We present an application of elimination theory to the study of singularities over arbitrary fields, particularly to the open problem of resolution. A partial extension of a function, defining resolution of singularities over fields of characteristic zero, is discussed here in positive characteristic.
The objective of this paper is to discuss invariants of singularities of algebraic schemes over fields of positive characteristic, and to show how they yield the simplification of singularities. We focus here on invariants which arise in an inductive manner, namely by successive elimination of variables. When applied to hypersurface singularities they lead us to a refinement of the notion of multiplicity. The main theorem proves that, under some numerical conditions expressed by these invariants, singularities can be simplified by blowups at centers prescribed by this refinement.
We compare some algebras appeared in the recent attempts to prove resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. We also construct an algebra which encodes the same information and it is equivalent, up to integral closure, to the previous structures. In the case of characteristic zero one may use these structures to obtain a resolution of singularities.
The paper is motivated on the open problem of resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. The aim is to present a form of induction which is different from that used by Hironaka. In characteristic zero induction is formulated by restriction to smooth hypersurfaces (hypersurfaces of maximal contact). Our alternative approach, introduced here, replaces restrictions to smooth sub-schemes by generic projections on smooth schemes of smaller dimension. We also introduce a generalization of the discriminant, and our result makes use of the elimination theory. In the case of fields of char…
Given a variety $X$ over a perfect field, we study the partition defined on $X$ by the multiplicity (into equimultiple points), and the effect of blowing up at smooth equimultiple centers. Over fields of characteristic zero we prove resolution of singularities by using the multiplicity as an invariant, instead of the Hilbert Samuel function.
We study singularities f in K[[x_1,...,x_n]] over an algebraically closed field K of arbitrary characteristic with respect to right respectively contact equivalence, and we establish that the finiteness of the Milnor respectively the Tjurina number is equivalent to finite determinacy. We give improved bounds for the degree of determinacy in positive characteristic. Moreover, we consider different non-degeneracy conditions of Kouchnirenko, Wall and Beelen-Pellikaan in positive characteristic, and we show that planar Newton non-degenerate singularities satisfy Milnor's formula mu=2 delta-r+1. Th…
Assume that there exists a hypersurface singularity which cannot be resolved by iterated monoidal transformations in positive characteristic. We show that in the set of defining functions of hypersurface singularities which cannot be resolved, we can find a function satisfying very strong conditions. By these conditions we may be able to deduce a contradiction under the above assumption. Besides, we introduce fundamental concepts for the study of resolution of singularities of germs such as space germs, iterated analytic monoidal transforms with a normal crossing, Weierstrass representations, …
The main purpose of this article is to lay the foundations for a classification of isolated hypersurface singularities in positive characteristic. Although our article is in the spirit of Arnol'd who classified real an complex hypersurfaces in the 1970's with respect to right equivalence, several new phenomena occur in positive characteristic. Already the notion of isolated singularity is different for right resp. contact equivalence over fields of characteristic other than zero. The heart of this paper consists of the study of different notions of non-degeneracy and the associated piecewise f…
In this paper, we study the singularities of a general hyperplane section $H$ of a three-dimensional quasi-projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that if $X$ has only canonical singularities, then $H$ has only rational double points. We also prove, under the assumption that $p>5$, that if $X$ has only klt singularities, then so does $H$.
Quantifier elimination of positive semidefinite cyclic ternary quartic forms is studied in this paper. We solve the problem by the theory of complete discrimination systems, function \RealTriangularize in Maple15 and the so-called Criterions on Equality of Symmetric Inequalities method. The equivalent simple quantifier-free formula is proposed and is difficult to obtain automatically by previous methods or quantifier elimination tools.
The object of the present is a proof of the existence of functorial resolution of tame quotient singularities for quasi-projective varieties over algebraically closed fields.
In this survey paper we give an overview on some aspects of singularities of algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We review in particular results on equisingularity of plane curve singularities, classification of hypersurface singularities and determinacy of arbitrary singularities. The section on equisingularity has its roots in two important early papers by Antonio Campillo. One emphasis is on the differences between positive and zero characteristic and on open problems.
Toward resolution of singularities over a field of positive characteristic (The Idealistic Filtration Program) Part II. Basic invariants associated to the idealistic filtration and their properties
The problem of classification of real and complex singularities was initiated by Arnol'd in the sixties who classified simple, unimodal and bimodal w.r.t. right equivalence. The classification of right simple singularities in positive characteristic was achieved by Greuel and the author in 2014. In the present paper we classify right unimodal and bimodal singularities in positive characteristic by giving explicit normal forms. Moreover we completely determine all possible adjacencies of simple, unimodal and bimodal singularities. As an application we prove that, for singularities of right moda…
A sequence of monoidal transformations is defined, in terms of invariants, for a singular hypersurface embedded in a smooth scheme of positive characteristic. Some examples are added to illustrate the improvement of singularities by this procedure.
We establish a new fundamental class of varieties in nonnoetherian algebraic geometry related to the central geometry of dimer algebras. Specifically, given an affine algebraic variety $X$ and a finite collection of non-intersecting positive dimensional algebraic sets $Y_i \subset X$, we construct a nonnoetherian coordinate ring whose variety coincides with $X$ except that each $Y_i$ is identified as a distinct positive dimensional closed point. We then show that the noncommutative blowup of such a singularity is a noncommutative desingularization, in a suitable geometric sense.
We study the failure of the Lipman-Zariski conjecture in positive characteristic. For rational double points, the conjecture holds true except for a short finite list of exceptions. For log canonical surface singularities, the conjecture continues to hold with the same list of exceptions under an additional tameness hypothesis. In particular, among rational double points in characteristic $p \ge 7$ Lipman's counterexample is the only one, and the conjecture holds for all tame $F$-pure normal surface singularities.
We introduce an upper semi-continuous function that stratifies the highest multiplicity locus of a hypersurface in arbitrary characteristic (over a perfect field). The blow-up along the maximum stratum defined by this function leads to a form of simplification of the singularities, also known as a reduction to the monomial case.

We present enumerative results for holomorphic foliations by curves on $\mathbb{P}^n$, $n\geq 3$, with singularities of positive dimension. Some of the results presented improve previous ones due to Corrêa--Fernández-Pérez--Nonato Costa--Vidal Martins and Nonato Costa. We also present an enumerative result bounding the number of isolated singularities in a projective subvariety invariant by a holomorphic foliation by curves on $\mathbb{P}^n$ with a singularity of positive dimension.
In this paper we show that any hypersurface singularities of germs of varieties in positive characteristic can be resolved by iterated monoidal transformations in centers in smooth subvarieties, if we have a valuation ring of iterated divisor type associated with the germ. Besides, we introduce fundamental concepts for the study of resolution of singularities of germs such as space germs, iterated analytic monoidal transformations with a normal crossing, Weierstrass representations, reduction sequences, and so forth.
It is well known that the Gauss map for a complex plane curve is birational, whereas the Gauss map in positive characteristic is not always birational. Let $q$ be a power of a prime integer. We study a certain plane curve of degree $q^2+q+1$ for which the Gauss map is inseparable with inseparable degree $q$. As a special case, we show a relation between the dual curve of the Fermat curve of degree $q^2+q+1$ and the Ballico-Hefez curve.
We show that there exists a natural number $p_0$ such that any three-dimensional Kawamata log terminal singularity defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>p_0$ is rational and in particular Cohen-Macaulay.
\noindent Let $μ(f)$ resp. $c(f)$ be the Milnor number resp. the degree of the conductor of an irreducible power series $f\in \bK[[x,y]]$, where $\bK$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. It is well-known that $μ(f)\geq c(f)$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality $μ(f)=c(f)$ in terms of the semigroup associated with $f$, provided that $p>\ord f$.
Toward resolution of singularities over a field of positive characteristic Part I. Foundation of the program: the language of the idealistic filtration
This paper studies several notions of sheaves of differential forms that are better behaved on singular varieties than Kähler differentials. Our main focus lies on varieties that are defined over fields of positive characteristic. We identify two promising notions: the sheafification with respect to the cdh-topology, and right Kan extension from the subcategory of smooth varieties to the category of all varieties. Our main results are that both are cdh-sheaves and agree with Kähler differentials on smooth varieties. They agree on all varieties under weak resolution of singularities. A number o…
We present a hypersurface singularity in positive characteristic which is defined by a purely inseparable power series, and a sequence of point blowups so that, after applying the blowups to the singularity, the same type of singularity reappears after the last blowup, with just certain exponents of the defining power series shifted upwards. The construction hence yields a cycle. Iterating this cycle leads to an infinite increase of the residual order of the defining power series. This disproves a theorem claimed by Moh about the stability of the residual order under sequences of blowups. It i…
A cone singularity is a normal affine variety $X$ with an effective one-dimensional torus action with a unique fixed point $x\in X$ which lies in the closure of any orbit of the $k^*$-action. In this article, we prove a boundedness theorem for cone singularities in terms of their dimension, singularities, and isotropies. Given $d$ and $N$ two positive integers and $ε$ a positive real number, we prove that the class of $d$-dimensional $ε$-log canonical cone singularities with isotropies bounded by $N$ forms a bounded family.
We present a reduction of the function field Mordell-Lang conjecture to the function field Manin-Mumford conjecture, in all characteristics, via model theory, but avoiding recourse to the dichotomy theorems for (generalized) Zariski structures. In this version 2, the quantifier elimination result in positive characteristic is extended from simple abelian varieties to all abelian varieties, completing the main theorem in the positive characteristic case. In version 3, some corrections are made to the proof of quantifier elimination in positive characteristic, and the paper is substantially reor…
We classify isolated hypersurface singularities $f\in K[[x_1,..., x_n]]$, $K$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, which are simple w.r.t. right equivalence, that is, which have no moduli up to analytic coordinate change. For $K=\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb C$ this classification was initiated by Arnol'd, resulting in the famous ADE-series. The classification w.r.t. contact equivalence for $p>0$ was done by Greuel and Kröning with a result similar to Arnol'd's. It is surprising that w.r.t. right equivalence and for any given $p>0$ we have only finitely many simple singularities, i.…
Let (X, ω) be an affine symplectic variety. Assume that X has a C^*-action with positive weights and ωis homogeneous with respect to the C^*-action. We prove that the algebraic fundamental group of the smooth locus X_{reg} is finite. This is a collorary to a more general theorem: If an affine variety X has a C^*action with positive weights and the log pair (X, 0) has klt singularities, then the algebraic fundamental group of X_{reg} is finite.
We study classical invariants for plane curve singularities $f\in K[[x,y]]$, $K$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$: Milnor number, delta invariant, kappa invariant and multiplicity. It is known, in characteristic zero, that $μ(f)=2δ(f)-r(f)+1$ and that $κ(f)=2δ(f)-r(f)+\mathrm{mt}(f)$. For arbitrary characteristic, Deligne prove that there is always the inequality $μ(f)\geq 2δ(f)-r(f)+1$ by showing that $μ(f)-\left( 2δ(f)-r(f)+1\right)$ measures the wild vanishing cycles. By introducing new invariants $γ,\tildeγ$, we prove in this note that $κ(f)\geq γ(f)+\mathrm{mt}(f)…
We develop geometry of algebraic subvarieties of $K^{n}$ over arbitrary Henselian valued fields $K$. This is a continuation of our previous article concerned with algebraic geometry over rank one valued fields. At the center of our approach is again the closedness theorem that the projections $K^{n} \times \mathbb{P}^{m}(K) \to K^{n}$ are definably closed maps. It enables application of resolution of singularities in much the same way as over locally compact ground fields. As before, the proof of that theorem uses i.a. the local behavior of definable functions of one variable and fiber shrinki…
The problem of resolution of singularities in positive characteristic can be reformulated as follows: Fix a hypersurface $X$, embedded in a smooth scheme, with points of multiplicity at most $n$. Let an $n$-sequence of transformations of $X$ be a finite composition of monoidal transformations with centers included in the $n$-fold points of $X$, and of its successive strict transforms. The open problem (in positive characteristic) is to prove that there is an $n$-sequence such that the final strict transform of $X$ has no points of multiplicity $n$ (no $n$-fold points). In characteristic zero, …
We prove a relative Kawamata Viehweg vanishing type theorem for birational morphisms. We use this to prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over log canonical threefolds without zero dimensional log canonical centers, in residue characteristic p greater than five. In large enough residue characteristics, we prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over threefold log canonical singularities with standard coefficients. These vanishing theorems can also be used to study the depth of log canonical singularities at non log canonical centers, as well as the singularities of the log canonical centers…
Over $\C$, Henry Laufer classified all taut surface singularities. We adapt and extent his transcendental methods to positive characteristic. With this we show that if a normal surface singularity is taut over $\C$, then the normal surface singularities with isomorphic dual graph over algebraically closed fields of characteristic exponent $p>1$ are taut for all but finitely many $p$. We conjecture that this is actually "if and only if".
Given an algebroid plane curve $f=0$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$ we consider the Milnor number $μ(f)$, the delta invariant $δ(f)$ and the number $r(f)$ of its irreducible components. Put $\bar μ(f)=2δ(f)-r(f)+1$. If $p=0$ then $\bar μ(f)=μ(f)$ (the Milnor formula). If $p>0$ then $μ(f)$ is not an invariant and $\bar μ(f)$ plays the role of $μ(f)$. Let $\mathcal N_f$ be the Newton polygon of $f$. We define the numbers $μ(\mathcal N_{f})$ and $r(\mathcal N_{f})$ which can be computed by explicit formulas. The aim of this note is to give a simple proof of the ine…
We study the singularities of the secant variety $Σ(X,L)$ associated to a smooth variety $X$ embedded by a sufficiently positive adjoint bundle $L$. We show that $Σ(X,L)$ is always Du Bois singular. Examples of secant varieties with worse singularities when $L$ has weak positivity are provided. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for $Σ(X, L)$ to have rational singularities.
In characteristic two and dimension two, wild Z/2Z-actions on k[[u,v]] ramified precisely at the origin were classified by Artin, who showed in particular that they induce hypersurface singularities. We introduce in this article a new class of wild quotient singularities in any characteristic p>0 arising from certain non-linear actions of Z/pZ on the formal power series ring in n variables. These actions are ramified precisely at the origin, and their rings of invariants in dimension n=2 are hypersurface singularities, with an equation of a form similar to the form found by Artin when p=2. In …
