We derive new upper and lower bounds on the fading number of multiple-input single-output (MISO) fading channels of general (not necessarily Gaussian) regular law with spatial and temporal memory. The fading number is the second term, after the double-logarithmic term, of the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expansion of channel capacity.
In case of an isotropically distributed fading vector it is proven that the upper and lower bound coincide, i.e., the general MISO fading number with memory is known precisely.
The upper and lower bounds show that a type of beam-forming is asymptotically optimal.
The capacity of non-coherent stationary Gaussian fading channels with memory under a peak-power constraint is studied in the asymptotic weak-signal regime. It is assumed that the fading law is known to both transmitter and receiver but that neither is cognizant of the fading realization. A connection is demonstrated between the asymptotic behavior of channel capacity in this regime and the asymptotic behavior of the prediction error incurred in predicting the fading process from very noisy observations of its past. This connection can be viewed as the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analog of …
In this paper, transmission over time-selective, flat fading relay channels is studied. It is assumed that channel fading coefficients are not known a priori. Transmission takes place in two phases: network training phase and data transmission phase. In the training phase, pilot symbols are sent and the receivers employ single-pilot MMSE estimation or noncausal Wiener filter to learn the channel. Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF) techniques are considered in the data transmission phase and achievable rate expressions are obtained. The training period, and data and training p…
The memoryless noncoherent single-input single-output (SISO) Rayleigh-fading channel is considered. Closed-form expressions for the mutual information between the output and the input of this channel when the input magnitude distribution is discrete and restricted to having two mass points are derived, and it is subsequently shown how these expressions can be used to obtain closed-form expressions for the capacity of this channel for signal to noise ratio (SNR) values of up to approximately 0 dB, and a tight capacity lower bound for SNR values between 0 dB and 10 dB. The expressions for the ch…
A new approach toward the noncoherent communications over the time varying fading channels is presented. In this approach, the relationship between the input signal space and the output signal space of a correlatively changing fading channel is shown to be a nonlinear mapping between manifolds of different dimensions. Studying this mapping, it is shown that using nonlinear decoding algorithms for single input-multiple output (SIMO) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, extra numbers of degrees of freedom (DOF) are available. We call them the nonlinear degrees of freedom.
The information that can be transmitted through a wireless channel, with multiple-antenna equipped transmitter and receiver, is crucially influenced by the channel behavior as well as by the structure of the input signal. We characterize in closed form the probability density function (pdf) of the output of MIMO block-fading channels, for an arbitrary SNR value. Our results provide compact expressions for such output statistics, paving the way to a more detailed analytical information-theoretic exploration of communications in presence of block fading. The analysis is carried out assuming two …
This paper considers delay-limited communication over quasi-static fading channels under a long-term power constraint. A sequence of length-$n$ delay-limited codes for a quasi-static fading channel is said to be capacity-achieving if the codes achieve the delay-limited capacity, which is defined to be the maximum rate achievable by delay-limited codes. The delay-limited capacity is sometimes referred to as the zero-outage capacity in wireless communications. The delay-limited capacity is the appropriate choice of performance measure for delay-sensitive applications such as voice and video over…
The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, noncoherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary & ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function and whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log. The assumption that the law of the fading process has no mass point at zero is essential in the sense that th…
We propose iterative detection and decoding (IDD) algorithms with Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems operating in block-fading and fast Rayleigh fading channels. Soft-input soft-output minimum mean-square error receivers with successive interference cancellation are considered. In particular, we devise a novel strategy to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of IDD schemes, which takes into account the soft \textit{a posteriori} output of the decoder in a block-fading channel when Root-Check LDPC codes are used. A MIMO IDD receiver w…
In this paper, the second-order statistics of the instantaneous mutual information are studied, in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels, assuming general non-isotropic scattering environments. Specifically, first the autocorrelation function, correlation coefficient, level crossing rate, and the average outage duration of the instantaneous mutual information are investigated in single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Closed-form exact expressions are derived, as well as accurate approximations in low- and high-SNR regimes. Then, the results are extended to multiple-input single-output and …
A major performance degrading factor in free space optical communication (FSO) systems is atmospheric turbulence. Spatial diversity techniques provide a promising approach to mitigate turbulence-induced fading. In this paper, we study the error rate performance of FSO links with spatial diversity over atmospheric turbulence channels described by the Double Generalized Gamma distribution which is a new generic statistical model covering all turbulence conditions. We assume intensity modulation/direct detection with on-off keying and present the BER performance of single-input multiple-output (S…
We propose a simple and accurate method to evaluate the outage probability at the output of arbitrarily fading L-branch diversity combining receiver. The method is based on the saddlepoint approximation, which only requires the knowledge of the moment generating functions of the signal-to-noise ratio at the output of each diversity branch. In addition, we show that the obtained results reduce to closed-form expressions in many particular cases of practical interest. Numerical results illustrate a very high accuracy of the proposed method for practical outage values and for a large mixture of f…
The capacity of a discrete-time memoryless channel, in which successive symbols fade independently, and where the channel state information (CSI) is neither available at the transmitter nor at the receiver, is considered at low SNR. We derive a closed form expression of the optimal capacity-achieving input distribution at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and give the exact capacity of a non-coherent channel at low SNR. The derived relations allow to better understanding the capacity of non-coherent channels at low SNR and bring an analytical answer to the peculiar behavior of the optimal input …
The use of channel output feedback to improve the reliability of fading channels has received scant attention in the literature. In most work on feedback for fading channels, only channel state information (CSI) feedback has been exploited for coding at the transmitter. In this work, the design of a coding scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading systems with channel output and channel state feedback at the transmitter is considered. Under the assumption of additive white Gaussian noise and an independent and identically distributed fading process, a simple linear coding strateg…
We propose an Iterative Detection and Decoding (IDD) scheme with Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems for block-fading $F = 2$ and fast fading Rayleigh channels. An IDD receiver with soft information processing that exploits the code structure and the behaviour of the log likelihood ratios (LLR)'s is developed. Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) with Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) and with Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) schemes are considered. The soft \textit{a posteriori} output of the decoder in a block-fading channel wi…
The capacity of peak-power limited, single-antenna, non-coherent, flat-fading channels with memory is considered. The emphasis is on the capacity pre-log, i.e., on the limiting ratio of channel capacity to the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as the SNR tends to infinity. It is shown that, among all stationary and ergodic fading processes of a given spectral distribution function whose law has no mass point at zero, the Gaussian process gives rise to the smallest pre-log.
We consider general multi-antenna fading channels with coarsely quantized outputs, where the channel is unknown to the transmitter and receiver. This analysis is of interest in the context of sensor network communication where low power and low cost are key requirements (e.g. standard IEEE 802.15.4 applications). This is also motivated by highly energy constrained communications devices where sampling the signal may be more energy consuming than processing or transmitting it. Therefore the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for such applications should be low-resolution, in order to reduce th…
The mutual information of a discrete time memoryless Rayleigh fading channel is considered, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver has the knowledge of the channel state information except the fading statistics. We present the mutual information of this channel in closed form when the input distribution is complex Gaussian, and derive a lower bound in terms of the capacity of the corresponding non fading channel and the capacity when the perfect channel state information is known at the receiver.
Discrete-time Rayleigh fading single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels are considered, with no channel state information at the transmitter or the receiver. The fading is assumed to be stationary and correlated in time, but independent from antenna to antenna. Peak-power and average-power constraints are imposed on the transmit antennas. For MIMO channels, these constraints are either imposed on the sum over antennas, or on each individual antenna. For SISO channels and MIMO channels with sum power constraints, the asymptotic capacity as the peak sig…
We present nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds on the maximum coding rate achievable when transmitting short packets over a Rician memoryless block-fading channel for a given requirement on the packet error probability. We focus on the practically relevant scenario in which there is no \emph{a priori} channel state information available at the transmitter and at the receiver. An upper bound built upon the min-max converse is compared to two lower bounds: the first one relies on a noncoherent transmission strategy in which the fading channel is not estimated explicitly at the receiver; the sec…
A fading broadcast channel is considered where the transmitter employs two antennas and each of the two receivers employs a single receive antenna. It is demonstrated that even if the realization of the fading is precisely known to the receivers, the high signal-to-noise (SNR) throughput is greatly reduced if, rather than knowing the fading realization \emph{precisely}, the trasmitter only knows the fading realization \emph{approximately}. The results are general and are not limited to memoryless Gaussian fading.
We study the information rates of non-coherent, stationary, Gaussian, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) flat-fading channels that are achievable with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation. In particular, we analyse the behaviour of these achievable rates in the limit as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. We demonstrate that nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation achieves the capacity pre-log - which is defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to the logarithm of SNR as the SNR tends to infinity - of non-coherent multiple-i…
Linear precoding and post-processing schemes are ubiquitous in wireless multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) settings, due to their reduced complexity with respect to optimal strategies. Despite their popularity, the performance analysis of linear MIMO receivers is mostly not available in closed form, apart for the canonical (uncorrelated Rayleigh fading) case, while for more general fading conditions only bounds are provided. This lack of results is motivated by the complex dependence of the output signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at each branch of the receiving filter on both the squ…
We establish the optimal diversity-multiplexing (DM) tradeoff of coherent time, frequency, and time-frequency selective-fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and provide a code design criterion for DM tradeoff optimality. Our results are based on the new concept of the "Jensen channel" associated to a given selective-fading MIMO channel. While the original problem seems analytically intractable due to the mutual information between channel input and output being a sum of correlated random variables, the Jensen channel is equivalent to the original channel in the sense of the DM…

We study the information rates of non-coherent, stationary, Gaussian, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) flat-fading channels that are achievable with nearest neighbor decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation. In particular, we investigate the behavior of these achievable rates in the limit as the signal- to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity by analyzing the capacity pre-log, which is defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to the logarithm of the SNR as the SNR tends to infinity. We demonstrate that a scheme estimating the channel using pilot symbols and detecting the message us…
In this paper the performance limits and design principles of rateless codes over fading channels are studied. The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is used to analyze the system performance for all possible transmission rates. It is revealed from the analysis that the design of such rateless codes follows the design principle of approximately universal codes for parallel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, in which each sub-channel is a MIMO channel. More specifically, it is shown that for a single-input single-output (SISO) channel, the previously developed permutation codes …
Reliable estimation of users' channels and data in rapidly time varying fading environments is a very challenging task of multiuser detection (MUD) techniques that promise impressive capacity gains for interference limited systems such as non-orthogonal CDMA and spatial multiplexing MIMO based LTE. This paper analyzes relative channel estimation error performances of conventional single user and multiuser receivers for an uplink of DS-CDMA and shows their impact on output signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) performances. Mean squared error (MSE) of channel estimation and achievable s…
The Golden space-time trellis coded modulation (GST-TCM) scheme was proposed in \cite{Hong06} for a high rate $2\times 2$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system over slow fading channels. In this letter, we present the performance analysis of GST-TCM over block fading channels, where the channel matrix is constant over a fraction of the codeword length and varies from one fraction to another, independently. In practice, it is not useful to design such codes for specific block fading channel parameters and a robust solution is preferable. We then show both analytically and by simulation t…
This paper analyzes the problem of common randomness (CR) generation from correlated discrete sources aided by unidirectional communication over Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) slow fading channels with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and arbitrary state distribution. Slow fading channels are practically relevant for wireless communications. We completely solve the SISO slow fading case by establishing its corresponding outage CR capacity using our characterization of its channel outage capacity. The generated CR could be exploited to improve the performance gain in the identification s…
For ergodic fading, a lattice coding and decoding strategy is proposed and its performance is analyzed for the single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) point-to-point channel as well as the multiple-access channel (MAC), with channel state information available only at the receiver (CSIR). At the decoder a novel strategy is proposed consisting of a time-varying equalization matrix followed by decision regions that depend only on channel statistics, not individual realizations. Our encoder has a similar structure to that of Erez and Zamir. For the SISO channel…
This paper investigates the maximal achievable rate for a given blocklength and error probability over quasi-static multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels, with and without channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and/or the receiver. The principal finding is that outage capacity, despite being an asymptotic quantity, is a sharp proxy for the finite-blocklength fundamental limits of slow-fading channels. Specifically, the channel dispersion is shown to be zero regardless of whether the fading realizations are available at both transmitter and receiver, at only one of t…
We investigate the problem of message transmission over time-varying single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading channels with average power constraint and with complete channel state information available at the receiver side (CSIR). To describe the channel variations over the time, we consider a first-order Gauss-Markov model. We completely solve the problem by giving a single-letter characterization of the channel capacity in closed form and by providing a rigorous proof of it.
In this paper, we propose a polar coding scheme for secure communication over the multiple-input, single-output, single-antenna eavesdropper (MISOSE) fading channel. We consider the case of block fading channels with known eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and the case of fading channels with known eavesdropper channel distribution information (CDI). We use the artificial noise assisted secure precoding method to maximize the secrecy capacity in the first case, and to overcome the unawareness of the eavesdropper CSI in the second case. We show that our proposed scheme can provide bo…
We describe the structure of optimal Input covariance matrices for single user multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with covariance feedback and for general correlated fading. Our approach is based on the novel concept of right commutant and recovers previously derived results for the Kronecker product models. Conditions are derived which allow a significant simplification of the optimization problem.
In this correspondence, first-tier indirect (direct) discernible constellation expansions are defined for generalized orthogonal designs. The expanded signal constellation, leading to so-called super-orthogonal codes, allows the achievement of coding gains in addition to diversity gains enabled by orthogonal designs. Conditions that allow the shape of an expanded multidimensional constellation to be preserved at the channel output, on an instantaneous basis, are derived. It is further shown that, for such constellations, the channel alters neither the relative distances nor the angles between …
Wireless fading channels suffer from both channel fadings and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). As a result, it is impossible for fading channels to support a constant rate data stream without using buffers. In this paper, we consider information transmission over an infinite-buffer-aided block Rayleigh fading channel in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. We characterize the transmission capability of the channel in terms of stationary queue length distribution, packet delay, as well as data rate. Based on the memoryless property of the service provided by the channel in each bloc…
We study channel capacity when a one-bit quantizer is employed at the output of the discrete-time average-power-limited Rayleigh-fading channel. We focus on the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, where communication at very low spectral efficiencies takes place, as in Spread Spectrum and Ultra-Wideband communications. We demonstrate that, in this regime, the best one-bit quantizer does not reduce the asymptotic capacity of the coherent channel, but it does reduce that of the noncoherent channel.
In this paper, we study lattice coding for Rician fading wireless channels. This is motivated in particular by preliminary studies suggesting the Rician fading model for millimeter-wavelength wireless communications. We restrict to lattice codes arising from rotations of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, and to a single-input single-output (SISO) channel. We observe that several lattice design criteria suggest the optimality of Hadamard rotations. For instance, we prove that Hadamard rotations maximize the diamond-packing density among all rotated $\mathbb{Z}^n$ lattices. Finally, we provide simulations to show…
Discrete-time Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels are considered, with no channel state information at the transmitter and receiver. The fading is assumed to be correlated in time and independent from antenna to antenna. Peak and average transmit power constraints are imposed, either on the sum over antennas, or on each individual antenna. In both cases, an upper bound and an asymptotic lower bound, as the signal-to-noise ratio approaches zero, on the channel capacity are presented. The limit of normalized capacity is identified under the sum power constraints, and, …
This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decis…
The effective throughput of multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless communication systems over $κ-μ$ shadowed fading channels is analysed. To obtain exact closed-from expression, the moment generating function (MGF) of the instantaneous signal to noise ratio (SNR) with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) transmit antennas is employed. In addition, a special case of integer values for the fading parameter is performed to simplify the derived expression. The asymptotic behaviour of the effective throughput at high values of SNR is also studied. The Monte Carlo simulations and t…
The capacity of noncoherent fading relay channels is studied where all terminals are aware of the fading statistics but not of their realizations. It is shown that if the fading coefficient of the channel between the transmitter and the receiver can be predicted more accurately from its infinite past than the fading coefficient of the channel between the relay and the receiver, then at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) the relay does not increase capacity. It is further shown that if the fading coefficient of the channel between the transmitter and the relay can be predicted more accurately fro…
We consider a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) block-fading channel with a general model for channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). The model covers systems with causal CSIT, where only CSIT of past fading blocks is available, and predictive CSIT, where CSIT of some future fading blocks is available. The optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) and rate-diversity tradeoff (RDT) of the channel are studied under long-term power constraints. The impact of imperfect (mismatched) CSIT on the optimal DMT and RDT is also investigated. Our results show the outage diversity gain obtai…
A relationship between the growth-rate of logoptimal portfolios and capacity of fading single-input multiple output (SIMO) channels are established. Using this relation, stock vector stochastic processes that model the investment environments are stochastically ordered using different criteria. The presence of side information (SI) is considered, and a bound on the gains in the growth-rate due to SI is derived along with data processing inequality and convexity properties. A statistical test on the usefulness of SI that does not require the computation of the optimal portfolio vector in the pr…
We investigate the problem of common randomness (CR) generation from discrete correlated sources aided by one-way communication over single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) slow fading channels with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), arbitrary state distribution and with channel state information available at the receiver side (CSIR). We completely solve the problem by first characterizing the channel outage capacity of MIMO slow fading channels for arbitrary state distribution. For this purpose, we also provide an achievable rate for a specific compound MIMO Gaussian channel. Sec…
We study a noncoherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading multiple-access channel (MAC), where the transmitters and the receiver are aware of the statistics of the fading, but not of its realisation. We analyse the rate region that is achievable with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-assisted channel estimation and determine the corresponding pre-log region, which is defined as the limiting ratio of the rate region to the logarithm of the SNR as the SNR tends to infinity.
Transmission of a Gaussian source over a time-varying multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is studied under strict delay constraints. Availability of a correlated side information at the receiver is assumed, whose quality, i.e., correlation with the source signal, also varies over time. A block-fading model is considered for the states of the time-varying channel and the time-varying side information; and perfect state information at the receiver is assumed, while the transmitter knows only the statistics. The high SNR performance, characterized by the \textit{distortion exponent}, is…
We establish an upper bound on the noncoherent capacity pre-log of temporally correlated block-fading single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channels. The upper bound matches the lower bound recently reported in Riegler et al. (2011), and, hence, yields a complete characterization of the SIMO noncoherent capacity pre-log, provided that the channel covariance matrix satisfies a mild technical condition. This result allows one to determine the optimal number of receive antennas to be used to maximize the capacity pre-log for a given block-length and a given rank of the channel covariance matrix.
We present novel exact expressions and accurate closed-form approximations for the level crossing rate (LCR) and the average fade duration (AFD) of the double Nakagami-m random process. These results are then used to study the second order statistics of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) keyhole fading channels with space-time block coding. Numerical and computer simulation examples validate the accuracy of the presented mathematical analysis and show the tightness of the proposed approximations.
In this correspondence, we analyze the ergodic capacity of a large uplink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system over generalized-$K$ fading channels. In the considered scenario, multiple users transmit their information to a base station equipped with a very large number of antennas. Since the effect of fast fading asymptotically disappears in massive MIMO systems, large-scale fading becomes the most dominant factor for the ergodic capacity of massive MIMO systems. Regarding this fact, in our work we concentrate our attention on the effects of large-scale fading for massiv…
We propose a technique to derive upper bounds on Gallager's cost-constrained random coding exponent function. Applying this technique to the non-coherent peak-power or average-power limited discrete time memoryless Ricean fading channel, we obtain the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expansion of this channel's cut-off rate. At high SNR the gap between channel capacity and the cut-off rate approaches a finite limit. This limit is approximately 0.26 nats per channel-use for zero specular component (Rayleigh) fading and approaches 0.39 nats per channel-use for very large specular components. We …
In this paper, we investigated the capacity and bit error rate (BER) performance of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) satellite systems with single and multiple dual polarized satellites in geostationary orbit and a mobile ground receiving station with multiple antennas. We evaluated the effects of both system parameters such as number of satellites, number of receive antennas, and SNR and environmental factors including atmospheric signal attenuations and signal phase disturbances on the overall system performance using both analytical and spatial models for MIMO satellite systems.
This letter presents a comprehensive framework analyzing the asymptotic error performance of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system employing spatial modulation (SM) with maximum likelihood detection and perfect channel state information. Generic analytical expressions for the diversity and coding gains are deduced that reveal fundamental properties of MIMO SM systems. The presented analysis can be used to obtain closed-form upper bounds for the average bit error probability (ABEP) of MIMO SM systems under generalized fading which become asymptotically tight in the high signal…
This article examines the queueing performance of communication systems that transmit encoded data over unreliable channels. A fading formulation suitable for wireless environments is considered where errors are caused by a discrete channel with correlated behavior over time. Random codes and BCH codes are employed as means to study the relationship between code-rate selection and the queueing performance of point-to-point data links. For carefully selected channel models and arrival processes, a tractable Markov structure composed of queue length and channel state is identified. This facilita…
This paper proposes a unified framework for the effective rate analysis over arbitrary correlated and not necessarily identical multiple inputs single output (MISO) fading channels, which uses moment generating function (MGF) based approach and H transform representation. The proposed framework has the potential to simplify the cumbersome analysis procedure compared to the probability density function (PDF) based approach. Moreover, the effective rates over two specific fading scenarios are investigated, namely independent but not necessarily identical distributed (i.n.i.d.) MISO hyper Fox's H…
The "Writing onto Fast Fading Dirt" (WFFD) channel is investigated to study the effects of partial channel knowledge on the capacity of the "writing on dirty paper" channel. The WFFD channel is the Gel'fand-Pinsker channel in which the output is obtained as the sum of the input, white Gaussian noise and a fading-times-state term. The fading-times-state term is equal to the element-wise product of the channel state sequence, known only at the transmitter, and a fast fading process, known only at the receiver. We consider the case of Gaussian distributed channel states and derive an approximate …
This paper presents a novel unified performance analysis of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) operating in the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) network and subjected to generalized shadowed fading and noise scenarios. Specifically, we derive novel, simple and accurate average bit error rates (ABER) expressions for coherent modulation schemes in the generalized η-μ and shadowed κ-μ fading channels. The noise in the network is assumed to be modeled by the additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN), which encompasses the Laplacian and the Gaussian noise environments as special cases. The…
This letter presents and analyzes orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based multi-carrier transmission for cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (CFmMIMO) over frequency-selective fading channels. Frequency-domain conjugate beamforming, pilot assignment, and user-specific resource allocation are proposed. CFmMIMO-OFDM is scalable to serve a massive number of users and is flexible to offer diverse data rates for heterogeneous applications.
This letter derives the asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) and outage probability of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) maximum ratio combining (MRC) systems. We consider Rayleigh fading channels with both transmit and receive spatial correlation. Our results are based on new asymptotic expressions which we derive for the p.d.f. and c.d.f. of the maximum eigenvalue of positive-definite quadratic forms in complex Gaussian matrices. We prove that spatial correlation does not affect the diversity order, but that it reduces the array gain and hence increases the SER in the high SNR regime.
