Motivated by Xing's method [7], we show that there exist [n,k,d] linear Hermitian codes over F_{q^2} with k+d>=n-3 for all sufficiently large q. This improves the asymptotic bound of Algebraic-Geometry codes from Hermitian curves given in [9,10].
Hermitian algebraic functions were introduced by Catlin and D'Angelo under the name of "globalizable metrics". Catlin and D'Angelo proved that any Hermitian algebraic function without non-trivial zeros is a quotient of squared norms, thus giving an answer to a Hermitian analogue of Hilbert's 17th problem in the non-degenerate case. The result was independently proved somewhat earlier by D. Quillen in a special case, and using different methods. In this paper, we characterize all Hermitian algebraic functions that are quotients of squared norms.
We reconstruct hermitian K-theory via algebraic symplectic cobordism. In the motivic stable homotopy category SH(S) there is a unique morphism g : MSp -> BO of commutative ring T- spectra which sends the Thom class th^{MSp} to the Thom class th^{BO}. We show that the induced morphism of bigraded cohomology theories MSp^{*,*} -> BO^{*,*} is isomorphic to the morphism of bigraded cohomology theories obtained by applying to MSp^{*,*} the "change of (simply graded) coefficients rings" MSp^{4*,2*} -> BO^{4*,2*}. This is an algebraic version of the theorem of Conner and Floyd reconstructing real K-t…
In this paper we study the algebraic-geometry of any one-point code on the Hermitian curve. Moreover, we characterize the minimum-weight codewords of some of their dual codes and describe many their small-weight codewords.
Matthews and Michel investigated the minimum distances in certain algebraic-geometry codes arising from a higher degree place $P$. In terms of the Weierstrass gap sequence at $P$, they proved a bound that gives an improvement on the designed minimum distance. In this paper, we consider those of such codes which are constructed from the Hermitian function field. We determine the Weierstrass gap sequence $G(P)$ where $P$ is a degree 3 place, and compute the Matthews and Michel bound with the corresponding improvement. We show more improvements using a different approach based on geometry. We als…
We study the algebraic geometry of a family of evaluation codes from plane smooth curves defined over any field. In particular, we provide a cohomological characterization of their dual minimum distance. After having discussed some general results on zero-dimensional subschemes of the plane, we focus on the interesting case of Hermitian $s$-point codes, describing the geometry of their dual minimum-weight codewords.
In this paper we study the algebraic geometry of any two-point code on the Hermitian curve and reveal the purely geometric nature of their dual minimum distance. We describe the minimum-weight codewords of many of their dual codes through an explicit geometric characterization of their supports. In particular, we show that they appear as sets of collinear points in many cases.
We develop the version of the $J$-invariant for hermitian forms over quadratic extensions in a similar way Alexander Vishik did it for quadratic forms. This discrete invariant contains informations about rationality of algebraic cycles on the maximal unitary grassmannian associated with a hermitan form over a quadratic extension. The computation of the canonical $2$-dimension of this grassmannian in terms of the $J$-invariant is provided, as well as a complete motivic decomposition.
In this paper we study the relationship between three compactifications of the moduli space of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a fixed Hermitian vector bundle over a projective algebraic manifold of arbitrary dimension. Via the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem, this space is analytically isomorphic to the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles, and as such it admits an algebraic compactification by Gieseker-Maruyama semistable torsion-free sheaves. A recent construction due to the first and third authors gives another compactification as a moduli space of slope semistable sheaves…
We consider heights of horizontal irreducible divisors on an arithmetic surface with respect to some hermitian line bundle. We obtain both lower and upper bounds for these heights. The results are different and sometimes stronger that those of S.Zhang on the same question. The case of the relative dualizing sheaf with the Arakelov metric is made especially explicit.
A criterion for the existence of a plane model of an algebraic curve such that the Galois closures of projections from two points are the same is presented. As an application, it is proved that the Hermitian curve in positive characteristic coincides with the Galois closures of projections of some plane curve from some two non-uniform points.
Let $G$ be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $2$. Fix a parabolic subgroup $P$ such that the corresponding parabolic subgroup over $\mathbb{C}$ has abelian unipotent radical and fix a Levi subgroup $L\subseteq P$. We parametrize the orbits of a Borel $B\subseteq P$ over the Hermitian symmetric variety $G/L$ supposing the root system $Φ$ is irreducible. For $Φ$ simply laced we prove a combinatorial characterization of the Bruhat order over these orbits. We also prove a formula to compute the dimension of the orbits from combinat…
Let E_G be a principal G-bundle over a compact connected Kähler manifold, where G is a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group. We show that E_G is semistable if and only if it admits approximate Hermitian-Einstein structures.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group and $P$ a parabolic subgroup of $G$ with abelian unipotent radical $P^u$, and let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ contained in P. Let $\mathfrak{p}^u$ be the Lie algebra of $P^u$ and let $L$ be a Levi factor of $P$, then $L$ is a Hermitian symmetric subgroup of $G$ and $B$ acts with finitely many orbits both on $\mathfrak{p}^u$ and on $G/L$. In this paper we study the Bruhat order of the $B$-orbits in $\mathfrak{p}^u$ and in $G/L$, proving respectively a conjecture of Panyushev and a conjecture of Richardson and Ryan.
The complete classification of the orbits on subspaces under the action of the projective stabiliser of (classical) algebraic varieties is a challenging task, and few classifications are complete. We focus on a particular action of $\PGL(2,q^2)$ (and $\PSL(2,q^2)$) arising from the Hermitian Veronese curve in $\PG(3, q^2)$, a maximal rational curve embedded on a smooth Hermitian surface with some fascinating properties. The study of its orbits leads to a new construction of quasi-Hermitian surfaces: sets of points with the same combinatorial and geometric properties as a non-degenerate Hermiti…
In a recent paper, Colliot-Thélène, Parimala and Suresh conjectured that a local-global principle holds for projective homogeneous spaces of connected linear algebraic groups over function fields of p-adic curves. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is true for a linear algebraic group whose almost simple factors of its semisimple part are isogenous to unitary groups or special unitary groups of hermitian or skew-hermitian spaces over central simple algebras with involutions. The proof implements patching techniques of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. As an application, we obtain a Sprin…
In this paper we study the distribution of successive minima of global sections of powers of a metrized ample line bundle on a variety over a number field. We develop criteria for there to exist a measure on the real line describing the limiting behavior of this distribution as one considers increasing powers of the bundle. When this measure exists, we develop methods for determining it explicitly. We present applications to the distribution of Petersson norms of cusp forms of increasing weight for SL_2(Z) and to the minimal sup norm of algebraic functions on adelic subsets of curves arising i…
We study the set $R$ of nonplanar rational curves of degree $d<q+2$ on a smooth Hermitian surface $X$ of degree $q+1$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, where $q$ is a power of $p$. We prove that $R$ is the empty set when $d<q+1$. In the case where $d=q+1$, we count the number of elements of $R$ by showing that the group of projective automorphisms of $X$ acts transitively on $R$ and by determining the stabilizer subgroup. In the special case where $X$ is the Fermat surface, we present an element of $R$ explicitly.
Given a classical semisimple complex algebraic group G and a symmetric pair (G, K) of non-Hermitian type, we study the closures of the spherical nilpotent K-orbits in the isotropy representation of K. For all such orbit closures, we study the normality and we describe the K-module structure of the ring of regular functions of the normalizations.
Subfield subcodes of algebraic-geometric codes are good candidates for the use in post-quantum cryptosystems, provided their true parameters such as dimension and minimum distance can be determined. In this paper we present new values of the true dimension of subfield subcodes of $1$--point Hermitian codes, including the case when the subfield is not binary.
Every real hyperbolic form in three variables can be realized as the determinant of a linear net of Hermitian matrices containing a positive definite matrix. Such representations are an algebraic certificate for the hyperbolicity of the polynomial and their existence has been proved in several different ways. However, the resulting algorithms for computing determinantal representations are computationally intensive. In this note, we present an algorithm that reduces a large part of the problem to linear algebra and discuss its numerical implementation.
The Grassmannian is an important object in Algebraic Geometry. One of the many techniques used to study the Grassmannian is to build a vector space from its points in the projective embedding and study the properties of the resulting linear code. We introduce a new class of linear codes, called Affine Hermitian Grassman Codes. These codes are the linear codes resulting from an affine part of the projection of the Polar Hermitian Grassmann codes. They combine Polar Hermitian Grassmann codes and Affine Grassmann codes. We will determine the parameters of these codes.
In this paper, we prove effective upper bounds for effective sections of line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic varieties in terms of the volumes. They are effective versions of the Hilbert--Samuel formula and the arithmetic Hilbert--Samuel formula.
We provide an introduction to the mathematics and physics of the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation, a fully nonlinear geometric PDE on Kahler manifolds which plays an important role in mirror symmetry. We discuss the physical origin of the equation, and some recent progress towards its solution. In dimension 3 we prove a new Chern number inequality and discuss the relationship with algebraic stability conditions.
Let $M$ be a compact connected special flat affine manifold without boundary equipped with a Gauduchon metric $g$ and a covariant constant volume form. Let $G$ be either a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group or the real locus of a split real form of a complex reductive group. We prove that a flat principal $G$-bundle $E_G$ over $M$ admits a Hermitian-Einstein structure if and only if $E_G$ is polystable. A polystable flat principal $G$--bundle over $M$ admits a unique Hermitian-Einstein connection. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for …
Given a classical semisimple complex algebraic group G and a symmetric pair (G,K) of Hermitian type, we study the closures of the spherical nilpotent K-orbits in the isotropy representation of K. We show that all such orbit closures are normal and describe the K-module structure of their ring of regular functions.
This paper describes how, in the case of algebraic surfaces, the well-known theorem of Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau can be proved in a framework of generalized 'multiplier ideal sheaves', following the ideas of Siu. The key concept is that the destabilizing sheaf satisfies a differential inclusion relation. This relation is used, together with a complex Frobenius theorem for locally finitely generated subsheaves, to imply coherence of the destabilizing subsheaf.
We investigate the geometry of the support of small weight codewords of dual algebraic geometric codes on smooth complete intersections by applying the powerful tools recently developed by Alain Couvreur. In particular, by restricting ourselves to the case of Hermitian codes, we recover and extend previous results obtained by the second named author joint with Marco Pellegrini and Massimiliano Sala.
We introduce a model for Hermitian holormorphic Deligne cohomology on a projective algebraic manifold which allows to incorporate singular hermitian structures along a normal crossing divisor. In the case of a projective curve, the cup-product in cohomology is shown to correspond to a generalization of the Deligne pairing to line bundles with "good" hermitian metrics in the sense of Mumford and others. A particular case is that of the tangent bundle of the curve twisted by the negative of the singularity divisor of a hyperbolic metric: its cup square (corrected by the total area) is shown to b…
The Ekedahl-Oort type is a combinatorial invariant of a principally polarized abelian variety $A$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. It characterizes the $p$-torsion group scheme of $A$ up to isomorphism. Equivalently, it characterizes (the mod $p$ reduction of) the Dieudonné module of $A$ or the de Rham cohomology of $A$ as modules under the Frobenius and Vershiebung operators. There are very few results about which Ekedahl-Oort types occur for Jacobians of curves. In this paper, we consider the class of Hermitian curves, indexed by a prime power $q=p^n$, wh…
Decomposing an algebraic variety into irreducible or equidimensional components is a fundamental task in classical algebraic geometry and has various applications in modern geometry engineering. Several researchers studied the problem and developed efficient algorithms using $Gr$ö$bner$ basis method. In this paper, we try to modify the computation of unmixed decomposition of an algebraic variety based on improving the computation of $Zero(sat(\mathbb{T}))$, where $\mathbb{T}$ is a triangular set in $\textbf{K[X]}$.
A curve attaining the Hasse-Weil bound is called a maximal curve. Usually classical error-correcting codes obtained from a maximal curve have good parameters. However, the quantum stabilizer codes obtained from such classical error-correcting codes via Euclidean or Hermitian self-orthogonality do not always possess good parameters. In this paper, the Hermitian self-orthogonality of algebraic geometry codes obtained from two maximal curves is investigated. It turns out that the stabilizer quantum codes produced from such Hermitian self-orthogonal classical codes have good parameters.
Power decoding is a partial decoding paradigm for arbitrary algebraic geometry codes for decoding beyond half the minimum distance, which usually returns the unique closest codeword, but in rare cases fails to return anything. The original version decodes roughly up to the Sudan radius, while an improved version decodes up to the Johnson radius, but has so far been described only for Reed--Solomon and one-point Hermitian codes. In this paper we show how the improved version can be applied to any algebraic geometry code.
We investigate multi-point algebraic geometric codes defined from curves related to the generalized Hermitian curve introduced by Alp Bassa, Peter Beelen, Arnaldo Garcia, and Henning Stichtenoth. Our main result is to find a basis of the Riemann-Roch space of a series of divisors, which can be used to construct multi-point codes explicitly. These codes turn out to have nice properties similar to those of Hermitian codes, for example, they are easy to describe, to encode and decode. It is shown that the duals are also such codes and an explicit formula is given. In particular, this formula enab…
One-point codes on the Hermitian curve produce long codes with excellent parameters. Feng and Rao introduced a modified construction that improves the parameters while still using one-point divisors. A separate improvement of the parameters was introduced by Matthews considering the classical construction but with two-point divisors. Those two approaches are combined to describe an elementary construction of two-point improved codes. Upon analysis of their minimum distance and redundancy, it is observed that they improve on the previous constructions for a large range of designed distances.
