The method of detection of the unstable periodic spatio-temporal states of spatial extended chaotic systems has been proposed. The application of this method is illustrated by the consideration of two different systems: i) the fluid model of Pierce diode being one of the fundamental system of the physics of plasmas and microwave electronics and ii) the complex one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equation demonstrating different regimes of spatio-temporal chaos.
This paper presents the space-split sensitivity or the S3 algorithm to transform Ruelle's linear response formula into a well-conditioned ergodic-averaging computation. We prove a decomposition of Ruelle's formula that is differentiable on the unstable manifold, which we assume to be one-dimensional. This decomposition of Ruelle's formula ensures that one of the resulting terms, the stable contribution, can be computed using a regularized tangent equation, similar to in a non-chaotic system. The remaining term, known as the unstable contribution, is regularized and converted into an efficientl…
One approach to understand the chaotic dynamics of nonlinear dissipative systems is the study of non-chaotic yet dynamically unstable invariant solutions embedded in the system's chaotic attractor. The significance of zero-dimensional unstable fixed points and one-dimensional unstable periodic orbits capturing time-periodic dynamics is widely accepted for high-dimensional chaotic systems including fluid turbulence, while higher-dimensional invariant tori representing quasi-periodic dynamics have rarely been considered. We demonstrate that unstable 2-tori are generically embedded in the hyperch…
We investigate the evolution of phase space close to complex unstable periodic orbits in two galactic type potentials. They represent characteristic morphological types of disc galaxies, namely barred and normal (non-barred) spiral galaxies. These potentials are known for providing building blocks to support observed features such as the peanut, or X-shaped bulge, in the former case and the spiral arms in the latter. We investigate the possibility that these structures are reinforced, apart by regular orbits, also by orbits in the vicinity of complex unstable periodic orbits. We examine the ev…
Chaotic dynamics in systems ranging from low-dimensional nonlinear differential equations to high-dimensional spatio-temporal systems including fluid turbulence is supported by non-chaotic, exactly recurring time-periodic solutions of the governing equations. These unstable periodic orbits capture key features of the turbulent dynamics and sufficiently large sets of orbits promise a framework to predict the statistics of the chaotic flow. Computing periodic orbits for high-dimensional spatio-temporally chaotic systems remains challenging as known methods either show poor convergence properties…
In quantum chaos, the spectral statistics generally follows the predictions of Random Matrix Theory (RMT). A notable exception is given by scar states, that enhance probability density around unstable periodic orbits of the classical system, therefore causing significant deviations of the spectral density from RMT expectations. In this work, the problem is considered of both RMT-ruled and scarred chaotic systems coupled to an opening. In particular, predictions are derived for the spectral density of a chaotic Hamiltonian scattering into a single- or multiple channels. The results are tested o…
Chaotic dynamics can be quite heterogeneous in the sense that in some regions the dynamics are unstable in more directions than in other regions. When trajectories wander between these regions, the dynamics is complicated. We say a chaotic invariant set is heterogeneous when arbitrarily close to each point of the set there are different periodic points with different numbers of unstable dimensions. We call such dynamics heterogeneous chaos (or hetero-chaos), While we believe it is common for physical systems to be hetero-chaotic, few explicit examples have been proved to be hetero-chaotic. Her…
Hyperbolic chaos in self-oscillating systems based on mechanical triple linkage: Testing absence of tangencies of stable and unstable manifolds for phase trajectories
We present a computable reformulation of Ruelle's linear response formula for chaotic systems. The new formula, called Space-Split Sensitivity or S3, achieves an error convergence of the order ${\cal O}(1/\sqrt{N})$ using $N$ phase points. The reformulation is based on splitting the overall sensitivity into that to stable and unstable components of the perturbation. The unstable contribution to the sensitivity is regularized using ergodic properties and the hyperbolic structure of the dynamics. Numerical examples of uniformly hyperbolic attractors are used to validate the S3 formula against a …

This paper reports the first finding of cupolets in a chaotic Hindmarsh-Rose neural model. Cupolets (chaotic, unstable, periodic, orbit-lets) are unstable periodic orbits that have been stabilized through a particular control scheme applying a binary control sequence. We demonstrate different neural dynamics (periodic or chaotic) of the Hindmarsh-Rose model through a bifurcation diagram where the external input current, $I$, is the bifurcation parameter. We select a region in the chaotic parameter space and provide the results of numerical simulations. In this chosen parameter space, a control…
