The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, non-coherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary and ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log.
For delay-limited communication over block-fading channels, the difference between the ergodic capacity and the maximum achievable expected rate for coding over a finite number of coherent blocks represents a fundamental measure of the penalty incurred by the delay constraint. This paper introduces a notion of worst-case expected-capacity loss. Focusing on the slow-fading scenario (one-block delay), the worst-case additive and multiplicative expected-capacity losses are precisely characterized for the point-to-point fading channel. Extension to the problem of writing on fading paper is also co…
The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, noncoherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary & ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function and whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log. The assumption that the law of the fading process has no mass point at zero is essential in the sense that th…
An analytically tractable model for Gaussian multiuser channels with fading is studied, and the capacity region of this model is found to be a good approximation of the capacity region of the original Gaussian network. This work extends the existing body of work on deterministic models for Gaussian multiuser channels to include the physical phenomenon of fading. In particular, it generalizes these results to a unicast, multiple node network setting with fading.
This paper presents outerbounds for the two-user Gaussian fading broadcast channel. These outerbounds are based on Costa's entropy power inequality (Costa-EPI) and are formulated mathematically as a feasibility problem. For classes of the two-user Gaussian fading broadcast channel where the outerbound is found to have a feasible solution, we find conditions under which a suitable inner and outer bound meet. For all such cases, this paper provides a partial characterization of the capacity region of the Gaussian two-user fading broadcast channel.
Unreliable fading wireless channels are the main challenge for strict performance guarantees in mobile communications. Diversity schemes including massive number of antennas, huge spectrum bands and multi-connectivity links are applied to improve the outage performance. The success of these approaches relies heavily on the joint distribution of the underlying fading channels. In this work, we consider the $\varepsilon$-outage capacity of slowly fading wireless diversity channels and provide lower and upper bounds for fixed marginal distributions of the individual channels. This answers the que…
The mutual information of a discrete time memoryless Rayleigh fading channel is considered, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver has the knowledge of the channel state information except the fading statistics. We present the mutual information of this channel in closed form when the input distribution is complex Gaussian, and derive a lower bound in terms of the capacity of the corresponding non fading channel and the capacity when the perfect channel state information is known at the receiver.
This paper focuses on the analysis of average Gaussian error probabilities in certain fading channels, i.e. we are interested in E[Q((p γ)^(1/2))] where Q(.) is the Gaussian Q-function, p is a positive real number and γ is a nonnegative random variable. We present a unified analysis of the average Gaussian error probability, derive a compact expression in terms of the Lauricella FD^(n) function that is applicable to a broad class of fading channels, and discuss the relation of this expression and expressions of this type recently appeared in literature. As an intermediate step in our derivatio…
In this paper, we investigate upper and lower bounds on the capacity of two-user fading broadcast channels where one of the users has a constant (non-fading) channel. We use the Costa entropy power inequality (EPI) along with an optimization framework to derive upper bounds on the sum-capacity and superposition coding to obtain lower bounds on the sum-rate for this channel. For this fading broadcast channel where one channel is constant, we find that the upper and lower bounds meet under special cases, and in general, we show that the achievable sum-rate comes within a constant of the outer bo…
An encoder, subject to a rate constraint, wishes to describe a Gaussian source under squared error distortion. The decoder, besides receiving the encoder's description, also observes side information consisting of uncompressed source symbol subject to slow fading and noise. The decoder knows the fading realization but the encoder knows only its distribution. The rate-distortion function that simultaneously satisfies the distortion constraints for all fading states was derived by Heegard and Berger. A layered encoding strategy is considered in which each codeword layer targets a given fading st…
We study the information rates of non-coherent, stationary, Gaussian, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) flat-fading channels that are achievable with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation. In particular, we analyse the behaviour of these achievable rates in the limit as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. We demonstrate that nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation achieves the capacity pre-log - which is defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to the logarithm of SNR as the SNR tends to infinity - of non-coherent multiple-i…
This paper considers the asymptotic behavior of two-source block-fading single-antenna Gaussian interference channels in the high-SNR regime by means of the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff. We consider a general setting where the users and the average channel gains are not restricted to be symmetric. Our results are not just extensions of previous results for symmetric networks, as our setting covers scenarios that are not possible under the symmetric assumption, such as the case of "mixed" interference, i.e., when difference sources have different distances from their intended receivers. We d…
We consider a peak-power-limited single-antenna block-stationary Gaussian fading channel where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows the channel state information, but both know the channel statistics. This model subsumes most previously studied Gaussian fading models. We first compute the asymptotic channel capacity in the high SNR regime and show that the behavior of channel capacity depends critically on the channel model. For the special case where the fading process is symbol-by-symbol stationary, we also reveal a fundamental interplay between the codeword length, communication r…
User selection (US) with Zero-forcing beamforming is considered in fast fading Gaussian vector broadcast channels with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. A novel criterion for US is proposed, which depends on both CSI and the data symbols, while conventional criteria only depend on CSI. Since the optimization of US based on the proposed criterion is infeasible, a greedy algorithm of data-dependent US is proposed to perform the optimization approximately. An overhead issue arises in fast fading channels: On every update of US, the transmitter might inform each user whet…
Network life time maximization is becoming an important design goal in wireless sensor networks. Energy harvesting has recently become a preferred choice for achieving this goal as it provides near perpetual operation. We study such a sensor node with an energy harvesting source and compare various architectures by which the harvested energy is used. We find its Shannon capacity when it is transmitting its observations over a fading AWGN channel with perfect/no channel state information provided at the transmitter. We obtain an achievable rate when there are inefficiencies in energy storage an…
This paper considers the distributed information bottleneck (D-IB) problem for a primitive Gaussian diamond channel with two relays and Rayleigh fading. Due to the bottleneck constraint, it is impossible for the relays to inform the destination node of the perfect channel state information (CSI) in each realization. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node knows the CSI and the relays can cooperate with each other, and also three achievable schemes with simple symbol-by-symbol relay processing and compression. Numerical results show that …
This paper considers an arbitrarily-varying fading channel consisting of one transmitter, one receiver and an arbitrarily varying adversary. The channel is assumed to have additive Gaussian noise and fast fading of the gain from the legitimate user to the receiver. We study four variants of the problem depending on whether the transmitter and/or adversary have access to the fading gains; we assume the receiver always knows the fading gains. In two variants the adversary does not have access to the gains, we show that the capacity corresponds to the capacity of a standard point-to-point fading …
We report the similarity between the Nakagami-m fading distribution and the three Gaussian ensembles of random matrix theory. We provide a brief review of random matrix theory and wireless fading. We show that the Nakagami-m distribution serves as mapping between the three ensembles. The statistics of the wireless fading amplitude, as modeled by Nakagami-m distribution, provide a rare example of a classically chaotic system that exhibits a transition between the Gaussian orthogonal, Gaussian unitary, and Gaussian symplectic ensembles of random matrix theory.
Upper bounds on the capacity of vector Gaussian channels affected by fading are derived under peak amplitude constraints at the input. The focus is on constraint regions that can be decomposed in a Cartesian product of sub-regions. This constraint models a transmitter configuration employing a number of power amplifiers less than or equal to the total number of transmitting antennas. In general, the power amplifiers feed distinct subsets of the transmitting antennas and partition the input in independent subspaces. Two upper bounds are derived: The first one is suitable for high signal-to-nois…
Without assuming any knowledge on source's codebook and its output signals, we formulate a Gaussian jamming problem in block fading channels as a two-player zero sum game. The outage probability is adopted as an objective function, over which transmitter aims at minimization and jammer aims at maximization by selecting their power control strategies. Optimal power control strategies for each player are obtained under both short-term and long-term power constraints. For the latter case, we first prove the non-existence of a Nash equilibrium, and then provide a complete solution for both maxmin …
During the last decade, it has been well understood that communication over multiple antennas can increase linearly the multiplexing capacity gain and provide large spectral efficiency improvements. However, the majority of studies in this area were carried out ignoring cochannel interference. Only a small number of investigations have considered cochannel interference, but even therein simple channel models were employed, assuming identically distributed fading coefficients. In this paper, a generic model for a multi-antenna channel is presented incorporating four impairments, namely additive…
It has been shown recently that coding for the Gaussian Wiretap Channel can be done with nested lattices. A fine lattice intended to the legitimate user must be designed as a usual lattice code for the Gaussian Channel, while a coarse lattice is added to introduce confusion at the eavesdropper, whose theta series must be minimized. We present a design criterion for both the fine and coarse lattice to obtain wiretap lattice codes for the Rayleigh fading Wiretap Channel.
In this paper we consider the secure transmission over the fast fading multiple antenna Gaussian broadcast channels with confidential messages (FMGBC-CM), where a multiple-antenna transmitter sends independent confidential messages to two users with information theoretic secrecy and only the statistics of the receivers' channel state information are known at the transmitter. We first use the same marginal property of the FMGBC-CM to classify the non-trivial cases, i.e., those not degraded to the common wiretap channels. We then derive the achievable rate region for the FMGBC-CM by solving the …
The performance of existing coded caching schemes is sensitive to the worst channel quality, a problem which is exacerbated when communicating over fading channels. In this paper, we address this limitation in the following manner: in short-term, we allow transmissions to subsets of users with good channel quality, avoiding users with fades, while in long-term we ensure fairness among users. Our online scheme combines (i) the classical decentralized coded caching scheme \cite{maddah2013decentralized} with (ii) joint scheduling and power control for the fading broadcast channel, as well as (iii…
In this paper, fading Gaussian multiuser channels are considered. If the channel is perfectly known to the transmitter, capacity has been established for many cases in which the channels may satisfy certain information theoretic orders such as degradedness or strong/very strong interference. Here, we study the case when only the statistics of the channels are known at the transmitter which is an open problem in general. The main contribution of this paper is the following: First, we introduce a framework to classify random fading channels based on their joint distributions by leveraging three …
Except for a few simple digital modulation techniques, derivation of average bit error probability over fading channels is difficult and is an involved process. In this letter, curve fitting technique has been employed to express bit error probability over AWGN of any digital modulation scheme in terms of a simple Gaussian function. Using this Gaussian function, a generalized closed form expression for computing average probability of bit error over Rayleigh fading channels has been derived. Excellent agreement has been found between error probabilities computed with our method and the rigorou…
We investigate the problem of common randomness (CR) generation from discrete correlated sources aided by one-way communication over single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) slow fading channels with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), arbitrary state distribution and with channel state information available at the receiver side (CSIR). We completely solve the problem by first characterizing the channel outage capacity of MIMO slow fading channels for arbitrary state distribution. For this purpose, we also provide an achievable rate for a specific compound MIMO Gaussian channel. Sec…
The design of lattice coset codes for wiretap channels is considered. Bounds on the eavesdropper's correct decoding probability and information leakage are first revisited. From these bounds, it is explicit that both the information leakage and error probability are controlled by the average flatness factor of the eavesdropper's lattice, which we further interpret geometrically. It is concluded that the minimization of the (average) flatness factor of the eavesdropper's lattice leads to the study of well-rounded lattices, which are shown to be among the optimal in order to achieve these minima…
An upper bound on the capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian fading channels is derived under peak amplitude constraints. The upper bound is obtained borrowing concepts from convex geometry and it extends to MIMO channels notable results from the geometric analysis on the capacity of scalar Gaussian channels. Relying on a sphere packing argument and on the renowned Steiner's formula, the proposed upper bound depends on the intrinsic volumes of the constraint region, i.e., functionals defining a measure of the geometric features of a convex body. The tightness of the bound i…
We present a novel relationship between the distribution of circular and non-circular complex Gaussian random variables. Specifically, we show that the distribution of the squared norm of a non-circular complex Gaussian random variable, usually referred to as squared Hoyt distribution, can be constructed from a conditional exponential distribution. From this fundamental connection we introduce a new approach, the Hoyt transform method, that allows to analyze the performance of a wireless link under Hoyt (Nakagami-q) fading in a very simple way. We illustrate that many performance metrics for H…
There are currently a plurality of capacity theories of fading channels, including the ergodic capacity for fast fading channels and outage capacity for slow fading channels. However, analyses show that the outage capacity is a misconception. In this paper we use the 1st order Gaussian-Markov process with coherence coefficient $α$ as the unified model for slow and fast fading channels, the capacity of which without channel side information is studied. We demonstrate that the information rate of a fading channel has a structure that the rate of user message is always accompanied by a rate of ch…
The "Writing onto Fast Fading Dirt" (WFFD) channel is investigated to study the effects of partial channel knowledge on the capacity of the "writing on dirty paper" channel. The WFFD channel is the Gel'fand-Pinsker channel in which the output is obtained as the sum of the input, white Gaussian noise and a fading-times-state term. The fading-times-state term is equal to the element-wise product of the channel state sequence, known only at the transmitter, and a fast fading process, known only at the receiver. We consider the case of Gaussian distributed channel states and derive an approximate …
Delay constrained linear transmission (LT) strategies are considered for the transmission of composite Gaussian measurements over an additive white Gaussian noise fading channel under an average power constraint. If the channel state information (CSI) is known by both the encoder and decoder, the optimal LT scheme in terms of the average mean-square error distortion is characterized under a strict delay constraint, and a graphical interpretation of the optimal power allocation strategy is presented. Then, for general delay constraints, two LT strategies are proposed based on the solution to a …
A Han-Kobayashi based achievable scheme is presented for ergodic fading two-user Gaussian interference channels (IFCs) with perfect channel state information at all nodes and Gaussian codebooks with no time-sharing. Using max-min optimization techniques, it is shown that jointly coding across all states performs at least as well as separable coding for the sub-classes of uniformly weak (every sub-channel is weak) and hybrid (mix of strong and weak sub-channels that do not achieve the interference-free sum-capacity) IFCs. For the uniformly weak IFCs, sufficient conditions are obtained for which…
A modification is proposed for the formula known from the literature that characterizes the boundary of the capacity region of Gaussian multiaccess fading channels. The modified version takes into account potentially negative arguments of the cumulated density function that would affect the accuracy of the numerical capacity results.
This study will present the design, construction and implementation of Algebraic Geometric Irregular Block Turbo Codes (AGIBTCs). Furthermore, we will evaluate its performance over fast fading channels using different modulation schemes (BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM and 64QAM). The idea behind the design of AGIBTC is to overcome the high system complexity of Algebraic Geometric Block Turbo Codes (AGBTCs) while maintaining a high Bit-Error Rate (BER) performance. This design is inspired by the idea of unequal protection of information symbols which is the core of IBTCs. Our experiments conducted over the …
In this paper, the bit energy requirements of training-based transmission over block Rayleigh fading channels are studied. Pilot signals are employed to obtain the minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) estimate of the channel fading coefficients. Energy efficiency is analyzed in the worst case scenario where the channel estimate is assumed to be perfect and the error in the estimate is considered as another source of additive Gaussian noise. It is shown that bit energy requirement grows without bound as the snr goes to zero, and the minimum bit energy is achieved at a nonzero snr value below which …
We study the potential employment of improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) in full-duplex relaying (FDR) with non-negligible residual self-interference (RSI) under Nakagami- m fading. IGS is recently shown to outperform traditional proper Gaussian signaling (PGS) in several interference-limited settings. In this work, IGS is employed as an attempt to alleviate RSI. We use two performance metrics, namely, the outage probability and the ergodic rate. First, we provide upper and lower bounds for the system performance in terms of the relay transmit power and circularity coefficient, a measure of the …
The focus of this paper is an information-theoretic study of retransmission protocols for reliable packet communication under a secrecy constraint. The hybrid automatic retransmission request (HARQ) protocol is revisited for a block-fading wire-tap channel, in which two legitimate users communicate over a block-fading channel in the presence of a passive eavesdropper who intercepts the transmissions through an independent block-fading channel. In this model, the transmitter obtains a 1-bit ACK/NACK feedback from the legitimate receiver via an error-free public channel. Both reliability and con…
We derive new upper and lower bounds on the fading number of multiple-input single-output (MISO) fading channels of general (not necessarily Gaussian) regular law with spatial and temporal memory. The fading number is the second term, after the double-logarithmic term, of the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expansion of channel capacity. In case of an isotropically distributed fading vector it is proven that the upper and lower bound coincide, i.e., the general MISO fading number with memory is known precisely. The upper and lower bounds show that a type of beam-forming is asymptotically opti…
The fading broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC) is investigated, where a source node has common information for two receivers (receivers 1 and 2), and has confidential information intended only for receiver 1. The confidential information needs to be kept as secret as possible from receiver 2. The channel state information (CSI) is assumed to be known at both the transmitter and the receivers. The secrecy capacity region is first established for the parallel Gaussian BCC, and the optimal source power allocations that achieve the boundary of the secrecy capacity region are derived…
The optimal power allocation that maximizes the secrecy capacity of block fading Gaussian (BF-Gaussian) networks with causal channel state information (CSI), M-block delay tolerance and a frame based power constraint is examined. In particular, we formulate the secrecy capacity maximization as a dynamic program. We propose suitable linear approximations of the secrecy capacity density in the low SNR, the high SNR and the intermediate SNR regimes, according to the overall available power budget. Our findings indicate that when the available power resources are very low (low SNR case) the optima…
In this work, we consider a discrete-time stationary Rayleigh flat-fading channel with unknown channel state information at transmitter and receiver. The law of the channel is presumed to be known to the receiver. In addition, we assume the power spectral density (PSD) of the fading process to be compactly supported. For i.i.d. zero-mean proper Gaussian input distributions, we investigate the achievable rate. One of the main contributions is the derivation of two new upper bounds on the achievable rate with zero-mean proper Gaussian input symbols. The first one holds only for the special case …
In this paper we introduce a novel performance analysis of the $η$-$μ$ generalized radio fading channels with integer value of the $μ$ fading parameter, i.e. with even number of multipath clusters. This fading model includes other fading models as special cases such as the Nakagami-m, the Hoyt, and the Rayleigh. We obtain novel unified and generic simple closed-form expressions for the average bit error rates and ergodic channel capacity in the additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN), which includes the additive Gaussian, the gamma, the Laplacian, and the impulsive noise as special c…
As shown by Médard, the capacity of fading channels with imperfect channel-state information (CSI) can be lower-bounded by assuming a Gaussian channel input $X$ with power $P$ and by upper-bounding the conditional entropy $h(X|Y,\hat{H})$ by the entropy of a Gaussian random variable with variance equal to the linear minimum mean-square error in estimating $X$ from $(Y,\hat{H})$. We demonstrate that, using a rate-splitting approach, this lower bound can be sharpened: by expressing the Gaussian input $X$ as the sum of two independent Gaussian variables $X_1$ and $X_2$ and by applying Médard's lo…
The impact of phase fading on the classical Costa dirty paper coding channel is studied. We consider a variation of this channel model in which the amplitude of the interference sequence is known at the transmitter while its phase is known at the receiver. Although the capacity of this channel has already been established, it is expressed using an auxiliary random variable and as the solution of a maximization problem. To circumvent the difficulty evaluating capacity, we derive alternative inner and outer bounds and show that the two expressions are to within a finite distance. This provide an…
Energy detection is a reliable non-coherent signal processing technology of spectrum sensing of cognitive radio networks, which thanks to its low complexity, no requirement of priori received information and fast sensing ability etc. Since the excellent performance of energy detection would be actually affected by physical multipath fading, this paper is concentrating on characteristics analysis of energy detection over composite shadowed fading channels. The small-scale and line-of-sight fading distribution consists of particular examples such as Rayleigh, Hoyt, Nakagami-m and one sided Gauss…
We investigate the problem of message transmission and the problem of common randomness (CR) generation over single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) slow fading channels with average input power constraint, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), arbitrary state distribution and with complete channel state information available at the receiver side (CSIR). First, we derive a lower and an upper bound on the outage transmission capacity of MIMO slow fading channels for arbitrary state distribution and show that the bounds coincide except possibly at the points of discontinuity of the out…
Considerable efforts have been devoted to statistical modeling and the characterization of channels in a range of statistical models for fading channels. In this paper, we consider a unified approach to model wireless channels by the mixture of Gaussian (MoG) distribution. Simulations provided have shown the new probability density function to accurately characterize multipath fading as well as composite fading channels. We utilize the well known expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate the parameters of the MoG model and further utilize the Kullback-Leibler divergence and the mean squar…
We study irregular binary turbo codes over non-ergodic block-fading channels. We first propose an extension of channel multiplexers initially designed for regular turbo codes. We then show that, using these multiplexers, irregular turbo codes that exhibit a small decoding threshold over the ergodic Gaussian-noise channel perform very close to the outage probability on block-fading channels, from both density evolution and finite-length perspectives.
Partial decoding has the potential to achieve a larger capacity region than full decoding in two-way relay (TWR) channels. Existing partial decoding realizations are however designed for Gaussian channels and with a static physical layer network coding (PLNC). In this paper, we propose a new solution for joint network coding and channel decoding at the relay, called pairwise check decoding (PCD), for low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded TWR system over block fading channels. The main idea is to form a check relationship table (check-relation-tab) for the superimposed LDPC coded packet pair in…
This paper introduces a new and unified bit error rates performance analysis of space-time block codes (STBC) deployed in wireless systems with spatial diversity in generalized shadowed fading and noise scenarios. Specifically, we derive a simple and a very accurate approximate expressions for the average error rates of coherent modulation schemes in generalized $η-μ$ and $κ-μ$ shadowed fading channels with multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. The noise in the network is assumed to be modeled using the additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN), which encompasses the classical…
A classical result in Information Theory states that the Gaussian noise is the worst-case additive noise in point-to-point channels, meaning that, for a fixed noise variance, the Gaussian noise minimizes the capacity of an additive noise channel. In this paper, we significantly generalize this result and show that the Gaussian noise is also the worst-case additive noise in wireless networks with additive noises that are independent from the transmit signals. More specifically, we show that, if we fix the noise variance at each node, then the capacity region with Gaussian noises is a subset of …
A fading broadcast channel is considered where the transmitter employs two antennas and each of the two receivers employs a single receive antenna. It is demonstrated that even if the realization of the fading is precisely known to the receivers, the high signal-to-noise (SNR) throughput is greatly reduced if, rather than knowing the fading realization \emph{precisely}, the trasmitter only knows the fading realization \emph{approximately}. The results are general and are not limited to memoryless Gaussian fading.
This paper proves that a family of number field lattice codes simultaneously achieves a constant gap to capacity in Rayleigh fast fading and Gaussian channels. The key property in the proof is the existence of infinite towers of Hilbert class fields with bounded root discriminant. The gap to capacity of the proposed families is determined by the root discriminant. The comparison between the Gaussian and fading case reveals that in Rayleigh fading channels the normalized minimum product distance plays an analogous role to the Hermite invariant in Gaussian channels.
We investigate the impact of multiple primary users (PUs) and fading on the spectrum sensing of a classical energy detector (ED). Specifically, we present novel closed-form expressions for the false-alarm and detection probabilities in a multiple PUs environment, assuming Nakagami-m fading and complex Gaussian PUs transmitted signals. The results reveal the importance of taking into consideration the wireless environment, when evaluating the ED spectrum sensing performance and selecting the ED threshold.
