The capacity of a discrete-time memoryless channel, in which successive symbols fade independently, and where the channel state information (CSI) is neither available at the transmitter nor at the receiver, is considered at low SNR. We derive a closed form expression of the optimal capacity-achieving input distribution at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and give the exact capacity of a non-coherent channel at low SNR. The derived relations allow to better understanding the capacity of non-coherent channels at low SNR and bring an analytical answer to the peculiar behavior of the optimal input distribution observed in a previous work by Abou Faycal, Trott and Shamai. Then, we compute the non-coherence penalty and give a more precise characterization of the sub-linear term in SNR. Finally, in order to better understand how the optimal input varies with SNR, upper and lower bounds on the capacity-achieving input are given.
Wireless fading channels suffer from both channel fadings and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). As a result, it is impossible for fading channels to support a constant rate data stream without using buffers. In this paper, we consider information transmission over an infinite-buffer-aided block Rayleigh fading channel in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. We characterize the transmission capability of the channel in terms of stationary queue length distribution, packet delay, as well as data rate. Based on the memoryless property of the service provided by the channel in each bloc…
The covert capacity is characterized for a non-coherent fast Rayleigh-fading wireless channel, in which a legitimate user wishes to communicate reliably with a legitimate receiver while escaping detection from a warden. It is shown that the covert capacity is achieved with an amplitude-constrained input distribution that consists of a finite number of mass points including one at zero and numerically tractable bounds are provided. It is also conjectured that distributions with two mass points in fixed locations are optimal.
We investigate the problem of message transmission over time-varying single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading channels with average power constraint and with complete channel state information available at the receiver side (CSIR). To describe the channel variations over the time, we consider a first-order Gauss-Markov model. We completely solve the problem by giving a single-letter characterization of the channel capacity in closed form and by providing a rigorous proof of it.
We study a hierarchical heterogeneous Rayleigh fading wireless sensor network (WSN) in which sensor nodes surveil a region of interest (RoI) and use access points (APs) as relays to transmit their sensed information to base stations (BSs). By considering both large-scale path-loss signal attenuation and small-scale signal variation due to Rayleigh fading, we formulate the node deployment problem as an optimization problem intended to minimize the network's wireless communication power consumption. Given ergodic capacity constraints on all wireless links, we study the necessary conditions for a…
The recently proposed Fluctuating Two-Ray (FTR) model is gaining momentum as a reference fading model in scenarios where two dominant specular waves are present. Despite the numerous research works devoted to the performance analysis under FTR fading, little attention has been paid to effectively understanding the interplay between the fading model parameters and the fading severity. According to a new scale defined in this work, which measures the hyper-Rayleigh character of a fading channel in terms of the Amount of Fading, the outage probability and the average capacity, we see that the FTR…
The existing investigations on artificial noise (AN) security systems assumed that only null spaces is used to send AN signals, and all eigen-subchannels should be used to transmit messages. Our previous work proposed an AN scheme that allocates some of eigen-subchannels to transmit AN signals for improving secrecy rates. Nevertheless, our previous work considered only uncorrelated MIMO Rayleigh fading channels. In fact, the correlations among antennas exist in realistic scattering channel environments. In this paper, we extend our previous AN scheme to spatially correlated Rayleigh fading cha…
Device activity detection and channel estimation for massive grant-free access under frequency-selective fading have unfortunately been an outstanding problem. This paper aims to address the challenge. Specifically, we present an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based massive grant-free access scheme for a wideband system with one M-antenna base station (BS), N single-antenna Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and P channel taps. We obtain two different but equivalent models for the received pilot signals under frequency-selective Rayleigh fading. Based on each model, we formul…
We present nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds on the maximum coding rate achievable when transmitting short packets over a Rician memoryless block-fading channel for a given requirement on the packet error probability. We focus on the practically relevant scenario in which there is no \emph{a priori} channel state information available at the transmitter and at the receiver. An upper bound built upon the min-max converse is compared to two lower bounds: the first one relies on a noncoherent transmission strategy in which the fading channel is not estimated explicitly at the receiver; the sec…
Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) is a code-agnostic decoding technique for short-length and high-rate channel codes. GRAND tries to guess the channel noise by generating test error patterns (TEPs), and the sequence of the TEPs is the main difference between different GRAND variants. In this work, we extend the application of GRAND to multipath frequency non-selective Rayleigh fading communication channels, and we refer to this GRAND variant as Fading-GRAND. The proposed Fading-GRAND adapts its TEP generation to the fading conditions of the underlying communication channel, outpe…
Over the past decades, the problem of communication over finite-state Markov channels (FSMCs) has been investigated in many researches and the capacity of FSMCs has been studied in closed form under the assumption of the availability of partial/complete channel state information at the sender and/or the receiver. In our work, we focus on infinite-state Markov channels by investigating the problem of message transmission over time-varying single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gauss-Markov Rayleigh fading channels with average power constraint and with complete channel state informat…
This paper considers the distributed information bottleneck (D-IB) problem for a primitive Gaussian diamond channel with two relays and Rayleigh fading. Due to the bottleneck constraint, it is impossible for the relays to inform the destination node of the perfect channel state information (CSI) in each realization. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node knows the CSI and the relays can cooperate with each other, and also three achievable schemes with simple symbol-by-symbol relay processing and compression. Numerical results show that …
This paper concerns the maximum coding rate at which data can be transmitted over a noncoherent, single-antenna, Rayleigh block-fading channel using an error-correcting code of a given blocklength with a block-error probability not exceeding a given value. A high-SNR normal approximation of the maximum coding rate is presented that becomes accurate as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the number of coherence intervals $L$ over which we code tend to infinity. Numerical analyses suggest that the approximation is accurate at SNR values above 15dB and when the number of coherence intervals is 10…
We introduce the fdRLoS fading model as a natural generalization of the double-Rayleigh with line-of-sight fading model, on which the constant-amplitude line-of-sight component is now allowed to randomly fluctuate. We discuss the key benefits of the fdRLoS fading model here formulated over the state of the art, and provide an analytical characterization of its chief probability functions. We analyze the effect of the fading parameters that define the model, and discuss their impact on the performance of wireless communication systems.
A realistic performance assessment of any wireless technology requires the use of a channel model that reflects its main characteristics. The independent and identically distributed Rayleigh fading channel model has been (and still is) the basis of most theoretical research on multiple antenna technologies in scattering environments. This letter shows that such a model is not physically appearing when using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with rectangular geometry and provides an alternative physically feasible Rayleigh fading model that can be used as a baseline when evaluating RIS…
Recently, a generalization of the double-Rayleigh with line-of-sight channel fading model taking into account shadowing of the line-of-sight component has been proposed. In this research, a closed-form analysis of the average bit error rate for MPSK/MQAM modulations is performed. The derived solution is accompanied by proposed numerically efficient approximation and all possible asymptotic expressions that correspond to extreme channel parameters. Lastly, a numerical simulation was performed that demonstrated the correctness of the derived results.
This paper analyzes Type I hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) over time-correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Due to the presence of channel time correlation, the analysis is more challenging than the prior analysis in the literature. Outage probability is first derived as a weighted sum of joint CDF of multiple independent Gamma random variables based on an infinite series representation. A truncation method is proposed for efficient computation of the outage probability and it is proved that the truncation error decreases exponentially with the truncation order. Asymptotic outage probabil…
The proposed research performs the capacity analysis of the wireless channel described by the fluctuating double-Rayleigh with the line-of-sight model. The closed-form analytical expressions for the conditional capacity (in the case of arbitrary noninteger fading parameter) and the ergodic capacity (in the case of the integer fading parameter) are derived in terms of the extended generalized bivariate Meijer G-function. The exact solutions are succeeded by the approximating expressions deduced for the cases of small and large ratios between the Rician K-factor and the fading parameter. The per…
The high-SNR capacity of the noncoherent MIMO channel has been derived for the case of independent and identically distributed (IID) Rayleigh block fading by exploiting the Gaussianity of the channel matrix. This implies the optimal degrees of freedom (DoF), i.e., the capacity pre-log factor. Nevertheless, as far as the optimal DoF is concerned, IID Rayleigh fading is apparently a sufficient but not necessary condition. In this paper, we show that the optimal DoF for the IID Rayleigh block fading channel is also the optimal DoF for a more general class of generic block fading channels, in whic…
In this paper, performance of hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) over Rayleigh fading channels is investigated. Different from prior analysis, time correlation in the channels is considered. Under time-correlated fading channels, the mutual information in multiple HARQ transmissions is correlated, making the analysis challenging. By using polynomial fitting technique, probability distribution function of the accumulated mutual information is derived. Three meaningful performance metrics including outage probability, average number of transmissions and long te…
We investigate the performance of a dual-hop intervehicular communications (IVC) system with relay selection strategy. We assume a generalized fading channel model, known as cascaded Rayleigh (also called n*Rayleigh), which involves the product of n independent Rayleigh random variables. This channel model provides a realistic description of IVC, in contrast to the conventional Rayleigh fading assumption, which is more suitable for cellular networks. Unlike existing works, which mainly consider double-Rayleigh fading channels (i.e, n = 2); our system model considers the general cascading order…
