which we shall refer to as th…
Flat-fading channels that are correlated in time are considered under peak and average power constraints. For discrete-time channels, a new upper bound on the capacity per unit time is derived. A low SNR analysis of a full-scattering vector channel is used to derive a complimentary lower bound. Together, these bounds allow us to identify the exact scaling of channel capacity for a fixed peak to average ratio, as the average power converges to zero. The upper bound is also asymptotically tight as the average power converges to zero for a fixed peak power. For a continuous time infinite bandwidt…
We provide nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds on the sum-rate capacity of Rayleigh block-fading multiple-access channels for the setup where a priori channel state information is not available. The upper bound relies on a dual formula for channel capacity and on the assumption that the users can cooperate perfectly. The lower bound is derived assuming a noncooperative scenario, where each user employs unitary space-time modulation (independently from the other users). Numerical results show that the gap between the upper and the lower bound is small already at moderate SNR values. This sugge…
The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, non-coherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary and ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log.
This paper examines the performance of decision feedback based iterative channel estimation and multiuser detection in channel coded aperiodic DS-CDMA systems operating over multipath fading channels. First, explicit expressions describing the performance of channel estimation and parallel interference cancellation based multiuser detection are developed. These results are then combined to characterize the evolution of the performance of a system that iterates among channel estimation, multiuser detection and channel decoding. Sufficient conditions for convergence of this system to a unique fi…
Diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) was characterized asymptotically (SNR-> infinity) for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel by Zheng and Tse [1]. The SNR-asymptotic DMT overestimates the finite-SNR one [2]. This paper outlines a number of additional limitations and difficulties of the DMT framework and discusses their implications. Using the recent results on the size-asymptotic (in the number of antennas) outage capacity distribution, the finite-SNR, size-asymptotic DMT is derived for a broad class of fading distributions. The SNR range over which the finite-SNR DMT is accurately approximated …
In this paper, the bit energy requirements of training-based transmission over block Rayleigh fading channels are studied. Pilot signals are employed to obtain the minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) estimate of the channel fading coefficients. Energy efficiency is analyzed in the worst case scenario where the channel estimate is assumed to be perfect and the error in the estimate is considered as another source of additive Gaussian noise. It is shown that bit energy requirement grows without bound as the snr goes to zero, and the minimum bit energy is achieved at a nonzero snr value below which …
The effective rate of Fluctuating Beckmann (FB) fading channel is analysed. The moment generating function (MGF) of the instantaneous signal-to-noise (SNR) is used first to derive the effective rate for arbitrary values of the fading parameters in terms of the extended generalised bivariate Meijer's-$G$ function (EGBMGF). For integer valued of the multipath and shadowing severity fading parameters, the probability density function (PDF) of the instantaneous SNR is employed. To this end, simple exact mathematically tractable analytic expression is obtained. The Monte Carlo simulations and the n…
We study the throughput capacity region of the Gaussian multi-access (MAC) fading channel with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver and at the transmitters, at low power regime. We show that it has a multidimensional rectangle structure and thus is simply characterized by single user capacity points. More specifically, we show that at low power regime, the boundary surface of the capacity region shrinks to a single point corresponding to the sum rate maximizer and that the coordinates of this point coincide with single user capacity bounds. Inspired by this result, we propos…
We propose a technique to derive upper bounds on Gallager's cost-constrained random coding exponent function. Applying this technique to the non-coherent peak-power or average-power limited discrete time memoryless Ricean fading channel, we obtain the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expansion of this channel's cut-off rate. At high SNR the gap between channel capacity and the cut-off rate approaches a finite limit. This limit is approximately 0.26 nats per channel-use for zero specular component (Rayleigh) fading and approaches 0.39 nats per channel-use for very large specular components. We …
We analyze the impact of arbitrary dependence between the forward and backward links in backscatter communication systems. Specifically, we quantify the effect of positive and negative dependence between these fading links on channel capacity, using Copula theory. The benefits of this approach are highlighted over the classical framework of linear dependence based on Pearson's correlation coefficient, which is also analyzed. Results show that for a fixed transmit power budget, capacity grows with positive dependence as well as with fading severity in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.…
We study the information rates of non-coherent, stationary, Gaussian, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) flat-fading channels that are achievable with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation. In particular, we analyse the behaviour of these achievable rates in the limit as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. We demonstrate that nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation achieves the capacity pre-log - which is defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to the logarithm of SNR as the SNR tends to infinity - of non-coherent multiple-i…
Unlike the AWGN (additive white gaussian noise) channel, fading channels suffer from random channel gains besides the additive Gaussian noise. As a result, the instantaneous channel capacity varies randomly along time, which makes it insufficient to characterize the transmission capability of a fading channel using data rate only. In this paper, the transmission capability of a buffer-aided block Rayleigh fading channel is examined by a constant rate input data stream, and reflected by several parameters such as the average queue length, stationary queue length distribution, packet delay and o…
We consider general multi-antenna fading channels with coarsely quantized outputs, where the channel is unknown to the transmitter and receiver. This analysis is of interest in the context of sensor network communication where low power and low cost are key requirements (e.g. standard IEEE 802.15.4 applications). This is also motivated by highly energy constrained communications devices where sampling the signal may be more energy consuming than processing or transmitting it. Therefore the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for such applications should be low-resolution, in order to reduce th…
