We complete the study of the supersingular locus in the fiber at $p$ of a Shimura variety attached to a unitary similitude group $\GU(1,n-1)$ over $\QQ$ in the case that $p$ is inert. This was started by the first author in \cite{Vo_Uni} where complete results were obtained for $n =2,3$. In this paper we study the supersingular locus of the reduction modulo p of the Shimura variety for GU(1,s) in the case of an inert prime p. Using Dieudonné theory we define a stratification of the corresponding moduli space of p-divisible groups. We describe the incidence relation of this stratification in terms of the Bruhat-Tits building of a unitary group. In the case of GU(1,2), we show that the supersingular locus is equi-dimensional of dimension 1 and is of complete intersection. We give an explicit description of the irreducible components and their intersection behaviour.
A Brill-Noether locus is a subvariety of M_g consisting of curves having certain linear series g^r_d. We study the relative position of Brill-Noether loci with respect to the gonality stratification of M_g. We construct smooth curves in P^r of given degree and genus and having the `expected' gonality. As an application we give a new proof of our result about the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space of curves of genus 23.
We review the Newton stratification and Ekedahl-Oort stratification on the special fiber of a smooth integral model for a Shimura variety of Hodge type at a prime of good reduction. We show that the μ-ordinary locus coincides with the generic Ekedahl-Oort stratum, and that for any two geometric points in the μ-ordinary locus there is an isomorphism of the attached Dieudonne modules with additional structure. In this paper, we study the zero loci of local systems of the form $δΠ$, where $Π$ is the period sheaf of the universal family of CY hypersurfaces in a suitable ambient space $X$, and $δ$ is a given differential operator on the space of sections $V^\vee=Γ(X,K_X^{-1})$. Using earlier results of three of the authors and their collaborators, we give several different descriptions of the zero locus of $δΠ$. We investigate Siegel modular varieties in positive characteristic with Iwahori level structure. On these spaces, we have the Newton stratification, and the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification; one would like to understand how these stratifications are related to each other. We give a simple description of all KR strata which are entirely contained in the supersingular locus as disjoint unions of Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We also give an explicit numerical description of the KR stratification in terms of abelian varieties.

We study the degree of the Gauss map of the theta divisor of principally polarised complex abelian varieties. We use this to obtain a bound on the multiplicity of the theta divisor along irreducible components of its singular locus, and apply this bound in examples, and to understand the local structure of isolated singular points. We further define a stratification of the moduli space of ppav's by the degree of the Gauss map. In dimension four, we show that this stratification gives a weak solution of the Schottky problem, and we conjecture that this is true in any dimension.

In this paper we study the natural stratification, defined using the absolute Frobenius of X, on the moduli space of vector bundles on X of suitable rank.
