We develop the BRST approach to gauge invariant Lagrangian construction for the massive mixed symmetry integer higher spin fields described by the rank-two Young tableaux in arbitrary dimensional Minkowski space. The theory is formulated in terms of auxiliary Fock space. No off-shell constraints on the fields and the gauge parameters are imposed. The approach under consideration automatically leads to a gauge invariant Lagrangian for massive theory with all appropriate Stuckelberg fields. It is shown that all the restrictions defining an irreducible representation of the Poincare group arise from Lagrangian formulation as a consequence of the equations of motion and gauge transformations. As an example of the general procedure, we derive the gauge-invariant Lagrangian for massive rank-2 antisymmetric tensor field containing the complete set of auxiliary fields and gauge parameters.
We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian formulation for massive higher integer spin fields on a flat space-time of arbitrary dimension. General procedure of gauge invariant Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of massive bosonic field with any spin is given. No off-shell constraints on the fields (like tracelessness) and the gauge parameters are imposed. The procedure is based on construction of new representation for the closed algebra generated by the constraints defining an irreducible massive bosonic representation of the Poincare group. We also construct Lagrangian describin…
We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian construction for the massive integer higher spin fields in an arbitrary dimensional AdS space. The theory is formulated in terms of auxiliary Fock space. Closed nonlinear symmetry algebra of higher spin bosonic theory in AdS space is found and method of deriving the BRST operator for such an algebra is proposed. General procedure of Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of bosonic field with any spin is given on the base of the BRST operator. No off-shell constraints on the fields and the gauge parameters are used from the very beginning. As…
We apply the BRST approach, previously developed for higher spin field theories, to gauge invariant Lagrangian construction for antisymmetric massive and massless bosonic fields in arbitrary d-dimensional curved space. The obtained theories are reducible gauge models both in massless and massive cases and the order of reducibility grows with the value of the rank of the antisymmetric field. In both the cases the Lagrangians contain the sets of auxiliary fields and possess more rich gauge symmetry in comparison with standard Lagrangian formulation for the antisymmetric fields. This serves addit…
We formulate the conditions defining the irreducible continuous spin representation of the four-dimensional Poincaré group based on spin-tensor fields with dotted and undotted indices. Such a formulation simplifies analysis of the Bargmann-Wigner equations and reduces the number of equations from four to three. Using this formulation we develop the BRST approach and derive the covariant Lagrangian for the continuous spin fields.
Covariant Lagrangian formulation for free bosonic massless fields of arbitrary mixed-symmetry type in (A)dS(d) space-time is presented. The analysis is based on the frame-like formulation of higher-spin field dynamics [1] with higher-spin fields described as p-forms taking values in appropriate modules of the (A)dS(d). The problem of finding free field action is reduced to the analysis of an appropriate differential complex, with the derivation Q associated with the variation of the action. The constructed action exhibits additional gauge symmetries in the flat limit in agreement with the gene…
In this paper we will study tachyon effective action for Dp-brane in bosonic string theory in the linear dilaton background. We obtain the tachyon effective Lagrangian from boundary state coeficient of Dp-brane in the linear dilaton background and compare it with tachyon effective Lagrangians that were proposed in previous papers.
In this paper, as a first step toward frame-like gauge invariant formulation for massive mixed symmetry bosonic fields, we consider mixed tensors, corresponding to Young tableau with two rows with k >= 2 boxes in the first row and only one box in the second one. We construct complete Lagrangian and gauge transformations describing massive particles in (anti) de Sitter space-time with arbitrary dimension d >= 4 and investigate all possible massless and partially massless limits.

We consider the sigma-model description of an open string interacting with massive fields of the fourth (third massive) level. Equations of motion for the background fields are obtained by demanding that the renormalized operator of the energy-momentum tensor trace vanishes.
In this paper we complete our construction of frame-like gauge invariant description for massive mixed symmetry tensor fields corresponding to arbitrary Young tableau with two rows started in [1]. We consider general massive theory in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary cosmological constant as well as all special limits which exist both in de Sitter and in anti-de Sitter spaces.
In this paper we discuss in detail the frame-like formulation of free bosonic massless higher-spin fields of general symmetry type in AdS(d), announced recently in hep-th/0311164, hep-th/0501108. Properties of gauge invariant and AdS covariant action functionals and their flat limits are carefully analyzed.
We provide an explicit Lagrangian construction for the massless infinite spin N=1 supermultiplet in four dimensional Minkowski space. Such a supermultiplet contains a pair of massless bosonic and a pair of massless fermionic infinite spin fields with properly adjusted dimensionful parameters. We begin with the gauge invariant Lagrangians for such massless infinite spin bosonic and fermionic fields and derive the supertransformations which leave the sum of their Lagrangians invariant. It is shown that the algebra of these supertransformations is closed on-shell.
It is shown that supersymmetric integrable models in two dimensions, both relativistic (i.e. super-Toda type theories) and non-relativistic (reductions of super-KP hierarchies) can be associated to general Poisson-brackets structures given by superaffinizations of any bosonic Lie or any super-Lie algebra. This result allows enlarging the set of supersymmetric integrable models, which are no longer restricted to the subclass of superaffinizations of purely fermionic super-Lie algebras (that is admitting fermionic simple roots only).
We describe the family of normalizable solutions in linearized open string field theory, defined by $QΨ_0=0$ ($Q$ is BRST charge) understood in the sense $<<QΨ_0,Φ>>=0$ for an arbitrary string field $Φ$. The solutions depend on shifted partition numbers and are parametrized in terms of values of $ζ$-function at pairs of positive numbers greater than 2. We argue that the operators, defined by these solutions, create mixed quantum-mechanical states by acting on the vacuum (as opposed to standard vertex operators, creating the pure states with definite masses and spins).
We develop a complete off-shell Lagrangian description of the free $4D, {\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theory of infinite spin. Bosonic and fermionic fields are formulated in terms of spin-tensor fields with dotted and undotted indices. The corresponding Lagrangians for bosonic and fermionic infinite spin fields entering into the on-shell supersymmetric model are derived within the BRST method. Lagrangian for this supersymmetric model is written in terms of the complex infinite spin bosonic field and infinite spin fermionic Weyl field subject to supersymmetry transformations. The fields involved i…
We give an explicit component Lagrangian construction of massive higher spin on-shell $N=1$ supermultiplets in four-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space $AdS_4$. We use a frame-like gauge invariant description of massive higher spin bosonic and fermionic fields. For the two types of the supermultiplets (with integer and half-integer superspins) each one containing two massive bosonic and two massive fermionic fields we derive the supertransformations leaving the sum of four their free Lagrangians invariant such that the algebra of these supertransformations is closed on-shell.
In this paper we show that Ultradistributions of Exponential Type (UET) are appropriate for the description in a consistent way string and string field theories. A new Lagrangian for the closed string is obtained and shown to be equivalent to Nambu-Goto's Lagrangian. We also show that the string field is a linear superposition of UET of compact support CUET). We evaluate the propagator for the string field, and calculate the convolution of two of them.
Building on earlier work, we propose an elementary Lagrangian for the unification of the standard model with pre-gravitation, assumed to have an unbroken $E_8 \times E_8$ symmetry. The Lagrangian is patterned after the kinetic energy of a free particle in Newtonian dynamics, generalising it to the matrix-valued Lagrangian dynamics of a 2-brane on a split bioctonionic space. Symmetry breaking gives rise to the standard model quarks and leptons of three generations along with the known gauge interactions, and a novel right-handed counterpart $SU(3)_{grav}\times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_g$ identified …
In this paper we show that the holomorphic representation is appropriate for description in a consistent way string and string field theories, when the considered number of component fields of the string field is finite. A new Lagrangian for the closed string is obtained and shown to be equivalent to Nambu-Goto's Lagrangian. We give the notion of anti-string, evaluate the propagator for the string field, and calculate the convolution of two of them.
We compute the combined effect of confinement, an external magnetic field and temperature on the vacuum of the charged scalar field using Schwinger's formula for the effective action in the imaginary time formalism. The final result reproduces an effective Lagrangian similar to the Heisenberg-Euler one in the limit of no confinement, in the case of confinement it provides the necessary corrections to this Lagrangian at each order of magnitude of the magnetic field. The results show a finite temperature contribution to the vacum permeability constant apart from the one due to confinement alone.
We review the structure of local Lagrangians and field equations for free bosonic and fermionic gauge fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. These are first presented in a constrained setting and then the ($\g$-)trace constraints on fields and gauge parameters are eliminated via the introduction of a number of auxiliary fields.
We review the structure of local Lagrangians and field equations for free bosonic and fermionic gauge fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. These are first presented in a constrained setting extending the metric formulation of linearized gravity, and then the ($γ$-)trace constraints on fields and gauge parameters are eliminated via the introduction of auxiliary fields. We also display the emergence of Weyl-like symmetries in particular classes of models in low space-time dimensions.
The conventional S-matrix approach to the (tree level) open string low energy effective lagrangian assumes that, in order to obtain all its bosonic ${α'}^N$ order terms, it is necessary to know the open string (tree level) $(N+2)$-point amplitude of massless bosons, at least expanded at that order in $α'$. In this work we clarify that the previous claim is indeed valid for the bosonic open string, but for the supersymmetric one the situation is much more better than that: there are constraints in the kinematical bosonic terms of the amplitude (probably due to Spacetime Supersymmetry) such that…
Free mixed-symmetry arbitrary spin massive bosonic and fermionic fields propagating in AdS(5) are investigated. Using the light-cone formulation of relativistic dynamics we study bosonic and fermionic fields on an equal footing. Light-cone gauge actions for such fields are constructed. Various limits of the actions are discussed.
In this short note we present a Lagrangian formulation for free bosonic Higher Spin fields which belong to massless reducible representations of D-dimensional Anti de Sitter group using an ambient space formalism.
Consistent nontrivial interactions within a special class of covariant mixed-symmetry type tensor gauge fields of degree three are constructed from the deformation of the solution to the master equation combined with specific cohomological techniques. In spacetime dimensions strictly greater than four, the only consistent interaction terms are those gauge invariant under the original symmetry. Only in four spacetime dimensions the gauge symmetry is found deformed.
We consider the D=4, N=8 supergravity on AdS2 x S2 space. We obtain the truncated Lagrangian for the bosonic chiral primary fields, and compute the tree level three-point correlation functions.
The Born-Infeld lagrangian for non-abelian gauge theory is adapted to the case of the generalized gauge fields arising in non-commutative matrix geometry. Basic properties of static and time dependent solutions of the scalar sector of this model are investigated.
The Lagrangian frame-like formulation of free higher spin symmetric bosonic AdS(d) fields is given within a manifestly sp(2) invariant framework. It is designed to deal with infinite multiplets of fields appearing as gauge connections of the higher spin algebras.
We review the details of unconstrained Lagrangian formulations for Bose particles propagated on an arbitrary dimensional flat space-time and described by the unitary irreducible integer higher-spin representations of the Poincare group subject to Young tableaux $Y(s_1,...,s_k)$ with $k$ rows. The procedure is based on the construction of Verma modules and finding auxiliary oscillator realizations for the symplectic $sp(2k)$ algebra which encodes the second-class operator constraints subsystem in the HS symmetry algebra. Application of an universal BRST approach reproduces gauge-invariant Lagra…
The key aspects of a gauge-invariant Lagrangian description of massive and massless half-integer higher-spin fields in AdS spaces with a two-row Young tableaux $Y(s_1,s_2)$ are presented in an unconstrained description, as well as in off-shell formulations with algebraic constraints, on the basis of BFV-BRST operators for non-linear operator superalgebras, encoding the initial conditions realized by constraints in a Fock space and extracting the higher-spin fields from unitary representations of the AdS group.
We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian formulation for massive bosonic and massless fermionic higher spin fields on a flat space-time of arbitrary dimension. General procedure of gauge invariant Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of the fields with any spin is given. No off-shell constraints on the fields (like tracelessness) and the gauge parameters are imposed. The procedure is based on construction of new representations for the closed algebras generated by the constraints defining irreducible representations of the Poincare group. We also construct Lagrangians describing p…
In the recent paper [1] the classification of non-unitary representations of the three dimensional superconformal group has been constructed. From AdS/CFT they must correspond to N=1 supermultiplets containing partially massless fields in $AdS_4$. Moreover, the simplest example of such supermultiplets which contains a partially massless spin-2 was explicitly constructed. In this paper we extend this result and develop explicit Lagrangian construction of general N=1 supermultiplets containing partially massless fields with arbitrary superspin. We use the frame-like gauge invariant description o…
The spectrum of superstring theory on the $AdS_5 \times S_5$ Ramond-Ramond background in tensionless limit contains integer and half-integer higher-spin fields subject at most to two-rows Young tableaux $Y(s_1,s_2)$. We review the details of a gauge-invariant Lagrangian description of such massive and massless higher-spin fields in anti-de-Sitter spaces with arbitrary dimensions. The procedure is based on the construction of Verma modules, its oscillator realizations and of a BFV-BRST operator for non-linear algebras encoding unitary irreducible representations of AdS group.
We investigate the quantization of the bosonic string model which has a local U(1)_V * U(1)_A gauge invariance as well as the general coordinate and Weyl invariance on the world-sheet. The model is quantized by Lagrangian and Hamiltonian BRST formulations {á} la Batalin, Fradkin and Vilkovisky and noncovariant light-cone gauge formulation. Upon the quantization the model turns out to be formulated consistently in 26+2-dimensional background spacetime involving two time-like coordinates.
We present a manifestly SO(8) invariant non-linear Lagrangian for describing the non-abelian dynamics of the bosonic degrees of freedom of N coinciding M2 branes in flat spacetime. The theory exhibits a gauge symmetry structure of the BF type (semidirect product of SU(N) and translations) and at low energies it reduces exactly to the bosonic part of the Lorentzian Bagger-Lambert Lagrangian for group SU(N). There are eight scalar fields satisfying a free-scalar equation. When one of them takes a large expectation value, the non-linear Lagrangian gets simplified and the theory can be connected t…
We have covariantized the Lagrangians of the U(1)_V * U(1)_A models, which have U(1)_V * U(1)_A gauge symmetry in two dimensions, and studied their symmetric structures. The special property of the U(1)_V * U(1)_A models is the fact that all these models have an extra time coordinate in the target space-time. The U(1)_V * U(1)_A models coupled to two-dimensional gravity are string models in 26+2 dimensional target space-time for bosonic string and in 10+2 dimensional target space-time for superstring. Both string models have two time coordinates. In order to construct the covariant Lagrangians…
We describe the procedure of dimensional reduction of massless fields in $(D+1)$ dimensional Minkowski space to massive ones in $D$ dimensions in the first-quantized setting. The procedure is compatible with Lagrangian and in a straightforward way determines the inner product for massive fields. Howe duality and the extensive usage of BRST formalism allows to keep the description concise. We consider both bosonic and fermionic mixed-symmetry fields.
A simple generating procedure for Lagrangians of conformal gauge fields of mixed-symmetry type is presented. The construction originates from the analysis of the near-boundary behaviour of the associated AdS gauge fields using the ambient space approach to leading boundary values. Manifestly ambient form of the Lagrangian is also obtained. As an illustration we apply the procedure to the simplest mixed-symmetry conformal gauge field, described by the two-row Young diagram, and derive the explicit component form of the respective Lagrangian.
In this paper we give explicit first order Lagrangian formulation for mixed symmetry tensor fields Φ_{[μν],α}, T_{[μνα],β} and R_{[μν],[αβ]}. We show that such Lagrangians could be written in a very suggestive form similar to the well known tetrad formalism in gravity. Such description could simplify the investigations of possible interactions for these fields. Some examples of interactions are given.
We fulfill the detailed analysis of coupling the charged bosonic higher spin fields to external constant electromagnetic field in first order in external field strength. Cubic interaction vertex of arbitrary massive and massless bosonic higher spin fields with external field is found. Construction is based on deformation of free Lagrangian and free gauge transformations by terms linear in electromagnetic field strength. In massive case a formulation with Stueckelberg fields is used. We begin with most general form of deformations for Lagrangian and gauge transformations, admissible by Lorentz …
For SCFTs with an $SU(2)$ R-symmetry, we determine the superconformal blocks that contribute to the four-point correlation function of a priori distinct half-BPS superconformal primaries as an expansion in terms of the relevant bosonic conformal blocks. This is achieved by using the superconformal Casimir equation and the superconformal Ward identity to fix the coefficients of the bosonic blocks uniquely in a dimension-independent way. In addition we find that many of the resulting coefficients are related through a web of linear transformations of the conformal data.
Conformal totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Second-derivative (ordinary-derivative) formulation for such fields is developed. We obtain gauge invariant Lagrangian and the corresponding gauge transformations. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving the Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries on conformal gauge fields is obtained. Modified de Donder gauge condition and de Donder-Stueckelberg gauge condition are introduced. Using the de Donder-Stueckelberg g…
We construct the Lagrangian formulation of massive higher spin on-shell (1,0) supermultiplets in three dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The construction is based on description of the massive three dimensional fields in terms of frame-like gauge invariant formalism and technique of gauge invariant curvatures. For the two possible massive supermultiplets (s,s+1/2) and (s,s-1/2) we derive explicit form of the supertransformations leaving the sum of bosonic and fermionic Lagrangians invariant.
It is shown that Connes' generalized gauge field in non-commutative geometry is derived by simply requiring that Dirac lagrangian be invariant under local transformations of the unitary elements of the algebra, which define the gauge group. The spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetry is guaranteed provided the chiral fermions exist in more than one generations as first observed by Connes-Lott. It is also pointed out that the most general gauge invariant lagrangian in the bosonic sector has two more parameters than in the original Connes-Lott scheme.
We show that the parent Lagrangian method gives a natural generalization of the dual theories concept for non p-form fields. Using this generalization we construct here a three-parameter family of Lagrangians that are dual to the Fierz-Pauli description of a free massive spin-two system. The dual field is a three-index tensor T, which dinamically belongs to the (2,1) representation of the Lorentz group. As expected, the massless limit of our Lagrangian, which is parameter independent, has two propagating degrees of freedom per space point.
Free Lagrangians are found both for gauge and non-gauge bosonic conformal fields of any symmetry type and in any space-time dimension. Conformal gauge fields of various types, their gauge transformations and gauge invariant field strengths (generalized Weyl tensors), which are derived by the $σ_-$ cohomology technics in the frame-like formulation, are shown to correspond to supersymmetric vacua of certain supersymmetric matrix mechanics. The correspondence between conformal and $AdS_d$ higher-spin models, that turn out to have identical generalized Weyl tensors, is discussed.
We continue the investigation of supersymmetric extensions of field theories with a non-standard kinetic term (K field theories) resumed recently. Concretely, for K field theories which allow for kink or compacton solutions in 1+1 dimensions, i.e., for domain walls in a higher-dimensional context, we find a simple supersymmetric extension such that the boson field still has the kink solution, and the field equation for the fermion in the kink background is linear and is solved by the first spatial derivative of the kink, as is the case in the corresponding standard supersymmetric theories. Thi…
This paper is a sequel of arXiv:0810.4350 [hep-th], and is also devoted to the local "metric-like" unconstrained Lagrangians and field equations for higher-spin fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. Here we complete the previous constrained on-shell formulation of Labastida for Fermi fields, deriving the corresponding constrained Lagrangians both via the Bianchi identities and via the requirement of self-adjointness. We also describe two types of unconstrained Lagrangian formulations: a "minimal" one, containing higher derivatives of the compensator fields, and another non-minimal one, conta…
The frame-like covariant Lagrangian formulation of bosonic and fermionic mixed-symmetry type higher spin massless fields propagating on the AdS(d) background is proposed. Higher spin fields are described in terms of gauge p-forms which carry tangent indices representing certain traceless tensor or gamma transversal spinor-tensor representations of the AdS(d) algebra o(d-1,2) (or o(d,1) for bosonic fields in dS(d)). Manifestly gauge invariant Abelian higher spin field strengths are introduced for the general case. We describe the general framework and demonstrate how it works for the mixed-symm…
In this paper we work in perturbative quantum gravity and we introduce a new effective model for gravity. Expanding the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian in graviton field powers we have an infinite number of terms. In this paper we study the possibility of an interpretation of more than three graviton interacting vertices as effective vertices of a most fundamental theory that contain tensor fields. Here we introduce a Lagrangian model named I.T.B (Intermediate Tensor Boson) where four gravitational "pseudo-currents" that contain two gravitons couple to three massive tensorial fields of rank 1, 3, …

Consistent couplings between a massless tensor field with the mixed symmetry of the Riemann tensor and a massless vector field are analyzed in the framework of Lagrangian BRST cohomology. Under the assumptions on smoothness, locality, Lorentz covariance, and Poincare invariance of the deformations, combined with the requirement that the interacting Lagrangian is at most second-order derivative, it is proved that there are no consistent cross-interactions between a single massless tensor field with the mixed symmetry of the Riemann tensor and one massless vector field.
Free AdS(5) mixed-symmetry massless bosonic and fermionic gauge fields of arbitrary spins are described by using su(2,2) spinor language. Manifestly covariant action functionals are constructed and field equations are derived.
We compute analytically the two-loop contribution to the correlation function of the Lagrangian with a four-sided light-like (or null) Wilson loop in N=4 super Yang-Mills. As a non-trivial test of our result, we reproduce the three-loop value of the cusp anomalous dimension upon integration over the insertion point of the Lagrangian. The method we used involved calculating a dual scattering amplitude. Moreover, we give a simple representation of the loop integrand of the latter in twistor variables.
The problem on mapping between two Lagrangian descriptions (using a commuting $c$-number spinor $ψ_α$ or anticommuting pseudovector $ξ_μ$ and pseudoscalar $ξ_5$ variables) of the spin degrees of freedom of a color spinning massive particle interacting with background non-Abelian gauge field, is considered. A general analysis of the mapping between a pair of {\it Majorana} spinors $(ψ_α,θ_α)$ ($θ_α$ is some auxiliary anticommuting spinor) and a real anticommuting tensor aggregate $(S,V_μ,\!\,^{\ast}T_{μν},A_μ,P)$, is presented. A complete system of bilinear relations between the tensor quantiti…
